    Sea trout and spicy edamame
    Elizabeth S.

I've been eating at Sushi Kazoku since the initial opening of their old tiny location on Laurel St.. I was thrilled when they took over the new restaurant space on ECR even closer to me. The sushi has always been fresh and the service great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The new location is exponentially better with more space and a comfortable atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It still has the neighborhood energy of the old place though- very family oriented.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They also have a cool wall of Gundam's and Japanese anime motifs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I always get chef's choice sashimi (solid fresh, generous sizes), some spicy garlic edamame and miso soup. Depending on who I'm dining with I may get a roll or two also, and I'm always enjoying a nice bottle of sake to go with. A couple weekends ago, my party of three ordered the veggie tempura and agedashi tofu to go with. The veggie tempura was great until I bit into the broccoli, and there were brown, wilted areas. At first, I was going to leave it be, but I come here often. I know they care. So I told the server. She said she would bring it to the kitchens attention. The broccoli happened to be one of the last pieces. So there was no point sending it back. The agedashi tofu was okay, but I was not a fan of the hard fried outer skin. I prefer the lighter fried coating that compliments the tofu rather than serving as an encasememt. They didn't have the spicy, garlic edamame that evening. So we didn't order. It was very nice of them to bring us regular edamame on the house though. Next time I am craving sushi, I will be back to my fave local spot! I look forward to trying other dishes also!

I didn't expect this quality of food from a restaurant located in a suspicious corner on El Camino! A colleague brought us here and everyone was properly impressed. Very fresh fish, good price for the quality + amount of food, and lots of varieties.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Super fresh fish, great service, and a nicely updated interior.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommend the Papillon and Chirashi bowl.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Sushi Kazoku is a local favorite and that is easily seen with how busy they get around 5pm on a Friday.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Although I thought we arrived quite early, there were already filled tables.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is a parking lot on the side but it's not plentiful unless you get lucky with a spot. We were sat quickly and our waitress was helpful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love their water cups, and they made the space feel intimate yet there's plenty of seating even in the back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the Papillon roll which was really delicious. The fish was very fresh. Also their takoyaki is notable, it doesn't feel too oily which I really enjoyed and there were good chucks of squid inside. Now I understand why this spot is well loved, and will be coming again.

We decided to order sushi to go, and overall it was a good experience. The sushi was fresh and tasted great, and I would definitely go back. It's hard to find good sushi, and this spot left us happy on taste and quality. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dinner area has plenty of seating, which is nice[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], Parking is a bit challenging since it's limited. The big issue for me is the front entrance was chaotic. It wasn't very clear where to go for seating, ordering, or picking up to-go orders, and a better system (or even a Host) at the front counter would really help. No one ever asked the crowd at the front if we needed help. We had to grab their attention just to pick up a paid to go order. That said, the food itself was excellent, and I hope they're able to improve the front-of-house flow because the sushi is definitely worth it.

    Assorted Sashimi (20 Pieces)

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We had a super great meal here recently at their new bigger location![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If you come within the first hour of opening, even on a weekend, there's no real wait. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Definitely got busier after 12 pm though.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Portions are quite large and at a pretty fair price and we definitely brought home leftovers but also yes, we over ordered. The 20 piece sashimi is super worth it by Peninsula standards as the cuts of sashimi are thick! Rolls are pretty filled on the inside with a quality topping (dragon roll had such a good layer of assorted raw fish on the top!), and a thin rice layer which is so nice to see. The tempura udon came with a generous side of hot tempura which we couldn't finish! The only thing I would skip is the agedashi tofu - not enough flavor (needs more salt) and not my preference of crisp on the outside as I prefer a lighter tempura/mochi like batter. 100% would return again!

New location. Very nice restaurant with soft music, nice and spacious...much bigger than previous location. They provide complimentary edamame, water and tea. Food portions are generous. The rice bowls include a really nice salad with fresh veggies and a delicious sesame dressing and miso soup, good value. The tempura udon is ok, 2 shrimp and several vegetables. Service is very good, cordial and attentive. Lots of parking.

Kazoku Roll - tuna, hamachi topped w/ tuna, hamachi, avocado, tobiko, scallion, spicy aioli and unagi sauce

Sushi Kazoku recently moved to downtown San Carlos and it's a noticeable upgrade from their previous location. The new space feels larger, brighter, and more open, with a clean, simple design that makes it more comfortable than before. We started with the House Salad, which was impressively fresh and had a nice mix of crisp lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and tomatoes, topped with a flavorful Japanese sesame dressing. It had the right balance of tang and nuttiness. The sashimi was the highlight. The fish was top quality and incredibly fresh -- you can tell they take pride in their sourcing. Each piece was cut just right, not too thick or thin, allowing the texture and flavor to shine. Presentation was elegant without being overdone. Service was excellent throughout. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything arrived at the right pace.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]They recently moved to a bigger space down the street from their previous location, and the food is still amazing![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I really love their sashimi and the quality of their sushi is great. They also provided edamame on the house too. Items Ordered: - Chirashi bowl ($36): Comes with an assortment of sashimi that are all huge pieces! I think there were a few pieces this time compared to previous times that I've ordered the chirashi bowl at the previous location. You can definitely split this dish with another person and it is enough sashimi for everyone. The chirashi bowl also comes with a side of salad and miso soup too. - Romeo and Juliet roll ($19): One of my favorite rolls! Comes with salmon and avocado with scallop on top. - Chicken Karaage ($10): For an appetizer, it came with a lot of pieces of karaage, probably 7-8 pieces and goes great with the spicy aoili sauce. [[HIGHLIGHT]]So happy for Sushi Kazoku to have a bigger space to serve more customers![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Definitely a go-to sushi spot in the area.

This review is based on takeout. Online ordering is easy. We were pleased that they have vegetarian options. Pick up is challenging with only small parking spaces next to the restaurant; otherwise it's street parking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is only indoor dining.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] If you are waiting for a table or to go order, there are a couple seats outside. Upon pick up, the order was ready on the front counter. You provide order # and name to the host or server. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The indoor dining space is very nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our order included plain udon, vegetarian purple rain roll, and cucumber/avocado maki. The broth for udon was flavorful. Little disappointed in the sushi rice of the purple rain roll because it was a bit mushy... not sure if the purple yam added extra moisture that made the rice that way. Otherwise, appreciate the vegetarian options.

Delicious, fresh and tasty sushi, but a bit overpriced and the food serving took forever

Came across this place as I was browsing through Yelp. I initially thought it was another "generously" rated place but I am glad I gave it a try. First, the service was excellent. Second, they have both indoor and outdoor seating. In terms of food, their sashimi was fresh. Although I preferred less sauce on my rolls, but they were delicious. The portion on the curry katsu was huge. The thickness/cut on the katsu was perfectly sliced. Most places would serve a thinnly sliced meat, resulted in overlooking. At sushi kazoku, it was perfectly cut and fried - crispy on the outside and moist in the inside. Yummy

    Sohrob H.

Great find for anyone craving high-quality sushi. The fish is fresh and the rolls are well prepared. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It does get busy, during peak hours so I do recommend reservations but it is quiet inside and good for a date night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service is pretty good overall I did notice some other tables get served before us after arriving after but maybe they are/were regulars? Aside from the that the sushi is well worth it.

Glad that that wasn't the case! Ordered xiao long bao, fried tofu, sheng jian bao, Beijing potstickers, pea shoots, and green curry with rice. - Xiao long bao: quite tasty and probably my favorite in this area. The soup inside was really sweet and savory and there was a lot of it. Meat was tender and the flavor was spot on. The skin was nice and thin, but with enough elasticity that it didn't tear when the dumplings were still hot out of the steamer and being picked up with chopsticks. I wish they would steam on napa cabbage instead of the foil cups though. Towards the end, the dough was trying to stick and that's no bueno. Also, wouldn't cabbage be cheaper? - Fried tofu: favorite dish of the night, surprisingly. Super crispy coating, and the soy sauce they serve it with has enough salt and flavor to really make it shine! Will order this again and again. - Sheng jian bao: I have serious doubts that these are made in-house (though they might be?). They looked like the frozen ones that every restaurant with sheng jian bao on the menu seems to be serving nowadays. Not that they're bad. In fact, they're pretty good, with a good amount of soup inside, but the dough was a little tough. - Beijing potstickers: like regular potstickers, only less good. Didn't like the dough on these, but they were super juicy! Wish I'd known that before I bit into mine and all the juice came shooting out of the opposite end. Don't be like me, eat this with the butt end in your spoon to catch all the liquid. - Pea shoots: I spit out half of these onto my plate because they were so tough that I couldn't chew the woody stems. I haaaaaaate when restaurants do this - the people preparing the food know what a tender pea shoot feels like. If they're not good, don't serve them to customers. It was like $17 for a plate of greens that were almost inedible, and super unenjoyable to eat. Aside from the poor quality of the veggies themselves, the way they prepared them was perfect, and the flavor was so good. Made me sad that I could barely eat them. - Green curry: ok, but not great. There wasn't enough flavor and there was too much heat. I expect Thai curry to be spicy, but not marking this on the menu for someone who is just trying this for the first time feels like a mistake. Also, not letting someone choose their level of spice also feels like a mistake. Speaking to the menu, there are things about it that make it hard to order. Basically, everything is in English, which is fine, but there are dishes that are translated or simplified that make it hard to know what's what. "Pork buns" are sheng jian bao. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't asked, and to me and most people I know, a pork bun is just another simplified name for a char siu bao. The only reason why I knew they had sheng jiang bao on the menu was because of the photos on Yelp. Maybe just calling it sheng jiang bao or "pan fried dumplings" would be more helpful. Photos or a brief description (or Chinese characters, for those who can read them) would have been even more helpful. Other notes: the waitstaff is friendly enough, and the kitchen is efficient. Wish they had ice water here. Water is served in carafes that appear to get reused without first being washed, with a sprig of some kind of green thing inside. It goes from the kitchen tap into their fridge to cool a bit before being served, but there is no ice. A water filter on that tap would go a long way to make the water taste more palatable. Not sure what the green thing was, but it didn't impart any appreciable flavor. Will ask for ice next time and hope that it's available because at least if the water were actually cold, it would mask the tap flavor. We'll be back to try other things on the menu, and to order the XLB and fried tofu again, but with tempered expectations.

I ordered their #1 recommendation, the Homura Aburasoba, and immediately scarfed it down. Popping the perfectly runny egg yolk into the noodles was incredibly satisfying, and every bite was packed with rich, savory umami. The noodles themselves were thick, chewy, and had a great bite that held up well to the sauce. I also tried the Wagyu dish, but it arrived more cooked than it appeared in the photos, which made the texture and overall experience a bit underwhelming. The sauce also leaned on the creamier side, which isn't my favorite pairing with Wagyu, so I'd probably skip that one next time. That said, the Homura Aburasoba alone is worth coming back for and easily earns Kajiken a well-deserved 5/5.

Pretty much everything on the menu is good here. If there's something that sounds interesting, get it. If you've been curious about spaghetti dishes at southern Chinese restaurants, get one. The General's Chicken is actually insanely good here, like the best lunch special I know anywhere, and it's General's Chicken. Hainan chicken, salt and pepper spare ribs, rice clay pots, eggplant dishes, and even Chinese curry are items I commonly see ordered around me. The tofu seafood claypot is fantastic. Pretty sure they have Peking spareribs and they were great iirc. The chow fun dishes are only good, not super exceptional, you rarely see people order them. Alright the few things I've noticed that could be improved have all happened when I come closer to closing than opening. We also decided to try a couple of things we had never ordered before after seeing other tables enjoy them. The beef chow fun looked amazing when we saw someone else order it, so we gave it a try. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The noodles were on the dry side and lacked the flavorful wok hei and savory taste that I usually look for in a good beef chow fun. It was just missing that something special. We also ordered the Chinese chicken salad because we wanted something lighter to balance out the meal. I was expecting the traditional shredded chicken with lettuce, but instead it came with thin tortilla-style chips underneath. That really changed the whole feel of the dish for me. I was hoping for a refreshing salad, but the chips made it feel more greasy, and the mustard oil dressing was not really my preference. The chicken was also a little dry. I probably would not order this again. The good news is the salt and pepper spare ribs were still delicious, just like we expected. They remain one of our favorites here. Overall, I would stick with the dishes we already know and love and skip the beef chow fun and chicken salad next time.

It was so much food that we didn't take part in their extra noodles after finishing the bowl. The beef pancake rolls were a very close second, though there wasn't anything different that they added compared to other places. The rest of the dishes were pretty good though I would definitely pass on the wonton soup next time as the soup just tasted like dried seaweed (something I don't like). Another location for Udon Mugizo and they definitely do not disappoint. I've had positive…read moreexperiences at their Mountain View and San Francisco locations. Their udon dishes are top notch! While the menu is limited to udon, anytime is the right time for noodles. Who knew there is so many variations--cold, creamy, brothy, nabeyaki styles! It's possible to order rice bowls, but why when the restaurant name is clearly UDON! We ordered the Mentai Cream Sauce Udon and Cold Niku Spicy Udon and it was absolutely delicious. I was a bit hesitant with the "spicy" but the spicy was completely harmless, so long as you like spicy. Service was quick and friendly and I wouldn't hesitate to return--definitely a change of pace to all the other ramen places in the area.

I honestly feel like I could make a better bowl at home. The tempura wasn't light or crispy, just very average. The udon broth was bland, and despite advertising handmade noodles, the texture felt surprisingly like frozen convenience noodles. On my previous visit, the noodles at least had that authentic, chewy texture, but not this time. After waiting nearly an hour, most of our party left majority of their udon unfinished. I really don't understand the long hype and constant lines. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is nice, but the food quality simply isn't keeping up.
