My wife and I stopped in to taste/buy some wine on our way to Joseph Oregon. There were no signs outside, on the door or in the tasting room regarding their COVID-19 protocol. There were two young women behind the wine bar. We were immediately asked if we had a reservation for a tasting. We said no; the place was completely empty. We were then interrogated as to where we were from, where we were going and were told we needed a reservation to be there. They were rude and condescending. We answered none of their questions and walked out feeling like they were attempting to shame my wife and I. We buy a lot of wine and have never been treated so poorly. I would highly suggest posted signs outside regarding their COVID--19 policies and retrain their staff on customer service. I will never return or purchase their products. read more

This is perhaps the most famous of the Walla Walla wineries. It is situated in an old schoolhouse with a bell (which I rang) and everything. Your enter the large wood foyer, go up the stairs and the tasting room is in a large classroom on the left. I love the Walla Walla wineries because they wave the tasting fee if you buy some wine. The tasting menu is pretty extensive (about 10 wines on the reserve). Our favorite was the 2006 Estate Perigee. The most interesting part of visiting this grand old building is that Joanna Dunham, owner of Dunham winery, actually attended the school as a child. We arrived 15 minutes before the posted closing time of 5:00 and were told that because of the cleaning staff schedule, we would not be able to do a tasting. One, if the policy is to stop tastings before 5:00, post the actual tasting room time as ending earlier. Two, what kind of business model bases it's schedule around the cleaning staff? We bought cases of wine at several of the other more hospitable wineries in Walla Walla and probably would have purchased some at L'Ecole. Not only will we avoid this winery on our next visit, we will definitely discourage others from the same sour experience. Great variety of wine (I'm so punny!): tasted 17 on my last visit! These guys have everything and it's good stuff. L'Ecole has been in business for quite some time now and are doing extremely well. And for good reason: these wines pair well with food, but also stand alone just fine if you feel like snacking between meals. The wines are very approachable and are appealing to both the beginner and the aficionado alike. The staff is fantastic and super friendly. It is a bit touristy. My best advice... Don't go during peak hours on peak days and you'll have a better experience. HINT: Take the time to learn about the history of the building and the wine bottle labels; it's a great story. This taste room is full of rich history and books! Founded by French Canadian immigrants, the region is full of historical sites and tidbits. The staff is genuinely nice and interested in helping you find your way through the many offerings they have in store. We had learned of the winery through a friend and it did not disappoint. Their Merlot and Ferguson varietals have won many awards for this house which they proudly showcase on site. The decor and grounds are stunning, and the prices are moderate to high but totally worth it. Take the Semillon and the Frenchtown to go and enjoy them outside on the yard while you catch Pokémon. Best nerd date ever. If not, take the time to explore the school, the book and souvenirs while you enjoy the wines and tastings. Fees can be applied to bottle purchases. Santé! Salut! read more

We had a great time at L'Ecole No 41, which was decently crowded at about 1pm on a random Tuesday. The staff did an amazing job juggling all of us who were standing at the counter , pouring wines, explaining wines, and creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. To begin I'm not a wine drinker but I am a fun Designated Driver and enjoy visiting wineries and visiting with my people. This winery was special in every way. Placed in an old school house (L'Ecole is French for school) the venue is relaxing and if an old school house can be elegant yet charming this one is the highest level of both. We loved our wine steward Sierra. She was knowledgeable, professional, fun and even though she was very busy we felt like we were her only guests. Honestly, this was the best experience I've had at a winery. The people in my party that do know wine and are club members at multiple wineries said that they enjoyed all of the wines they tasted. All of my party ended up becoming E'Lcole wine club members. I look forward to coming back for member events. read more

My favorite wine - found in denver during a wine tasting at a golf course! We have been wanting to visit for ages, but Walla walla is over 3 hours from any family members we might visit! Finally we took a road trip and could make a stop here! Location is gorgeous, although it was raining so we didn't spend as much time as i would have. The old school house is fabulous! Beautiful! Our favorite Merlot was still as good as i remember and we could a couple other keepers. Though they were a bit more than our price point would allow. The building and grounds are gorgeous. The wine is good, but not quite as good as they think it is. Our tasting experience was not a good one. The young man who poured for us first started by sneering at our local Woodinville tasting rooms. He then rushed us through all the wines he poured. It was not relaxing, informative, or fun, all the things I think a wine tasting should be. But again, what a beautiful setting in which to be treated shabbily! It was almost worth it. read more

This place is my favorite tasting room in Walla Walla area so far. I first sampled L'Ecole's wines a couple years ago at a wine shop in Portland. We promptly bought a bottle - great wine and not expensive (was in the $20 range). Prices have risen somewhat since then, but it is still worth buying. Have purchased several of their wines since and been pleased with each one. In Walla Walla recently and determined that I had to go to their tasting room. It is a little outside of town, but easy to find. The building is beautiful as well as the tasting room. Everyone we spoke to was knowledgeable and fun to talk to. The tasting fee is refunded with bottle purchase (and how can you resist buying a bottle?!). If you are in the area, definitely stop by. read more

Yelp says two stars is "Meh. I've experienced better" and I'd agree. The school house is beautiful and charming. There is outdoor seating if you look it's hidden. It was very interesting trying the Walla Walla versus Yakima wines. I agree with the review that said they were playing it safe. I did find a bottle I liked. I thought the $60 reserve cab was crazy over priced. We spent 5 days wine tasting over the 4th of July. I found Cabs from $20 to $40 that were light years better than their $60 Cab. It was disappointing. After my return discussing l' Ecole with friends and folks I meet in tasting rooms there is a very strong common thread. Almost everyone was disappointed by their visit to L' Ecole. Both by the wine and the staff. I feel they are coasting on their reputation and not trying to make every wine the best possible and every visit the most enjoyable possible. read more

What a great tasting visit we had at L'Ecole. My wife is in a wheelchair and they accommodated us far beyond our expections! With approximately 30 minutes notice, they directed us to the cellar with easy wheel chair access: set up a separate table with chairs, ice water, breadsticks, tasting notes and wine glasses; and assigned a person to us who ran up/down stairs bringing the tasting wines of the day! If I were going to evaluate this winery on the facility it would get a five star rating. Same for the customer service. I only rate wineries based on the wines I taste when I'm there so this place gets a two star rating. Nothing I tasted should cost more than $12 to $15 here, but that's not the case. A few of the wines had a nice bouquet and initially had a nice flavor, and completely died on the finish. If you like really jammy, fruit forward wines, do not go to L'Ecole No 41 because you won't find it there. The staff and the old school house are very nice, and I like the logo, but I'm not there just to hang out or shop. read more

One of the better known wineries, L'Ecole demonstrated how they earned that reputation when we walked into a spacious, yet crowded, tasting room. Our server was ready and waiting for us when we arrived and started us with ample information about each wine. He also provided extra data about the winery and winemaker as we went along. Good solid performance on wines and the service. We ended up purchasing a Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Red Blend (Perigree). I will return next time I'm in the area. read more

Very cool schoolhouse which turns 100 this year. The tasting room is nice and open with a decent amount of bar space. Picnic tables are outside on the lawn and there's a bike rack. We've heard from others that L'Ecole was just skating by on their reputation but I really don't think that was the case. They had some really solid wines. My favorite was the merlot. The tasting fee is $5 and is waved with any bottle purchase. They had some really affordable bottles around $20 which I really appreciated. Service was unsatisfactory. The guy running the tastings only told us what wine he was pouring only half the time. The other times he just poured and would walk off to chat with other patrons. No explanations or conversations of what we were tasting. He felt it was necessarily to continuously repeat that "he is alone" and that it "would be a while" before he can ring is up for the wine we purchased. When we asked if we can open a bottle to enjoy in the patio he said we can but that he can't provide us with the cork opener or glasses only to be allowed by his superior who was much more gracious. The wine was subpar and did not stand out in any way though we did enjoy the 2013 Chenin Blanc the most out of all the wines featured. Would not be returning. read more

They refused to give us our last tasting because we were talking loud. Im not sure if they thought we were intoxicated because we don't have soft voices. Not only did they short our tastings, but they charged us full price for our tasting. I guess this company thinks customer service is not important. One of the more popular wineries in Walla Walla. It is a very nice set up you'll want to take pictures inside and outside. It can get quite busy so you may want to go early in the morning. It's a great place to start your wine tasting from the outside of Walla Walla and work yourself towards town. Personally I find the wine to be average. I loved this place! The staff was all extremely friendly, the location is a little outside of town so a perfect stop on the way in, or on your way out of Walla Walla. It is an old school house that has enough of the old decor to be nostalgic but they have done an excellent job remodeling it to make it the perfect classy and comfortable tasting room. Their red blend, which is a deal at $19, and also allows for a waived tasting fee (which is only $5 to begin with) is awesome, I would highly recommend it! The whites are all on the sweeter side (I am a red drinker) and their reds are all very good, solid choices. The guy who helped us was super helpful, answering all our questions and even suggestion we taste items not on the tasting menu, which is always fun. I recently visited with a group of 10 from California and L'Ecole was very accommodating. The tasting room has a classic/youthful feel, as it used to be a school house (beautifully renovated) and along with Ben (tasting room manager and an exceptional host/tour guide) you feel very welcome. Ben was so informative and enthusiastic that we all left feeling a bit smarter, in terms of wine knowledge. Ben was a great teacher! Not only was the hospitality a 5 star rating, the wines are a 5 star rating as well. I recommend the Grenache! Definitely coming back. :) read more

Visit them to check out the building but don't expect their wines to WOW you. I really felt that all their wines were playing it safe and nothing stood out as spectacular or interesting. Sorta felt like a McMenamins in Walla Walla rather than Portland. We went over the Autumn Release weekend so there was a tasting fee (refundable with purchase) and a nice cheese/cracker spread. I thought the bathrooms were cute and the grounds looked nice but it was raining out so we didn't take a stroll around. Easy highway access and would be good for large groups with a nice gift shop. I took lots of pictures of the building but doubt we'll return when we're next in town. read more

Having served L'Ecole No. 41 wines during my brief stint as a server, I knew they made some high-quality wines. It's definitely worth visiting for the location alone: a historic school house with a beautifully restored interior, huge lawn in back where kids can play, and a larger than average tasting menu. There were 14 wines available the day we were there, and for $5 you can choose the ones you want (though they prefer that you don't try all 14); the fee is refunded with purchase of a bottle.
