What's great about Kwik Chek: - this is a true small operation: you can see the ajummas (older women) behind the counter making dumplings right in front of you, and everything (for the take-out counter at Kwik Chek and for the noodle restaurant next door) is made in front of you. - the food is good and vegetarian (probably vegan, though I tend to "don't ask don't tell" in situations like this) friendly. they have an eclectic menu: American and Greek style sandwiches (both meat and veg), and some traditional Korean dishes. We tried fried veggie dumplings (good!), pajeon (green onion pancake - which was great) and an order of tofu bibimbop (delicious). What's no so great: - the parking lot is a disaster: it was small and totally full, with some cars just waiting in spots that weren't actual parking spots. As a tourist, I wasn't sure if there was street parking nearby. - it took *forever* to get my order: I should have called ahead. When I ordered at the counter, I asked for an estimate, and was told maybe 15 minutes. It was more like 40 minutes! - there's a market that sells a few snack items and beer. This was a very unassuming and peculiar place. It looks like a gas station stop, but happens to serve Mediterranean and Korean food! The mandu(dumplings) were delicious. My friend and I tried the chicken, and tofu dumplings. The tofu were my personal favorite- they were incredibly moist and well-seasoned. I also got the kimchi fried rice. The seasoning on it was little light, but a touch of soy sauce from the dumplings complimented it well. To give the Mediterranean food a chance, we also tried the hummus and pita platter, which was also a solid choice. Overall, I'd say it was a good bang for your buck meal. I was pleasantly surprised. My husband and I went to Kwik Chek today and I was very disappointed. I got the falafel plate which consisted of three pieces of falafel, peta wedges, hummus and taziki. The hummus was ok. The taziki had a small amount of cucumber in it .... it was pretty basic to say the least. The peta wedges were much too salty but edible as I had not eaten all day and was hungry. The falafel was so dry and hard that it was completely inedible. I told the employee about the falafel and she brings me one more of the same dry, hard falafel. Dry, hard, and cold to be exact. Actually, I find it hard to believe that a restaurant would serve something so awful. Again, I went to the counter and spoke with an employee who told me they fry the falafel the night before then warm it in an oven for serving the next day. Nope, not a good practice. I was given my money back for the falafel. My husband got the Ninja sandwich which he said was good. Will I go back? Going by the disappointment of the falafel plate I would have to say NO! but because of the redeeming quality of my husband's sandwich I might consider returning ... but no time soon. read more

The food was really good here. I got the half muffuletta and the veggie dumplings. I was surprised by how delicious the dumplings were and the muffuletta was a lot of food but really good also. Don't let the exterior of the shop keep you from walking inside! Driving by it looks like a gas station spot, but the food you get inside is top notch. The menu contains Mediterranean and Korean items with a variety of sandwiches as well. I've been by twice this past month and tried a different Korean dish each time, the kimchi fried rice that I added beef to and the bi bim bop. Both were incredible and came to the table in a sizzling cast iron pan or stone bowl. I'm a huge fan of kimchi and these dishes did not disappoint. Came here a few months ago when in town with my adult kids, upon their raving recommendation, and haven't stopped thinking about how good this comfort food dish was. Organized the whole family to come back over Christmas holidays after Zoo Lights. Everyone got different things - muffuletta, Bi Bim Bop Burger, Bi Bim Bop, several sandwiches; everything was tasty, fresh and cheap. They sell all manner of canned and bottled drinks and snacks to go with your meal. Put in your order, grab a Memphis Flyer newspaper, sit at the counter and people watch Madison Avenue passers by, as you munch on a tasty sandwich. I've been going to Kwik Chek for a decade. It's one of my go-to sandwich shops. They don't just have sandwiches, they have grab-and-go items, and hot noodle/rice/veggie dishes. I hear their hot meals are incredible. However, I'm a sandwich girl so that's my main focus for this review. Aside from the menu of specialty sandwiches, you can make your own. Dine in or get your food to-go. They have subs, rolls and sliced bread. You can keep your sandwich cold or have it toasted in what I think is a pizza oven. I order two sandwiches on the regular: The Veggie Delight or The Turk. The Veggie Delight is out of this world. Vegetables mixed in a Greek yogurt-type sauce with hummus wrapped in a pita. YUM!!!!! The Turk is a turkey sandwich on a roll that's crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. A sandwich is but a lonely slab of layered fodder without tasty chips and a drink. Kwik Chek has a wall of chips with all kinds of varieties. They also have a wide variety of drinks and sweets, from candy to baked cookies and cakes. The cakes are so good. I also love the grab-and-go deviled eggs and salad, if I'm in a rush. FYI...Orders usually take 15-20 minutes. Parking is slim pickings. I have so far tried the muffaletta (sp?), bi bim bop, and gyro...all were delicious, and I know it's hard to imagine that one place could nail all three of these dishes but THEY DO. can't wait to eat my way through the rest of this menu, it's heaven. Just as it's named you want to definitely get a Kwick Check into this grocery/market store. This is probably my go-to spots for hot sizzling bowl of bibimbap around the area. I can hop on a bike ride down Madison Ave and stop by for a quick sandwich to go or sit in the market area for some Korean food. They have a wide range of food from Greek inspired (falafels, pita, gyros, wraps) to Korean inspired dishes (kimchi fried rice, mandus, spicy ramen, bibimbamp). You can also get a club sandwich, muffaletta, or switch it up for the kimchi burger. Sorry, no pizza in this market. They have a grab and go cooler that contains all sorts of baked goods like baklava, cheese cake, kimchi, pasta salad, greek salad. And if you can't make your mind up, there's Korean and American snacks and drinks/beer of your liking. I love market stores with eateries. Every time I come in, I'd see an asian auntie watching her iPad while wrapping mandus and preparing a whole tray full of them. That's when I know they're fresh! Seriously if you see any bad reviews for this place, don't listen to them. Have never been disappointed here. They cook everything to order so it might take some time to get your food but it will be hot and fresh and will never disappoint. Prices are not much higher than any other restaurant in the area.
