Strike 1, One of the other reviews I read mentioned that the waiter is also bussing tables, not sanitary or professional in my opinion. Strike 2, I ordered a house salad as a starter, they gave me a to go container with greens and a separate container for the dressing and bowl for me to put my own salad in, red flag... We searched for "sushi open Monday" because our regular places are close on Monday. I am happy we decided to come here. They are so caring, we made them aware of our Gluten allergy and they were so accommodating specially to our kid. And we know the fish is so fresh because our son's nose is like a thermometer of freshness. Otherwise we would only eat rice. The kiss of approval and the thank you after is a great indication for us. The sushi rolls were delicious! Highly recommend the Jalapeño sauce - special salmon roll!! So Yum!! A true hidden gem ! I was wrong when I saw the restaurant from afar, doubting that this looks a bnit underwhelming. But I WAS TOTALLY WRONG. the food is amazzzzzzing. We've been loving coming here with the kids for a cheap family sushi night. The basic rolls (i.e. California roll, spicy tuna, Philly) are very affordable and we usually add on a couple other deluxe rolls or sashimi for the grown ups. Stopped by this spot after passing it a few times over the last couple weeks, and I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. Started with the gyoza, which ended up being my favorite part of the meal. Perfectly crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor in every bite. Easily could've ordered a second plate. Next was the shrimp tempura hand roll. Super fresh with great flavor overall. The rolls were a little on the larger side, but honestly I didn't mind since the tempura still held its texture well. I also tried the unagi nigiri. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just didn't stand out compared to the other dishes. Probably the only item I wouldn't rush back for. Service was friendly and attentive, and since I came during lunch when it was pretty quiet, everything came out quickly. I got a baked dragon roll to go. It was good. I knew the baked rolls take at least 20 minutes to bake so I'm happy I preordered for pick up. The inside was nice with lots of folks eating lunch. Great casual spot for everyday Japanese! Quick service, good quality food, good prices. This place will certainly be a regular for us! Forgot to take photos of the Caterpillar and Salmon and Avocado rolls! Both were very good. Looking forward to returning when I'm not pregnant so I can try more raw fish rolls; saw other customers ordering various rolls which all looked very delicious. After being a regular at the Fremont location, I decided to give MJ Sushi in Menlo Park a try and it did not disappoint. Even arriving just an hour before closing, the service was fantastic. Our waitress was attentive and we never felt rushed to finish. We ordered the soft shell crab, the deluxe hand roll, hot sake, and a cold beer to wash it all down. Great quality fish at an incredibly reasonable price for the Palo Alto area! The MJ roll was fantastic - will get this the next time I go! The red dragon roll was also good but the shrimp tempura wasn't fried recently and so was a lil soggy when they served it to us. Only a two star review for one major reason: The small staff are both waiters *and* bussing dirty dishes from customer tables. In order for this to be sanitary, the employee would need to wash hands VERY often. Instead, some employees wear latex gloves so they don't have to wash their hands. This means that dirty dishes are collected and then fresh food and drinks are served, repeatedly, with the same latex gloves, which we viewed. Seems very unsanitary and reason for us to stop going. I know this requires a dedicated bus boy, which may not be feasible, but maybe a better solution exists. read more

However after I and other customers requested outdoor seats, the manager said they were not available, had us wait in the long line for indoor seats. The food is delicious. I don't like sushi (don't hate me), so I ordered the gyoza and the veggie tempura. The gyoza was outstanding. The sauce they make for it is scrumptious. The tempura was also delicious. It had sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini, and broccoli. My husband got the mango secret roll which had sweet potato tempura inside and he loved that too. I would definitely come back. There were three of us, and we wanted to sit outside, so the owner rearranged the tables for us. Really great service. Prices are good. Free first drink. I'm sad to give MJ Menlo Park only 3 stars because they used to be my go-to place for sushi takeout. Unfortunately, their overall quality has declined over time. In one of my recent orders, the usually delicious Mango Secret roll was ruined by mushy mango and undercooked sweet potato. Another time, they very confidently handed us the wrong order and only called to acknowledge their mistake 15 min later after we already took it home. As other reviews have mentioned, MJ's main issue seems to be that they're overwhelmed. Until they get it together, I'll have to get my sushi fix somewhere else. read more

I love this place! I'm so glad it opened in Menlo Park. We usually go to the one in Palo Alto but decided to check out this place that just opened in Menlo Park and it's just as good! The service is fast. They seated us pretty much when we walked in, took our order quickly, and we didn't have to wait too long for our appetizers or sushi to arrive. The downside is they don't open as late as the Palo Alto one. Also since they just opened there were free drinks, but don't know how long they will keep that up since that's just an opening thing (when we went in November). The food is great as usual. It's the same level of quality as the Palo Alto location which is great. They have relatively affordable sushi and the rolls are very flavorful. The inside is nice. It has pretty standard Japanese decorations. It is small like the Palo Alto one, but still has plenty of tables to seat everyone. I also like how it's located next to Safeway. It's very convenient to get dinner and then also get your grocery shopping in as well. The parking was also not a problem since it's located in the same plaza as Safeway. First time at an MJ Sushi! We loved the fancy sushi spot that was here before, but it was a bit high end for everyday "weekday dinner with the kids," and they never seemed fully booked when we visited. MJ Sushi seems like it might be a better fit for the niche here - when we came on a Wednesday, the place was packed, mostly with families, so it seems like the spot is filling a need in the local neighborhood. As others have mentioned, the draw here is value: there is a solid selection of common sushi items plus a good selection of appetizers (karaage, takoyaki, etc) priced lower than most spots in the surrounding area. Given this, I was expecting the sushi to be a little "cheaper" tasting - another Yelper describing expecting the sushi version of Panda Express - but like others, we were pleasantly surprised that the items here were very solid - generous ratio of fish to rice, well executed rolls, fish quality good, not too sweet/saucy as cheap sushi can sometimes be. This isn't aiming to be a place that competes with the best local sushi spots (think Tomi Sushi) but it is an excellent example of moderately priced sushi for everyday family dining out. Enjoyed my Dragon Roll and agadashi tofu, kiddo loved the gyoza and avocado maki, and my husband's chirashi bowl looked satisfying. The person sitting next to us got the deluxe chirashi bowl, which looks quite fancy for the price - we've paid twice as much for similar looking deluxe chirashi bowls - so we will need to give that item a taste test next time. Nice to have a local sushi place. Pro: - Friendly staff - Local, inexpensive - Some dishes like hand rolls very good - Nice touch to offer a free drink (don't know if this is a grand opening offer). Con: - Giving away cases of single use plastic water instead of water glasses bottles is not sustainable. Stacking them in the restaurant by the tables not great either. Cheapens the ambiance and for a sustainability guy, almost a deal breaker. - Deep fry process uses way too much batter. Takes away from the ingredients. - Gyoza should be fried, not deep-fried - Unagi ( and many other items on the menu) come drizzled in 'unagi sauce', whatever that is. It's become our new regular spot because we get the same amount of sushi as we get other places but for less money. The sushi tastes fresh and they have a good variety. They had a 45 min pickup wait on a Sunday night, so we got our order from the Menlo Park location. - Ikura nigiri - Deluxe hand roll: with uni, otoro, ikura, fresh wasabi - not a bad deal! - Fireworks roll: I'm not usually a roll person, but this was surprisingly good with spicy tuna, seared albacore, not too much rice. Note: I got it without house special sauce - Spider roll: good quality soft shell crab - Chirashi: standard I appreciate that their rolls didn't have an excessive amount of rice. There was a large list of inventive sushi rolls on the menu but we decided to order other things. The edamame appetizer came as a huge portion, but could have done with a sprinkling of salt and less time in the steamer. The takoyaki was weird- deep fried instead of cooked on a cast iron grill, and the topping was far too sweet. The sashimi was astonishing - the cuts were far too thick and chunky. When they are sliced this way, the fish has a metallic flavor, like blood. We appreciated the generosity of the sashimi portions but would have preferred less, and had the fish sliced properly. read more
