I've been here before for lunch and the food was always good. However, tonight their service may have turned me off from ever going again. The place has in big white letters on their window "All you can eat sushi" and I've been there for such a few times. Figured on a random Wednesday night it'd be fun to go grab such. So myself and four others got there, the place was nearly empty (only one other table seated), we sat down. Waitress hands us the non-AYCE menus, which were used to them doing on previous visits and we just will tell them we're doing AYCE when they ask what we want. She takes our drink orders, comes back with the drinks, and then asks us what we want to order. This is where things take a turn. She tells us they won't do AYCE because their sushi bar is short staffed. It's an empty restaurant. We ask if we can order sushi in general, and that's apparently okay for us to pay full à la carte pricing for the same short staffed sushi bar. We'd already been served drinks... we had to pay $17 for 5 fountain drinks to be told they didn't have what we came for. We ended up leaving and going to a different restaurant. This all could've been solved if they'd just put a sign on the door, or told us when seating us that they weren't doing all you can eat for the night. It was especially annoying that I raved to 3 of the 4 others in our party how good the food was and they drove the longest distances to be there just for this to happen and we ended up driving to the other restaurant back closer to where they all live. The food may have been good on previous visits but the service tonight was not customer friendly at all and I finally understand why despite how good their food is the place has been nearly empty every time I've gone there. read more

Went here with some friends for lunch. The place was completely empty at lunch time and we were there from 12-2! We were looking for a new place to go to all you can eat sushi but this place is just not it. Every order of sushi after the first order had more and more rice and at the end the lady charged my friend $10 extra for leaving some rice of off 3 pieces of sushi! Let's be 100 on this. I am from California so I eat sushi all the time and it's great there. However, I also have eaten at Tasty Sushi in Cary, Sagano in Barrington and Kyoto in CL, they are good and have some up there qualities. I have to give this place 4 for cuteness, and that's where it drops off. It's not very clean. I am at the sushi bar and one of the cooler for sushi looks dusty and has a Avacados in it. The sushi quality is really subpar. The spicy tuna and salmon are really processed and not full of flavor and if you know you know, the wasabi is the fake stuff that isn't hot...like I can eat the whole little ball. This was a huge sign. The white tuna tasted off and was rather warm. The sushi rolls just were not fresh and clean. The jalepeno himachi was good but not exceptional. They doused it with ponzi and another sauce...don't know why... They were attentive service wise, but then again it was 1 pm and nobody was in here. This is a tough review because I really try to find the positive and highlight the good as much as I can, however on this trip to Kawa Sushi, which was our first experience, turned out to be really rough. I should mention that even with all the issues we encountered, I write that off to poor process and management and don't hold the only waitress working accountable and still left her a 18-20% tip. The ambiance when we walked in was a quiet family restaurant. The restaurant was empty except for one other table of 2. There were a few walk in picking up to go orders during our 1 and half hour dining experience. The restaurant was clean and tables, booths, chairs looked in good condition which is great to see. Honestly the food was ok, not special but certainly not bad. However there are so many similar restaurants competing for the same customers, it all comes down to service along with the food. So, the issues we encountered: They are severely understaffed. Most of the time we dined, us 4 patrons of the restaurant were the only ones in the front of house. I would count 5 mins where no employees were in front many times while we were there. I'm on the side of small business and the difficult times everyone faces with work shortages etc, but you really can't run a restaurant with no one up front. There was a sushi chef up front who actually seated us, which he was also in the back most of our time dining. Our waitress was helpful when she was available. I don't fault her for being gone from the front, I don't know what kept her busy and away from the dining area front of house, so I won't speculate. I'm sure she was trying her best and had no control of the situation. The next issue was the main problem, I ordered a combo hibachi with chicken and steak. Gave the meat temp for steak and also mentioned I'm allergic to shrimp, so I know the waitress wrote the order down correctly. My dish arrived with chicken and shrimp, I mentioned that I was allergic to shrimp and had ordered steak in the combo. With only 4 people dining in, I'm not sure how the kitchen got this order wrong, but again I'll give leeway to the kitchen. However after hearing the other table of two ask what was taking so long to get their order, and waiting at least 10 minutes to get my replacement meal, I was given a dish with cold chicken, like it had been sitting too long while they cooked the steak? At this point I was over this experience, but had to wait another 5-10 minutes for someone to come back to the front of the restaurant to ask for a box to take my food home. I wish I could say we'd give Kawa Sushi another chance, like we do with most restaurants. Restaurants have off days too, but with so much competition in the area, we might just stick to ones we know. read more

Ordered a Tuna lover, the Tuna sashimi was frozen solid an hour after ordering in the middle still, had the Kuwa roll as well and jalapeño poppers. The poppers were excellent but something was not right with the fish. Both me and my wife have been stuck in the bathroom for the last hour. Neither of us were together today and was 100% bad fish from here. Maybe there other food is good but stay away, we order sushi regularly from other restaurants and will never be back here, for one roll an app and tuna plate it was $85, I expected more, not frozen spoiled fish and diarrhea!! read more

First time dining here since the ownership changed and I'll definitely be back. Restaurant is spacious, comfortable and clean. We came Friday for lunch and tried their lunch specials which come with soup. I tried the Orange Shrimp (pictured), Sushi Platter and Beef with Mixed Vegetables. Both the sushi and Chinese dishes were fresh and flavorful. I ordered the hot & sour soup with my platter which is one way I gauge the authenticity & quality of a Chinese restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. The soup and dishes we ordered reminded me of my parent's restaurant which they ran for over 30 years. There are very few restaurants serving quality Chinese dishes in the Northwest suburbs so come out and support this restaurant. read more
