I arranged an NYU happy hour event here and it was fairly easy to do so. Although it's pretty tight inside, especially since they were showing the World Cup matches, we were giving the space in the back, which fit our 12 guests. Keep in mind, parties over 6 have a $65 minimum spend. I tried an orange wine (I forget which one since it was recommended by the bartender). It was nice and dry and hit the spot. This is one of my favorite places to casually drop in because of the atmosphere. It is very lively and the real candle lights create a great vibe at night. I've been to the upper west side location and I'd suggest that one for more of an intimate and romantic ambiance. I'd always suggest making a reservation since they do get pretty busy, but they've always had some availability when I've come here in a party under 4 people. The food here is really good and they have a great daily happy hour. Some of my favorite things here are the wine flights, mussels, escargot and burger. The wine flights are a great way to try multiple different wines. The white wine sauce for the mussels and the garlic/parsley butter and puff pastry on the escargot are also very good. I do love that many of the dishes like the mussels, goat cheese, and chicken liver mouse come with a good amount of bread. Their chicken liver mouse is very smooth and a generous helping. It comes with additional things on the side that really complete the dish. The burger is cooked exactly the way you like it and the fries are perfect and crisp. The Russian hill cocktail was surprisingly really sweet. The service is usually very attentive. They do get really busy and can vary depending on where you sit. But the food and drinks always come in a timely manner. I've been to their upper west side location and also had a really good experience there. Reservation for 2 at 8:00 on a Monday. 1 hour 45 minutes for 3 courses, having to call over the waiter twice because of delay. Ordered ($26!) burger medium rare and it arrived cooked through with an inexplicable thick charred exoskeleton. Quality control clearly not in effect as I honestly felt scandalized that they would even put it in front of me. I sent it back and they were apologetic but attempt 2 was only meh. We stumbled upon this charming bistro after watching a show nearby. I was in the mood for some food while my dining party wanted some drinks and snacks, and this turned out to be the perfect spot for us. Been to Amelie's on several occasions -- for brunch, for small bites & drinks -- and during various seasons. It's near my place, so that makes it convenient, but aside from that, it's an all-around reliable French bistro type of vibe, and the establishment has been accommodating when requesting substitutions and menu alterations. My only pain point is that it's a big on the cramped side, but that's a function of Manhattan spaces in general. Overall thumbs up. read more

Amelie is a French wine bar with a few different locations. It's a place worth trying but I don't think I would go back. The things I loved were the Goat Cheese Ball, Baked Camembert, and gooey and delicious Chocolate Fondant Cake (aka chocolate lava cake). I was quite let down by the Ravioli (lacking flavor) and Brussels Sprouts (a bit too tangy). As far as wine selections go, I prefer a sweeter wine but they don't do much of that here, so the Prosecco was my choice. Brought my dad here for father's day! He wanted french cuisine, which isn't our typical go-to. It was surprisingly easy to make a reservation (note they do charge you a $20 no show fee per person or if u cancel without giving 1 hour's notice!) You have the option of sitting inside or outside, though some of the tables outside are a bit wonky / slanted. The service was nice and attentive, and we were able to get extra bread throughout the evening (which was super delicious!) We got three appetizers (including a salad), and I highly recommend the beef tartare. It was delicious and well flavored. We also got three mains to share. I was bummed they didn't have the duck leg confit special, which many people have raved about, I think the favorite of the table of what we ordered were the steamed mussels and PRO TIP the leek and mussels broth at the bottom is delicious and makes for an amazing broth to dip the bread into!! I was underwhelmed by the chicken leg cooked in red wine entree, as well as the hanger steak (although the french fries on the side were delicious). It was nice to try and this spot seems to be a staple in the village, but I'm not sure I would go again just given some of the entree misses and the fact that it was fairly pricey (about $50 per person at the end). read more

Overall: Amelie always comes up as a top Yelp recommendation - I was excited to try it. The food was good but not spectacular. The wine and atmosphere were great. It's definitely a place I would come back to for their happy hour, but there are other food options nearby that I'd try before doing dinner again. Value: I thought the drinks were very reasonable, though they lacked some options on the cheaper end. Some of the food options seemed slightly overpriced for what they are, but they weren't wildly out of place for NYC. Atmosphere: This was a great place for a date. It was lively and had a fun atmosphere without being too loud - you could still hear each other talk. We have been here twice and loved each time! Perfect if you want to have a nice date night or fun catch up with friends. We haven't tried the meals but certainly enjoyed the small bites (beef tartar) and wine selection (flights: Jules, Yaris). My friend got a glass of red wine, it was a large glass and heavy pour so I'd recommend that over a flight. She also got a salad and asked for grilled salmon and the waiter repeated that back. Yet, the salad came with smoked salmon (lox) and then they said that they couldn't change it.
