L'Ecrivain restaurant was my first dining experience at a single Michelin star rated restaurant and it certainly did not disappoint. After arriving, a coat check person took our coats and we had some cocktails in the bar. The prices were very reasonable. Only about five euros for whiskey. After finishing our cocktails we were seated in the main dining room. We were presented our menus and surprisingly, the price was only 75 Euros for an amazing five courses. I had the scallops followed by the deer and finished with a Tiramisu. The dinner also included coffee or tea and petit fours. Service, Ambiance, and food presentation were all excellent. I would definitely return to this restaurant anytime. It was an amazing dining experience and a good value with all things considered. Strongly recommended! read more

Of the three Michelin rated restaurants I dined at in Dublin, L'ecrivain took top prize honors. It was simply amazing. The highlights: -Great venue! Everything from the art to the spacing is done very thoughtfully and the whole restaurant has a lot of character. -The Guinness soda bread is the best bread ever and they just kept it coming. It's amazing how much bread can make or break a meal :P There's a 4-course tasting menu for €95, which includes a three rounds of amuse bouche and some other special sweets with coffee or hot tea. Of the courses here's what was on the menu: -Seared Yellowfin Tuna -Charred Turbot -Rabbit -Apricot Compote, Fresh Almond, Thyme Madeiline -Yoghurt Parfait The highlight was definitely the rabbit, which was so tender and combined with the seared foie gras was an exceptionally flavorful dish. You just have so many diverse tastes, textures and temperatures-- it was really a masterpiece. Highly recommend L'ecrivain for any trip to Dublin! read more

Really, really good restaurant, with creative dishes, plating, & rich with flavours! A well-balanced wine list, with plenty of options under €100, & a delightful sommelier to help. We had the tasting menu, with a lovely St. Emilion. The dishes (Scallops, Turbot, Venison, etc.) were each delicious, & with subtle layered flavours. The mushroom soup amuse-bouche was amazing, with these tiny pickled mushrooms as a counterpoint to the rich soup & truffle shavings. The timing of the dishes was impeccable. The staff were lovely: friendly, fun, attentive, & very on the mark. The chef, Derry Clark, came out to say hello, & is a very funny & charming guy, on top of being an amazing chef. So, you are hungry and you have far too much money in your pocket and you want to address both erm.. 'problems' ...then boy do I have the answer for you! L'Ecrivain is a Michelin starred gaff (2 I think) serving up some of the best grub in town, the portions are not huge but you rarely leave hungry... just broke, and you can probably live with that unless you really went in expecting McDonalds. One of my favourite features of the place (apart from the dining room on lots of levels, balconies, hide-aways etc... and the rather nice bar/ piano room downstairs) is their talent for getting good staff. There was (and I hope she is still there) a sommelier there, a short blond girl full of life whose knowledge of wine was such that she could tell you what wine to have with your chicken McNuggets - and she'd be right!, quite a talent to have! Dublin Bay prawns have always been one of the restaurants signature dishes, and indeed they are nice but their foie gras is also excellent and worth a bash! read more

If you like your plates large, your food small and have recently came into a large sum of money then L'ecrivain is the restaurant for you. Ok so the courses might be small but If like me you are having 10 of them and 2 bread baskets (I don't do things by halves) you most definitely will not starve. I am a big fan of what they conjure up in here. The flavours are great, everything is pretty as a picture and you certainly cannot recreate these meals at home. The restaurant is also packed with friendly staff and you won't be kept waiting for anything. They also only blinked a little bit when we told them we wouldn't be having the Foie Gras. Not a problem, we can swap that immediately sir/madam. Why 4 stars....not for the first time they shoved me into an empty side room with no other people! I am also not a fan of the tip being included in the bill. I will decide myself if I want to give them a €30 bonus......ok turns out I did, the staff were fantastic. read more

I was here with a friend for a company Christmas party, and what a delightful experience! This restaurant is absolutely beautiful. Lovely food, amazing staff, background piano music playing, and several courses of tiny portions of delicious food. We had some drinks in the ground level area, where piano was being played. The whole setting was beautiful, and wine glasses never empty. We then went upstairs to our seats, and had a few courses of deliciousness. The staff are also super helpful and nice. Even though the food is small, there were so many courses that we were stuffed by the end of it. If you find yourself with a few extra euros this month, you should definitely come here. read more

5 star experience from start to finish! My husband and I did the tasting menu which was around 8 courses and also did the wine pairing. The only complaint I would have for the wine pairing is one of the bottles was Menage trois wine which I have often in the states and is about a $10 bottle of wine, for a $500 + dinner for two with wine pairing, I would have expected a more palatable and prestigious wine selection and is the only reason I am giving it a 4 star. Other than that, each dish was beautifully presented and we had three or four people attending to our table at any given time and didn't need or want for anything. It is a very intimate restaurant but if you're looking for something upscale, this is definitely worth a reservation. read more

We had an exceptional meal here for my birthday. We decided not to go for the tasting menu as this is something we normally do but instead went for the dinner menu and picked our own wine. The wine selection was excellent and not over priced, the bottle of pnot noir we had was silky and 60euro which accompanied beef and deer for main. The atmosphere here is great, music in the background and people just enjoying the food and their company. No pretentiousness just honest food and great service. We came here for lunch before the rugby (and to celebrate my birthday) and I'm sorry to say it was quite the disappointment. Not sure if the experience we had is typical of their usual service (I suspect not given the otherwise strong reviews) but many things were a bit off in terms of service and food. After a flurry of activity to get us seated we were left alone for a long time when we wanted to order. Then struggled to get a basic question answered: Q: "How is the beef cooked?" A: Medium Q: No, HOW is the beef cooked? What's the cooking technique? A: I don't know, I'll get someone else to help you. When you've only got three main course items on the menu, this question really shouldn't have been the struggle it evidently was. Having been assured by his colleague that the meat was going to be really tender and a little pink having been cooked sous-vide and finished on the grill, I was then quite taken aback to find it in large part to have the consistency of shoe leather. To the restaurant's credit, they were very quick to substitute with the chicken - in fact so quick it was on my table about 3 minutes after the beef was cleared. And it was very tasty (as was my wife's fish). And the starters (in particular my truffle risotto) were fantastic in flavour, if somewhat simple in presentation. Overall I was actually surprised how quickly all the food came - it's as it it wasn't cooked to order but all ready to go. But then plates were cleared very slowly every time... On the plus side, we liked the ambiance and the wine was good. It just wasn't a Michelin experience - I could think of many places in Dublin to go for lunch with better food and more change from 250 euro. Which makes me kind of sad as we'd been so looking forward to it and had heard great things... Oh well... read more

In my head I pretty much hate fine dining. I'm bad at posh. Airs and graces look silly on me, a bit like hair bands or strings of pearls. I spent too many of my college years waitressing to find it impossible not to have to actively resist the 'help clear the plates' mechanism that kicks in when the waiter starts to clear the plates. In the calm and beautifully manicured environment of the dining area, my imagination too readily jumps to the frenetic reality of the kitchen, where the mood realistically is about as calm and polished as a drunken sailor in a bar room brawl. I get flashbacks. They are often grim. But most of all, on the odd occasions I do find myself in fabulous restautantville (work), I feel underwhelmed by the experience, especially on the taste-bud front. Not here though. The food was seriously good, the service equal to it, and the dessert chef such a gent that he actually wrote out the recipe for marshmallows for me (strawberry puree in it, delicacy lovers). And yes, I did make them. And yes, they are divine though ok not as pretty or puffy with air as the ones here. But hey, I haven't sat my Michelin star exams yet so there's time. I think this restaurant truly lives up to its reputation - you savour every course, every taste - and the service is friendly yet understated. In a nutshell: Food:5 stars Service: 4.5 stars P/C: 5+stars Overall, I loved l'Ecrivain, for its exquisite food, its refreshing and open-minded decor, and of course its service. This was my second to last day in Dublin for work and I was faced with a dilemma - I had a booking at Thornton's that night (which turned out to be disastrous) but wanted to squeeze in l'Ecrivain at some point - SO, I did a little bit of research and found out that they have these amazing lunch deals (3 courses for 25 euros!!!) So, I wrapped up my morning work a bit early and walked over to where the restaurant was. I was greeted by the maitre d' who took my coat (yes!) and was offered whether I wanted to go up to my table immediately or have a drink at the bar. What do you reckon I did - have a drink at the bar of course! The bar was fantastic - a little grand piano, a small wine cellar, plenty of seating and this intimately cozy looking bar. The bartender offered me an Estrella beer to start with and I relaxed at the bar for about 10 minutes. The dining room is located upstairs - the main dining room is open-space, white and wood colors balanced, and there is a loft area which looked more intimate and warm. The sommelier/server came and offered the menu and I went with the 25 euro lunch menu with the duck liver terrine, cod and the dessert. I also added a scallops starter as another appetizer. Food highlights: 1. Amuse-bouches were wonderful - the pumpkin veloute and the monkfish salad were delectable. 2. The duck liver was prepared very well - the balsamic reduction was a nice balance. 3. The scallops with the white bean sauce and the ham terrine was very nice. The scallops were sweet and with a very firm texture - one of the best scallop dishes I've ever had. 4. Apple sage sherbet to cleanse my palate... 5. The cod - my my, the fish was so tender and buttery, the skin was crisp and delicious. The chorizo minestrone and the anchovy tempura accompaniments were AWESOME. Simply well done. 6. Spiced plum and white chocolate cheesecake was very good - I just wish that I had more time to enjoy! Really - this restaurant is TOP notch from food, service and value perspectives. It totally deserves another Michelin star. read more

Not only does it have top notch food that you would expect in any Michellin starred restaurant, they can boast by far the best staff in the business. I have been here several times and it never ceases to impress me. Plus now that we are all a little more careful how we spend out money they also offer great value with a €25 lunch menu... what a steal. L'Ecrivain is one of the premier restaurants in Dublin---for sure in the top 10. Excellent service and very well prepared and presented French cuisine. The steak I had was extremely tender and cooked right (which is not always the case in Dublin). The ahi sushi was among the better cuts of tuna I've had in Ireland. I have a friend who goes weekly and I can see why! On the downside, L'Ecrivain is very pricey with smaller than expected portions. You'll need an appetizer or salad otherwise you will be hungry. Most mains are in the upper-30s to low 40s euro. The dinner pre-fix dinner is a good option in these troubled times. I think the recession is having an impact on the high-end places in Dublin as it wasn't very crowded for a Thursday night. Arrive early and you can grab a drink at the piano bar downstairs. And for those non-french speakers, the name sounds like Le Knocker Van:) That still cracks me up. read more

We arrived early, however we opted to go straight to our table. We went up one level to our table which was situated just under the mezzanine level. I was eating in a group of 11 (including a 10 week old baby). The waiters were very nice and the service was efficient. We did receive an amuse bouche which was lovely (can't remember what it was). To start I had pigeon, primarily because it is not often that you see it on menus. It was as good as pigeon gets... We also had another amuse bouche between starter and main, which was a blend of cucumber, lemon and some other things. It was grand - not my type of thing to be honest! For my main I had fillet of beef which was superb I must say. The fillet had a very rich, full flavor and texture was firm but tender. Overall portion size wasn't as small as a lot of Michelin star restaurants but if you like a good sunday roast this isn't the place for you, it is however if flavor is what you're after. For desert I had the chocolate dish, slightly too rich in my opinion. To finish we had coffee and Petit Fours (which were interesting). The coffee was a good sweet blend. There are better Michelin starred restaurants, however the ambiance of the place, flavor of the food, friendliness of the staff and overall experience has led me to give this place 5 stars. I was brought here as a birthday surprise. From the moment we entered, it was amazing. We were a litter early so opted for a drink at the bar. The cocktail menu was classy and understated; as was the pianist who we could hear but took a while to place. It was a lovely pre-dinner experience. We enjoyed the 10 course taster menu with accompanying wines. I cannot express how well this was done, everything complemented just as it should. The service was one of the best I've experienced, always there when you needed something but fading into the background the rest if the time. ONE OF DUBLIN'S BEST This very good, very classy restaurant is one of Dublin's best. Excellent food, a good wine list, and friendly service. It's located a short taxi ride from the center of town. The Irish beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the pigeon was equally good. We couldn't get into the dining room (which is up a flight of stairs) with my wife's mobility scooter, so they set up a special table for us in the ground floor bar area, where we had our own waiter and server, all of which made for a very nice experience. read more

My first ever Michelin Star restaurant. White linen and silver service, but I wore khakis and shirt with jacket no tie. Totally acceptable as were jeans and a jacket. We were a party of 12 celebrating my sisters birthday and it was made truly special by this restaurant . Food was Neuville Cuisine style portions but flavors were unique, special, delicious and memorable. Well stocked bar and nice roof top patio where we could smoke cigars. My wife and I visited this restaurant recently. We went for the early sitting at 7pm, as were offered this or 9.30pm by the receptionist when we booked. We were looking forward to the experience; this is a restaurant with a very good reputation, and having read the reviews online my expectations were high. Thankfully I was not disappointed. I will start by saying that this is not the best restaurant I have been to, but the service was by far the best I have seen in Dublin. There is not a huge choice on the menu(s), and I believe they concentrate more on quality. I ordered from the €65 set menu, and my wife ordered a main course from the a la carte menu. We received several amuse-bouche between courses, which consisted of a sweet corn veloute, apple jelly with thyme sorbet, and a coconut and chocolate mousse. All were delicious! On to the dinner itself, I had confit of salmon, which was unusual, but really retained the salmon taste, the belly of pork which was accompanied by various other pork offerings, all very good. (Best crackling I ever had!). The desert was chocolate cheery cake. Food was great, presentation beautiful, service excellent and the restaurant itself was very pleasant. I was here to experience the new Samsung kitchen dining experience. It is a new room in the restaurant where you can watch the cook being prepared and cooked before your eyes and you get to interact and ask the chefs questions. It is a really cool dining room and experience. Great for foodies. You can see everything live or watch it on a screen as the the cameras broadcast it live. The food is amazing. No wonder it is considered the best restaurant in Dublin and Chef Derry Clarke makes amazing creations. So tasty with the best quality ingredients. This was one meal I will never forget. read more

From the moment I emailed them for reservations, they were very gracious and helpful. I had wanted to try some unique Irish fine dining, but I would consider their food more French (initially, I read it was "Irish slow food.") It's a bit farther down from the super loud bars, so it's a quieter environment. They have a nice courtyard on the property, and when you walk in, there's a piano bar downstairs and then dining on the floors above. Most people were pretty dressed up for dinner here. We were also the youngest table by far. We chose the €75 3-course, which had more interesting options than the tasting. The sommelier helped us pick a Vertente Douro from Portugal, which was nice, but a little too light for me. Amuse: Oyster with apple cucumber bonito spuma and caviar House bread: Brown, white, focaccia Starters: 1. Scallops with chicken skin and dashi: there was a nice sweet onion flavor to this 2. Tomatoes with goat curd and lobster with basil: a nice lighter dish Palate cleanser: Chamomile and juniper berry granita with lemon tonic Entrees: 1. Roast cod with coco beans, brown shrimp, lovage oil, sea vegetables. The cod was cooked very well 2. Milk fed veal, celeriac, salsify, onion: the veal was very tender, and I love that celeriac and salsify are in season Desserts: 1. Irish and French farmhouse cheeses: with crackers and mini baguettes; the baguettes were warm and great with the cheeses. There was one that was like a camembert, which I really enjoyed, and the Roquefort was good with the plum jam 2. Mira belle plums with donuts and vanilla ice cream: less exciting than the cheese plate It was generally a pleasant experience, but there were a few hiccups, such as when the chamomile and juniper berry granita (palate cleanser) was brought to us and was basically a solid piece of ice - it had clearly melted and been re-frozen. Then, our main dishes were brought to us without any introduction - they set down the dishes and left. I knew what we were getting since we chose our entrees, but I expected them to tell us about the dishes. The hostess at the front was very friendly, and it was nice that the owner came by to check in at the end of the meal. My wife & I enjoyed an excellent dining experience here last night. We opted for the 10 course tasting menu with accompanying wines. Initially we didn't like the location of the table we were placed at (as I would have been looking at a wall instead of taking in the whole experience of the place) but the friendly staff facilitated a quick move to a cosier table enabling us both to take in the full ambience and atmosphere of the restaurant. Martina the sommelier presented us with each wine and gave excellent descriptions and backgrounds to them all. The food was very well presented and the menu well thought through - again the staff gave good explanations upon presentation. L'ecrivain really is an amazing feature of the Irish dining scene. As you walk in, you are greeted with a beautiful atmosphere and space attended to be helpful staff. The menu is an 8 course delight with some extra options for the adventurous amongst your troop. I had the beef (both cheek and tongue - pretty cheeky stuff!) and mash, absolutely to 'die for dahling'. Seriously though, the meal was aboslutely amazing although the portions could certainly have been larger! Nonetheless it did not disappoint and was worthy of a visit. My partner and I ate here on a Monday night, and it was the worst fine dining experience of my life. Things started out well with the hostess and sommelier, but soon started to go badly. My partner had ordered a complicated first course heavy on the molecular gastronomy so it wasn't immediately obvious how to eat it, but the person who brought us the dishes - a different person from the first two we'd seen - did not explain what anything was. My scallops were perfectly seared, but the tomato was underseasoned and weirdly tough and the coriander accompaniment was just flavorless green goop; the dish was disappointing overall. For a main course, my partner ordered the filet with pickled vegetables and prune chutney. I ordered the lobster with chorizo powder, turf-baked leek, seaweed, and lobster emulsion. There was a bit of a delay in getting them, but we enjoyed the intermezzo, even though we were a little confused as to why we were getting a sorbet before the main course rather than before dessert. Anyway, this time I made a point of asking the server - yet another different person - to show us around our plates. I was surprised that the "chorizo powder" was pale yellow and said so. The server explained in a patronizing way that "a highly scientific process is applied" to turn it to powder. I said, "I understand how it's made, I just can't see how anything involving chorizo wouldn't turn out oily red-orange." And as it turns out, I was right. It was bad. The lobster was perfectly cooked and the baked leek was deliciously crisp-tender, but the chorizo powder literally tasted like nothing. And there was no seaweed - the puree was clearly leek. With no contrast, the dish simply failed. The sommelier came back to ask how we liked our meals, and first of all, he's not the person who should be asking that; and second of all, when I said, uh, I can't taste any chorizo in the chorizo powder, he got defensive. He, too, explained in a patronizing way about maltodextrin, and I said, yes, I understand, it's just not what the menu led me to expect, and without this element, the dish is unbalanced and boring. He said basically, thanks for your feedback, I'll tell the chef - and then he walked away and we never saw him again. There was no offer to make it right, no offer to take the 8 euro supplement for the lobster off the bill, nothing. My partner's beef was pretty good, but not worth what we paid for it. We finished our main courses and waited. And waited. We were already disappointed, but thought, the menu looked so amazing, let's give them one more chance with dessert. I wish we hadn't. The person who had been busing our table offered us dessert menus and returned to take our order. This was a bit confusing; no offense to busing staff, but is this the person we want to be asking for dessert wine recommendations? He did recommend good matches, though, so well done, him. If only the pastry staff were half as competent. My partner got the opera chocolate, which was three components combining chocolate with orange. Two were okay, but one was inedibly tart; when I tasted it, it was so unpleasant, I literally almost spat it out. I ordered the lemon and lime. Again, two components were okay and one was awful. The cheesecake tasted like mass-produced frozen key lime pie and had an unpleasantly gummy texture. I took two small bites, hoping it would get better, and left the rest quivering on the plate. Then we waited for our check. And waited. We felt like we were being deliberately ignored because we dared to complain. I went to the bathroom, leaving my napkin and purse clearly visible on the table; I might as well have shot off a small firework saying, CHECK, PLEASE. When I returned, my partner was visibly bored, fiddling with his phone. The couple who'd been next to us, who were seated perhaps ten minutes before us, had been gone for more than half an hour. After I literally waved someone down, we finally got our check ten minutes later - even though there were only four occupied tables in the whole restaurant! Maybe Monday is not the time to go. Most fine dining places are closed Monday nights, so maybe this is the night L'Ecrivain trains up brand new staff. That's the only explanation I can think of for the inconsistent, slow, confused service we received and the boring, pretentious, badly executed food that was far prettier than it was actually tasty. read more

This is going to be a very short review , as someone who does not give 5 stars lightly , it really has to be something special ??? Well it is !! The food is the best I have ever tasted . Fantastic lunch experience. We had a voucher so the price wasn't a concern. It's definitely one for a special occasion but well worth it. We were given delicious bread to start while we read the menu. We had pork belly (him) and cured mackerel (me) to start, then he had guinea fowl and I had deer. The pommes purees were decadent. We both had cheese to finish and then petit fours with tea and coffee. Service was impeccable. Lunch for two with a bottle of wine and bottled water was €163 including service so like I say it's definitely a place for a treat. The food was presented beautifully and everything was really delicious. When we were leaving they ordered a taxi for us and couldn't have been nicer when it was delayed. The dining room is bright and spacious and very pleasant. Downstairs there is a lovely piano bar for drinks before your meal... or after I suppose! There are lots of nods to Irish writers around the place - here l am with James Joyce! Highly recommended. read more

I came to L'Ecrivain hungry & 1.5 hours later, left completely stuffed and pampered. While the price is on the high side for the dinner menu, the a la carte menu doesn't disappoint either. As I knew what to expect walking in here, I left very satisfied with the overall food quality and service. As the dinner menu was 6-7 courses long, the smaller portions were perfect and left me pleased. The Veloute served was absolutely amazing and one of my favorite courses out of the entire night. I savored every sip and was one of the dishes I absolutely wanted a large bowl of. The new season asparagus was also well done and I had no complaints as the Iced Granite palette cleanser served its purpose well by providing a nice transition to the main course. The challans duck course was absolutely fabulous. I haven't had a duck cooked that perfectly in a while and the purees went amazing with it. My favorite part of this dish was the duck leg confit and I practically savored every bite. I was also not disappointed by the desserts! The banoffi sundae tasted amazing and capped off the entire meal well. To indulge further, I had coffee and the Petit Fours chocolates were nice to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the place. The actual restaurant was also fabulous and had a really great atmosphere. It was never too quiet or too loud and the lighting was perfect. The service was top-notch and was the sole reason why I gave this place 5 stars. Based on food & price, I would've normally given a 4. However, everyone from the hostess to our waiter and the manager were all extremely courteous and on-point with any accommodations we needed. I was completely happy with the level of professionalism they carried as well as impressed with the all their knowledge on the food they served. I would definitely recommend this fine restaurant as an anniversary, celebratory occasion or an excellent place for someone special. While the prices may be high, the food and service has made this a special restaurant to return to in Dublin. read more
