It was our first time in Kyoto Restaurant. We decided to explore other sushi restaurants, while the owners of our favorite spot were on vacation. My husband ordered a Philadelphia roll and a New York roll. Simple rolls that tasted ok. I tried the Rohnert Park roll and the Annie Special roll. Omg, it was bad. The rolls were extremely dry and lacked flavor. Basically bland, dry rolls and nothing else. If you stick to simple rolls, they are more than likely going to taste ok, because it's hard to mess up something simple. But do not order anything "complicated", it's not going to taste good. Another complaint was cleanliness. There were ants on the table, little flies flying around, and the utensils were not clean. The table was very sticky, I couldn't even put my hands on it. Overall, this place really needs to improve its cleaning standards. The service was mediocre as well. Not coming back. read more

I really wanted to love this place. I'm all for supporting small businesses, but unfortunately, it missed the mark for our entire party of four. The service was friendly, but everything else fell flat. One friend even had something floating in her water (we just asked for a new cup, no big deal), but the food itself was the real disappointment. What was NOT okay was the STICKER SHOCK associated with the bill. We got a bento box with chicken katsu and shrimp/broccoli tempura, a dragon roll and Wendy roll. Food was great, love how simple the rolls are and they are not masked with loads of sauces on top. This place is a local establishment well known for its consistent quality food and friendly service. My late mom loved eating here and we often got take out during the pandemic. I met a friend for lunch and Annie, the sweet owner, was there to give us a very warm welcome. We were seated to the right of the front door on a raised area which was a cozy place to be since a larger crowd was coming in shortly and it allowed us a quiet place to relax and catch up. We ordered the salmon teriyaki plate and unagi (eel) donburi. We also had two sushi rolls which were a chef's choice and they were absolutely amazing. I don't think these are on the menu but each piece came with a tiny thinly sliced piece of lemon on top. The lemon added a refreshing and new taste sensation for me. We each received a bowl of miso soup before our entree. Our lunches were beautiful and delicious and I enjoyed the fresh green salad and rice that accompanied my meal. I was happy to see that the tables are set far apart from each other so you feel comfortable and safe. They do a fabulous job of catering too as I have enjoyed several of their catered meals. Locally owned favorite in Rohnert Park! Service is always friendly and attentive. Their tempura and sauce is honestly one of my favorite's not only in Sonoma county, but in the bay area. Lunch specials do not disappoint in portion or pricing. The only down fall I would say is that the food does take some time to come out, but the taste and freshness makes up for it. I first discovered this place about a dozen years or so ago and I really enjoyed it. Since then I moved away for about a decade and I could not remember the name of this restaurant. I moved back here about a year ago and I've been trying to figure out where to find this place again. I honestly wasn't sure if I had the right place until I got there. It is unfortunate that they choose not to serve people indoors now that it's permitted, especially since they don't have any outdoor dining available either. However this sushi is as good as I remember it. I especially like the crispy deep fried tempura in the Rohnert Park roll. Our take out came in a nice plastic platter and the miso soup came carefully wrapped in an extra layer of plastic wrap. They did forget to include wasabi, but we happened to have some anyway. After all these years I never forgot how much I liked the sushi here and I'm very happy to have made the effort to find this place again. read more

I'm in awe! My husband and I came here (apparently his first time) for this first time in YEARS and Annie looks me dead in the eyes and says "good to see you" with a big smile under her mask. I'm pretty sure it's been close to 5-6 years since I've been here and the last time I was a regular was when I was still in high school 11+ years ago. This place has changed a lot over the years, but it will always be one of my favorite Japanese restaurants to go to in Rohnert Park. We used to have to wait for a table, but now it seems the pandemic has made it less desirable for dine-in (or maybe it was like that pre-pandemic too, I'm not sure). No wait, still great tasting food, and A+ customer service. The waitress was very polite and sat us right away. Both my grandmother and I were excited to try to food once looking at the menus. They have some very reasonably priced lunch specials. We ordered a sunomono salad that came with seaweed salad on top and some small pieces of shrimp, the warm edamame, and for lunch each got the Chirashi lunch special. It came with 4 different types of raw fish, a shrimp, octopus, 2 pieces of tamago and crab spread over a bed of rice. The food more than made up for the somewhat dated inside. I am truly struggling to understand the overall stars this place has. We paid over $50 for teriyaki chicken combo and a sushi and nigiri combo. The teriyaki sauce tasted like it was from a jar and it wasn't a very big portion. My sushi clearly wasn't fresh and one piece was so smelly I had to stop eating it. A few weeks ago, I was in the area for work meetings. I wanted Japanese food but I'm not a big fan of sushi or sashimi. I did a google search and decided to go to Kyoto based on their menu options. I immediately knew I made the right choice when I saw sukiyaki on the menu. I also ordered the hamachi kama & goyza. The food was delicious authentic Japanese cuisine. I've traveled to Japan numerous times and the food was very reminiscent of those trips. The service was also amazing. I noticed that every customer (dine in/take out) that came in seemed to be regulars. They knew the staff by their first name. It can get crowded in here but that just shows how much people like it! And Annie seems to know everyone who walks in the door. There are so many things that went wrong. There is a minimum $6.75 (I could be off by a few cents) order per person. I do not think that a restaurant should dictate how much you spend when you dine. Especially, if you are paying by cash, so there is no credit card fee. The bowl that my miso soup came in had a wad of what appeared to be gum, stuck to the lower side of it. Unfortunately, I did not notice this until I had already consumed the soup. However, the soup tasted fine. I ordered the cucumber seaweed salad and it arrived with eel and octopus on it. When I mentioned this to the server, she acted as though I was supposed to know that that was the way it was prepared. Silly me for thinking that the way the menu described the dish was correct. Nonetheless, she took it back and brought me another without the meat on it. I had to request lemons for my water twice before I actually got them. One of my co-workers had foreign objects in her green tea and had to return it as well. Lastly, when the server spilled soup on the table while trying to serve the bowls, she wasn't apologetic, didn't clean up the mess and some of it spilled on a co-worker's cellphone. I am upset that I got suckered into going to this place. I could have spent my money elsewhere and left satisfied. This place is dirty unsanitary and unappealing. read more

The food here is ok. The Annie roll was delicious and the avocado roll and miso soup was pretty standard. I got a bento box that also came with a salad made of iceberg lettuce and miso ginger dressing. The vegetable tempura was mostly potatoes and should have been labeled french fries :/ The kicker was the service...which was terrible! At one point the chef came out to bring food to another table and stopped to say hello to us before heading back into the kitchen. That was the best service we got all night. The two waitresses that were actually serving us, couldn't be bothered. Maybe they were brand new? The place was not busy, there were 3 tables total. If we wanted anything there was a lot of waiting even though we could always see at least one of the servers was free (mainly because she sat at the front texting on her cell phone).
