My go to spot for Haitian patties. I always like to buy the fish and the chicken patties.

The space is beautiful and very well decorated, and the servers were kind and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the djon djon rice bowl with oxtail, the fritay platter, and soup joumou, and we also tried the Sunday special with white rice and sos pwa. My dish came out after everyone else's, so I ended up taking it to go, which was disappointing. The fritay platter was a highlight. The plantains were crispy and the akra and marinade were well seasoned. My mom enjoyed her soup, but felt the sos pwa was a bit watery and could have been thicker. When I got home, the rice had a great texture but the aroma smelled slightly burnt, maybe they were going for a smoky flavor. The oxtail was well flavored, but I did find a small piece of plastic in my rice, which was concerning. Overall it was okay, but it did not blow me away. I have had better Haitian food at cookouts or family gatherings, though if this is your first time trying Haitian food, you may enjoy it.

It was my first time trying Haitian food and I was surprised at how similar it was to Spanish food. Every plate we ordered was very flavorful and unique in taste. The sauces that came with our dishes were spicy (just how I like it) but so unique in spice too. I could have drank the sauces. There was nothing that we didn't like! The drinks were also simple, very light and yummy - not too sweet. The vibes of the restaurant were also very cute and dimly lit (but not too dim). They gave us the best seat in the house too - the corner window booth with views of the entire floor. It was a perfect date night! Will definitely be coming back and highly recommend if you're looking to eat some delicious Haitian food!

I was the only customer dining inside the restaurant but several people came to pick up take out orders while I was there. You order from a small window in the back right corner on the restaurant. I went with the fritaille plate with griot ($21) and a passionfruit juice ($3) My food came out quite quickly. Many reviews here mention unpleasant interactions with a male owner. I did not encounter him and was instead served by a woman who was patient and kind. The quantity of food was impressive. I never could have finished this all in one sitting. My plate came with a good portion of griot- fried cubes of pork. The pork is slightly dry and chewy on the exterior, but it's well seasoned and the fatty pieces are juicy and melt in your mouth. The pikliz is acidic and spicy and refreshing as a complement to a plate of heavy, fried food. It also comes with a large sausage, scored before cooking which improved the texture. The sausage was meaty and rich. I also had a large quantity of fried green plantains. These are generally not my favorite thing, but this version was very well cooked and not overly dry inside. My favorite part of the meal was a completely new item for me- Accra. These are long, wedge shaped fritters made of malanga, a starchy root vegetable similar to yucca. They are breaded and deep fried. They came out hot with a crunchy exterior and a soft interior. The texture reminds me of glutenous rice and the flavor is mild. I enjoyed dipping them in the two accompanying sauces. One sauce was acidic and spicy, with a flavor similar to Tabasco. The other came warm and it was rich and savory. It's smooth and blended and seems to made with tomatoes and cooked onions. The passionfruit juice was a great accompaniment to the meal. It was sour and sweet and I found it difficult to not chug it all immediately. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to try Haitian food in the Canarsie area. Although I can not speak to the authenticity, the food was comforting and felt like home cooking. The portion was very large and I certainly felt I got my money's worth.

I can prove my Haitian ethnicity by cooking traditional dishes. The legume was on point! That dish was my favorite. My friend truly enjoyed her salmon. Honestly, I wish I had gotten the salmon to take home instead of the Haitian fried chicken. Now, that wasn't that great to me, and I didn't enjoy it :( I'm still giving them all the stars and all the props because I really appreciated the service. This was my first time trying a Haitian patty with spinach, and it was absolutely fantastic. I think it's even better than the chickpea one. I would definitely highly recommend this place and also go back. But the Haitian fried chicken need to be better. Still, I'll definitely come again and try the salmon next time!!!

I ordered the vegan platter whose black beans were smooth and piping hot, alongside the crispy fried tostones and meaty vegan meatballs. In fact the meatballs were so meat-like that neither my sister nor my husband could belief that they were made of jackfruit. The white rice was also extremely fluffy and moist and judging by the diligent rice-washing that was taking place behind the counter as we ate, I could tell that the staff really works hard to make it not just an afterthought, but a quality addition to the meal. My sister also really enjoyed her shrimp plate while my husband devoured his half-chicken platter. The sauces on our platters were also extremely flavorful, complementing the proteins in a beautiful way. All of us left Lakou Cafe feeling happy and satisfied with the portion sizes and level of quality. 10/10 I will definitely be heading back to this place the next time I'm in Brooklyn!

I got very lucky because these patties literally came straight out of the oven. They were delicious and fresh. The service needs improvement. There is no clear line formed to order. Nice and flaky but not too flaky. Also, there's a decent amount of meat (chicken and beef) inside of them. The total for 3 patties was about $5! Not bad at all! An hour after they claimed to be open, I was then told they had not even started preparing the food yet. I adjusted and told them I would arrive at 12:30, which I did. When I got there, the door was locked. I called and was told to wait another 10 minutes. At that point, I reasonably assumed my order--just six fried meatballs--was already being prepared. However, when I returned after waiting, I was told nothing had been made because I "didn't confirm" I wanted it exactly at 12:30 during the call. This makes absolutely no sense. So the original 30-minute wait time I was given meant nothing, and my order was never even started. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic professionalism is honestly shocking. To make matters worse, the employee was dismissive and walked away from me as if my concerns didn't matter at all. The entire experience felt careless and disrespectful. From the inconsistent opening times to the unprepared staff and rude behavior, this establishment appears disorganized from top to bottom. Even the condition of the place reflects the lack of care put into the business.
