This is a hidden gem of a chocolate factory/store. Their hours are a little different. I come here because I have a Salon appointment every month. Every time I've been at something different and never the same. But it's delicious every time. Their own toffee peanut brittle is so good. This place bills itself as a South Asian chocolatier (seemingly on the northern side of South Asian). They had a rather spectacular spread of desserts, many including banana and date. A Kashmiri chili drinking chocolate delivered a convincingly spicy flavor. My pastries included a delectable-looking date cake and a chocolate chip cookie with bananas. The taste of tropical fruits and chocolate works awfully well together, and the chocolate was rich. While NYC has its share of cookie-cutter chocolate chain shops, I intentionally go off the grid to explore independent chocolatiers elsewhere that are more notable. No...not Godiva. Heavens no. Chocolate Uzma came up as a chocolatier I'd bookmarked a few years ago for a possible Chicago trip. Uzma Sharif takes her chocolates skills seriously and puts her heritage in each of those chocolate squares. Her flavor combinations are crafted with skill. They're daring and strangely satisfying with unexpected ingredients (Indian Chili, Turmeric+ Ginger, Hazelnut+Coriander and others) and packed in a bold yellow box. Chocolate boxes are already preselected. However, I am picky so didn't want to feel like I needed to be bounded by a pre-curated box with chocolate flavors I wasn't going to eat. Not a problem. I called and was told I can type in flavors I wanted to exclude with flavors I wanted to add. Easy. Mention must be made that if you have any dietary restriction, some of Uzma's chocolates when you order, will indicate whether they contain dairy or if they're gluten-free. But a major highlight is that Uzma Sharif's shop as a whole, is pork-free down to their marshmallows. The dark chocolate that's used is bold and complemented the rich Passion Fruit, Raspberry, Chai, Indian Chili and a few others in my box perfectly. And the melt factor was all there too. I received a 12-pc box ($32) of these as a gift from work and it was spectacular! The flavor combinations are very unique and intriguing, and the chocolates were all quite delicious and not overly sweet. My favorite chocolates were the Kala Namak (black salt caramel), Jaipur (Indian chili), and Zara (fresh raspberry). I wasn't a huge fan of the Zeera (honey cumin), but that was mostly because I found cumin to be a jarring flavor in chocolate. A minor complaint was that the description that came with the box lists 13 chocolate types, not 12, and that some of the chocolates didn't look entirely like their illustration (can't say I wasn't slightly a fan of the intrigue, though!). I think I also got some duplicates because I did not see the Moroccan Mint or Assam (lemon) or the Ginger, sadly. Also the description was placed right above the chocolates in the box, which led to some sticking of chocolate components to the paper. We're recently moved nearby and are addicted to Chocolate Uzma!! During the holidays, we were really treating ourselves and were stopping in 2-3 times a month. Since then we've slowed down, but have tried almost every baked good and some of the chocolates. My favorites are the flourless chocolate cake and dark chocolate turtles. The dark chocolate turtles are a real treat! They are decadent and every bite is nice- love the roasted pecans. My partner's faves are the chocolate chip cookies and brownie. He says the chocolate chip cookies are one of the best he's ever had (and he's had a lot). The brownie is dense and rich. It is fudgey on the inside and a little cakey/crispy at the edges. I go back and forth between the brownie and the flourless chocolate cake being my favorite pastry. The salted caramel date cake is also good. Very moist and not as decadent as the other desserts. I favor chocolate, so this one is hard for me to judge. If you are looking for high quality, single origin chocolate, Chocolate Uzma is the place for you. They also have yummy sipping chocolate- it is very rich and thick. If you love chocolate, you won't be disappointed. My partner and I happily share 1 order and enjoy it with the marshmallow! They have great holiday specials too. The pecan pie (special last Christmas) was amaaazing!! All of our guests really enjoyed it. I wish they offered pecan pie more often, but maybe I'd get sick of it. We also tried the Lunar New Year mango coconut cake. The cake texture was very nice, the top was a little crisp and the cake was moist. The mango purée had hints of coconut and was the perfect amount of sweetness to balance the cake. Came here to escape a rainy spell when we came for the Renegade Craft Fair and got the hot cocoa + churro combo deal. Churro was on the harder side, but taste was good (even sugar and cinnamon coating) and the dipping chocolate paired well and the portion was just right for a snack. The layout is a bit odd, as I feel they should make more space for seating and to spread their merchandise out more. Wow.... this place is a true gem. I recently stopped by here to pick up some chocolate, and I was simply blown away. This place is a small, South Asian woman owned chocolate store located in East Pilsen. Their menu consists of handcrafted chocolates, drinks (coffee/chai/hot chocolate), and pastries/cookies, all with a strong South Asian influence in terms of flavor profile. We tried their handcrafted chocolates, which was hands down the most unique chocolates we had tried before; we absolutely loved the South Asian flavors blended into the chocolate. While at first, we were a little skeptical that flavors like cumin/coriander could work with chocolate, Chocolat Uzma definitely pulls it off. We tried the Kala Namak, Earl Grey Rose, Marrakech, Kashmiri Chai, Zeera, and Golden Spice; they were all phenomenal. The one thing that really surprised me about all the chocolates was their texture- they all had softer interiors which just melt in your mouth when you take a bite. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Kala Namak (black salt caramel)- Loved this one. The caramel tastes homemade, and has a sense of savoriness/heartiness to it. The salt was more subtle than I expected, but it adds to the flavor. Earl Grey Rose (tea and rose)- This one had a stronger, slightly bitter rose flavor to it, which was complemented by a more suble tea flavor. Marrakech (hazelnut, coriander, praline)- definitely our favorite. This one in particular stood out to us because of the crunchier texture to the soft interior. The hazelnut and praline perfectly go together, and the subtle coriander flavor surprisingly enhances the overall flavor profile. Definitely must try! Kashmiri Chai (black tea cardamom)- another one of our favorites. A classic strong Indian tea flavor with notes of cardamom, which went perfectly with the milk chocolate exterior. Zeera (honey cumin)- the first I think I noticed with this one was the smell of cumin before biting into it; this definitely has a strong cumin flavor to it. The honey is definitely more subtle here, but works well with the cumin and chocolate. Golden Spice (turmeric, cardamom)- last but not least. Cardamom + chocolate is a killer combination, and the notes of turmeric here was the perfect final touch to this item. Overall, this is the perfect spot to pick up some chocolates as a gift. It's a locally owned business offering a really unique product. The customer service was great, and the packaging of the chocolate is also perfect. I found my way to Chocolate Uzma during the Renegade Craft festival that was taking place last in mid-May. They were advertising a special for a churro + sipping chocolate during the event. Quite simply, it was DELICIOUS. The churro wasn't overly fresh, but the chocolate dipping sauce was amazing - after finishing the churro, I literally cleaned out the chocolate remaining in the serving dish with my fingers. If you haven't had sipping chocolate before, it's like drinking creamy melted dark chocolate - way better than hot chocolate! This was served with a toasted marshmallow which literally melted in your mouth. After sampling this delicious combo, I got back in line to buy some chocolate nibs (for me) and other chocolate gifts to take home as gifts. Can you tell I love chocolate?
