I have been coming to LA Bodywork for about 2 years now. As an aging Brazilian jiujitsu practitioner I am constantly getting hurt, and Lisa Marie and Hannah are always able to completely heal me, or at the very least reduce my symptoms while I address the issue in other ways. Most already know Lisa Marie. She is amazing and has been doing this for a long time. As Lisa Marie has gotten busier, I was unable to get time with her and so gave Hannah a shot. Although she is relatively new, after only a few minutes I could tell she was very well trained and she has been my go to (in Sherman Oaks) for the past 6 months. I've never really been one for pampering, per se...I don't get mani-pedis and I consider those "relaxing" massages to be pointless. I just don't get paying someone to just rub lotion on me. If I'm going to pay for a massage, there'd better be some work done on my muscles. That's why prefer deep tissue/sports massages. I, like everyone else, carry my stress and anxiety in my neck, shoulders, and upper back. Admittedly, I'm wound up pretty tight. I've recently made a conscious decision to prioritize my self-care, especially since I started having some mobility issues and increasing joint pain. But getting a good deep tissue massage has a lot to do with the massage therapist: 1) Do they know what they're doing (how to manipulate/release muscles)? 2) Do I feel comfortable with them touching me? For these reasons, I'm happy to have found Lisa. She knows how to do a PROPER deep tissue massage. She can hit the muscles in the right places. It's relaxing...and painful--but the right kind of pain. The kind of pain that tells me the stress I'm holding inside is being released. Believe me, I've experienced some bad massages in the past that were just painful and not therapeutic, so I'd like to think I can tell the difference. Lisa is responsive and is able to adjust the amount of pressure as needed. At the beginning of the appointment, she'll ask if you have any specific areas that need focus. She's even found sore muscles that I didn't even know were sore! She knows what she's doing, has a pleasant demeanor, and is very professional. I recently went in with some neck pain--perhaps a combination of sleeping wrong and feeling immense anxiety and stress in recent weeks. The crazy thing was, the next morning I suddenly felt "lighter" and more optimistic. I've had plenty of deep tissue massages over the past several years and this is the first time I've ever felt a mental impact afterwards!! I think we really underestimate how connected our mental and physical states are...and whatever Lisa did, it not only eased my neck pain, but my mood also improved! I'll definitely be making these massages more routine as part of my self-care regimen. Amber is a standout physical therapist. I am a dancer, and though I am quite familiay with body contact, she took extra steps to ensure I was comfortable. Sometimes you just want a massage to relax, but if you want a massage because of specific pain or problems I highly recommend this place. It was definitely relaxing (music, lighting, etc), but they seem to approach massages with a scientific mindset, focused on healing more than just relaxing. I went here for pain relief and it really delivered. I've told other massage therapists that I have pain in specific areas for specific reasons, but they never seem to get it. This was a completely different experience. It makes sense that the location is within a physical therapy building! Hannah was really excellent. She's clearly very well trained in knowing the physiology of how groups of muscles work together. I told her the problems I was having and she had me do a minute of stretches so I could tell her were I felt pain. Lisa is amazing! I am an ironman triathlete and am going to Lisa for regular ART sports massage sessions. She has been incredibly flexible, always trying to work with my super busy work and training schedule. Recently my IT bands were super locked up before a 70.3 race and she got me in and helped unlocked the problem areas and by miracle a few days later had a great race! I have a full ironman coming up in a few weeks and have been having pretty intense calf and Achilles pain and she performed a very focused and intense ART session to really dig in and release the muscle spasms. The pervious reviews are all spot on. She has a super relaxed chill energy that makes all her clients feel comfortable. And she delivers a superior sports massage for intense athletes. UPDATE: As I got to within 1 month of my ironman race, I developed some swelling behind my left knee and some snapping in the hamstring tendon. Lisa saw me several times with no notice and worked on some seriously aggravated body parts. I was not sure if I was going to be able to finish my race. But as the day before the race arrived I felt great. In July, I completed my first ever Ironman triathlon: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run. I had a fantastic race and finished the event with no problem. Not only did I finish but I was able to run the entire marathon. It was an unbelievable journey of pain and frustration where I went from not being able to run nor bike and then in 2 years finish an ironman with no pain. I cannot tell you how good it felt to cross that finish line. Most importantly I learned that it takes an incredible amount of patience, knowledge, and support from many different people to help you through an injury. While it may not be possible for everyone to run an ironman, people can and often do more than they believe they can. People deserve to be able to move their bodies without pain and to have people like Lisa who can diagnose and treat muscle and tissue dysfunction. She is truly amazing and at the top of her field. Lisa was exactly the kind of masseuse I was looking for. I've struggled with back issues for almost a year, and I finally got them squared away via months of physical therapy. Toward the end of my PT, I noticed that I was getting the most benefit from the therapist's body work. But at PT, they only spend 10 minutes doing that. So I set out to find a masseuse who understood the body and injury rehabilitation the same way a physical therapist does. Thank God I found Lisa. She was able to work my back like a PT. And she was also able to identify new areas to work on the fed into my back issues. So instead of the short ten minutes I was accustomed to getting at the physical therapist, I got a full 60 minutes. I went a few different times and was really happy with my massages. She works out of a chiropractor's office so you won't get the ambience you do at a spa (jacuzzi, locker rooms, showers, etc.), but that's not something that was ever really important to me and the massage room is nice and cozy.
