Martin Kutches arrived on time to estimate the job of pruning two trees. After approving his bid, he and his crew arrived 15 minutes early and started working. After two hours of pruning and clean up. They were done. The hauled everything away. I asked,"When should I call you back? In two years?" He answered, "Call me in three. Martin Kutches and his crew have been taking care of our trees for 13 years. Our narrow lot had 6 big tall trees in back, plus a sycamore on the street when we acquired the property. They removed 3 of the back trees and have kept the others trimmed. When the sycamore had a problem, Martin knew what to do and saved it. They are always neat and very reasonable. Most knowable about the best treatment of trees in our crowded neighborhoods. Their advice has saved us time and money! We have never been disappointed by this fine crew! read more

So, Martin and son having helped me out on an emergency basis back in July, and my huge Norfolk Pine (Auracana) needing further thinning / trimming / de-limbing, I got a couple of estimates, and went with Martin. He and his very competent workmen arrived at the agreed-upon time and got to work. The work went well, and I must say it was interesting, if a bit heart-stopping, to watch Martin climb, chain-saw off those huge limbs, and winch them groundward where the other men took care of them. There was no damage to my property, and it was left in as clean a condition as possible. They were all as careful as they could be. Another fine job turned in. This is a hard-working and competent crew, and nor do they overcharge for what they do. It is still lovely to be able to honestly support small family businesses. read more

I live in San Francisco and went out to move my car for street cleaning. After the cleaning truck went by, I was pulling out to park in front of my building when a man put a cone right in front of my car. In front of my driveway. He was from Kutches Tree Company, there to trim my neighbors tree. I was unable to go forward due to the cone and my other neighbor was behind me in her car, the tree company behind her in their truck, so I had no where to go, we were all at a stand still. I tried to explain that I needed him to move the cone so I could move forward in order for everyone to move back. He walked over to my window, got in my face and started to yell at me. It was super aggressive and scary. One of my neighbors who was outside was ready to call the police. When he was done yelling at me and telling me what he would do to my car, he walked off and the neighbor getting his tree trimmed moved the cone so that we could all pull into parking spots, none of which were near where the tree trimming was happening. I called Kutches to let them know what had happened and the woman on the phone said that her worker said people were trying to park where he was going to trim trees. Hmmm? Cones across my driveway? We didn't give anyone permission to block our driveway and we did not hire anyone to trim our tree. It also does not give him the right to yell at me the way that he did. It was terrifying and unnecessary. We were trying to work with him but he was causing a scene and making it difficult. I am so upset by what happened and was afraid to go outside all morning until they left because I dreaded another confrontation by this man. What is worse is that I have to deal with the emotional aftermath of the confrontation and this guy will more than likely not be held accountable for his actions. Also, not a peep from the company. They took my number and said someone would call me back, but nothing. I feel sorry for anyone who comes in contact with this guy, he was really scary. read more

Martin has done work at my home A few times. This review isnt for his work, but his attitude and cost. He is rude and flippant- even to a customer! He says he doesn't check his emails or phone. But it shows he does! He says he's coming, then changes his mind. He is very unpleasant to deal with. Avoid Kutches! There are many more options. I just had Martin come by to talk to me about my two trees, and I wanted to share what a polite and informed guy he was. He was very positively recommended by another arborist. Martin spent about a half hour with me, examining my trees and diagnosing some overlapping pest, placement and irrigation problems, and gave me a lot of great information for my landscaping as well as my tree. He really knew what he was talking about. Ultimately he recommended that I wait to see how the trees do, as opposed to do any intervention now, as we've made some construction changes lately in our site. Martin is definitely who I will call when my tree needs maintenance. I noticed the negative review below, which really does not square with the very polite and thoughtful gentleman who came by my place ....he gave me so much helpful information and advice, as well as zero pushy sales pitch. Hopefully folks will put more weight on the positive reviews of his actual customers, rather than a non-customer who was annoyed to find tree-pruning activity blocking her parking spot... read more

I called about woodchip delivery- this is generally a free service and Martin said he'd be able to deliver. The deal is, I have to be home to take delivery, and since it's free I need to be flexible with timing. I called the day before to confirm, and was told he'd come midday, but that it's hard to predict how long a job will take. I called at 1:30 to check on how things were going, and he said another 3-4 hours. So now it's the evening, I've rented a wheelbarrow, organized a babysitter so I can move the chips, and spent my day waiting for this guy, and have heard nothing. I understand that I'm asking for something for free and that there are many reasons the chip delivery could not work out, but human decency dictates that he at least call back to say he won't be bringing the chips. Said that he was going to do a long list of items for a significant amount of money. When he was called in to do them it seems that he picked and chose what he would do well. He left half undone. When we called back to ask him about it he just gave advice about how we could do it. He did prune some bushes nicely. If you work with him be very clear about your expectations, and don't pay him for anything a gardener can do- he will not do a thorough job. read more

Working with Martin and Martin Jr. was an incredible experience. First, we made an appointment to look at my job. They were going to be a little late and they actually called to let me know. They came in and gave me a bid to remove 15 stumps from the back of my home in SF. It wasn't an easy job because they had to dig out all of the stumps by hand. These were stumps from trees that were 20 to 25 feet tall. Not an easy job. I liked the two of them immediately and I accepted their bid. We set up an appointment for the removal. They showed up on time! The job was suppose to take a day but because the trees had been buried under about 2 feet of dirt (they didn't realize this until they started the removal),so it took almost two full days. They didn't complain and they didn't ask for more money. We scheduled the second day for a week later and once again they came in on time. The job was finished and my place was left in perfect condition. I couldn't believe how hard these guys worked. On top of that, they were genuinely nice guys. Also, very trustworthy. I've never taken time to write a review on anyone...even bad experiences. This one was so positive, I had to share my experience with others. read more
