It's a no-brainer to give L'Opossum 5 stars, because it is easily the best food in Richmond, and a truly inventive, pleasing dining EXPERIENCE. When you walk in, the decor is the first thing that strikes you: it is almost like walking in to a parallel twilight zone; it's so... unique, I can't even describe it. The lighting is gorgeous and depthy, the tables are ADORABLE and very pretty, and the artwork and decor is just the perfect mix of bizarre, intriguing and beautiful, that the place just generally gives you a feeling like no other restaurant. (It's very difficult to explain, so you'll just have to go see for yourself!) The wait staff is impeccable; you will never have to ask for refills or more bread or dishes, as small dishes come out all the time, they will always come around with a fresh piece of bread (their homemade butter is bonkers!) and the bar is in such a convenient location to the tables, they can keep a good eye on whether you need another drink or not.
For my mixed drink (you have to try their drinks! They're inventive, masterfully crafted, but be warned- they are VERY strong!) I had the Hooty Hoo!, which was a White Russian with Yoohoo chocolate drink, xiocatl bitters (intense South American dark chocolate,) nutmeg, an incredibly smooth vodka and a rim of delectable black lava salt. It's hard to compare this to any other White Russian, because it really stands alone with its incredibly unique flavor marriages.
L'Opossum does a masterful job of taking very standard gourmet dishes (such as a chicken, a lamb, a steak, etc.) and elevating them to true originality. I had the mesclun salad to start, and the grapefruit/avocado dressing I ended up spooning up (you will spoon up any remaining sauce on any dish, here.) and the spicy goat cheese pate at the base of the salad (which was packaged in a slightly charred, peppered slice of cucumber,) was easily the greatest, most flavorful goat cheese I've ever had.
Prepare to dine in for like three hours, here (it's worth it,) as the food is constructed like a fine work of art, and the wait between dishes is pretty extensive, but bring good company and enjoy the atmosphere, and take in the moment and you will have an amazing time! For an entree I had the Coq au Morocco, which was SUPERB! (Which I think is still too light of an adjective to describe this incredibly flavorful, juicy, perfectly, intricately and depthily sauced and seasoned chicken dish, with easily the best cous cous I've eaten, as well as their raita, which was so popping with flavor I've never had in a yogurt sauce before- let's just say, any dish you get, don't expect to have ever tasted these flavors before. I mean, the undertones with just the right amount of harissa gave it a slight salt n' spice kick that lingered in the most pleasant way. It's something completely new, and I was picking every tiny sliver of chicken off the bone, because it was impossible to leave anything behind; the portions are just perfect, here, as well.
For dessert, I had the Apple Tarte, which was like an upside-down, dense apple pie, and let me say: PHENOMENAL. Some of the most flavorful, impossible-to-put-down apple anything I've ever had, and the buttermilk creme fraiche mixed with a smooth caramel undertone was nigh-drinkable (spooned the rest of that up, as well!) I have not had food, or a dining experience, or been to a place like this, perhaps ever, and not only will I be back, I can not be back soon enough! This was a very memorable experience and actually very reasonably priced for "gourmet." Everything I had was about $63, which is very good for the quality. Trust me, I can't begin to imagine how you could be disappointed by ANY facet of L'Opossum. Go. Go NOW! You're missing out, otherwise.
**I apologize for my picture quality (but you can get the IDEA.) I tried the best I could; the lighting is so odd, it's impossible to get a clear picture. I have no idea how some of the others did it!** read more
