djon djon place is incredible. right away, the decor from the outside is beautiful. though, the food really speaks for itself. i tried the voodoo pasta, and it was honestly amazing. it had chicken, a creamy alfredo-like sauce, and the perfect blend of spices. i highly recommend trying it. the portion size was large, and it was cheesy but flavor was great and not overwhelming. the service was great, and i sat outside where there was a covering overhead. one thing to note is that the lunch and dinner menus are different. overall, i would totally recommend checking out djon djon and definitely wish i had found it sooner. read more

I stopped by for lunch while passing through New York on my way to Philadelphia and decided to meet up with a friend here. My first impression was how spacious the restaurant was. The space is clean, welcoming, and beautifully lit, with several seating options including indoor dining, a covered patio, and sidewalk seating. I appreciated having multiple choices depending on the weather and the vibe you are looking for. Our server, Daphney, was excellent from start to finish. She was attentive, knowledgeable, friendly and helped us navigate the menu with some great recommendations. The drinks were easily a highlight of the meal. Every cocktail we tried was a 5/5. The Citadelle cocktail, Ju Kowosol, and Kremas were all delicious and well-crafted. We got the pate kode as an app, OH MY!! These were a HIT to me! Crispy, thin, and packed with just the right amount of filling. I would absolutely order it again. For our entrées, we ordered the red snapper and the lambi boukannen. Unfortunately, both dishes left something to be desired. I was expecting bolder seasoning and was surprised that the flavors didn't come through more strongly. The fried plantains and rice, however, were both enjoyable and complemented the meal nicely. Overall, the atmosphere, service, and cocktails made for a very enjoyable experience. A gem for the best prepared Haitian food. I've walked past this place for years and finally decided to try it on a random Friday while visiting a nearby cafe. Firstly it was lunchtime and there were a number of tables filled. Looks like it was a lot of nearby lunch goers, good choice! We got a number of recommendations from the waiter after he suggested we try classic dishes but also the fish. Voting that came out was extremely flavorful. Haitians make the best fried fish. You can tell they season the flour and the fish. The gravy was awesome and the black rice and beans was nice n hearty. I brought my leftovers home to my son who devoured it. We also had drinks and those were well made and good as well. This my new Haitian spot. A great spot (albeit slightly pricey) for Haitian food! I made a reservation for three, which wasn't necessary since no other diners were there during our dinner. That had no bearing on our meal, though, which was delicious. The lambi en sauce (conch) with black rice was perfectly stewed and flavorful. The grilled octopus was perfectly seasoned and cooked, with a light crisp on the tentacles. I also liked the lakay spaghetti, which was infused with a tasty and interesting savory flavor from the herring. We got sweet plantains on the side, which were nice and soft and came with a bit of pikliz--a necessity for any Haitian meal. This is a nice place. It's my second time coming here. It's quiet and not too crowded during lunchtime, but it can get busy at night on the weekends. The drink was good, and the food was good too. At Djon Djon you will find fine dining, Haitian decor and a Haitian vibe. I left here wanting to hit a kompa party right away but I have to be honest and say that I was still craving Haitian food. Please note all of the food was well prepared! I started with an appetizer and had the griot sliders. The presentation on the sliders could use a bit of work and perhaps a little more griot? The pikliz that topped off the sliders were definitely authentic and Haitian with just the right amount of spicy. 10/10 Bottle this and I will buy a jar for sure. The griot wasn't remarkable, but good texture. I also tried some of the fried shrimp my friend was having and was pleasantly surprised as I'm often not impressed with shrimp. As a main I had the grilled branzino, which tasted fresh and was plated with veggies on the side. I was expecting to get a hint of Haitian seasoning on the fish and was a bit disappointed. The side of macaroni au gratin I ordered was baked hot ready to order. Again while tasty I felt they played it incredibly safe with the seasoning. Now for the black rice, my friends, get back in the kitchen with this one. Unfortunately not pictured, it was not a hit. Even my Jamaican friend said this is not diri djondjon. What happened here? The tasty krémas will make me forgive you for the rice and I'll be back for more. Please update the rice. Popped in on a whim craving Haitian food with my wife on a Sunday afternoon. The place was very neat and well maintained, and we opted to sit inside and enjoy the atmosphere. Our waitress/bartender/hostess showed us to our table and gave us time to peruse the menu. We started with a mango mimosa and a cocktail, and agreed they both potent, balanced and pleasant. We ordered the Djon Djon Box with goat and the salmon entree. Both were delicious, especially with the pikliz and accompanying sauce. Haitian cuisine features proteins cooked to a firm, well done temperature. But the goat was still tender and pulled off the bone easily. We were slightly disappointed that the black rice or Djon Djon didn't seem to be made with real mushrooms, and looked closer to gray than black. We understand that the mushroom can be a difficult ingredient to source here, but when you make it your namesake - it better be good! This one lacked flavor until we added the sauce and pikliz. Named after the famous black rice of Haiti, Djon Djon is one of the more upscale eateries along Nostrand's Little Haiti corridor. I only sampled the vegetarian items, but I was told by the meat eaters in the group that the blood sausage was phenomenal. The eponymous dish was good with a nice earthy taste from the mushrooms, but I think I prefer a rendition with peas included. The flavors are exceptional. One of my favorite Haitian restaurants. They have a variety of menu options. My favorite is the Lakey spaghetti. I've had it 3 times and it never disappoints me! The wings wow did not think it would be delicious like this, so happyy we got to try that, especially with the green sauce it came with. Coconut shrimp had a sweet and tangy dip. Black rice was a taddd bit dry andthe salmon wasnt super juicy, a bit let down but the stew goat(kabrit en sauce) was goated, yummy and the bean sauce was top tier smooth. Mushroom ravioli lol, my friend was gonna get the voodoo pasta but changed her mind last minute I ate most of mushrooms for her it was tasty and flavorful but definitely a lot of mushrooms so be aware if you arent a mushroom lover, order something else. Drinkss I would drink JUS COROSSOL right now again, I love soursop and coconut milk and so this combo actually was made for me :) Super tasty and worked so well not overly sweet i think. Went to Djon Djon to celebrate Haitian Flag Day and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. We arrived around 7:15 PM with one of my cousins and ordered sliders while waiting for our other cousin to arrive. My other cousin got there around 8:20 PM, and we still hadn't received our appetizer. When we asked about it, we were told it was coming out soon. After speaking with the manager, her response was simply, "Sorry, we have a lot of delivery orders." At that point, we were ready to leave, but since my cousin was still finishing his drink, we stayed a little longer. finally the appetizers came out around 8:35 PM, and sadly, the appetizers were terrible. What made the experience worse was the manager's attitude -- she seemed more concerned about delivery orders than the customers dining in and came across as rude and dismissive. In all my time in NYC all I've ever wanted was a more modern Haitian restaurant experience and this place delivered. We ordered a couple different dishes (lakay fritay, tassot en sauce) to share and everything was excellent. Special shoutout to the lakay spaghetti made with (djon djon??) noodles since I've never been into herring spaghetti growing up. They made it delicious and did a good job overall of making dishes that felt authentic but elevated. In NYC people of the Caribbean diaspora are always debating who makes the best food and honestly the remarks are biased. The decor was authentic, colorful & inviting. There was plenty seating available at 2pm in the afternoon on a weds. I hear the weekend is bustling but come during the week if you want the chill vibe. I am so happy that I traveled to Brooklyn and ate at the restaurant under its new name. It was a well decorated restaurant with vibrant art and beautiful colors. The food was absolutely delicious. We had the grilled Branzino, Djon Djon Box, macaroni gratine, Griot sliders, and legume w/shrimp, and I was impressed. The portions were perfect and shareable.
