The Breaking Bread location in Cary has delivered consistent service and incredibly tasty food in all the years I've been going. While I have my menu favorites, I regularly try new items (the menu is surprisingly large), and I've honestly never been disappointed. The homemade chips and dill dip just can't be beat. (That is a menu item I always order!) We recently had them cater some baked potatoes for my company's work party. (We provided our own toppings, but needed someone local to provide the baked potatoes.) Teri was super easy to work with and quick in responding to my email questions. Well, this may be the end of our office relationship with Breaking Bread. We order at least once a week during our busy season and have been ordering for several seasons. We had to call and let them know the order was not up to their usual standards today. That call was only our second complaint ever. The manager took the phone and came on swingin", accusing my office manager of "nit-picking" and setting us straight that she prepared the food and it was just fine. Unbelievable. We have not been disappointed here. The food is good and the staff is very friendly. We had the two hot dog special. One everything no peppers and one everything with peppers. The hot dogs are really good and the ingredients are fresh. The fries are made thin and crispy, pretty good too. My wife loves the home chips with dill sauce! A very good sandwich shop, small inside with limited seating. They make some creative twists on sandwiches, as well as most standard fare. My favorite item on the menu is the home chips with dill sauce. Get them every time I order from here. I can personally vouch for the turkey blt, the tuna salad sandwich, the chicken Parm, the Italian, and the Hometown Roast Beef w/ horseradish sauce. All of these are great, and I've ordered each several times . My wife's fave is the loaded grilled cheese. I've tried the chili, the fried chicken (deli sliced, a unique take) and bacon, the Cuban, the Reuben, and their burgers. All items good, but not as much my personal taste as the first list. Ambiance It is kind of hard to comment on the ambience since I have only had takeout and have not got the experience of sitting and dining in. It seems pretty cozy though. The lighting is good. Service I thought it was good. It is hard to comment since I ordered through the phone but everyone seems to be happy there and they also are friendly. Food I like the food. I ordered 2x now. The first time, I got the tuna melt sandwich. The sandwich had a nice flavor and I enjoyed that it wasn't overpowered by any one of the primary flavors that usually happens (I.e. strong tuna flavor, strong celery flavor, strong mayo flavor) on other tuna salad sandwiches I have. The balance was a pleasant surprise. I also had their fried Mac n cheese bites on my 1st order. I enjoyed them to the point of when I took my picture I had eaten most of them. Coating was crispy and had a creamy filing. I think it came with a dipping sauce but they really did not make it to my house. My second time I went there, I got the Buffalo chicken sandwich. I did enjoy the sandwich, but not as much as the tuna melt... The roll it was served on was really good. Had a nice crispness to it. The sauce was okay, it just tasted like hot sauce. I think if the chicken was fried, it might have contributed a crunchiness. But I they did not go with a crispy because the sauce could have made the chicken soggy. I ordered a side of home made chips. It look like it came with some dipping sauce. It was okay but the chips were definitely the star of the meal. They were properly seasoned and had a nice crisp to them. Price The price is a little steep for a sandwich. Overall I would definitely order from breaking bread. First off, I have never been so quick to jump on here and leave this review. I just swung by on my lunch and ordered a Cuban and the cheese curds to go. The two gentlemen working were super nice and polite. The place was very clean and welcoming. I quickly got my food and went back to the office to eat. This is where I was absolutely blown away. The Cuban was incredible. Cooked perfectly and delicious. And the cheese curds?? Best I've ever had in my life. Easily. And I'm a dude who has grown up in the Midwest and have had thousands and thousands of cheese curds in my time, these are top notch. Extremely flavorful and incredible. New to the area and finally able to have family and friends over to celebrate our daughters graduation. I decided to try Breaking Bread. From my call when I ordered, everything was outstanding. They were very helpful with explaining their menu. At pick-up, all my food was wrapped, ready and they carried it all out to my car. The food was delicious. The sandwiches were all so fresh. The Rueben's were incredible, on little rye rolls. My guests went crazy for the strawberry, feta salad! You have got to order this salad! And the potato salad was the best I have ever eaten! My first thoughts: Wow where have I been for the last 6 years? How did I miss this place? Tried out the Cary location and I guess they have one in Crystal Lake for the last year too! Anyways! Yum! Guys they don't make them like this anymore. The reason we stopped in is because this weekend the owner bragged that she could make almost any sandwich gluten free and that they have the "best gluten free bread"! Well she didn't disappoint! She most certainly can say this! It was awesome! And if you unfortunately have to eat gluten free you know how bad most gluten free bread is. I intended to take a photo of lunch but it looked so good and i was starting and I ate it before I realized I hadn't (sorry guys). We had the grilled chicken bacon ranch sandwich GF with shoe string fries, pesto grilled chicken sandwich, original grilled cheese and mac n cheese bites! Very tasty no complaints! Kids finished off their meal with ice cream sandwich which I did snap a photos of! Prices were reasonable for freshly prepared made to order lunch which came out quickly. This place is great for something a little different. They have sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, etc which sounds really simple, but there's more to the menu. I got the chief dog here a couple of times which is one of my favorites and includes pulled pork, pepper jack cheese on a pretzel bun. Also had the grilled cheese burger with avocado, bacon and jalapeno's as well as the giant 12" french roll hot dog with chicken, bacon and cheese on top. I had to mention all of those because they were all delicious! It's not any place you can get served something like that. Also the mac and cheese bites or pretzel cheese curds are great for an appetizer. Make sure you come here with an appetite though. I really wanted to love this place. Sadly it didn't happen. Stopped for lunch after reading other reviews and I ordered the Rueben sandwich with fries extra crispy to dine in. A disinterested young woman took my order and gave me a number saying: "we'll bring it out when it's ready". That was it; the extent of her conversation. No "good afternoon, what can we get for you today", nor a "thanks for stopping in, we appreciate your business". The clerk's indifference might have been overlooked if the food were stellar - it was not. After a twenty minute wait a "to go" bag was plopped down on my table and my number was collected. I reminded the deliverer that my order was for "dine in" and she said "Oh", as she disappear behind the counter. Upon opening my styrofoam serving container I discovered fries that were hot but not extra crispy as ordered. My Reuben on marble rye left me disappointed as well. Bread makes the sandwich and this bread was not fresh. A Reuben should be golden brown and toasty, this one was dry and pale. The crust was inedible. Zero stars for the service, one star for the sandwich, and three stars for the fries since they were nice and hot. Add it all up and you get two stars and no repeat business from me. read more

We just moved to town and we've head a lot about this spot. We chose to grab some lunch! We were greeted when we walked through the door by what seemed to be the owner. He was so kind and conversational. I ordered what I normally would at any other deli, a Ruben, and my husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich. Everything was delicious! Horrible burger and disappointing Ruben. This used to be a great mom and pop sandwich shop. I have been here many times for the Ruben sandwich. They said the burger was great but that the Ruben was better. I love a good burger and I was hungry. So I ordered both. The burger was a microwaved Bubs burger or similar to a Bubs. It was gross! Now the Ruben. They must have changed to a pre sliced, lower grade of meat or both. It has lost its fresh flavor. It now has that texture of packaged meat that you buy next to the deli case. One of my coworkers was given a delivery menu a few weeks back, and I was drooling over how delicious the pretzel covered cheese curds looked. So, instead of preparing a lunch on a Friday, we decided to give this place a try. An added bonus is that they deliver for free. I'm used to paying for delivery fees as it is technically a convenience to get your food that way, but this was a pleasant surprise. Based on some previous Yelp reviews, I decided to give the Italian Grilled Cheese sandwich a try. It's a mozzarella cheese that's used with some Italian seasoning put between two hearty slices of Italian bread. I can tell that they care about the quality of the sandwich as they used real butter to grill the sandwich. My only drawbacks were that I felt that my side of cheese curds was kind of small for the prices and that the bread was slightly stale. I noticed a new deli in Cary a couple of weeks ago and have been meaning to stop in ever since. I am so glad I finally did. When we walked in every seat was filled. That was our first indication that this place must be good. The staff is super friendly and helpful and will help you order if you don't know what to get. My fiance and I ordered the works. We each had a sandwich, chips, drink and soup. I had the Turkey Club (amazing) and he had the Chicken Wing sandwich (looked incredible). I work in the area and the strip mall BB is in and the fast food restaurants that are in front of it are usually my main area to grab lunch so I was happy to see a new place open up. Service: The service was good and the staff was friendly. Environment: Cute little sandwich shop. Nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable. Food: Here is where I had a problem. So far I have only tried 2 things on 2 separate occasions so to be fair their other sandwiches could be much better and I picked the 2 that they are not too great at making. First Time I went here I tried the Corned Beef sandwich and was rather disappointed. The quality of the meat and bread was good but there was far more bread than meat, and that is not how it should be with a Corned beef. They use very thick cut marble rye and then put the tiniest portion of corned beef between them. Not worth the money I paid for the sandwich. Second time I got the Italian Beef with Mozzarella and it was decent, and this time the amount of meat in the sandwich was a fair amount. However I have to say considering Portillo's is only a 5 minute drive up the road they have some hefty competition when I want an Italian Beef. read more

I really hate to rate this so low, but I am basing it off of my experience today. I would only recommend going here if you have an hour+ to eat or 45 minutes or more to wait for your food. I came here for lunch today and it took my grilled cheese 45 minutes to get made, then I didn't even have time to eat it because I had to take my friend back to school. Honestly took longer than at a nice sit down restaurant when I order steak. Very disappointing experience. I will not be back unless I have a few hours to waste waiting on food I could make myself in 10 minutes. As for the quality, it was alright. Once I got the sandwich home and ate it, (because I had to drop friend off at school, so I got it to go) it was cold. I did get a hot sandwich. Taste was pretty good, if only it had been hot like it was supposed to be. As for price, I would say it is a little over priced for the amount of food you get. I purchased a Planitsave voucher, "Spend $10 and receive a voucher worth $20. We ordered: 2 Italian Sub Sandwiches 1 Classic Cheeseburger and 1 Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich (I asked if it could be grilled and they let me know that they don't have any grilled chicken. I guess that should have been a clue right there that they don't use fresh ingredients in anything that they make.) I placed my order at 6:30 on a Thursday night (not knowing that they closed at 7:00) My total was $25 and I was to pick it up in 25 minutes. I arrived on time and picked up my food. (I used my $20 voucher that I paid $10 for and then I paid the remaining $5 and change of my bill with cash.) Review: On the italian subs, the giardinara was extremely hot. Even after removing it, there was no way my kids could eat it because the juice from the giardinara was all over the sandwich. Then, I noticed that the meat in the sandwich had started to go bad! The slices of salami had pink centers with GREY surrounding the edges! There was no way I would eat it and I definitely would never feed it to my kids. Even if the giardinara had been mild or the meat had been fresh, there's still no way in hell that I would ever call it an "Italian Submarine". It was not even close. They seemed to have used grocery store soft rolls. Reminiscent of a 6pk of "Pepperidge Farm Sub Rolls" or the equivalent. How are you going to name your restaurant "Breaking Bread" and not offer amazing bread? Moving on. The Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich was a gross shade of yellow and was cold. The burger was cold also. I'm not sure how it could have cooled off that much in the less than 5 minute drive to my house. Perhaps they didn't want to make a fresh patty when closing time was so near and so we got one that may have been sitting in a warmer for hours? Who knows. We didn't eat any of our food. I called right away and one of the young teenage boys answered the phone. I asked to speak to a manager to which he replied that he WAS a manager. I explained to him the problems with our order. Starting with the giardinara on the subs. I didn't understand why it wouldn't state that the giardinara was spicy v.s mild on the menu. He replied that he didn't know that there were two different types. I moved on to my issue with the meat on the subs being grey. His answer for was that, "It was probably just the blood settling." What?? I also told him about the cold food. After rejecting his counter offer of restaurant credit, he agreed to refund my money and took down my info. The day I came to collect my refund, the woman at the register was extremely rude to me. I explained to her that I had used a Planit Save voucher worth $20 to pay for my $25 tab. She looked at me and said, "Yeah, but you aren't getting a refund for he entire meal, it says here that you complained about the sub sandwich". I explained to her that no, it was the whole order that was unacceptable. I explained the issue with the giardinara on the subs. She said, "That's not our fault, that's how you ordered them!" I explained to her that it usually states on a menu if an item is spicy .... She scoffed at me. I then said, "I wouldn't have served them to my kids anyways because the meat on the sandwiches was bad." She rolled her eyes as though I was lying. I told her, "The meat on your sub sandwiches was GREY. Not fresh. There's NO doubt about it, I have pictures." I reached for my phone to unveil the evidence and stated "You know, this is completely ridiculous and I cannot believe that this is how you choose to do business." With that, she said, "You know what?!..." and angrily opened the register.... "Here's your $15!" It's been a while since I've had to deal with customer service THAT bad. I will never go back. So I ordered from Breaking Bread last night on Uber Eats. They made my order and Uber couldn't find a driver, totally not their fault. I called the restaurant and asked the guy about my order because in the Uber Eats app it doesn't really tell you. The man that answered wasn't very friendly and said yeah your orders here and done, were waiting on a driver. I hung up, I waited about another ten minutes and found someone to get the food for me because it was taking a long time. (I was working or I would have picked it up myself) The same man picked up and stated well we're closed, I have to stay here until a driver shows up or you cancel your order. I felt really bad so I told him I could send my friend to pick it up. The man did ALOT of sighing, and he's like well we're closed. I explained I was 10 minutes down the road and I felt pretty bad he went through the effort to make the food, plus I was starving. He legit sighed again and said, Nah we're closed sorry and hung up on me. Needless to say I was pretty upset, I get it they were closing. However if he had to stay until an Uber driver picked up the fair what's the difference? So much for trying to do the right thing. read more

Discovered this place in early April (2015) when looking for lunch places in Cary. Visited a couple of times, typically ordering a cold roast beef sandwich with desired fixings, etc. Good sandwich at a fair price - better than the chains; it's a local family run place. But what was really great was my most recent experience. I was busy at work and thought it best to order in, so I decided to call BBCD and ask for delivery. I called around 11:30AM, figuring that as long as my meal came before 1PM, I'd be fine with that. So I place my order (which typically includes a pound of potato salad which I spread over a couple of lunches), and am told it will be around 45 minutes... so 12:15 or so - great! Well, about 20 minutes or so later, one of the BBCD people is walking into my office with my order. If Jimmy John's think they have "freaky fast delivery", then this place's delivery is freaky cubed! I have been here twice, I didn't know this place excited until someone told me I must go eat here. The first time I went I got a Reuben sandwich with curly fries. This was one the best Rubens I have ever had outside of my house. There was just the perfect amount of meat and sauerkraut on the sandwich and the bread was the best Ryebread around. Breaking Bread is a locally owned, family owned sandwich shop in Cary. This is a great stop for an afternoon meal that is different from the chain places that surround it. They offer a wide range of sandwiches, burgers, and dogs as well as soups. Their location is not exciting and you can easily drive by without noticing it, however, the interior is welcoming and has a nice vibe. They really need to add a menu board. A first timer would be quite confused and may feel awkward upon entering just because you are not sure what to do as evidenced by the stack of discarded, printed menus on the counter during lunch time. The small printed menus are really the only way to know what to choose from which is odd. The food is worth the confusion. The sandwiches are made fresh to order and the ingredients are EXCELLENT. Fresh cut meats, cheeses and veggies. Awesome Guac! The BREAD is the money maker: fresh, warm, and hearty. I highly suggest getting their "Signature Sandwiches" which are often lightly toasted. The sandwhich is large and will fill you up. Total with chips/drink is around $8-$10 so it is in the Jimmy Johns/Jersey Mikes price range for lunch but this is locally owned, fresh ingredients. I have throughly enjoyed my meal each time I have eaten here. Why not five stars? Their hours are pretty awful and their menu is impossible to remember and always changing. Their soups are awesome but not always available. Weirdness. This place is much better than the chains that surround it and I highly encourage you to give it a shot and support a local business!
