Came here for dinner and the restaurant itself was really nice. The outdoor patio was a great place to sit, and service was very attentive throughout the meal. Unfortunately the quality of the food didn't justify the price for me. I don't think I'd come back, especially with so many other sushi spots in the area that offer better value. Food-wise, I thought it was a bit underwhelming. The hanabi roll and amberjack were both pretty good, but I can't really say the same for the rest of what we ordered. The portions felt quite small, and a lot of the dishes had so many toppings and sauces that it was actually hard to taste the fish itself. Considering the price point, I was expecting the quality to stand out more. Our server also repeatedly encouraged us to order the $78 per person tasting menu because "it was cheaper". While it was cheaper if we were planning to order every dish included, we were only planning to order a handful of items, so it actually cost us much more. It felt a bit strange in the moment like there was pressure to switch.

Sushi Roku, in my opinion, is most memorable for its service and ambiance, but unfortunately, not the sushi. I wish I could say otherwise, but I've honestly had better sushi elsewhere for a better price. While the overall dining experience was enjoyable, the food itself didn't quite live up to my expectations. We stopped by for my birthday, and I will say, this place does an amazing sweet job on making you feel special for your birthday, which I truly appreciated and was shocked by. FOOD: 7/10 SERVICE: 10/10 (Shoutout to Alvin!!!) AMBIANCE: 10/10 FOOD: 7/10 The sushi was pretty standard overall. There were definitely some standout dishes, like the Fluke Kumquat Sashimi, Salmon Sake Nigiri with Yuzu shavings and the Crispy Rice Cakes, which I enjoyed. However, some of the fish didn't taste as fresh as I was expecting. A few of the rolls also reminded me of the kind of sushi you might find at an American grocery store; that's honestly the closest comparison I can think of. I am still stunned by the complimentary birthday dessert on the house. It was a huge cotton candy fluff on a plate with Happy Birthday written in chocolate. Alvin poured a little syrup on it and lit the cotton candy on fire, which then melted with a surprise of 2 desserts underneath!!! It was a strawberry cheesecake mousse and a scoop of ice cream. They even had a huge candle sparkler. This truly was the best birthday dessert I have ever received at a restaurant, and I was so shocked it was on the house. SERVICE: 10/10 Service at Sushi Roku was everything. Between the receptionists being very welcoming, the managerial staff checking on every table and being very nice, taking away our dishes as we were done, and our waiter, Alvin!!! Alvin was one of the nicest waiters ever and was very engaging with us. I was very shocked when he brought out the complimentary birthday dessert on the house. He even engaged in small talk as we were about to leave, which was refreshing. Also to mention, they place a cute Happy Birthday sign with twinkle lights on your table when it is your birthday! The sweetest!! AMBIANCE: 10/10 Everywhere you look, there is a modern aesthetic at Sushi Roku with fine details and designs. The restaurant is very spacious, and I love the open doors to bring in the natural lighting from the sun.

We had a reservation for 5 and were seated promptly upon checking in. Outdoor seating was perfect given it was such a warm evening down south. Service: 5/5 Staff were friendly, efficient, and checked in on us often. Food: 4/5 Deluxe sushi plate was enough to be shared among 5 people. Quality of the fish was fresh and buttery, but none of the pieces stood out. Star of our dinner was Chilean sea bass. It was incredibly tender and tasty to eat; miso sauce was to die for! This is a must-get entrée for your meal.

Service was great and the food was ok except the donburi beef. The restaurant was clean as well. I don't mind coming back here again because of their service and try other food on the menu.

This specific location of the trendy, contemporary Japanese fusion chain is housed at Stanford Shopping Center, making it easy to rescue my kiddo from dorm food. :) We were seated immediately for an early Sunday dinner despite not having made a reservation in advance. I probably wouldn't order the Fluke Kumquat again as it barely had any discernible flavor despite the menu description stating it contained yuzu vinaigrette, but our Deluxe Sushi Plates (yellowtail, tuna, salmon, shrimp, albacore & choice of baked crab or spicy tuna cut roll, plus scallop, sea bream & toro jalapeño cut roll) were very good. For dessert, the Sorbet (choice of yuzu, mango, lychee, or raspberry) was delicious. The Chocolate Volcano Cake was tasty as well, but almost made me late for my flight as there was no indication provided of how much time it requires to prepare!

Very nicely decorated restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance is honestly perfect for a date night or girl's night out. Despite being a fairly big restaurant with lots of seating, they are super popular especially on weekends so I highly recommend making a reservation. We didn't make a reservation and were seated at the bar which would've been fine normally. However, I was seated at the very edge of the bar on the right side where all the waiters are grabbing dishes ready to be served and putting the finishing touch on drinks so I felt like I was sitting in the middle of a war zone where their stress was transferred to me. Perhaps that edge seat shouldn't be an option. The food itself is decent. Fish quality is good. The sushi is relatively small and each nigiri tasted okay. Prices are slightly above average compared to other sushi restaurants but it makes sense given their location.

Pretty nice sushi spot. This has a unique flavor that goes beyond your typical sushi spot. The drinks were all great, and they pack a punch if you know what to order. The meat skewers were all great as was the sushi. You're paying for an experience here. It doesn't remind me of Jpana if that makes sense, but in the end I still enjoyed the food and environment. Overall, thumbs up. Just be careful of the random shoppers watching you.

Lunch special sashimi + crab roll
    Carmen L.

I ordered their sashimi lunch special to-go, and I was quite disappointed by the thin cuts of sashimi and the poor appearance of the crab roll. To me, it seemed like they were skimping on the ingredients. This lunch order also did not include miso soup or salad like other traditional sushi restaurants. All this for $30+ is an absolutely rip-off. Ordering over the phone was easy and I paid when I picked up my order. While I did not dine in, I can see the ambiance is chic and would be a good place for date night.

I can't believe it took me this long to write a review for this spot;we have taken sushi rolls to go from here at least a dozen times since the last 2 years and we love it. Their white lotus, carpaccio, tuna belly, toro, Gensai roll. This spot is good, and their sauces with the sushi rolls or sashimi are good too, I especially love their truffle sauce. Can't comment mush on service since we never ate in the restaurant but by phone their are friendly. Will write another review in the future once we dine in as so far our experience has been to go

    Ylan T.

It's been a WHILE since we've had such a memorable dining experience. The staff, especially Dave, was exceptionally thoughtful and made the night for us! The recommendations were all spot on, Brussels sprout chips and crispy rice appetizers. Sushi was solid. First time, and we'll be back for sure.

The cutest vibe inside! I stopped by for happy hour after work, which we were told is bar seating only and the service was excellent throughout. We ordered sake, which was flavorful and tasted high quality. The sashimi and hand rolls were super fresh, the sliders were tender and melted in your mouth, and the brussels sprouts were crispy without being too oily. It's a bit on the pricier side for happy hour, but still a cute spot for an after-work drink especially if you're in the Stanford Shopping Center area.

    Phoebe L.

We came to check out their happy hour deals, and we loved how much of a selection there was! The handroll combo was a pretty good deal, and the quality of the fish was great. We loved the ambiance and will definitely be back to try out more!

    Do they have draft beers?

Yes, they absolutely have draft beers, and they are super tasty. I enjoyed the Pale Ale and the IPA.

What's the price for 2?? Is the omakasi better then ala carte

If you are asking about the izakaya feast (omakase) it is 78 pp or $156 per couple. Otherwise the menu is a la carte

Is Jason Shimizu still the head sushi chef here?

I saw him during my first visit in May, but not on Father's Day. He could've just been off that day.

Does the restaurant have speakers / loud music? If so, does this apply to the outside seating as well? (for medical reasons)

Ambiance music was playing in the background during our visit

Is this restaurant pet friendly if outdoor seating?

Yes, the outdoor patio is dog-friendly (I brought my dog).

What I ordered: Stanford roll: it had a nice mix of spicy tuna, crab, avocado, hamachi, with the sauces tying everything together really well Nigiri combo: 9 pieces of chef's choice fish and a lot of them were fish belly cuts which are fattyyyyy and melt in your mouth Hamachi lover: surprisingly my 2nd favorite (I normally don't like hamachi that much). It has hamachi, avocado and then hamachi on top, each bite was a big mouthful piece, so yummy Super salmon roll: this was probably my most favorite, especially the torched salmon and tobiko on top. Salmon wrapped around spicy salmon and cucumber. Overall, everything tasted clean and well balanced, nice rice ratio. Nothing felt off, I had no complaints at all. The service is nothing to write home about either. Their shop is small, and they staff only two waiters for the entire restaurant on a weekend afternoon. Those poor waiters were sprinting the entire time we were there. The food also took forever to make. Skewers had a 20-30-minute wait. The Sukiyaki hotpot entree took 40-50 minutes, and all they needed to do was slice the meat and arrange the veggies. We still had to cook the raw meat ourselves, mind you. I don't understand why it would take them 45 minutes to prep. Not being able to get a hold of the server to check on the status of our dish didn't help either, as they were busy zooming around because the restaurant was understaffed. Overall, there is a mismatch between the price they are charging and the overall experience we got. They either need to increase the portion or significantly increase the service to match the pricetag.

Everything we ordered was absolutely scrumptious and worth the price. Our favorites were the Crunchy Lobster Roll, packed with lobster salad, salmon, avocado & cucumber, tobiko, and topped with crunchy flakes and house sauce (a fresh roll) and the Wagyu & Sea Roll, which combined shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado, and seared Kobe beef (a cooked roll)! Super rich and satisfying!! The Scallop Butter Yaki was also delicious, with very tender and naturally sweet scallops and seared mushrooms in house-made butter sauce. We also ordered Oyster Shooter, a good combination of oyster, ikura, quail egg, ponzu sauce, and sake. Shot was not too strong but very well combined! The highlight of our meal was definitely Beef Tongue Skewer (a daily special). We're very impressed, as the skewer was incredibly tender, fresh, and melted in our mouths. We paired everything with a Sho Chiku Bai Nigori sake, which is soooo warm and comforting, complemented our meal nicely. Service was very quick, and the staff was very attentive throughout our visit. The pacing was just right, nothing felt rushed, and each course was thoughtfully decorated! I enjoyed every moment during the experience. We started with warm house sake to warm up, and luckily it paired really nicely with the meal and made everything feel extra cozy. Then for the courses, I had: - Starter: Kumiage Yuba with light house sauce and wasabi, I'm so impressed!!! At first I thought I was eating some fish liver because the texture was similar, but turn out it's tofu and they makes it excellent! A very nice starter - Appetizer: Squid tempura, pickled radish, mushroom & veggies, and tamago. I really like the tempura, crispy but not greasy, nice mix of textures - Sashimi plate: 3 pieces of bluefin tuna otoro, very fresh and buttery, just melts in my mouth! Love it - Oden bowl: I'm so in love with the broth, sweet, umami and comforting. It had braised pork belly, radish and konjac jelly, and all taste amazing, could not find any words to complain - Grilled fish: a very simple dish with not much seasoning. Fish was paired with some salty pickled plum and sweet potato. - Steamed tofu with abalone: I really like abalone texture, they made it very tender and easy to chew. Also not much seasoning so that you can feel the natural taste of the seafood, love that! - Hotate scallop with persimmon sauce: I don't like persimmon that much, but the scallops taste fresh and sweet - Rice bowl with pickles and miso soup: this is the 2nd final course, they have 2 options to upgrade from the white rice, uni ikura (+$16) & A5 wagyu (+$26) - we have 2 people so we order both to try a little bit of everything. Both worth the upgrade, but I prefer a5 wagyu - Matcha yokan with red beans and hot tea: the dessert was a bit too sweet for me, even though they served with hot tea to balance. But still, a great dish! Overall, really solid omakase spot on the Peninsula. I'd definitely come back if I had the chance!

Came here for a Mother's Day lunch with my family. It was very quiet, which my parents appreciated,…read moreand the overall atmosphere was minimalist, grounded, peaceful, and distinctly Japanese. The decor felt understated and calming, and both the host and server were very kind and welcoming. Service was definitely on the slower side -- we started the first course around 1pm and dessert wasn't served until about 2:40pm -- but I suppose that's part of the intentional, course-by-course dining experience. We ordered one of the lunch set menus. A few thoughts on the dishes: * House made tofu - Delicious. Light, delicate, and creamy, topped with wasabi and soy sauce. 9/10 * Appetizer assortment - A box with four small dishes (Nanohana steeped in dashi, simmered daikon radish, Tai marinated in vinaigrette, tamago). The tamago was less sweet than what you'd usually get at sushi restaurants (just okay for me, 6/10). The daikon was tasty (7.5/10), the fish had good flavor but a firmer texture than I prefer (7/10), and the vegetables were well-prepared (7.5/10). Everything was served room temperature. Overall, the flavors and sauces were very mild and subtle, in line with more traditional Japanese cooking. * The sashimi dish was fresh and delicious. 9/10 * Pork belly with vegetables - The pork belly was extremely tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were cooked nicely. The sauce was delicious. I almost wished it came with rice, but it was lightly seasoned and balanced as-is. 8/10 * Gindara marinated in miso - Lovely buttery, flaky texture. I've had similar miso black cod dishes elsewhere that were a bit more flavorful, but still very enjoyable. 8/10 * Chawanmushi - Very smooth, custardy texture with hints of citrus/yuzu, crab, and shiso. The crab texture was nice, though I didn't get a ton of crab flavor. * Octopus - A bit too chewy for my taste, though it paired nicely with the sweetness of the plum. I especially liked the nagaimo (yam) for both flavor and texture. 7.5/10 * Rice with kelp, wasabi cucumber, and simmered baby sardines - The kelp had a great texture and slightly tangy flavor. The wasabi cucumber was a bit too salty for me, even with the rice, but the baby sardines were delicious with just a hint of salt. 8/10 * Miso soup - Nice and light. 8/10 * Dessert (matcha yo-kan) - Green tea jelly with raspberries. Nice texture, though I personally prefer more pudding-like desserts. Not overly sweet, but I'm generally not a fan of beans in desserts. 7.5/10 One especially thoughtful touch: they served dessert to my mom on a special plate with additional Japanese candies and little origami pieces made by the staff. It felt very warm and personal. Overall, a good experience. They also offer à la carte options in addition to the set menus. The space feels intimate and would probably be best for smaller groups or quieter meals.

We made the mistake of not making one and were glad they took us in. We ordered... Appetizers Chicken karaag- crispy, juicy. Shiitake tempura- lightly battered and dipping was sauce was Chien fritter- skip or ask do no sauce if you can't handle wasabi Quattro mushroom tempura- a must get!!! Entree Katsu Don - the pork was tender and the egg was so delicious. Wagyu Curry Rice with Tonkatsu- we thought the pork in the katsu Don was tender, the pork here was even more tender!!! Wagyu Steak with Garlic Rice- this dish was why caught my eye on IG. It's very flavorful but definitely really oily. All these dishes reminded my of Gonzalo Barin Tonkatsu in Hawaii and the Wagyu Steak Garlic Rice reminded me of Japan street food at the night market

The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night but I was able to walk in at the bar. I got the ankimo pate from the seasonal menu and the wagyu steak and garlic rice. While waiting for my food I observed a sign of authenticity: a table of 8 Japanese businessmen, so I was pretty excited to get my food. I usually looooove ankimo and I didn't really think too much about how the mascarpone would be. I think it's too heavy/creamy and lost the liver-ness of ankimo which I really like. I understand a lot of people don't though so, different strokes for different people. Not a big fan of the mixture, and there was also water or something on the bread that made it soggy. However, the pickled onions and grapes were really good especially with the wagyu steak and garlic rice. At first glance the image of the wagyu steak is not that impressive, as it was in real life as well...BUT as I took my first bite I was taken back to the underground Kobe beef bowl hole in the wall restaurant. The beef is cut into really big pieces so in this picture it doesn't look like a lot but it was a good ratio. The rice is soft and fluffy and flavorful. Worth getting the dashi. I will definitely be back!!

The space is intimate, with only 8 counter seats, so you're served directly by chef Li. To my surprise, all of the seats were full on a Friday at lunch. I didn't want to drink too much at lunch, but they had a $29 sake flight of three 1.5 oz pours, which was just the right amount to pair with the sushi but still be able to go back to work after lunch! Pre sushi: 1. Pickled baby ginger: I love this stuff, and he was good about refilling it 2. Crab with Japanese citrus jelly and shiso: a generous amount of sweet, fresh crab 3. Ankimo: two pieces, served with wasabi 4. Signature octopus: massaged 1 hour and stewed 1 hour - very flavorful and tender 5. Steamed abalone: served over soba with abalone liver sauce 6. Seaweed shot 7. Chawanmushi with scallops and caviar Sushi: 1. Hokkaido scallop with yuzu and sea salt 2. Spanish mackerel 3. Akami: lean bluefin tuna 4. Kinmedai: golden eye snapper, torched 5. Isaki: 3 line grunt fish 6. Kelp cured black snapper, shiso leaf, yuzu 7. Chutoro 8. Saba: mackerel with kelp 9. Otoro: torched, topped with uni The scallop and kinmedai were the highlights for me. We also got one of the à la carte add ons: the hand chopped fatty tuna and uni hand roll. To finish: red miso soup At the end, you can watch the chef preparing the bento boxes, which was a good reminder for me to keep my eye out for the next available pickup. The fish was high quality, and the pieces were cut to the right size (I've been to way too many places with unappealingly large cuts). Each course was thoughtfully prepared, and pacing was consistent. For the quality and quantity of food, as well as the service and dining experience, this was a hot deal for $125 a person. We will definitely be coming back!

The presentation is also lovely. I also loved the pickled ginger (that they keep refilling for you). Overall would highly recommend!
