Came across this spot while exploring downtown Menlo Park. And we decided to try and dine in. The place is the cutest with a chill vibe to it. The host/server was quick to accommodate and guided us to our table. She offered us the menu and I was delighted to see many options to choose from and it was nice to see pictures on them. Elected to try a couple of things and didn't wait long to be served. The sashimi and sushi tasted really fresh and delicious. My main entree sea bass was baked to perfection too. Everything tasted so good. Enjoyes our meal and I'd love to return and try other few things on their menu for next time.

    very good tasty!

good tasty,I recommend here. I recomen premium omakase nigiri, kyosho signature sashimi, fish from Japan

This was a nice little surprise find. The ambiance was cool and cozy. My family found it by chance and I was really happy with the quality of service and food. I'd love to go back and try the mochi donut!

    Tempura Udon

The ambiance of Kyosho is cozy and intimate, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal. The service was excellent. We ordered the chirashi bowl, tempura udon, and gyu don--everything was delicious, and the portion sizes were generous. Definitely worth the price.

Visited for lunch on a Friday and it wasn't busy. I ordered the Kyosho Gold Box and had to share my sashimi with my dining mate. The food was great. California roll was fresh and went down smoothly. I loved the unagi and chicken katsu. Servers were nice and food came out quick. This is a place that is quite small on the outside but inside it feels cozy and not squished.

Such a hidden gem in Menlo Park! Fresh ingredients and friendly staff! My husband and I ordered the following: 1. Kyosho roll ($22) - lobster salad, fatty tuna, cucumber, avocado, sweet potato, and pickled wasabi. Perfect one bite size that fits in my mouth without being overly stuffed, great flavors! 3. Musketeer Roll ($18) - Spicy tuna, hamachi , salmon, cucumber and tobiko. Perfect amount of spice and fish. Very fresh! Highly recommend! 4. Premium nigiri omakase ($60) - Every single nigiri tasted very fresh! Even the uni didn't taste briney! The seared tuna was my favorite! This came with a bowl of amebi soup. 5. Clay pot unagi donburi ($27) - wow! One of the best unagi donburi I've ever had! The unagi wasn't very boney like others I've had. Perfect amount of sauce on the unagi. Love how the added a bed of salad and ginger as well! This also came with a bowl of miso soup! Must try! Overall, will come again to try the 7 course pre-fixe dinner. I believe it is $109 and for the 6 course, it is $99.

My fav hidden gems in Bay Area for good-quality nigiri and sashimi! Price is very reasonable, most of sushi places are too overpriced in sf. Highly recommend this place! Some Bay Area celebrities have been here too!

Amazing little sushi joint in Menlo Park. Everything I had was delicious! It's a small restaurant with seating for about 24 with a sushi bar that seats 4. The toro trio was phenomenal as was the edamame with truffle salt. Also recommend The hamachi crudo & A5 wagyu tatami.

***update*** After my partner posted the review, I got so many phone calls from the restaurants and many no caller id calls at 5am in the morning. That's just insane! Stop harassing customers! ----------- I called to place a take out lunch order on Wednesday. Before I called, I saw a "lunch menu" picture on yelp posted long time ago. I asked the lady over phone if they still have the lunch menu. She said we never had lunch menu. I repeated that I saw the picture on yelp. She said we never had it but we can do it now which confused me. But regardless, I ordered sashimi lunch, nigiri lunch and crazy rolls. She told me she would call me when my food is ready. The ordering experience was okay even though she was kinda impatient. When I got to the restaurant, no customer there. I told the lady (I think same lady who took my order) I'm here to pick up. She looked at me a little annoyed and said your food is not ready yet. I know you haven't called me so of course it's not ready yet. But doesn't mean I can come in and let you know I'm here and wait for my food at the restaurant. The vibe was dry. I was kinda awkward. And when my food was ready, I asked me extra ginger, wasabi and soy sauce. She didn't let me finished my request and said with annoyed face:"it's all in the bag already". Alright. Calm down. I took my bag and left. While my partner was driving, I open the bag and want to eat my food. And guess what, no soy sauce! Not a single packet! Oh I was so annoyed! Because of her attitude, it already negatively affected my anticipation to my lunch. And the missing sauce just took it to a different level. The lunch is not cheap, especially with the small portion. At least you can provide a good service. No! We had to u-turn and went back and parked and asked for soy sauce! When I went back, she didn't even apologize and she only wanted to give me two packets. We could have a great lunch and possibly become regulars. But now you just lost two customers forever.

My original review was reported, so here it is again. Why am I bothering to rewrite it? Because after leaving a 1-star review, I received three calls from the restaurant and over ten "No Caller ID" calls--some as early as 5 a.m. This behavior is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I'm currently traveling, but if this harassment continues, I may consider legal action when I return. I stand by my review. I wasn't initially planning to post on Google, but after the restaurant's hostile response--most likely from someone named Tina--I will be sharing my experience there as well. Here's what happened: I went for a quick lunch and placed a phone order with Tina, the woman with yellow hair. She was rude, answering the phone with a simple "Hello" and then hanging up abruptly without any proper etiquette. When we picked up our order, everything seemed fine until Tina started providing terrible service. We asked for soy sauce, and she insisted it was already in the bag--it wasn't. This forced us to turn around and return to the restaurant. There was no apology for the inconvenience--just poor customer service all around. No one wants to deal with your miserable behavior!

Omakase sashimi and omakase Nigiri Omakase
    Jane D.

Restaurant was on the smaller side! We did not have a reservation and were fine on a Sunday night at around 7pm. Service was prompt and friendly, but not overly in your face. We got the omakase nigiri, omakase sashimi, and the crazy roll. Omakase was a good value - 10 pieces for $45. Everything was super fresh and tasty. Fish was good quality too from what I could tell (not an expert, but I've eaten a decent amount of good and / or Michelin starred nigiri). We also got a miso soup, which was extremely salty (but I loved it anyway because it had a shrimp head in there). Would definitely come back.

Maguro sashimi and sushi ordered To Go--delivered in this great little box
    Ron M.

Great Japanese restaurant serving both traditional and fusion style dishes, but mostly focusing on sushi. We recently ordered a large maguro sashimi order To Go from Kyosho, and it was delivered in the coolest little box (see pic). Udon tempura was also perfectly done with ideally seasoned broth and perfect temp udon noodles. Tempura shrimp were correctly made to be perfectly straight--this was a great dish that reminded me of my childhood.

My very first omakase! It was such a great experience! Location: They have limited street parking available around the area. Not too sure if there is a parking lot nearby. The restaurant itself is super small but very nice. Food: I did the Omakase which was a great experience. They have different price levels of omakase, but I did the cheapest one. It's well worth the price. Each round is the perfect amount of food. I did the 8-course omakase and I was not overly full or hungry after. The omakase also comes with a sake tasting for one of the rounds. Service: The workers are super nice. Our server did a great job telling us what we were eating and how we should eat it. Overall, this was a very memorable experience, and would definitely come back again. It's a great place to do your first omakase if you are looking to spend under $100.

Is this a Japanese owned restaurant?

While I don't know if the owners are Japanese, the staff and sushi chef are Chinese.

How long is a soft opening last? Seems that the fish is being seated to help with fish that - maybe isn't as fresh as it needs to be for sashimi.…

All fishes are preped and serced by the same day. I believe all Japanese restaurants do it the same way. As I know they get the fish in every morning and prep them before business hour.

What I ordered: Stanford roll: it had a nice mix of spicy tuna, crab, avocado, hamachi, with the sauces tying everything together really well Nigiri combo: 9 pieces of chef's choice fish and a lot of them were fish belly cuts which are fattyyyyy and melt in your mouth Hamachi lover: surprisingly my 2nd favorite (I normally don't like hamachi that much). It has hamachi, avocado and then hamachi on top, each bite was a big mouthful piece, so yummy Super salmon roll: this was probably my most favorite, especially the torched salmon and tobiko on top. The service is nothing to write home about either. Their shop is small, and they staff only two waiters for the entire restaurant on a weekend afternoon. Those poor waiters were sprinting the entire time we were there. The food also took forever to make. Skewers had a 20-30-minute wait. The Sukiyaki hotpot entree took 40-50 minutes, and all they needed to do was slice the meat and arrange the veggies. We still had to cook the raw meat ourselves, mind you. I don't understand why it would take them 45 minutes to prep. Not being able to get a hold of the server to check on the status of our dish didn't help either, as they were busy zooming around because the restaurant was understaffed. Overall, there is a mismatch between the price they are charging and the overall experience we got. They either need to increase the portion or significantly increase the service to match the pricetag.

Everything we ordered was absolutely scrumptious and worth the price. Our favorites were the Crunchy Lobster Roll, packed with lobster salad, salmon, avocado & cucumber, tobiko, and topped with crunchy flakes and house sauce (a fresh roll) and the Wagyu & Sea Roll, which combined shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado, and seared Kobe beef (a cooked roll)! Super rich and satisfying!! The Scallop Butter Yaki was also delicious, with very tender and naturally sweet scallops and seared mushrooms in house-made butter sauce. We also ordered Oyster Shooter, a good combination of oyster, ikura, quail egg, ponzu sauce, and sake. Shot was not too strong but very well combined! The highlight of our meal was definitely Beef Tongue Skewer (a daily special). We're very impressed, as the skewer was incredibly tender, fresh, and melted in our mouths. We paired everything with a Sho Chiku Bai Nigori sake, which is soooo warm and comforting, complemented our meal nicely. Service was very quick, and the staff was very attentive throughout our visit. The pacing was just right, nothing felt rushed, and each course was thoughtfully decorated! I enjoyed every moment during the experience. We started with warm house sake to warm up, and luckily it paired really nicely with the meal and made everything feel extra cozy. Then for the courses, I had: - Starter: Kumiage Yuba with light house sauce and wasabi, I'm so impressed!!! At first I thought I was eating some fish liver because the texture was similar, but turn out it's tofu and they makes it excellent! A very nice starter - Appetizer: Squid tempura, pickled radish, mushroom & veggies, and tamago. I really like the tempura, crispy but not greasy, nice mix of textures - Sashimi plate: 3 pieces of bluefin tuna otoro, very fresh and buttery, just melts in my mouth! Love it - Oden bowl: I'm so in love with the broth, sweet, umami and comforting. It had braised pork belly, radish and konjac jelly, and all taste amazing, could not find any words to complain - Grilled fish: a very simple dish with not much seasoning. Fish was paired with some salty pickled plum and sweet potato. - Steamed tofu with abalone: I really like abalone texture, they made it very tender and easy to chew. Also not much seasoning so that you can feel the natural taste of the seafood, love that! - Hotate scallop with persimmon sauce: I don't like persimmon that much, but the scallops taste fresh and sweet - Rice bowl with pickles and miso soup: this is the 2nd final course, they have 2 options to upgrade from the white rice, uni ikura (+$16) & A5 wagyu (+$26) - we have 2 people so we order both to try a little bit of everything. Both worth the upgrade, but I prefer a5 wagyu - Matcha yokan with red beans and hot tea: the dessert was a bit too sweet for me, even though they served with hot tea to balance. But still, a great dish! Overall, really solid omakase spot on the Peninsula. I'd definitely come back if I had the chance!

Came here for a Mother's Day lunch with my family. The decor felt understated and calming, and both the host and server were very kind and welcoming. Service was definitely on the slower side -- we started the first course around 1pm and dessert wasn't served until about 2:40pm -- but I suppose that's part of the intentional, course-by-course dining experience. We ordered one of the lunch set menus. A few thoughts on the dishes: * House made tofu - Delicious. Light, delicate, and creamy, topped with wasabi and soy sauce. 9/10 * Appetizer assortment - A box with four small dishes (Nanohana steeped in dashi, simmered daikon radish, Tai marinated in vinaigrette, tamago). The tamago was less sweet than what you'd usually get at sushi restaurants (just okay for me, 6/10). The daikon was tasty (7.5/10), the fish had good flavor but a firmer texture than I prefer (7/10), and the vegetables were well-prepared (7.5/10). Everything was served room temperature. Overall, the flavors and sauces were very mild and subtle, in line with more traditional Japanese cooking. * The sashimi dish was fresh and delicious. 9/10 * Pork belly with vegetables - The pork belly was extremely tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were cooked nicely. The sauce was delicious. I almost wished it came with rice, but it was lightly seasoned and balanced as-is. 8/10 * Gindara marinated in miso - Lovely buttery, flaky texture. I've had similar miso black cod dishes elsewhere that were a bit more flavorful, but still very enjoyable. 8/10 * Chawanmushi - Very smooth, custardy texture with hints of citrus/yuzu, crab, and shiso. The crab texture was nice, though I didn't get a ton of crab flavor. * Octopus - A bit too chewy for my taste, though it paired nicely with the sweetness of the plum. I especially liked the nagaimo (yam) for both flavor and texture. 7.5/10 * Rice with kelp, wasabi cucumber, and simmered baby sardines - The kelp had a great texture and slightly tangy flavor. The wasabi cucumber was a bit too salty for me, even with the rice, but the baby sardines were delicious with just a hint of salt. 8/10 * Miso soup - Nice and light. 8/10 * Dessert (matcha yo-kan) - Green tea jelly with raspberries. Nice texture, though I personally prefer more pudding-like desserts. Not overly sweet, but I'm generally not a fan of beans in desserts. 7.5/10 One especially thoughtful touch: they served dessert to my mom on a special plate with additional Japanese candies and little origami pieces made by the staff. It felt very warm and personal. Overall, a good experience. They also offer à la carte options in addition to the set menus. The space feels intimate and would probably be best for smaller groups or quieter meals.

The space is intimate, with only 8 counter seats, so you're served directly by chef Li. To my surprise, all of the seats were full on a Friday at lunch. I didn't want to drink too much at lunch, but they had a $29 sake flight of three 1.5 oz pours, which was just the right amount to pair with the sushi but still be able to go back to work after lunch! Pre sushi: 1. Pickled baby ginger: I love this stuff, and he was good about refilling it 2. Crab with Japanese citrus jelly and shiso: a generous amount of sweet, fresh crab 3. Ankimo: two pieces, served with wasabi 4. Signature octopus: massaged 1 hour and stewed 1 hour - very flavorful and tender 5. Steamed abalone: served over soba with abalone liver sauce 6. Seaweed shot 7. Chawanmushi with scallops and caviar Sushi: 1. Hokkaido scallop with yuzu and sea salt 2. Spanish mackerel 3. Akami: lean bluefin tuna 4. Kinmedai: golden eye snapper, torched 5. Isaki: 3 line grunt fish 6. Kelp cured black snapper, shiso leaf, yuzu 7. Chutoro 8. Saba: mackerel with kelp 9. Otoro: torched, topped with uni The scallop and kinmedai were the highlights for me. We also got one of the à la carte add ons: the hand chopped fatty tuna and uni hand roll. To finish: red miso soup At the end, you can watch the chef preparing the bento boxes, which was a good reminder for me to keep my eye out for the next available pickup. The fish was high quality, and the pieces were cut to the right size (I've been to way too many places with unappealingly large cuts). Each course was thoughtfully prepared, and pacing was consistent. For the quality and quantity of food, as well as the service and dining experience, this was a hot deal for $125 a person. We will definitely be coming back!

The presentation is also lovely. I also loved the pickled ginger (that they keep refilling for you). Overall would highly recommend!
