I love this place so much―I really need to find the time to drop by more often. I came in with a group of friends who were visiting for the weekend. We had the foie gras and venison for appetizers, then I ordered "The Swank Bank" as my main course. All the food was amazing, I think the whole table was dead silent every time a dish came out because we just wanted to focus on each plate. The cocktail menu was great as well―a good amount of variety and the staff was very knowledgeable/friendly when seeking a recommendation. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

As everyone writes, this place is RVA's finest! Had a great time there, there was no rush of our party of 6 - they let us stay and enjoy the total experience. Server was great - explained everything and was attentive. I wish the drinks had been quicker when we sat down but that was just because i was ready to have a cocktail! Food was amazing, everyone one enjoyed the experience. Reservations are hard to come by so do yourself a favor and book weeks/months in advance for what you want and you will be good to go. William the waiter was the warmest, absolutely exceptional. Snd then the food...Had escargots as a starter, they were so tender and the buttery biscuit with a creamy sauce that accompanies them is just phenomenal. Scallops that I had as the main were the freshest, juiciest and by far the biggest scallops I had in my life! The pork belly they came with melted in my mouth and the crispy beans serve as a fantastic contrast. The chocolat au mort was just the perfect way to finish this amazing meal, it was so indulgent. Not my grandfather's possum and taters. This is an eccentric French bistro. Great food. I had a cold asparagus onion soup. Possibly the best I have had. For my main course I had the deconstructed "beef Wellington". Also delicious and large portion. The Chef, David Shannon, can cook! Only negative was the limited wine selection, but what they had was very good. No half bottles. Located in a Richmond neighborhood (Oregon Hills). They accommodated me at the last minute. We were excited to see if this place lived up to its 5 star rating. It most definitely did! We arrived a few mins after our reservation (4th of July parking yay) and our booth was still occupied by a couple thoroughly enjoying their meal. We sat at the bar and ordered some cocktails and were promptly seated. We shared the venison carpaccio and escargot appetizers. The venison was incredible. I felt biased because it is a hunter's delicacy, but my date had it for the first time and loved it. The snails were pretty meaty and already out of their shells. We loved them. I had the crab cakes and my date had the pork chop/steak combo. His portions were kind of small *compared to most dining portions* but my crab cakes were large. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. As Marylanders we had our doubts about the crab cakes but they passed the test! Very little filler. We were too full for dessert and shared some remorse over the fact. Our server was the best. She was prompt, informative, and accommodating. Even given the fact the place was full. I will be back next time we're in Richmond. By the way, it's about a two block walk to the waterfront. This really is one of the best restaurants in Richmond. It's as simple as that! The waiter was knowledgeable in describing every layer of flavor in each dish. I didn't include the apple tartine, but it was my favorite dessert. The flambe was rich and delicious as well. It took about 6 weeks to get a reservation, but it was well worth the wait. We had a morel mushroom appetizer, lobster Mac & Cheese and the very best filet I've ever tasted. Cooked exactly as requested and perfectly seasoned. The server was extremely knowledgeable about the drink and dinner menus. This is hands down the best dining experience i've had Richmond over the past 5 years i've lived here. I went for my birthday and it was two months out to reserve a table for a Friday on Open Table, but it was well worth the wait. Food, service, and ambiance were impeccable. You walk in and totally forget that you are in little ol' Oregon Hill. It's colorful and dim with lit stained glass globes everywhere. They are beautiful. The waiter had everything down to a T, but in a non-stuffy way. He was dressed casually but recited monologues with colorful vocabulary about each dish that took you through a fun story about the ingredients of the dish, and how it will be cooked for you. He never missed a beat on anything the entire time. We ordered different cocktails, a muscles appetizer, lobster mac to share, and then each of our own dishes. I got the crab cake dish. I seriously believe you couldn't go wrong at this place no matter what you get. Everything had so much detail and care. Can't wait to get to go back. This place is honestly unlike any fancy restaurant I've ever been to. When you walk in there are almost no windows and this almost no light and there are mirrors on all the walls. Every piece of furniture and artwork seems to be handpicked by someone with an eclectic taste and I absolutely loved it. The menu was short which is great for someone as indecisive as me. I asked the waiter to describe one dish as I didn't quite understand what it was and he basically told me a fairy tale about it that was rehearsed, and I was pretty impressed. I ended up ordering the violet femme cocktail and the crab cakes. The drink was tiny and delicious and still got me tipsy because it was hella strong. The crab cakes were like the best crabcakes I've ever had, full of lump and mouthwatering crabmeat and not a whole lot else. If someone wanted to have a super nice and unique dinner and RVA this would definitely be the spot for it. read more

Went with a group and tried almost everything on the menu. The restaurant was interesting with the decor! Not what I expected but still very cool. It's a smaller restaurant but it doesn't get too loud. The appetizers were fantastic. Had the onion dip, faberge egg, grilled Caesar, venison and foie gras. The best was definitely the foie gras and venison. The eggs as interesting... not my favorite. Onion dip was good - if you love onions. Grilled salad was okay... weird taste that I'm guessing is the dressing. For meals, we all split the grouper, chicken, lobster Mac and cheese, lamb chops, pork chops, beef Wellington and crab cakes. The grouper and lamb were my favorites. So much flavor and perfect mix of foods. The crab cake seemed to have shells still in it... Desserts - hot black bottom and Oregon apple were the best things. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was awesome- from the decor down to the menus. Our server, Susan, was extremely knowledgeable, informative, and personable. Super disappointed. I've come here before and had a great time and food but today's experience was completely opposite. Today they were out of one of their 8 entries, the filet minion beef swellington. Both me and my finance had planned on getting this for our 5 year anniversary. Instead I got a WAY over done crab cake for practically the same price (37$ instead of 38). Can't say I'll be back anytime soon if that's what to be expected when placing reservations several month in advance for a special occasion. read more

Food: overall the food was very good and I would certainly come back. Had the deviled eggs, which were unlike any others I've had and I've had lots. They were filled with crab and had caviar on top...sounds weird but they made the flavors work. The grilled Caesar salad was good but nothing super exciting. The ahi main course was very good...seared perfectly and very tender. The slaw and potatoes were a nice accompaniment. For dessert, had the bundt cake with the pineapple and rum and that was delicious! Atmosphere: super cute place, very interesting unique decor, dark and candlelit, nice date place. By far the most seamless experience I've ever had in a restaurant including restaurants in larger cities like San Francisco. One person's vision, materialized on every level here, creates that seamless experience. Everything from the music playlist to the lighting mix create an amazing atmosphere and dining experience. But if you're willing and able to drop some bones - this is a great local place to do it! They are very aware of food allergies and will make sure they can accommodate what you need. Great care is taken with naming and describing the food in the menus. While it can be quite entertaining, sometimes its hard to decipher what you're really getting. But our server was more than happy to answer any questions! The Vegan Orgy app is great for sharing and yummy! We just wished there were a few more chips for dipping. The lobster mac had a generous amount of lobster and was a healthy serving. The halibut was amazing with a sauce that was a perfect power punch of flavor! Simply outstanding!! Maybe the best meal I've had in Richmond since moving here. Lamb chops were beautiful on the plate and extremely tasty. Had soup and apps with a larger group which also was very good. Must say the chocolate lava cake thing was tremendous and I could have licked the plate. Wine was excellent. I'm between a 3.5 and 4 as my overall rating. L'Opossum has been on our radar for the past 2 years and we finally snagged a reservation to celebrate an occasion 2 months prior to going. Yes, that is how far the wait is. So is it worth the hype?...sadly no. Maybe in years past but RVA is now home to dozens of culinary artists with top notch dishes. My husband put it nicely, " I don't like when I dine somewhere that is trying to be more upscale than it really is." We had the venison appetizer, followed by the swank bank for me, and the beef swellington. They were also offering a healthy portion of shaved black truffle on top of these two dishes for a hefty up charge. We both enjoyed our meals but at the end were not satisfied. It left us feeling as we overpaid to "feel" fancy. Glad to have checked it off our bucket list as nothing about the atmosphere or food made us want to return for a second time. read more
