I have passed by this place many times. While at the Palo Alto street fair today I finally went inside. There were many tables open but all were taken when I left. I got the lunch Bento with two choices for $17*95 I got the salmon shioyaki and tempura. The salmon was a good size and moist on the inside with a good char on the outside. The tempura was very good and crunchy. It also came with miso soup, salad with a great dressing and 4 pieces of California Roll.,it was a lot of food. I could not finish it all and this fatty can eat! The food was delicious and the service was very friendly. I will definitely eat there again the next time I'm in downtown Palo Alto. I ordered the lunch combo which was surprisingly priced higher given the limited list of options i had AND the pricing of regular menus. still went with it. Bad idea. The dragon roll tasted like it was made a while ago and left at the window. I believe they just make them in batches for lunch combo. It did not taste fresh (like most of my friends' rolls). The tempura inside was soggy and overall a complete let down. the avocado/cucumber roll tasted bland and sad. no salt. the California roll was okay. The portion size was also smaller compared to individual orders. Overall not worth the ~29 dollars for the lunch combo. I've had better sushi at Safeway near me. Service was not great but alright. Found a great sushi spot in downtown PA. I don't know how long they have been opened but I'm glad I learned about them. On a beautiful spring day I was craving sushi, but didn't want to break the bank. Araki Sushi was just what I was looking for. A buddy and I walked in and were sat immediately. For a Saturday, it was quite fortuitous. I was famished and was glad there wasn't a wait to be sat. We started out with gyoza--not pot stickers, by the way--and I ordered the 3 rolls combination. Love the lunch set menu, which includes rolls, bento boxes of sashimi, tempura and other offerings and portions are very generous. Service, however, wasn't very friendly and there was low to no air conditioning on a very hot day, which wasn't very comfortable. The quality of the fish was fresh and the cuts were thick. The cuts were a bit inconsistent, some larger than others, but they were fresh. The miso soup was well balanced in flavor and was not salty. There were plenty of seaweed and pieces of tofu, which was great. The salad was fresh and not wilted. I had a bite of my friend's teriyaki chicken and liked the flavor. We both enjoyed our green tea ice cream, which had a nice matcha flavor and was creamy in texture. The restaurant was very accommodating, we were there from 7pm to 10:30pm and they did not kick us out! Our server refilled my hot green tea a few times, always with a smile. After dinner, we took a stroll along University Avenue, which was beautifully lit. The restaurant is located along this busy and well-lit strip that had a really nice atmosphere for an evening walk after dinner. The tonkatsu was just a little dry - it's pretty typical of what you get at many Japanese restaurants - probably not to risk undercooking or because the cutlet is quite thin and therefore hard to avoid overcooking. But the best tonkatsu is tender and juicy. Other items also fairly typical. Wouldn't hesitate to come here again, but also wouldn't necessarily seek it out because there wasn't really anything to make it stand out from other similar places.
