I used L&L this past week for the second time and had a really great experience. We had three stops total and only moved the bigger items (bed, dresser, etc), but everything was incredibly seamless. Doug was great to work with, as was his team! Everything was completed in about 2 hours. It did come out to be a higher cost than we anticipated, but I believe although the move only took about 2 hours, there is a 4 hour minimum charge so it totaled to a little under $700 without tip. I've lived in hoboken for 8 years and always used tommys movers. Since tommys doesn't do moves to NYC, I used L & L instead. I wasn't moving any furniture at all- just boxes, suitcases full of clothes, and also tote bags that i filled after i used all my boxes. There were pros and cons to my experience: PROS: -doug was extremely responsive and called me minutes after i completed the online form. He is friendly and professional. -doug and his two guys arrived early and were efficient in getting everything out of my 4th floor walk-up. Everyone was very nice. CON (and this is a big one!) -I was quoted $158 an hour + the tunnel toll cost. The guys arrived at 7 AM and were done at 9:45 AM. So let's call it 3 hours. That should have landed me around $500-$600 if you include the tunnel cost. When everything was done, Doug quoted me $924!! After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I said I wasn't expecting that and that I only had $800 in cash (I thought this would have been MORE than enough including generous tips for the crew) he recalculated the cost and came to $850. He said they had to use extra boxes to Move my tote bags since they weren't in boxes. He also said the cost includes their drive back to NJ (which is only 30 minutes, i do it a few times a week) Fortunately my boyfriend had extra cash so we could pay them. Moving is obviously a draining and expensive experience but I never expected to pay $850 (plus tip) for a 3 hour move that involved ZERO furniture. Make sure you ask the right questions before moving forward with this company so you aren't surprised with a huge expense at the end. read more

I needed a few items moved between floors of my home. I asked Doug for 2 guys. He brought four. He tried to charge me $794 for 45 minutes of work. He told me at the END of the job that there was a 3 hour minimum and then pointed to some fine print in the contract that he had me sign in a rush, and never pointed this out. I never would have agreed to this. He didn't even need to bring a truck. Then he insisted on cash only. Wonder why? They waited while I went to the bank. He claims he told me "cash only" beforehand but I wouldn't have accepted the job. He wouldn't even take Venmo. I would recommend reading the contract thoroughly, or better yet, steer clear of Doug and L and L movers. read more

I called L & L after recommendations from two friends. Doug came out quickly to give an estimate and followed up (perhaps more than I would have liked, but it did end up being helpful) until I was ready to book. I was pleased that they had availability on my preferred date, despite somewhat short notice. The most remarkable thing to me, though, was how quickly and seemingly easily the team worked on moving day. The four men were nice and respectful to me; they worked well together; and all of them hustled, but didn't make the experience feel rushed or chaotic. I had previously used L&L in prior moves and had a good experience until this last time. Moving is stressful in itself and I use movers to help take some of that stress away but that was not the case. This past time I used L&L, Doug quoted one amount and then came in $400 over my estimate. Partially because he charged me $25/flight to take a couch down the stairs because it wouldn't fit in an elevator. Last time I used them I lived in a 4 story walk up and don't remember extra charges because they had to carry things down stairs. Throughout the whole move, there was constant complaining from Doug. How many boxes I had, how heavy something was and why was my couch so big (although in the grand scheme of couches it's just a regular size). He is paid for this service, I don't need the complaining to add to the stress of the day. The rest of the guys were completely professional and I had no issues with them. They showed up on time and came in under the time that was quoted for the move (4 hours instead of 5-6). Which if they came in under the time, why was it still $400 over the estimate? read more

L & L movers were absolutely fantastic. The crew on the ground gets 5+ stars as they were on time, friendly, careful, and moved quickly even though I was moving out of a narrow brownstone in August. However the reason I knocked a star off is because their boss and owner Doug is a total jerk. He's rude and doesn't keep good notes so asks the same questions over and over again. He's very short on the phone and hard to get in touch with. I only moved forward with L & L as the building I moved into recommended them. I'm glad I did as the day of process was seamless, however maybe the owner should be removed from the process completely. read more

Sammy's crew of Angelo, Wolf, and Big Mike MC, were relentless and constantly moving- we came in way way under the estimate because of their hustle. I just moved yesterday from a one bedroom to a two bedroom apartment, within the same building, and had to write a review about the great service I received from L&L! First of all, when I started reaching out to moving companies for estimates, Doug responded to my online request immediately and came over to give me an in person estimate within an hour of my pressing "submit" on their website. He quoted me a fair price and was just a nice guy all around when I met him. Then, I got confirmation the day before our move via a call from Doug - always nice to hear from the same person again. He also let me know that my move would be earlier than anticipated (morning vs afternoon) which was great. Finally, the day of our move arrived. Luckily, we were only moving down the hall (no elevators or truck needed). The team arrived earlier than anticipated and got to work straight away. The guys were super quick and efficient, even taking care of all the clothes in both our closets (which I had not expected). I also realized that a cushion on my dining room chair had stuck to the chair itself and immediately, one of the gentlemen pulled out a sandpaper block and started working on my chair, making it look as good as new! The team finished the move well under the estimated time frame and were polite, friendly, and extremely helpful in making my anxiety about moving disappear. Doug and his team were punctual, professional, and FAST. Provided a COI to my apartment building seamlessly. They moved our very full 2 bedrooms worth of furniture and stuff (we're talking around 50 boxes) from jersey city to suburbs 40 minutes away in a 5 hour time span in 90 degree weather. Originally thought the move would take 7-8 hours. We started at 7:15am and were done by 12:15pm. They were friendly, helpful, and made a stressful process as easy as possible. L&L did a great job with my move. They arrived early and were very efficient. I needed to book movers on short notice and they were one of the only companies with availability and gave me the best rate out of the 5 other companies I called. We were moving our stuff into a storage unit and they helped us pick out the right size for the amount of things we had. It made me uneasy that they weren't all wearing masks (2 out of 4), but they kept their distance from us for the most part and I understand it's probably very hot to wear one while lifting furniture. The crew was courteous and did a great job. Doug the main contact is extremely rude in my opinion. He practices questionable business practices as he failed to mention a three hour minimum and half hour travel fee in his quote....considering we were moving within Hoboken and they advertise as a local Hoboken mover this seems very unnecessary. He also insists on coming to your home to give you a quote as it's "NJ law" except it's only for his deceptive schemes to try to charge you more based on how much he thinks your income is. Every reasonable ask to Doug was met with the unhelpful and rude response along the lines of "I've been doing this for 20 years I know what I'm talking about" except he doesn't bc he was reluctant to give his certificate of insurance to my management company because he didn't feel they were legit. Additionally he insisted we begin at 7 am and get 2-3 parking signs per move in and out location, except the city of Hoboken doesn't honor these until 8 am...so clearly needs to be updated on how things work. If you want to pay more and be ripped off then by all means this is your company. read more

We found L&L through a friend's referral, and were SO glad we did. Doug was so quick to reply to my inquiry and came by to give me an in-person estimate (took 2 minutes!). They were accommodating with my move-out date and were able to give me the details I needed to organize my move with my building in town. The moving day -- I worry about everything, and they made our move from Hoboken to the burbs as stress-free as possible. They were quick, had a system for working together, and were careful with my belongings. The move ended up being less $$ than we were quoted, and we were so happy with how everything went. Shaun has great communication skills, and he continuously calls/texts for updates, which makes my life super easy in this modern world. They did an excellent job moving me out and in within the hour. We used these guys to move from Jersey City to Gillette, NJ. Doug is definitely a pro. He was able to come extra early one morning before work to give us an estimate. His rates were good and he seemed confident so we had no problem choosing to go with his company. The crew showed up early (almost too early, the building would not let them start because they were so early) and were ready to work. They used the time to come up and do all the pre-work like wrapping and dismantling. As soon as the elevator was available, it was like watching a well oiled machine. The apartment was emptied out in no time at all. The guys were just as great on the other end. They had all the stuff inside the house just as fast, and nothing was damaged. they assembled everything and Doug was able to actually knock a good amount of money off the quoted price because they were done early. He even had pointers for buying furniture and home renovations. Doug and his crew were fantastic. As long as you're clear about expectations as well as hours, you won't find a better crew to move your stuff in the area. read more

We used L and L recently. In setting up the move they were very responsive in determining the price and needs and answering questions. They are a smaller, local Hoboken moving company and therefore don't offer the same services that larger more established national movers or white glove movers may offer namely TV mounting and unmounting, comprehensive packing and unpacking etc., They aren't as professional as you might find but they are generally courteous. Moving should be hassle free though and it was not in our experience with L and L. If you are doing a small, contained local move they are fine but otherwise I'd recommend going somewhere else. Some of the movers we worked with were excellent and hard working while others much less so. The main point of contact was flabbergasted - always - but he also works hard. We have used L & L twice in the last 6 months. Doug worked to provide a great crew both times. He arrived on time for the estimates and the crew arrived on time for the move. The first move even came in a bit lower than his estimate! We moved 3/4 of our furniture and belongings into storage and the other 1/4 to our temporary apartment. Then we moved from the apartment into our new condo and that included getting our stuff out of storage. The last move was on the morning of the anticipated mega-snow storm! The crew couldn't have been better at managing our move. They are friendly, professional, and took good care of our belongings. In addition, they worked hard to get us in before the snow. I'd give the actual movers employed by this company 5 stars but their office only 2. We booked these guys to move our 1-bedroom from Newport, Jersey City, to Hoboken based on recommendations from coworkers. They charged us $108/hour for 3 guys and a moving truck. The guys showed up just about on time and worked really fast but were also careful about all our items. We tipped them pretty well, we were so impressed by their work. Afterwards, I went back to the original estimate and saw that it was for 4 hours, while our move was completed in 3 (showed up just after 9, finished before 12), partially due to our packing up everything and moving over some items on our own beforehand. They added in a 1/2 hour travel time to the final bill. I called them and spoke to the owner (?) Doug, who insisted that the 4 hour estimate meant a 1/2 travel time plus 3.5 hours working time, as opposed to 4 hours of working time with the 1/2 travel time comped. We've never used movers before so I don't dispute that that's how things are done. However, I felt Doug was rather rude when I talked to him about it and refused to acknowledge that the way he wrote up the estimate has any possibility of being confusing to newbies. He kept insisting that I just didn't understand how their billing system worked, when I did, I just think they misled us during the estimate process, even if it wasn't intentional. I see 4 hours on one line item, 1/2 hour on another line item, I would think the total included is 4.5 hours and not that the 4 hours on one line item includes the 1/2 hour on another line item. So, I'd definitely recommend them for not being scammy and for employing really hard workers, but not so much on customer service skills, if that's important to you. read more

Shortly after my review was posted, Doug reached out to me personally and discussed my concerns with me (largely addressing them in the process). To see this level of attention from a business owner *after* the fact speaks volumes to just how interested Doug is in growing a base of not just happy customers, but repeat customers. To address the concerns I initially raised: - Doug has assured me that the change on the day to flat rate is entirely optional, and that I can choose to be billed at the hourly rate. - L&L *do* pack, but the packing is done ahead of time by a crew that specializes in packing. So, if you do see a need to have packing done, let them know ahead of time. - The cash only policy I encountered was not the norm...it was a result of a temporary inability to process credit cards. I'm told that this capability will be restored shortly. So, in summary, L&L employs very personable staff who treated my furniture and boxes with the care they deserved. L&L's owners are reasonable folks who are attentive to the needs of their customers, even after the fact. I wasn't impressed before, but I certainly am now. Bravo gentlemen! read more

I've used L&L two times now. First was just to move all our furniture from street (we rented our own trucks) to 4th floor walk up apartment. They estimated it would take a couple hours, and I think they finished in one. Along with being fast and efficient, they were able to get big furniture up with little problem. Second time was when I tried to schedule them for a move but they were booked through the month so I hired another company (feel free to read my poor review/rant of them), who wasn't able to complete the job and get all furniture out so I called L&L on a Saturday afternoon and they were able to meet my super that following Monday morning to handle the rest for me. I definitely recommend this company! Plus, they're located in Hoboken so it's really convenient for local moves. read more

Never, ever booking with L&L again. I was moving within Hoboken - 8 blocks to be exact. It was a 10 minute walk and about a 2 min drive. I went with L&L because Doug was really accommodating and assured me the move wouldn't take long if I had all my boxes packed and ready for this guys. I actually went with him because he didn't require (or disclose) that there was minimum time for moving. Doug's crew was mostly great and all my things were moved efficiently but dealing with Doug was extremely stressful. I felt disrespected multiple times. He constantly complained about the walk up (even though I told him on the phone how many flights I had). He complained about my couch being old and fabric from the pillows getting on his sweatshirt. (I'm sorry moving isn't exactly the cleanest task??) He originally quoted me $777 for an 8 block move that he estimated to take four hours. He told me on the phone it would be $187/hour. In the end it took his guys just about two hours in TOTAL. Doug then calculated at the end that it would be $650... $187/hour for two hours would be $374 plus an equipment charge of $35. So I said that couldn't be right and he then said there was a minimum of 3 hour moving fee. I told him I specifically went for his company because he assured me there wasn't going to be a minimum and his guys could complete the job quicker than the estimated 4 hours. He then pulled up our text message from when I was booking and showed a message that was in the typing field that had never been sent that said he required a 3 hour minimum. The message was never sent! He literally just typed that up in front of him just then! I literally couldn't believe the tactics he was going to to swindle us for more money. In the end, I felt scammed, disrespected and extremely frustrated at Doug from L&L Movers. Please if you're looking into booking - ask for all the details in writing because if you don't Doug will scam you. I was out $700 (after tipping) for a two hour move 8 blocks down the road. When the movers that we hired tried to scam us by doubling the price that they originally quoted, we were left with all our belongings on the sidewalk of our new apartment building. I called Doug at 3.15 pm to see if he had any guys available to help us. Doug PERSONALLY came to help us move the rest of our stuff! He showed up at 3.30 and his 3 guys showed up 15 mins later. They were done moving us in by 4.20. Without him we would have spent all night hauling boxes upstairs. So easy, so quick!!! My gf and I moved on a Saturday morning, and we were completely moved in under 3 hours with just two guys. Everything was handled with care, and the guys were true pros. Not to mention they both had a very pleasant demeanor and sense of humor for 7:30 in the AM! As for the price, I did a lot of calling around and comparing, and L&L had the best prices too. Sometimes you get what you pay for, but Doug gave us a fair price and the end result was better than we could've imagined. Refused to give us a quote and the price was so astronomically high, I could never in good conscience recommend them. I used them several times in the past (which is why I trusted them when they said the price would be reasonable) and they sprung an almost $2500 bill, CASH ONLY by the way, when I was expecting at most $1000. The crew was great but the guy in charge , Doug, really ruined the experience. I asked several times for a price, my Dad even asked and he refused to even give us a ballpark. I cannot understand how this business has gained such a high rating. Used their service about 5 years ago and it still has an affect on me today. Completely disorganized. The one day move turned into a two day project where furniture was broken and many items and boxes missing/stolen. Moving is hard enough. Losing priceless memories is heartbreaking. The "owner" showed no sympathy towards a single mother and her daughter. He kept yelling, cursing and screaming like a rude, vulgar, misogynist pig and kept bragging about his firemen duties which I don't see what that had to do with my move. How I kept my cool I will never know, oh maybe because he kept threatening to have his nephew shut the job down which he inconsiderately did. Wow, what a man displacing a family. I am still disgusted by his childish behavior and tantrums. And this guy is apparently a fireman?! Wow! I just lost hope in humanity. During this time in 2012 I can say the staff was very unprofessional, unreliable, irresponsible, careless, and lacked empathy. Women beware. These workers should be drug tested beforehand if they are going to be responsible for your belongings. To this day I go to look for something only to remember that it is GONE due to the hands of L&L Response Update: This review is 100% accurate as the time of service was August of 2012 (between 5-6 years). From my recollection the workers came late with the blue van/truck. The workers on the job were Doug's nephew (as he made it know), Mike (I believe), and another man ( Frank maybe) that did not appear to be sober of any kind. To verify the damage please ask your nephew if he recalls damaging a fireplace while he was on the phone with his girlfriend and not saying anything about it until he realized we had seen what happened. Then all he could mumble was a quick sorry under his breath. I believe Mike was who was spoken to about the missing items which were never found. As to why I have waited so long to post a review was based on not knowing that this company had participated with yelp. Doug has messaged me asking me to call his office but why would I want to put myself through such verbal abuse again? Any and all questions I will be willing to address here. I have used L&L 4 times. I have used them 4 times BECAUSE they are on time, NEVER BROKEN ANYTHING, and they always get the job done! The first time we used them was 15 years ago...they moved us out of Hoboken into the burbs... Happily it was the same crew moving us back. They were early, fast, and put everything where I asked them to. Never complaining about the horrible packing job we did or the horrible weather ! The crew was funny, fast AND Kind! My wife and I booked moving help through U-Haul's website and after days of not hearing from them we had to cancel the day before the move. We called L & L and they were eager to help with less than a 24 hour notice. Luckily they had a cancellation and Doug was able to schedule us. We only moved a couple blocks down the street but the crew couldn't have been better. They moved everything from point A to point B in about 2 hours and the only reason it took that long was because there were 2 move-ins going into the building we were moving out of.
