I'm so glad I found Mr. Kwong! I'm currently sitting on my couch that he restuffed, and it's like new. Bought a Room & Board couch about four years ago and it started sagging really badly about 2 years in. This year, it started causing a ton of back pain. It was either buy a new couch or get this one restuffed. I chose the latter because: 1. It's cheaper. 2. The frame and fabric are still in great shape. Mr. Kwong did an amazing job with with my two chairs. This was a difficult job because of the large pattern match. So many things going on in the tropical motif that we didn't know where to start. But the years of experience of this wonderful gentleman showed itself off. We hadn't even considered putting the white crane in the center of the back rest and the large orchid as the seat. He has been working as an upholsterer for decades, and it shows. I needed a rather large chair, ottoman and couch reupholstered and he returned the pieces quickly and with beautiful piping, smooth lines, immaculate drape, careful folds, and meticulous fabric button tufting. Kwong's Upholstery is such an incredible find. He is a true artisan, and does beautiful reupholstery work. His pricing is very reasonable. The process was very simple: I sent him photos of my chairs. He sent back a quote for the job and the quantity of fabric I would need, and recommended Knoll Textiles. I ordered the fabric, brought everything to him, and my chairs were done in a week. The results are stunning. I could not be happier with his craftsmanship. He pays a lot of attention to small details in the work that I wouldn't have even known to look for, and the results are so professional. My chairs look like high-end custom chairs. If you have been thinking about the trade-off between re-upholstering chairs (for me, I had puppy damage on the corners) vs purchasing new chairs, definitely contact Kwong. Mr Kwong is very nice. At first I thought he was a bit tough but realized he's just old fashioned (in a good way) and to the point. He doesn't want to waste your time, and he speaks directly and up front. One section of our sectional couch from Scandinavian Designs had sunken in and we needed it fixed. He was hesitant at first to give me a quote over the phone; rightfully so because he had to physically look at my couch even though I texted him photos. Gave me a good quote once I brought my couch to him and he opened up the back of the couch to describe how he would fix it. Kwong is this great old guy who used to work full time reupholstering modern and classic furniture for the likes of Architectura. Now he's semi-retired, and works as a freelancer out of his house. We bought a mid-century set of wood-framed sofa and chairs that he'd reupholstered, and they are fantastic. Since then, we've had some more work done by him, including repairs to a wooden frame. All the work was done quickly and to perfection, and --even better -- at extremely reasonable rates. Although his garage workshop is a quirky jumble of fabrics and equipment, his work is excellent, and extremely detail-oriented. His taste in fabrics is wonderful as well. Kwong is bilingual Chinese/English, and generally works word of mouth. I was so happy with the work he did for us that I promised him I'd put a review up on Yelp to try and help him get the word out about his business. Kwong did an amazing job upholstering an old Knoll Saarinen Executive chair that I bought for $35. As you can imagine a $35 chair doesn't give you much to work with except for the frame. The nasty old fabric needed to be stripped and the dry-rotted foam incinerated. He hand-stitched the fabric I provided and made it look better than new. He also replaced the mounting brackets for the bolts to attach the base to the chair. While it's never cheap to upholster a chair Kwong's price was very reasonable and he got the work done in a few weeks because he wasn't as busy as usual. read more

He does good upholstery work but is not an honest person; he changed prices on me from when I dropped off my chair to when I picked it up. When you drop off your piece and he quotes you a price, remember to write it down and bring a check for that amount when you pick it up; otherwise, if you come to pick up your item and ask him what you owe him, he will raise the price. Also, he only takes checks and cash. While he is good at what he does, I refuse to work with people who charge you based on eyeballing you and looking at your car to size up your means. Kwong was very honest, advising that the cost of the slipcovers would be steep and in his opinion not worth it compared to finding other ways to cover the couch (I subsequently searched on Amazon and found some ready mades that would work). When I realized my cat just wanted to simply be a cat, meaning scratch my 2 expensive (tweed fabric) arm chairs (without any regard to my feelings on the matter), I also realized I made an error in deciding to purchase these chairs. Too late. For months, I screamed at the cat and chased him away from the chairs anytime he was close to them, but, being the sneaky cat he is, he would decapitate my chairs at night, while I slept. I could hardly be happier with my experience with Mr. Kwong. He reupholstered my vintage lounge chair in leather and it looks pristine. The nail heads are perfectly placed, perfect seams, he even repaired the insides. The chair is truly an heirloom now. His price beat out all the competition but his work speaks for itself. We have had these 4 chairs for 35+ years. Within 1 year of the purchase the chair seats split.......very disapponting. Kwong is the man! (although I think his name is actually Yick). Thank you, Yelpers! I called him last Thursday, and he asked me to email pictures of my 4 dining chairs for reupholstery. I already had the material (a microsuede to match my Pottery Barn sofa and armchairs). Another (highly reviewed) place I contacted in South San Francisco quoted me double(!), and somebody in the City never returned my messages. Friday, I tried to drop my chairs off, but I got lost, and needed to head back home for a meeting. When I called Kwong to let him know I would need to drop the chairs off later, he volunteered to come pick them up at my house! And now, Kwong just delivered my beautifully reupholstered chairs with the seat frames reinforced. They look beautiful, and are now actually comfortable to sit in! If I could give Mr Kwong more stars I would! He is an artist with upholstery repair. We have a puppy who decided to destroy our couch including the pillows. We do not want to buy new furniture till she is older, so I decided to see about getting them repaired. I came across Mr. Kwong's Yelp info and saw all the rave reviews.... I contacted him and I brought the ripped cushions to him. He was honest and said they were pretty far gone and he was not sure what he could do. After 30 years and several cats, my 6 dining room chairs had seen better days. Thanks to the excellent reviews on Yelp, I decided to call Mr. Kwong. He came to my house the same day, gave me a reasonable estimate and left with the seats as well as the seat from another chair I had in the living room. He didn't need to take the chairs themselves since the seats were removable and he brought his tools with him. He returned them last Saturday looking better than new. While he was here I asked him to look at a Queen Anne chair I had in my bedroom. It's 50-60 years old, wood framed and has coil springs, still in good shape but I hate the color. He quoted a reasonable price on it also, so that's the next job he'll do for us. Unlike many other upholsterers, he has no problem if you provide your own fabric, he'll just charge a fair labor price. I highly recommend him. read more

Kwong did an excellent job of recovering the cushions, and he also replaced the 20 yr old foam with a much higher quality foam (now, more comfortable chairs).
