L&L is one of my favorite spots for Hawaiian bbq, this is the first time I've been to one in Santa Barbara but it's just as good as the one in Ventura! I went around 12 PM on a Wednesday, the place was clean and organized. There were a few people but the line wasn't long. I ordered a chicken katsu meal, an order of spam musubi, and a drink. Rod was the guy who took my order, very chill dude. He told me about their Wednesday special on spam musubi, it's 2 for $7. I waited around 10 minutes but it was sooo worth it. The spam musubi was nice and warm, the rice was soft and the sauce inside was good too. They're very generous when it comes to portion sizes, there was so much chicken! The mac could use a bit more seasoning, it was creamy but tasted more like mayo. Other than that, everything was pretty good. I recommend coming here and getting yourself a meal, you won't regret it! This location was clean with a lot of seating, and service was super quick! Both of us got a combo plate, which features 2 choices of protein and 3 sides. Classic side combo is 2 rice and a mac salad. You can get fries or salad on the side too, though. Both of us got chicken katsu, and I choice short ribs as my second protein (my boyfriend got bbq beef!). The katsu here can never disappoint. So yummy and crispy, and the sauce it comes with is fantastic. Their short ribs were cooked well, and super tender! For about $15, you get a huge plate that is sure to fill your appetite! Woman behind the register seemed somewhat annoyed that we were there but whatever; transaction completed... we take a seat. Very colorful and clean inside... my excitement for the katsu is building... then immediately deflated. I see the cashier sit down with her food at the table next to ours. She's eating, drinking, using her phone. Order is up for a to-go customer... she gets up and doesn't even wash or sanitize her hands, proceeds to pack his food. Once that is done, she returns to her food only to do this AGAIN for the next customer! Then, she does it again with our food. DID NOT WASH OR SANITIZE HER HANDS A SINGLE TIME!!! I was so disgusted by this point, I lost my appetite and I was just mad. I worked in the food industry for years and I know that sometimes there is no break relief (but if this is the case, management should be ashamed because this is unacceptable). However, to not wash your hands a single time after eating, drinking, touching your dirty phone screen then touching customer food is DISGUSTING! This employee was old enough to know better and passed the food handlers certification, I assume! That had me wondering "does this employee even wash their hands after using the restroom? Prices have really shot up. Meals were $16.99! I paid $8.99 for a tiny, bland burger that should be on a dollar menu. It did come with fries though and they weren't too bad. It took nearly 20 minutes to get that burger and there was only one customer ahead of me. Musubi can be quite a contentious choice (left or right of the spectrum, towards that blushing pink meat), especially if you really enjoy perfectly lightly crisp, delicious spam sandwiched in rice and wrapped in seaweed. I've been coming to L&L for years, but it had been about a year since my last visit because their prices are so high now. I tried it again tonight, for old time's sake, but this will be my last visit The quality at L&L was never all that high, they're not using the best cuts of anything to make your plate lunch, but it was always authentic and reminded me of when I lived in Hawaii. I feel like the quality has slowly gotten worse over the years, along with the flavor. My meal tonight was dry and overcooked, the flavor was off, and maybe it's just my imagination, but I think the size of the plate lunch box has shrunk. At the same time, the prices have jumped quite a bit. The one plate lunch I got tonight was around $20 for low-quality food, prepared poorly. If this trend continues, I can't imagine they'll be in business for too much longer. read more

I've eaten here before, but not since the lockdowns. The restaurant itself is bright and clean, and the staff is very friendly. The food is authentic Hawaiian barbecue as I know it, having been an island tourist a few times, and the portions are large. It's a little on the pricey side, I paid $25 for my meal of two items and a small drink: Chicken Katsu Saimin soup, and Loco Moco Mini. Both were excellent, and the soup in particular was flavorful and a huge portion: nearly a quart! Not sure why this doesn't have a better overall review, but I enjoyed it. My friend and I split our meats up, but we had chicken katsu and BBQ chicken mini lunch plates. Both were very flavorful, the BBQ chicken more so; it wasn't heavily salty, which I appreciated. The chicken katsu was very good as well, especially crunchy. It wasn't as flavorful as the BBQ, but it came with katsu sauce which enhanced the flavor without being too sweet. The rice was sticky, and the macaroni side accompanied both meats well. The price point it a tad higher than expected, but I attributed it to them having a wide selection of meats. The service was quick. The breaded shrimp and fish were good. The beef was tough and luke warm. The food was prepared fast. The restroom needs help. Lots of graffiti and is worthy of a deep cleaning. Fast food service. I usually get a combination BBQ plate, which I've never had issues with, but recently I decided to get a chicken katsu saimin. For its price, it was really good! It was very comforting in the cold weather, and I'm not sure how big the katsus are but the chicken pieces seemed ENDLESS. It was not too salty either. Also we got an order of their musubi deal because we were too lazy to make our own SPAM at home. I've never had any problems with my experience here. I can't speak for rest of menu but I do like the dishes above, very much. And hello? I would have to say my favorite was definitely the Chicken Katsu and it's yummy Katsu sauce. I was a little disappointed in the macaroni salad. I felt like it really didn't have any taste. The rice was soft and sticky but it paired great. I will definitely have to say that I fell in love with their Hawaiian Sun juice drinks! I was able to try the Mango Orange and Passion Orange. Thank goodness for L&L, the one true Polynesian spot in the entire SB area! This little restaurant tucked away in the Albertsons center near Costco has many delicious options, the friendly vibe that should be present in a Hawaiian restaurant, and exquisitely friendly service. I have been here dozens of times, including ordering their trays of food for parties on multiple occasions, and I can say that their food has never let me down. My favorite dish is the Kalua pork plate, which comes with succulent pork, and large scoops of mac salad and rice. If your a true Santa Barbarian, throw it all in a tortilla and send me the thank you card later. The chicken Katsu is also delectable and comes with the best Katsu sauce in the nation, tastier than King's Hawaiian or any local place on the islands. The barbecue chicken and musubi are also outstanding. You'll want to call in your order in advance if your taking it home, but they have a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy as well.
