BACON CHEESEBURGER MEATLOAF! Beef and pork meatloaf with bacon, cheese and onion straws on top. It was VERY good and the onion straws balanced out the flavors perfectly. My younger sister goes to Kutztown so we make a trip there every once in a while and always make a stop at the Tavern. It's clean, friendly and very rustic/homey. Most of the brewery area is on display as you walk in, which is pretty cool. So we always start out with the same thing...The Golden Avalanche Sampler. It's basically a huge, fried plate of goodness and the main reason we get this--the corn fritters!!! I cannot express how addicting these little bites are. Its like cornbread on crack with a side of honey hah. This last visit I ordered the cowboy burger which was so juicy, covered in chedder, onions and some yummy bbq sauce. It was so big I didn't even get through half of it. It came with a side of crispy potato wedges. My mouth is waterering just thinking of it... The others in my group got a turkey club panini and a veggie panini which were also really delish. Definitely check this place out if you are ever in the area. We've had nothing but positive experiences at the Kutztown Tavern. The food is a bit on the high end of the budget, but it's always tasty and the drink selection is solid. We recently hosted a meeting for the Fresh Air Fund (www.freshair.org) and they allowed us to use the Club Room. It was a beautiful brick room with its own bar and bathroom. It comfortably seated 25 of us, although it can hold up to 32. Very quiet with the door closed and they have a high-tech overhead projection system that you can connect with your laptop for presentations. It was a perfect setting for our annual meeting. Our server, Beth, did a phenomenal job keeping up with our drinks, food orders and was just a real pleasure to have around through our meeting. The food came out incredibly fast and was tasty as always. She even ended our night with each table getting a cupful of mints- a cute touch! We will definitely continue to support the Kutztown Tavern in any way we can! read more

All in all, I have to say I like this place. I've been here a few times over the last few years and everything is very consistent. While their food skews towards the expensive side, keep in mind that almost all their offerings have hearty portions and are for the most part worth the money. I personally have never had a bad meal here; perhaps not an amazing meal, but all were good meals. In terms of their beer I will admit that there are better offerings out there, but most of their brews are worth a shot. Recently I had the Dunkel Dutch, which according to their menu is entirely made from Pennsylvania grown ingredients. I can certainly get behind locally sourced beers if they choose to make more of them. The beer itself was a little rougher on the palate than a dunkel typically is, but the taste was on par with expectations. A glass will run you five dollars, so it's not outrageous for craft beer either. This is probably your best sit-down dining venue in Kutztown in terms of value, ambiance and diversity in food and drink. It might not always 'wow' you, but it will always leave you satisfied. read more

July 5, 2021 , multiple tables open, not busy at all but yet we are standing at the front waiting to be seated. Girl at the front desk says 5 mins. Longest 5 mins that turned to 15 mins. We decided to go sit at the bar, where the front desk girl said I was about to sit you. We proceeded to the bar where we were past by multiple staff members for 10 mins without any acknowledgment. Right when we were ready to walk out, bartender started to give us attention. It's sucks because I always loved coming here. The food and beer was good though. They look understaffed. This was my first time at this restaurant and if I'm in town, I'm not sure I'd go back. Walked into the building from Main St. and was greeted by a sign that indicated if you wanted a table you had to walk to the "end" of the bar. We stood there for 5 mins until someone approached us. The hostess indicated there was a 15 min wait but I counted 11 empty tables. The "15 min" wait turned into 30 mins as they slowly sat people. Felt like we were in the waitstaff's way and the bar pick up area is also at the "end" of the bar. People also come in the back and there is a waiting area at the very end of the building (wish we had known, we would have moved to area to be out of the way of the waitstaff). Hostesses seemed very confused and disorganized causing frustration by customers and waitstaff. The place is cool and spacious. Food is good as well. Our waiter was very courteous and friendly. If your patience allow you to look past the hostess station dysfunction, this place is worth a try. read more

Best beer in town along with some fine tavern faire..Things I recommend include the soft pretzel app and the Donner Weiss beer, which is a European Wheat beer brewed right in Kutztown, PA. Depending upon the seating, it can be pretty noisy if you have a family of 5 or greater. Great variety, Ive never had one of their beers I didn't like, and I've tried them all. I especially love the Spring Bock, very refreshing, along with any of their wheat beers. Everything else? Meh. The food is mediocre other than the burgers. Many menu items are premade, for example, the turkey burgers are not made in house. Price to sub fries instead of chips with your meal is something like $3.25, outrageous. The mixed drinks at the bar are of below average quality, for average price. Bartenders are mostly friendly, if not inexperienced. Come for the beer! If you get food, get a beef burger/wings, those are good. read more

Fried pickles were great and server was awesome. However, I asked for my burger rare. The first one looked over cooked and I asked the server what she thought and she said "well done". I asked if they could make me another and the server was super nice about it. The second burger (pictured) also looked over cooked to me and I said I would eat it still but when I asked what he thought he said it "had red hues" and argued that it was rare. It's fine if you mess up, just admit it and learn from it. But the fact that they think it is rare will make me not order a burger or steak from there. read more

Needed to find a place for lunch in Kutztown. With no information about it we picked this cute restaurant (When given a choice, I'll always pick a 'Tavern'.) We were pleasantly surprised, it's a great place with a wonderful atmosphere. I made the mistake of ordering another local lager but they only serve their own brewed beers. I'm not one to try lots of different beers so I just ordered an iced tea. But the server came back with a small glass of what he felt I'd like based on the lager I first ordered. I've wanted to head out to the Kutztown Tavern for quite a while after hearing some positive things about it from friends. So we took a little field trip over to Kutztown and entered a very brightly lit, spacious bar. There's a convenient little 6 pack shop under the same namesake attached to the left as you enter that has quite a selection of beers as well as a take out menu. The bar was practically empty, but given the time of year (June), the local college kids were probably all gone for the summer, but I hear it can get very busy during the school year. Their beer, brewed by the Golden Avalanche Brewing Company, is solid for the most part. I didn't care much for their Donner Weiss and the brick alt was a bit too floral for my taste buds. However, both their onyx cream and bourbon stouts were quite good. The Young Allen lager was also palate pleasing and well balanced. The food was a bit meh in general. It is typical pub grub but with a much larger variety. There also seems to be a pretzel theme going on interestingly enough. The wings were standard but the seafood alt bisque was surprisingly tasty. Meal portions are alarmingly large and not in the good way. My friend's cowboy burger was passable and came with a monstrous serving of fries. My bacon cheeseburger meatloaf was massive but sadly devoid of any flavor. Service was friendly and efficient but there were only a handful of patrons at the bar overall. Prices are very reasonable. The Tavern is not a bad place to check out if you ever find yourself in this remote area. read more

One of the best restaurants in Kutztown, which isn't saying TOO much, since it's in the middle of nowhere - seriously. As other yelp-ers have mentioned, it's worth a visit just for their big,soft appetizer pretzels with spicy deli mustard & cheese. Pretty much anything made from the pretzel dough on the menu is great, specifically the buffalo chicken pizza. The decor is nice, lots of wood and exposed copper brewing tanks in the main dining room enclosed in glass make for a cool atmosphere. I'm giving the Kutztown Tavern the benefit of the doubt with 4 starts, because I love the place and still stop in every time I'm in Kutztown. The soft pretzels make the place. Try the turkey melt. I took off a star because they stopped serving bread and butter with their meals. If you remember the bread and butter, you know why it's worth a whole star: different flavors every time. I'm tempted to take off another star to punish the place for their micro brew, the unfortunately named Golden Avalanche Brewery. Their beers range the spectrum and they always have a seasonal for you to try. As micro brews go, these beers are just not that good. They get to keep a star for the Bourbon Stout, though, which is one of the best beers I've ever tasted in my life. Drinking the Bourbon Stout is like drinking a Hershey Bar that will get your drunk! I own a mug at the bar, it has my name on it, and it gets me extra beer at the same price! So that's a plus. The food, well its upscale pub food, but nothing to speak of. I would give it a higher rating if it wasn't so damn BRIGHT in there. A tavern should be dim lit, its like TGIF bright. Bizarrely enough the buffalo Chicken Egg rolls are really really really good, although will no doubt take years off your life. the Micro Brews are better than most. Im a regular so the staff is friendly to me, but they are not nice to all. We have been eating here for years and it has taken awhile to figure out when to go and what to order. If you don't mind a different server due to them changing with each semester it seems go. The service is suitable and the best thing is the microbrews crafted on site. As for the food the soft pretzel is good and most of the salads are well done. Skip the chili. Now if you want to eat the best thing on the entire Menu hands down its the pork shank! It's a pretty large portion and therefore worth the stupid plate share charge. My daughter and I always split one for a total of $24! It's defiantly a special treat but it is always done very well! The Blueberry beer is great when in season. If you aren't sure on brews try the sample flight. It is always super loud as there are few soft surfaces. The hostess stand is in the back by the way and they rarely seen to enjoy their job. I came back not once but twice since my original review. The food is great!! I had the Tucson Salad and chicken tortilla soup. The salad was super fresh and the balsamic dressing wasn't overly salty. The soup thankfully wasn't burn your mouth spicy. It was just the right amount of spice. It was on a bit salty side (didn't need the saltines provided). Last night we ate dinner and had a few beers. The service was just fine and not great or poor. The restaurant is roomier than it looks and nicer than you'd think for a college town. We started off with the beer battered mozzarella sticks and those were pretty awesome. They came with homemade marinara which was good, but I like a sweeter marinara. The most important part... The beer! He ordered the sampler. I ordered the seasonal pumpkin beer, then the seasonal Octoberfest. I enjoyed both beers, but neither stood out to me. Both we smooth and better light. His flight came with every beer (non-seasonal) and he got to pick two seasonal. He had the Octoberfest and I believe the other seasonal was the bourbon stout. He enjoyed every beer, but like me, nothing was epic! His favorite was the Weiss beer seabed with a lemon. We both ordered burgers and neither of us were disappointed. He got the "Burner" which is a spicy burger and he was surprised that it was actually spicy!!! I got the "unburger" which is their veggie burger. It was decent since the veggies burgers at most place are awful!! The was a Morningstar burger which is disappointing, but I'd rather have a Morningstar burger than a really mushy burger I suppose?!? Also, it was served on a pretzel roll which was great, but it didn't hold together. I would have preferred the regular burger roll. I did LOVE the caramelized onions and provolone that was served on it though! We also enjoyed the shoestring fries! Lastly, the most disappointing part of the evening was dessert. He ordered the deep fried brownie sundae. It was to be deep fried brownies covered in whipped cream, chocolate sauce, Oreos, and chopped peanuts. It came and it looked like it needed an island of it's own! Huge! We both took a bite only to be dissatisfied! These brownies where not deep fried and also not that great. I am the ultimate brownie fan and these did not live up to my standards. The brownie had nice flavor but was not oooey gooey like a brownie should be...kinda dry. Also, this dessert was 75% whipped cream!!! And had a price tag of about $10....so we had to ask about why they weren't deep fried. The response is that they don't do that anymore because they used to buy their brownies and now they make them theirselves. My response: 1) change your menu, but the dessert will still suck! 2) deep fry your brownie and perhaps that will help it not suck! 3) buy and bake boxed brownies and deep fry them Any if this is better than what you have! The other food was good, so it's a shame! Also cut back on whipped cream. And charging that much for an unfried brownie is crazy!! The only other thing that stinks is parking. One of the better restaurants in Kutztown, it's worth a visit just for those big soft pretzels and lovely mustard & cheese appetizer. Their salads, pizzas and burgers are pretty good as well. They do make their own specialty brew's and pretzel rolls for the burgers. The decor is nice, relatively modern with big copper brewing tanks in the main dining room enclosed in glass. I have had a few bad experiences here (not enough to keep me away) and I remember when the pretzels came with cheese (instead of the cheese being extra) and the days when dinner came with some sort of varietal bread every day (carrot muffins/whole grain/sourdough) and a variety of butter as well.
