I booked a 2:00pm loc maintenance service. The service was listed at $150 and I had to pay $112 deposit through Booksy to confirm the appointment. I called the salon to make sure they had received the appointment and the person who answered asked for me to arrive at 4:00pm instead of 2:00pm. I adjusted my schedule and arrived at 4:00pm. When I arrived both women were busy braiding other customer's hair, and they both had recently started on other customers so they had a while to go until they were available to do my hair . So I waited for 2 hours for them to wash my hair. The lady washed and twisted my hair. She did an okay job. When she was done she said the wash was $80 and the retwist was $150. She charged me a total of $230. She said she never received the deposit, which I don't believe because the money was removed from my bank account. Even when I showed her in my bank app that the money was removed she said she never received it. What a scam! Every other salon that I have ever been to includes a wash with a retwist except this place. Nowhere on their website does it indicate that it costs $80 for them to wash someone's hair. This place is a complete and total rip off! They are dishonest and had absolutely no regard for my time. Now I'll have to file a dispute with my bank to receive my $112 deposit back that they claim they didn't receive. Never again will I patronize this "business". You have been duly warned. Just recently I made the mistake of trying to use another braider in Oakland who canceled last minute due to a medical emergency she had. While in Oakland, I called Martine. She immediately called me back. I explained that I would be traveling the following week and I desperately needed my hair done. What did Martine do? I love my box braids from Victoria! It was my first time getting braids for Burning Man, and I was definitely nervous about how it would turn out. I made my appointment several weeks in advance. Martine let me come in for an initial consult, and later on to assess a few of the hair packs I bought on Amazon. I'm naturally dirty blonde with blonde balayage, and I was hoping for a more natural color or ombré for my braids. However, I had a hard time finding light enough natural colors at the beauty supply shops in SF and on Amazon. The packs I ended up buying were chestnut (much warmer than my natural color), blonde and burgundy. I soaked them in vinegar the night before to minimize itch. When I arrived at my appointment, I mentioned to my stylist that I was worried about the colors blending with my own hair. Before starting the braiding process, Victoria actually took all three colors and blended them together to create a beautiful multidimensional look. I think this was absolutely the key to my braids color turning out so well! When you are deciding how small you want your braids, take into consideration how much hair you have, the texture, and also the texture of the hair you bought. I have a lot of hair but it's very fine and slippery, which contributed significantly to the braid time. My braids took a whopping 9.5 hours, and Victoria was incredibly kind to me the entire time. I can't thank her enough for her hard work. Definitely come prepared and bring your own food, water, coffee, and snacks to your appointment. Martine ordered pizza in the afternoon and shared it with all of the staff and customers. There is also a water cooler at the shop. The shop accepts cash only, and there is an ATM at the convenience store at the end of the block. This place is excellent. The women here are quick and clean. I have extremely thick, passed my shoulder length, 4b/4c natural hair and Ive never spent more than 5 hours in a chair here. I recently got kinky twist and it was the fastest hair braiding experience I have ever had. My appointment was at 9:00 and the ladies started around 9:10ish. I was in my car, seat belt buckled and keys in the ignition by 12:00... they completed the braiding by 11:30 and the dipping was done about 15 min later. Another time I got long individual braids before going on a two week trip in Thailand. The braids took 5 hours and stood up beautifully through the 14 days in swimming pool and ocean water... Every time I come here I get compliments. The women are very nice and friendly and they play Nollywood movies (which is an added bonus if you're into it). They charge the going rate for braids, and it's worth every penny... They're gracious to whatever tip you leave (but tip well because they deserve it!) I had Senegalese twists done here about 6 weeks ago. The good: My twists looked REALLY good; A+ for the style I received. I have gotten so many compliments on this hair! Service was fast. It usually takes 11+ hours to twist my hair, but the lady who did mine finished in about 7. The ladies were friendly and fun. The lady twisting my hair was very careful about my edges and made sure she wasn't twisting too tight. The bad: This place is cash only - which isn't inherently bad; however, I was not told this when I booked my appointment. Thus, after finishing my hair, I had to awkwardly explain that I didn't have cash and leave my belongings there so I could go get some. My twists were not sealed properly and I had 15+ unravel. When I texted the owner about it, she was very quick to respond and work with me on scheduling a time to come in. I scheduled an appointment for later that week at 2pm, lightly saying that my schedule was pretty open that day. On that day at around noon, she called me a few times and then texted me asking if I could come in then. I said no, but I could come in at my scheduled time. She responded, "Why? You said you don't have anything to do today and we finished early so we want to leave." I really did not like her attitude. Had my hair been sealed properly in the first place, I would not need to come back at all, which I feel is far more inconvenient for me, the customer who paid hundreds of dollars for her hair, than the ladies who want to leave an hour or two early. She ultimately moved my appointment to a different day. I found this part of this experience extremely unprofessional. It made me feel very uncomfortable. As good as it gets. Timing: Appointment was for 3, and we got started at 4. This is not unusual for braid shops, so I was prepared and unbothered. I grabbed a snack down the street and popped an IBUPROFIN (tender-headed gal right here) before we got started. Duration: 4 hours. Yes. Only 4 hours for what should have taken 8-11. Seriously. I have hair for days, and I wanted small twists. I had at least two women working on my head at a time, and at some points, three. They were swift, efficient, patient with my head, gentle where I'm tender, and produced quality twists. Style: My photos are for Senegalese twists, small. We used RastAfri kinky hair, which was new for me. I usually get X-pression, but Martine recommended I get kinky hair to protect the quality and lifetime of the hairstyle. She was so right. I can already tell these will stay quality for way longer than my other twists. My hair is soft and sleek, so extensions are usually quick to come loose. This style with this hair is locked in. I am so happy about that. Also, this hair is actually the lightest weight hair I've probably ever had. My neck is not at all sore. I can pull all the hair up in a top knot and its not heavy at all. Amazing! Experience: Small shop. One main room with a smaller backroom area. My afternoon appointment coincided with the People's Court and Judge Judy, which I was happy about. I love the judge shows! Once the news came on, I put my headphones in and listened to a couple podcasts. The woman are friendly. Mostly spoke to each other in their mother tongue with a mixture of English words sprinkled in here and there. This was perfect for me. I'm not a huge talker and I'd rather lose myself in the podcast to take away from the tugging at my scalp. I am very tender-headed. I apologized like 1,000 times, but they seemed totally unbothered. I was so grateful for their patience. There was many a twist that I had to pinch with my fingers to relieve the tug, and they didn't mind that at all. Price: I love that they are upfront and clear about pricing. No wondering or negotiating prices. They have a little cardboard sheet with different sized braids, lengths, and prices. You know what you're going to pay when you sit down, and I am here for that transparency. For my hair, I paid $250, plus hair. So, it wasn't cheap, but I'll tell you this. I paid for a quality hairstyle and a quality experience, and that is exactly what I got. This style will stay in for months, and I was in and out out of there so quickly. Overall: Will return, absolutely. Will recommend to friends and family, absolutely. Will recommend to you, fellow Yelpers who are looking for a braid shop. It had been many years since I had my hair braided for Burning Man and the place I went to back in the early 2000's has closed. I was hopeful in finding L'Elegance from the reviews here on Yelp. I have found my new braiding salon! This is the third one I've been to since moving to San Francisco a little over 8 years ago. The first here in San Francisco, and the most recent one in Oakland. My appointment was for 9. I called because the salon I'd been going to had promised twice to call me back about making an appointment, and they never did. I had to get this head done because I'm going on a trip in a few weeks, and I didn't want to have to worry about my thick, coarse hair! I found L'Elegance on Yelp and realized they're close to me! No more trekking to Oakland. They called me the day before to confirm. That's never happened. I'm usually calling multiple times to make sure that they still have my appointment. Monica and Sareba (sorry, if I got that wrong!) started on my hair at 9:30, after brushing out every pack of hair. I've never seen anyone do that. And maybe that helps them speed braid, because...MY ENTIRE HEAD WAS DONE IN 3 HOURS!! Unheard of. I've had more than one person working on my head before, and even then, it's always been 6+ hours. Either they're too slow, or they stop or they're too busy talking. These ladies are pros! We watched TV and some music videos and they were done! I had snacks, a book, and an iPad charged and ready to go! I was confused when they were done. 9:30am-12:30pm, and I was out the door a little after that.
