My Dad lives in Sonoma so we have frequented that location. After a long drive back from the coast through the mountains we decided to get Japanese food. It has a different vibe from Sonoma, not sure I can pinpoint how, possible feels more local to me. Both are great though. The staff here is super friendly. I think the friendliest of the two locations. We shared a Shige Panic roll which was amazing. Its basically a chef's choice type roll. Then I had chicken teriyaki which I really enjoyed. Love, love, LOVE this spot in Downtown Cotati. Food is always delicious and fresh, and the prices seem reasonable for outstanding Japanese food (especially in this area). Deducted one star for the unfortunate reality that they are sometimes very understaffed, which can result in long wait times, servers rushing around and the occasionally sticky table. All being said, try to sit on their small patio out back which is adorably decorated with vintage Japanese movie posters and memorabilia. Cute spot in downtown Cotati. The service was very good and the food came out quickly. The seaweed salad was good. The poke salad was too much lettuce and felt like it's fluffed up for no reason. The pieces of tuna were good. The sushi rolls were a blend of flavors. Really like the crazy ninja and Ken Chan. The salmon creek was not my thing but my partner enjoyed it. Parking is free at street just in front of the building. We visited close to their closing time but we were still taken in. I grew up in the East Bay and this spot is hands down the best Sushi in Sonoma County. The fish is fresh, the rice is flavorful and well cooked and they actually make legit takoyaki and don't skimp on the ingredients. Super friendly Japanese family run spot that I hope never leaves! I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but every time I went there it was closed. I guess I was going right in between lunch and dinner. I am glad today it was open at the time that I was downtown. The food was very good. I had their chicken Katsu bento box and gyozo. my friend had their tempura and California rolls. Shige is our favorite sushi spot in all of Petaluma/Cotati (and beyond). The food is so fresh and light, and the gyozas are homemade and out-of-this-world good. I recommend the Trevor roll, it has all of my favorite components including crab, spicy tuna and shrimp temp. We love sitting on their wooden patio adorned with funky retro Japanese posters and decor. Super dog-friendly, too! Very nice family owned business, please support them. read more

There could be some improvements to how they seat customers and then remember they sat them lol. We sat at the bar and after 10 minutes I flagged someone down. After that things were fine. I've been to hundreds of Japanese restaurants. In LA. In NYC. In Tokyo. In Kyoto. The local efforts in Sonoma County are often not great. But SHIGE IS GREAT. It's run by actual Japanese people who know what the correct flavors and qualities are in Japanese food. It's not particularly fancy, and the servers are young people who may not know the nuances of sake or etc. But that's kind of irrelevant. The food is the best sushi I've had North of San Francisco, and at a better price and less pretentious. I put in on-par with Ebisu (SF) or Hamano (Noe Valley) but I actually like Shige better than either. They even make things like TakoYaki you don't seen on many menus. read more

I used to go to Shige all the time when I was in college, and it was always my favorite place for sushi. My boyfriend and I would stop by every weekend when he came to visit, and it never disappointed. We recently stayed in Rohnert Park for a weekend and decided to stop by again and it was just as amazing as I remembered! The sushi is still fresh, delicious, and well-priced. We started going to Sushi Shige in Cotati when Shige first opened. We loved it. It became our go-to sushi place for quite a few years. Then, we began to notice Shige being distracted while preparing the sushi (we always sat at the bar). His heart seemed to be elsewhere. Not long after that, he opened up a new location in Sonoma (temporarily closing Cotati). We went there early-on. The place was a jumble of disorganization. Shige was somewhere in the back, not present in the front room at all. The meal was mediocre. We did not return until recently, when we went back to the Cotati location. All I can say is, no one is preparing the sushi at the sushi bar, and my guess is, no one is preparing the sushi on the premises at all. Or, perhaps they come in early and make up a bunch. I really don't know. However, what I do know is that the sushi was not fresh, it was dry, and absent twas hat fresh sushi-glisten. It had to have sat out for quite some time before being served. There was little flavor, other than the wasabi/soy sauce we added. Shige Sushi Cotati is now a rote operation. Move-em-in, move-em-out. Very disappointing. read more

Best sushi in Sonoma County! I'm obsessed with this place. I'd only gotten takeout before, which was excellent, and last night finally made it in person. We sat on their lovely heated patio and had the best food and service! My friend suggested starting with the Agedashi tofu and now I need to get it every time. It's crispy, silky, and flavorful. We also ordered their terrific miso soup, perfect gyoza, and a ton of creative, delicious rolls with the perfect balance of crispiness, creaminess, and super fresh fish. It started on the golf course when I told my buddy if he sank his 18-foot putt I would buy dinner for both of us and our girls. He hit it dead on. We ordered plenty of food for everyone including an excellent bottle of Saki to go. Of course it was all to go because of the pandemic. The food was very tasty. Dragon rolls, saki nigiri, redwood roll, Etc Etc. The staff was very friendly and the food was prepared fresh as we waited. It was a take-home hit with all four of us.
