This is a really cool place and if you live around this area you MUST come!!! I got a regular latte to try their coffee bean and it was really good and rich in flavor. Their pastries are also delicious. I live so close to this place so I had no issue with parking. But that's the downside to coming to this coffee shop; parking is limited and this is on the 2nd level. I wish they closed late, but I understand that there's not always a lot of activity around here, specially at night. It was the last day of our trip before making the drive back home. I found out about La Barba after reading Food & Wine's article for The Best Coffee in Every State 2019. La Barba was mentioned as the best in Utah, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it. Although the original location downtown has since closed down, we were fortunate enough to be near this location at The Gateway. I had a fresh pour-over of the Ethiopia Banko Gotiti, enjoyed plain black, just the way I like it, and IMHO, the ONLY true way to enjoy coffee. Upon sipping it, I was in awe! This was likely one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. Now, I'm no coffee snob, nor an expert coffee taster. I'm merely a coffee enthusiast starting to develop their pallet for high-quality craft coffee. Additionally, my taste buds might have been confounded from tasting horrible coffee at multiple mass-producing chains for the previous 3 days (the only choice I had on this journey). However, I can confidently say that I savored this cup of coffee that I had. There was an overarching fruity/floral note that I truly enjoyed, but just could not place my finger on, until I read the label. The tasting note said Blueberry, which hit the nail right on the head! That was it! I enjoyed this Ethiopia Banko Gotiti pour-over so much that after returning home to California, I ordered two bags of it from their website. Orders of their bags of coffee come with two free drink tickets. Sadly, I don't know when I'll ever be back in Utah to enjoy my free drinks. Especially given the travel restrictions due to the pandemic. If only they could discount my future online orders instead. Overall, a wonderful coffee shop that lives up to its name and reviews. The newest location of La Barba is a welcome addition at The Gateway! Been waiting for a good coffee shop to join the Gateway party. It's hip and fun and trendy and serves up some quality joe, and is located on the upper level overlooking the fountain area so it's perfect for people-watching and being right in the action. Big concrete blocks and tall barstools inside for seating (but if it gets crowded there are swings and cool tables on AstroTurf outside!) plus pretty copper piping throughout and cute merch areas around the register (their mugs are super cool.) Nice and clean and bright - nice place to meet with friends but not ideal for hunkering down to work. Nice selection of speciality coffees and other drinks like Fentimans sodas, chai and matcha lattes, cold brews. My iced soy vanilla latte was good and welcome on a hot day. Food menu is lovely, with house-made yogurt bowls like mixed berries + jam + maple nut granola + honey, or savory granola + cucumber + olives + tomatoes + sea salt and pepper. Big selection of 11 types of toasts, from a zippy avocado with nori and olive oil to beets with tahini spread and creme fraiche, or sweeter options like Nutella or lemon curd. I live pretty close to their Gateway location and think they have a beautiful space. I wouldn't come here unless I lived within walking distance because parking is tricky, but the coffee is definitely worth it if you are in the area. The space they have is beautiful too and I'd love to sit in in it post-covid (it's currently closed for seating.) Also I'm over all these 1 star reviews about customers being shitty that they were told to keep their mask on. You do realize these baristas have to keep working in that space once you leave ! read more

This is where the Starbucks used to be at the Gateway. The Establishment is very clean and cool and modern... However I'm going to go ahead and say it's not the best coffee I've ever had! And No, I'm not comparing it to Starbucks... Because I also don't think Starbucks is the best coffee I've ever had... I had a nonfat latte, and for as long as it took to make, you would think it would taste very very fresh. However, it tasted burned. The goodies and snacks however seemed very good, my son got a frosted sugar cookie and he loved it! It is very nice inside. I know very few coffee shops in town that goes for the minimalist modern design; it is a trendy looking coffee shop. This location also has a terrace with view to the Gateway's water fall or concerts (if they got any) and there is outer sitting too. I guess it could be good for dates too. La Barba generally is pretty good but this location is going through growing pains. On the plus side: 1) cool and trendy ambiance that took place of an old Starbucks. Much more natural light and open than Starbucks had it. Well done! 2) the food is reasonably priced and I very much enjoy their toasts, especially their hummus + veggies. Delish! And their avocado toast is delish and very affordably priced at $5 when it's not out of stock everywhere as it is now. The reason for 3 stars: * Service is only decent. The baristas commonly don't know much about the coffee. Today, for example, she didn't know what the house coffee was. She said, "I don't know. I think it's a blend ‍."I don't need to know much but I'm accustomed to fine coffee shops like Campos where the baristas can tell me where the beans are from and how they're roasted, as they clearly take pride in the process and preparation of the prepared product. I rarely get a sense of fine craft in the coffee prepared for me at this La Barba. * My understanding is that the owners don't treat their staff well. The former manager was treated so poorly that he left and went to another coffee shop and that's a shame because he was THE BEST. So I don't blame the staff that stayed for not being happy to be there if it is correct that they aren't treated well. * It seems La Barba may be growing too quickly but hopefully they're just growing pains and they can snap out of it. The location is ideal for me so I'll keep going back and hope I can later revise this rating if/when things improve. So the long and short of it is that the food and location are great but the coffee and staff are subpar. And for a coffee shop, I consider those the most important. read more

I know we are all dealing with Covid "BS" but The fact that we went to zipper coffee after it was given to us and removed her mask for maybe about a half a second to then have a very.. SNOOTY short response of "KEEP YOUR MASK ON" I completely understand if that's your policy but we were literally about 30 feet from the barista's.. just trying to sip our coffee before we leave the coffee shop to make sure we don't need to add any sugar, milk, maybe more ice.. was a little rude if you asked me.. and if you like your cold brew a little bitter and acidic and this is your spot but I definitely needed to add some milk afterwards to cut into the acidity and bitterness. But I guess that makes sense to go along with the bitter people that were working there this morning. I've been to well over a couple hundreds of coffee shops.. I never have I felt so unwelcome and little to the people working there that I would never want to return. I usually don't ever even write negative reviews but I did not feel the need to ever return and I did feel the need to absolutely say how I felt after this not so great service from two people who seem to dislike us from the moment we walked in. And when we walked in we had our mask we're very polite I even made a joke about the giving him my card he's like oh it's right in front of you.. ohh so I cracked a joke and he didn't even laugh back.. like I was putting him off for making a morning joke. I just moved into the Parc and have visited La Barba twice in the last week. I have not enjoyed either visit. My first visit, I ordered cold brew, with heavy cream, and vanilla syrup. As I waited, I watched the barista make my iced cold brew. The barista filled only half of the cup with the cream, syrup, and cold brew. The rest of the cup was filled with ice. I felt like that was a complete waste of $5. I decided to give La Barba a second chance. My second visit I decided to order the same thing but asked for NO ice so that I could actually get a full cup of coffee. This time, the barista filled the cup the exact same as last time and proceeded to fill the cup with ice. She realized her mistake and took the ice out. However, she then filled the rest of the cup with WATER. I left upset and with a disgusting coffee. Again, it was another waste of $5. Yes, I should have gone back in hopes that she would make me a new coffee but the fact that this was the second time, I just decided that I would never go back. read more

Now, to put anything other than espresso prepared in La Barba coffee chop would just be outright disrespectful to my body. The barristas here are friendly, and they know their coffee. If you have any questions regarding the menu they are more than happy to help. Management is also extremely helpful and friendly. Ahh! What a beautiful space. I come here every time I come to the Gateway. There's more and more pop up exhibits in Gateway, so I always make sure I stop by to get some coffee here! The location is awesome; somehow, I feel so secluded from the rest of the world (in a good way) here. The interior design with all the gold pipes are just very geometrically and aesthetically pleasing for my math & art nerd inside. The staff is always nice. Coffee is always good! I came to La Barba because it seems like it is the local roaster for the majority of cafes I have been so far... unfortunately I was underwhelmed with my experience in the Gateways cafe. When you walk in the aesthetic was pleasing but not very welcoming. I wasn't greeted when I walked in.. seems like the baristas were not enjoying their jobs... and seemed overwhelmed with the little they had to do, due to the fact I was the 3rd person to sit down... The beverage it self was decent it wasn't spectacular latte art was good the barista at the bar seemed dialed but my espresso was sour and not in a positive fruity notes, which I enjoy in coffees! The latte was sub par but couldn't get past the sour notes coming through the espresso which the milk couldn't cover. I didn't order any pastries they didn't seem appetizing... The only reason I gave it 2 stars was lack of feeling welcome in the shop when I enter a cafe I want to be welcomed and treated like I'm wanted in the cafe. read more

This Gateway La Barba location needs some service and multitasking training. But not because it's ever busy. There is no reason I should stop in at 9:12, be the only active open order, and not received my toast and latte until 9:26. I watched these employees start and stop spreading toppings on my toast over 10 times while they were talking/training. Attention to detail and some sort of sense of urgency would be appreciated. This is the only walking distance coffee spot near North Temple station. If you could get it together you might be able to build a regular customer base for the hundreds of coffee drinkers that live and work at The Gateway. The product tastes good. But for an expensive $12 I am not missing my train or returning for that service unless I'm in desperate need. read more

Service was rude, I went to sit down and the barista told me I couldn't sit there because someone was going to put a chess set there... and not play it. Apparently a chess set was more important than me being comfortable. Coffee was meh. I paid for vanilla in my latte and I didn't taste any vanilla. Coffee cake wasn't worth it either. Overall I finished my coffee cake and left as quickly as I could cause I didn't feel welcomed. First time coming here and won't come back. Bummer cause it is a super nice location. read more

Came here almost everyday for a week as I was at the Gateway for a conference and work. Got myself an iced matcha latte with soy. Good stuff! The staff are generous with the matcha powder and service is fast as there are almost no line every time I went. They also offer a small selection of pastry. I tried a vegan chocolate chip cookie, it was a bit dry. Cute interior and they also have patio outdoor seats. Nice to have them at the Gateway! read more

La Barba is usually a 4/5 star experience for me and I've frequented their other location often. Baristas here were friendly enough but my biggest complaint is that this was a very wasteful experience and my coffee was poorly made. I am 97% sure they forgot to put the espresso in my lavender latte as it did not have the color of a latte or the taste of coffee. I went back and asked if there was any chance they forgot the shots and they said they didn't know. I paid for another shot and they poured it over my existing latte and added more ice and she handed it to me overflowing over the lid and I was left to clean it up The experience was also very wasteful. Everything provided was plastic, even when we stayed at the coffee shop to eat. I understand that this is a mall and many people may want their order to go, but in 2019 I would at least like the option to have glass plates and utensils. We all got pastries and they were in boxes instead of plates, and we did not specify they were to go. Overall not my favorite La Barba experience. read more
