I was visiting for work and staying nearby when we stumbled upon this spot for a late dinner around 10pm--they're open late, which was a plus. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. When we asked to sit outside, the server firmly said no, even though others were seated there, and offered no explanation. Throughout the meal, he wasn't overtly rude but definitely gave the vibe that we were an inconvenience. We ordered a beer and a glass of wine, but he brought two beers instead. He acknowledged the mistake and swapped one for wine, but when we reviewed the bill later, we were still charged for both beers and the wine. I reached out to the restaurant about it and haven't received a response. The food itself was fine--nothing special, nothing terrible. Stopped for a quick breakfast at this cute French Brassiere, Smocked Salmon Bagel was delicious, service was good , interesting menu with classic French dishes. Looking forward to visiting again and try more dishes. Originally I gave 4 stars across the board We came back two weeks later for lunch . Tried some more dishes... Escargot , Frog Legs and Beef Tartare . Unfortunately it was not the best experience, service took forever , dishes came out cold, when dishes came out it was no utensils on the table and it took another 5 to 10 minutes to get someone attention , it was disappointing , Bottom line after first visit we were looking forward to another dining experience but it went down the hill. When we communicated this issue to the staff they replied, we are extremely busy today... Should that be an excuse ??? I am sorry but NO there is absolutely no excuse for cold food and slow service. Not sure when this happened but French cuisine is fire all over the city! We've tried so many awesome restaurants but for some reason we always end up back here. Their Onion Soup is SO good and their Murray's Chicken served with either fries (my fav) or mashed potatoes is incredible!!! The staff is always welcoming and friendly. Like ALL of the staff is nice. Daughter & I had dinner there last night prior to going to a theater nearby. Had an early reservation & was taken in promptly. Weather was a little crazy and the humidity was up. Unfortunately it seems no one in the restaurant knew this & the air was just as uncomfortable inside! Now onto the food--pre- dinner cocktails were fine- some kind of orange liqueur, spritz of club soda among a few other things. My app was the onion soup, which you would expect to be great at a French place. Unfortunately it was so-so. Had the requisite ingredients but no real "oomph" to the taste. Daughter had the salmon appetizer which looked good- think it was ok. I had the beet salad for my main- beets didn't taste the freshest & the Roquefort cheese mousse was nowhere to be found. Even though the dinner was "meh" we shared flourless chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert- also had 2 decaf cappuccinos. Dessert was much better than dinner, as were the cappuccinos. Very disappointed since my last visit less than a month ago. My friend and I looked forward to another good experience and meal, very let down. We both ordered the same thing and both came out undercooked and not what we asked for. While these things happen, we put aside and waited about 10 minutes to get someone's attention to cook it more. We got them back and were fine, however I had a few bites and put mine aside to take home while my friend finished hers. I waited another 10/15 minutes for someone to come over to ask for a to go container, no one did..so I asked a bus boy walking by and told him to bring me one. No one came back, maybe a misunderstanding. In the meantime I was having a conversation with my friend and turned around and my food was gone! I figured maybe took it to wrap but that was not the case. Everyone was scrambling around not knowing what happened until the manager came over and said he took it and threw out. I was dumbfounded..usually one says..are you done? Now here is where I was quite taken..he said he would give me a discount..what? So much time went by and my friend was finished, I did not want anything further..I said please take off the check..I could not believe I had to say it and with that, not even an offer for a drink or bring a dessert to make an unpleasant experience better. It took about 20 minutes to even get a check..we were being completely ignored and suddenly the manager avoided us, not even a word when we left. Then when it is time to order food you will not be disappointed. The Escargots de Bourgogne are very good. I then had the cassoulet which I think is fantastic. Place pretty empty so very quiet and just what we were looking for given that we went with our baby in the stroller (if packed, that would ve impossible to get in) We were seated at the table but the closed entrance door, so had space fo the stroller which were nice. The seating is pretty crowded, so were thankful. Had eggs with salmon, quiche, the croissant basket and a couple of coffees. Croissants were delish. Really, really good all them but above all, the chocolate one. Please order it. Quiche of the day was yum really good, warm and soft. Flavourful. Omelette was ok. Salmon portion blended in it was ok. Came here for dinner with family. The food was pretty good, slightly on the saltier side in my opinion. The frog legs and octopus were probably my favorite dishes. The menu is on the pricier side for not that much quantity. If you wanted to get the short ribs, be ready to only have a few small pieces of meat in a lot of sauce. The servers were really friendly, but we waited for a very long time to get our food. They did give us many rounds of bread during our wait because we were so hungry, but it took over an hour to get our appetizers and then our entrees. I got the French onion and she got the clam chowder soup of the day. We both enjoyed it and found it really filling and we also shared rosemary fries, which were really good And finished it with sharing a slice of cheesecake that was a perfect portion for two people. The place was a little warm for me and quite loud but I was still able to have a conversation and it wasn't uncomfortable in jeans and a T-shirt. The entrées were a bit expensive. L'Express is a bistro right out of Paris!! It's cozy (and a little crowded), bustling, and has all the classics!! Like most bistros, the meal is great because of the entire experience and because the menu has exactly what you crave. It may not be the best meal you've had, but it's perfect for a cold night, a casual catch up, or a light bite with some wine. The mussels I had were perfectly cooked (and paired well with the bread and fries!). I also really enjoyed the special Carrot & Parsnip soup, which was a unique flavor I had never had before. Tips are not the mandatory and being calculated based on quality of service. We ate at L'express about 10 years ago and never went back due to average food and decided to re-try it upon learning a new chef revamped the menu. The hostess was polite and accomodating when we asked to switch tables away from a family with a child that was incessantly banging a spoon on the table...the parents were too busy getting drunk to intervene in their offspring's behavior...entitled parents betraying the social contract of ensuring non-disruptive behavior from their kids seems par for the course in NYC these days and is not L'express's fault. The waitress was also polite if not overly perky, but didnt really do anything when I found a sizable bone in our pork croquettes, which taste wise, was unoffensive but uninspired: She said: "Oh no, that's terrible, I hate that for you".... and then zero follow up on the issue. No discount, no comp, no tableside visit from the manager or chef. We were perplexed. If you hate that for me, do something about it. Don't charge me money for the honor of endangering my teeth and or life. We had lamb burgers that were fine. Again, unoffensive but uninspired. We decided we will not go back. There are superior places in the city for French food that cost the same. read more

I had dinner for one at 9 pm on a Sunday night. Service was quick and friendly. I enjoyed a refreshing St. Germain spritz and a perfectly cooked entree of striped bass with ratatouille. This was the worst dinner I have had in my time living in New York City. We went at 6:30pm on a Saturday night. The hostess was amazing and was able to accomiodate us. We called early in the evening asking for a walk in and were sat immediately. After we sat we waiting 12 minutes before flagging someone to find our server. We both ordered the steak, had soup, wine and a side...not being cheap on the meal. We again had to flag someone down for the wine. The steak was overcooked and side of broccolini was too spicy to eat. Our server never came to our table to check on us. The water servers were great and extremely attentive, they were able to help us get our server. They helped to box up the food. We sat with To-Go boxes on our table for 10 minutes before flagging our server...again. He leaned on our table and said "Yes?" as if we were asking too much, we needed the check! We were offered bread for the table and several of us ordered the Steak Frites, amongst other specials like the Lamb Burger, the chicken cordon Bleu, and Mushroom Ravioli. My steak arrived medium rare with gravy on the side, which is exactly what I requested. The steak was well seasoned and tender. Afterwards, we ordered an assortment of desserts that were quite good, like the flan. The four is for the good enough ambience which, as I thought, was conducive enough for me to write. The service was great by the waitress and at least one of two busboys. (The younger one had a sour expression.) If you put energy in the food, a boiled egg can be better than anything a "gourmet" can make. Although I've eaten in enough places, the best I have had is Greek food. You don't need many sauces. The best piece of tomato I had was in Greece and best French fry haha was at Saint Demetrios in Jamaica, Queens. French food makes me go to the bathroom a lot right after I eat and often, as it did today. I was in the mood for it and curious about this place, as I told myself I'd go after returning from Greece. I had chicken and mashed potatoes, something I can make at home. It was a bit undercooked but good enough. I thought the pear dessert would have a whole pear, as the dessert in the great movie I just saw The Taste of Things, had. (That food, except for the skate and I think it was sweetbreads yuck, seemed great.) The dessert was a bit too dense, perhaps due to too much butter, and was not the same temperature throughout. I had asked for a piece of tomato and a baby carrot with the plate. The chef refused. Yes, a baby tomato, baby onion, and baby carrot, or something similar would have made the plate more complete in terms of taste, palet balance, and texture. My stomach would have been more steady afterward. The customer is right and the chef does not know the "right" way to eat a piece of chicken and mashed potatoes. I was also told the plate was two breasts which I prefer, but was a breast and thigh. The incident reminds me of a Brooklyn incident where a French owner thought I committed murder because I wanted cinnamon for my cappuccino. (whipped cream is good too.) This is normal in Greece and Italy. And at least I don't have the runs after that food. read more

Eden wanted to celebrate her birthday at L'Express where she often went with her late husband and had fond memories. So a few weeks ago we went there. Eden enjoyed her frittata with salmon. Carole had a French onion soup. I ordered the burger with fries as I had often admired it when seeing customers eating it when I passed by. Mine was the only entrée that was lackluster. The meat had no flavor unlike the stellar one at Au Cheval and the fries were not crisp. Eden polished the panna cotta which was served with strawberries and raspberry jam in the middle. My apricot tart was not a tart but a mushy cake with no aromatics in the apricots. Both vanilla or almond extract would have heightened the flavor immensely.
