I'd heard about this place before, but my coworkers warned me that the service isn't great if you don't look Asian. With that in mind, I decided to try it anyway--and unfortunately, my experience matched what they said. The food itself was pretty solid, about an 8/10. However, the side orders were overpriced and, strangely, not even listed with prices on the menu. The service was where things really fell apart. Our server (a Korean gentleman) slid the side dishes onto the table without a word, never checked in to see if we needed anything, and seemed much more attentive to the other Asian family dining near us. Meanwhile, we had to repeatedly ask for basics like a knife, refills of water, and even the check. Overall, while the food was decent, the lack of hospitality and uneven service left a bad impression. On the road so did take out for lunch. Luckily someone was leaving right in front so I got the space. Never been lunch time but was pretty crowded. Maybe about 4 small groups. I called in the order - meat jun plate for my co-worker and meat jun/saba plate for myself. Pet peeve is when fried food plates get tied up in a plastic bag. Everything gets soggy, and the paper plate was soggy too...and it doesn't keep the food hot. I opened it up to release the warm air. Meat jun is tasty. Batter lighter than the last time I had it so great improvement. Kim Chee tasty. Mac Salad has no taste...need to ask them to not put it next time. Saba overcooked - probably steamed itself in the enclosed baggy. Choke rice. Enough food for 2 meals. Overall pretty good. Best Korean food? I'll start with the positive, of which there are many. First of all, the fish is so fresh and buttery. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we got in our $30 sashimi plate. My boyfriend and I also shared a meat jun and poke combo. It was my first time trying meat jun and it reminded me of Taiwanese egg crepes. Yummy. I have zero complaints about the food. Unfortunately, the process to get the food was a bit cumbersome. Parking is difficult. Getting a table is difficult. Service is whatever. I highly recommend planning ahead as much as you can to mitigate these issues. For example, call ahead for a reservation and get dropped off instead of driving. The food is worth it. read more

Back in the day, my friends & I would come here for the flavored Soju and Sashimi platter, tho I'm not the biggest raw fish fan, so I'd barter slices of my shared Sashimi for more Mandoo! Soju and Asian beer galore if wanting that K-pop gangsta vibe going on. I've been coming here on and off for years, as my Auntie lives down the block. Back then Psy was the guy, tho I like the upgraded looks of BLACKPINK! No dis' to Psy, but that Meat Jun bod tho! On my past visits I've had the Garlic Ahi Belly, Kalbi, BBQ Korean Chicken, Meat Jun, Sashimi. On my latest visit I decided on the Meat Jun and Mandoo Combo which comes with Kimchi, Mac Salad, and Rice. Since I was dining solo I passed on the amazing Soju, since they only serve it in carafe and tbh I'm not feeling the regular K who pees behind dumpster. Meat Jun it is! Hunnay! The ladies that work here have always been nice to me. Hundred perfect Korean vibes so kinda cray and straight forward KO! Delicious foods and if I squint just so I kinda get Lisa, Jisoo, Jennie, & ROSÉ! RIP Kyong Suk Cha. I was utterly shocked when the waiter told me Kyung passed away. In disbelief I did a Google search and found her obituary post. It was favorite nephew by default's birthday and he specifically chose Kyung's after so many memorable meals here. Good food and warm hospitality from Kyung herself. I knew something was different when I arrived the other night. First, I noticed the restaurant parking were not tandem stalls but single. It was nice that the restaurant was almost full when I walked in shortly before 6pm. I made reservations so I had a table. The background music was more contemporary which caught me off guard. The flat screen TV usually played sporting events. The vibe was different from previous outings. When ordering, our waiter repeatedly reminded me the prices of the sushi platter and spicy ahi. I don't question the prices when eating here. Nor, did Kyung herself nor her staff repeatedly inform me of pricing. It was odd, borderline rude and irritating to be told "Medium platter is $50. Small platter is $30. Full pound of spicy ahi is $25." And our waiter kept on repeating this. I do understand the importance of confirmation but it was excessive. We then ordered the grilled mackerel (saba) and was questioned if one was enough. I'm not sure if he was trying to upsell when he suggested we get two. At this time I bluntly asked if the restaurant was under new management and was advised Kyung's daughter has taken over. Kyung passed away in June 2022. THE VERDICT Overall the food was good but it was different. Sashimi slices were smaller and not as thick. The seafood pancake was crispy but it shrunk in size and the chunks of seafood were not as generous as before. Kyung used to boast chopped tiger shrimp and squid chunks. Not noticeable tonight. The meat jun was heavy on the batter and clearly disappointing. The saba was fishy in a disturbing way. On a positive note, the deep fried gizzards and spicy squid with somen noodles were tasty. We also ordered the seasoned tripe for the first time and it was not bad but perhaps too much shredded cabbage underneath it to make the dish seem substantial. Service was hot and cold. Our main server really stood out as he's clearly customer service oriented. The other waiter seemed occupied with his cell phone. We tried to flag him again as he clearly forgot our banchan refill and we wanted more water. This staff also proceeded to take away some dishes when we still had food on it. This oddly happened twice. Overall, mixed feelings while dining here tonight. Those many memories of great hospitality from Kyung are cherished. I patronized Kyung's doing takeout during early stages of COVID to support her. Kyung really appreciated my visits. Kyung's presence was clearly missing which made the dinner so-so. I'll have to think twice before coming back here again. It just wasn't the same. read more

Hole in the wall, with great food. We ended up going three times in our 7 days in Waikiki. The Spicy tuna is absolutely on of the best dishes in all of Hawaii, and is borderline addictive. I've always heard good things about this place. One day after a hike, my cousin and I ordered take-out and ate in the car(this was during the pandemic). We ordered a meat jun plate with mama's poke special and salmon sashimi. I fell in love. Everything was so good, the meat jun was sweet enough, didn't have to dip it in the sauce. Poke was delicious and the sashimi was fresh and didn't have any of the fishy taste. It was a great post-hike meal. Since then, whenever I crave meat jun, the boyfriend and I would order takeout from here. When we did dine-in, we got to try their Kalbi and other dishes that I forgot what it was lol. Their sashimi is always a good deal. It never disappoints. They also have drinks to enjoy with your meal. I got to some of their soju's and my favorite would be the yogurt. We got to try the strawberry flavor but it wasn't as great because it was like a smoothie-like consistency. I grabbed takeout the other night. And the BBQ chicken is usually pretty good but this time it was so tough I almost couldn't even bite through it. Im guessing the chicken was way too frozen or it wasn't thawed properly before cooking. I'm only posting a review because the time I got takeout just before this one, we had the same issue but with the meatjun, the meat was very tough I couldn't even eat half of the pieces without removing parts of it out of my mouth because I couldn't chew it let alone swallow it. I really hope they can resolve these issues. First time here & my cousin & his girlfriend recommended us to come here. We took my brother here straight from the airport from San Francisco. PARKING: Parking here is kind of tough. I've driven past Kyung's so many times but never stopped in and never knew what I was missing. My bf and I were able to walk in without a reservation on a Friday night around 6pm. The food quality, portions, and service were so good!!! The ahi quality of the poke was unbelievable, and the pork soondubu was bigger than most restaurants give, and packed with pork and tofu. I want to bring my parents here because I had such a good experience. The only challenge of our visit was finding parking, but I think circling the block a few times was well worth it! I dream of the spicy tuna seaweed wrap... A homey place with friendly fast service, hands down the best spicy tuna I had on my last trip there! The portion is so generous, so wish it came with more seaweed though. Seafood Korean pancake was also big, and so crispy and delicious! Only thing could have made this better is more seafood in the batter. Mochi fried chicken sounded promising but did not impress as the other dishes. 3.5 rounded up to 4... I've been to Kyung's a couple of times. My first experience was brilliant! Amazing cuts of Sashimi; delicious, fresh and tasty. I recall the cuts of fish being generous and juicy, also a great value as well. My second experience was a bit mixed. The food was still good, but the service wasn't... We came on a Sunday evening for dinner. We called ahead and inquired if they still had the Mama Special Poke available and if it was busy. When we got there the lady helping us mentioned they were almost full, but a table just left and the staff would need about 10 minutes to clean up and reset the table. 10 minutes passed by and nobody came to get us. We had to peak in and get someones attention, they clearly forgot about us! Kyung's didn't seem that busy either. I asked her for additional napkins...she forgot. We never got them...had to flag someone down for more water as well. They even forgot one of our items; the Sashimi salad. Once again we had to flag down someone...common theme of the evening. If the food wasn't good, I'd give Kyung's two stars or less... The reason for the high ratings: ~ Ban Chan - 3.5/5 I wouldn't call this Ban Chan...at least not in the traditional Korean sense. However, we are in HI...which would make this some sort of fusion representation. Glad we had it as an added bonus, as we weren't expecting anything. A snack to warm up your appetite. ~ Garlic Ahi Belly - 5/5 Pan-Fried Tuna Belly with Garlic. Brilliant! Delicious chunks of Ahi Belly cooked in Garlic. This was amazing! ~ Mama Special Poke - 4/5 Kyung's Poke special made in house. While it was tasty, I didn't think it was outstanding or very unique. Nothing stood out about it, just a good fresh bowl Poke. ~ Sashimi Salad - 3/5 I wouldn't call this a salad by any means. It's literally a bunch of Sashimi on some shredded cabbage and diced lettuce and topped it off with tobiko. No effort, no specific dressing or toppings...nothing salad like. I've been wanting to check this restaurant out for yeeeears. I have no idea why I never really went besides the fact the food is a lot pricier compared to other Korean restaurants (I guess that's a big indicator LOL) but alas, I finally made my way there! It's located in the corner of S King St, next to Golden Pork Tonkotsu. There's a 3-4 stall park area in the back of the restaurant through the residential neighborhood. VERY TINY. But there is paid street parking (free after 6pm) around. My group (6) and I (total 7) ordered family style and shared everything. We got the Sashimi Platter (M), Spicy Ahi Poke, and combo plates of meat jun & gyoza and kalbi & BBQ chicken. The sashimi and poke were suuuper fresh. The sashimi consisted of salmon, ahi, and hamachi, and their cuts were big! The poke was really good too! Didn't really have a spice but the flavor of it was delicious! Not too fishy without the mayo either. The combo plates were all super packed with proteins, rice, mac salad, and kimchi. Also really good! We all definitely could not stop eating. The amount of food we ordered was enough for the seven of us. Surprisingly LOL. Doesn't sound like there was much food but there was! Great place to eat and drink! Tried this place once because my boyfriend recommended it. We had the kim chee fried rice, kim chee chige, masago poke, and kalbi. Everything we ate was very delicious. Service wise, we received our food pretty quickly. The workers were very nice too. Ambiance wise, the restaurant gives korean bar vibes and is pretty small, so I would recommend going early or calling ahead to check if tables are available. Here's the rundown: - Kalbi beef: some of the best kalbi I've ever had! The meat jun was good--fairly typical of Korean places here in Hawaii. Portion was decent. The poke pricing is similar to other places at home; market price is about $25/lb. The food, atmosphere, and service here is just too good!!! Dinning here gives off a cozy pub/bar type of ambience where the table are close to each other, but you can be as loud as you want and it doesn't bother anyone. Definitely a great place to have a late night dinner with your rowdy friends and family. It was very comfortable and casual, and the servers here felt just like family. Though the restaurant offer alcohol, it's still a very family-friendly place with great choices of food and very genuine customer service. During my first visit here with my cousins, one of the servers gave us a free drink because we didn't order any while our food would go well with that drink. How thoughtful! On my second visit, I brought my family here for their first time and another server gave us a small plate of Mama's Special Poke to try for free! Again, how awesome is that?! I'm the type of Asian that love exotic food and many different styles of bar food, so I'm very glad to have found this place!! Not many places serves good gizzards or even gizzards at all, but Kyung's is one of them! The Meat Jun here is a MUST HAVE!!! You've never had a fulfilling meat jun until you've eaten it here. Oh my gosh the food at this place is so good! I'm failing at gatekeeping this restaurant but we were so happy with the food and our waitress was super nice. I could see the cooks in the kitchen making our food. That's the kind of home cooking I want to see when I eat legit Korean food. Finding parking is a challenge but if that deters you then good more spaces for me to park. The outside of the restaurant does not speak for the wholesome goodness waiting for you. So what?
