I went in with heavy roots and Kyle worked magic on my hair adding highlights to help lift the yellow (as I prefer platinum) without using heavy bleach that would damage my hair. First off, let me tell you a little bit about myself and my hair. I've basically rocked the same look since I was 15- long, straight layers. I've messed around with bangs a few times (post break up, obviously) and used to dye it in high school. The extent of my styling is either air drying or blow drying half way. Though over the years I'd been to a few salons (in Beverly Hills, Venice, and Marina Del Rey), I often went to a barber because I didn't think going to hairstylist was worth it, and I like some of the barbering techniques. Though I do have to say I don't care for a lot of these retro barber shops that have popped up in the past 10 years. It's all assembly line cut-rate mediocrity at an inflated price. By chance, I ran into Bobby back when he was running his own salon on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice and have been a client ever since. He's now at this new salon. This guy not only knows all the hair styling salon-type things, but also has a background in barbering, so you get both. The guy has technique and he cares. He wants everything to look good, so he does the attention-to-detail. This is just something you have to care about, and if you do, you do, and if you don't, you don't. Bobby cares. I also happen to like the guy personally, but who cares about that. The important thing is he's good at what he does. Here's the other thing: the guy can take a picture and make your hair look like the photo. I always used to think that this was bullsh*t, but he makes it work. And here's the genius: it's probably unrealistic to expect to walk out of a salon with a cut that looks like some idiot model, but he tailors the cut to fit your face and hair type and all that. So it's not just an imitation, but it's a organic blend of some ideal you might have and the reality of what one has to work with. He's done some cool cuts for me and I get complements. Before that, I wouldn't have spent the dough on a haircut. Also, his cuts last, so when you factor that in compared to a barber, it comes out to about the same price, but you've got a superior cut. Definitely would recommend! Find street parking, there is usually meter spaces right outside that have a 3 hour limit. Ask Kyle for his opinion when it comes to color/cut and just trust that he knows best. When I first started going to Kyle I gave him all these suggestions (I tried every hair color) but ultimately he came up with the best color for me on his own. I've been going to Kyle for about a decade and the color is always beautiful. I have the most flattering color of dark honey blonde balayage for my skin tone. It looks very natural like I've just spent the summer at the beach. He also does an amazing cut. Don't be worried if it doesn't take him very long to do the cut - that's just because he's been doing hair for long time. I would have been fine with the poor treatment if I'd left with decent hair, but didn't. He struggled with a simple pin curl and seemed overwhelmed by basic tasks like sectioning. I have been seeing Shannon for hair cuts, trims and balayage for probably 3 or more years now. When I first started seeing her I was attempting to grow my hair out after having a pixie cut for 10 years. She has done such a great job over the years. I even grew my hair out to my mid back over the course of a year out to my mid back for my wedding last year. It looked so healthy, I never thought I would be able to grow what used to be fine stringy hair. She always gives a great cut and I love the way she colors my hair.
