When we come to Rome, we always come here to eat. Why, you ask? Because the food, the prices, and the service are consistently good. They have an extensive menu. There is something for everyone here. Their prices are very reasonable. They offer seating inside or out. They are open all day so that they can accommodate everyone. On this trip, we both enjoyed the Ravioli with butter and sage sauce. I grew up coming to this place and happy to see that even after 15 years their quality of food is still incredible! Great spot in near the colosseum area. In my teens I used to always come here for their pastas. 15 years later, I didn't try the pasta but went with their fried calamari for appetizer and green pepper steak for my entree. We were just here last week on our last day of an Italian and European vacation. We ended up here because the place, literally next door, seated my wife and I and then totally ignored us. They left us sitting outside at a table for over fifteen minutes and just forgot about us apparently. For a period of time, when my sons were teens, it was impossible to mention an ethnicity - any ethnicity - in any context, without one of them responding "racist". As such, the irony didn't escape me when my now 23-year old son remarked, after lunch at L'Insalata Ricca, "let's eat the rest of our meals at 'Italian' places". He may have been referring to the fact that we'd lunched on salads, untraditional Italian fare, or he may have been referring to the fact that the staff here doesn't appear or sound traditionally Italian; they're Italian by way of another country. Whatever he was referring to I couldn't resist my response, "racist". His intent - I'll assume he meant the former - mattered little though, as a good salad is good regardless of who serves it or where it's served. My airbnb host had put the chain cafe, L'Insalata Ricca, on his list of recommendations noting "good salads" beside it. He did not lie. Their salads are well composed, tasty, plentiful, reasonably priced, and satisfying. As a Cali girl existing on traditional Italian fare for 2+ weeks by this point, a menu featuring this many salads was like manna from heaven. L'Insalata Ricca is a good choice for a good salad. It might not fit your definition of "Italian Restaurant" and there may be a bit of upsell by your waiter, but ignore those things and you'll be rewarded with a most satisfying lunch. If I had all the time in the world to eat at "Italian" restaurants I imagine I'd lunch here quite frequently. read more

We stopped here to have lunch after the visiting someplace or another in Rome, I know we were on our way to a fabric store when we stumbled upon this place. I had seen in many other restaurants before "tourist menus" but I've never tried it. We did so here. It was about $15€ or so, and it consisted in a pasta, salad or pizza dish, a meat item. Wine or soft drink and coffee. I had a salad, pasta, a bruschetta bread, coffee and wine. I didn't get the meat entrée because I had quit ordering meat a couple of days prior so they allowed me to get both a salad and pasta. The pasta was so good! I live their sauce. I thought I would only have a bite, but I ate it all. Everythings was great. We sat outside, and although there isn't a great view, other than a busy street, it still felt pretty nice just to be out there. enjoying the breeze. My husband and I decided to come here on our last night in Italy and it was not a good choice. We had to get up really early for a flight back to the United States the next morning and thought we'd stop in for a quick bite before retiring to our hotel room to rest up. The place was super busy with a lot of people seated which is often what attracts us to a place. It must be good if there is a crowd right? We had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated which was expected and totally fine with me. After seated, it was as if we were not seen or even there. It took over 10 minutes for a waiter to come and ask what we wanted to drink. Again, I was forgiving as this place was hoppin'. Our still water and beer did not come right away. We indeed waited near 10 minutes more for them to arrive to the table. We were not given an option to order upon the arrival of the drinks and had to wait for the waiter to come back after waiting on another table first. He returned and took our order and was far from welcoming. It took 30 minutes for our food to arrive to the table. I ordered pizza and my husband ordered seafood pasta. The food was actually pretty good and I was not upset about the wait to receive it at that point. The waiter didn't return to our table after we were served until 30 more minutes went by despite our drinks gone and our dishes empty. We were concerned for time and knew we needed to get up early so we called across the restaurant to ask for the check since he wasn't coming by our table. He nodded and acknowledged us and agreed to bring the ticket. I am not exaggerating when I say that 10 more minutes went by before we even saw him again. He walked right past while he took another order from another table and even brought food to another. As he was walking back through I said " we are in a hurry, can we please have the ticket?" to which he replied "ticket, yes" and was off once more. At this point I am getting pretty upset. I have never dined and dashed before but considered it after reminding a 3rd time for the ticket and waiting 25 more minutes to get the ticket so we could pay for our meal. We waited for our ticket to come for over 35 minutes all while staring at the empty dishes in front of us attracting flies. I was so upset and still have no idea why it took so long to get us the ticket but it finally came and I was more than happy to leave after 2+ hours of sitting there. I would have given the rating 1 star if the food wasn't as good as it was. Based on my experience though, not even the good food would get me to return to this place. read more

We stopped here for lunch today and were overheated and hungry after wandering the streets of Trastevere. Not only was the server kind and helpful, but he brought us two bowls of ice for our drinks to help us cool down. We ordered an avocado salad, pizza fungi, marinara pizza, and pesto trofie pasta. We all decided it was one of the best meals in Italy we have eaten over the past 10 days. The salad was hands down the best salad I've had because it actually had a light homemade dressing, which I appreciated because no one dresses salads here - at least where we have traveled in Italy. I don't know what it is but I truly enjoy L'insalata ricca. This place serves everything from steak and chicken, to pizzas and pastas. What they're known for, however, is their salads. There's well over twenty different types of salads on the menu, and while I'm no where close to having tried them all, I can tell you about the ones I have tasted. My favorite salad hands down is the chicken salad. Over a bed of crisp lettuce and arugula is served grilled chicken, potatoes, raisins, celery, and carrots. Dressed with a little bit of olive oil and salt this is a tasty and light meal you're sure to enjoy. Each salad is served with a plate of fresh bread slices dusted with salt and herbs. If you're against loud, noisy atmospheres, then go home and stay out of Rome, but if you're into the ambiance of the city, then L'insalata Ricca is a good jumping off point to immerse you in the culture. After days of binging on pasta, bread and pizza a fresh salad was a must! The portions are large and come in a big bowl which is every salad lovers dream. However, they skip on the ingredients. The Pilgrim has apples, walnuts, blueberries, chicken and Brie (delicious combo) but there were very few blueberries and nuts. Maybe four of each. My sisters salad was lacking as well. I believe all salads are under 10 euro so we felt it was an okay deal for the price. Either way it was a refreshing change of pace. This was the first restaurant I went to when I got to Rome! It was convenient for my apartment mates and I because they closed at midnight. They accommodated 8 girls pretty easily and we all ordered wine! Their white house wine had an off yellow color which made me question it a little. It was more carbonated than usual and had more of a beer-feel to it. Still good for house wine though! Most of us ordered pizzas. Stupid me, I ordered a pepperoni pizza thinking I was gonna get "pepperoni" slices. Instead I got a pizza with red bell peppers lol. It was still pretty good, regardless. The portions were huge and I didn't finish my pizza but the waiter was kind enough to pack it for us to go! I also tried their ham pizza which was pretty good also. The pesto pizza is basically pesto and cheese. These pizza were pretty basic compared to what I'm used to in America. But I guess that's because it is legit Italian styled pizza. After that the people next to us bought a pitcher of white wine for us and we got a little buzzed from it! The restaurant is located just a block from Piazza Nuvona on Largo dei Chiavari The menu includes about 20 salads at reasonable prices and they are good sized. My wife made a meal of one of them. He even gave us a free bruschetta with salmon, because we were cautious about the types we wanted. The bruschetta was delicious!
