Yo guys... Like as a poor college student I got an entire gorgeous cake, a sandwich, this guava cheese pastry, and a coffee for 30 bucks its amazing. And when I went in everyone was just. So nice. They're all excited that its my birthday and I'm excited and it was great. And then I tried the cake (raspberry with chocolate ganache) and it was incredible. The raspberry frosting on the outside was delicious; it wasn't thin or overly buttery - we're talking thick, but not too thick that its gummy. Tried one of their cakes at a birthday party and love it so much I had to go there myself and get a cake for my daughters party. I got their black and white sheet cake which was a vanilla cake layer and a chocolate cake layer with delicious chocolate mousse in the middle and frosted with the most amazing buttercream ever. I went here with $15.00 groupon to get a cake for my father's birthday. Friendly service and lots to choose from. We ended up with a strawberry shortcake. It was pretty amazing--light and moist with real whipped cream. Without the groupon though, it would have been over $30.00... a bit pricey for my tastes, but so good it might be worth it. read more

This is my go-to place for cupcakes. Most are light, moist and delicious, and there are many different varieties. The red velvet cupcakes are my favorite. Also amazing is the pumpernickel bread which I eat w/a little butter or slice of cheese as a snack. Its also amazing toasted with a fried egg on top. I ordered a cake for my mother-in-law's 97th birthday. The cake was lovely. I picked it up after work and was driving home. A car stopped short in front of me and the cake fell to the floor. It was in the back seat so I couldn't see how bad it was. When I got home and saw it, I wanted to cry. I called the bakery and told them what happened. They suggested that if I brought it back that evening, they could fix it in the morning. When I picked it up the next day, it was back to being lovely!!! I was so grateful to them and all of us appreciated their concern and help. WE LOVED THE CAKE!! Strawberry and banana in a custard filling with a white cake and buttercream icing. I went to the bakery and asked them if they could make a yo gabba gabba cake , i wanted the characters standing made out of fondant . They girl told me they could do it but it would be expensive she made a couple of phone calls before she gave us a idea how the cake would be made . the amount given was a little over $200.00 .The day of the birthday i went to pick up the cake i paid and then they brought out the cake. I was shocked to see they did nothing we told them to do they did what they wanted. Were do i start,the characters were not made or standing on the cake they just cut out peices of fondant and layed them out on the cake! then we asked them for a specific background , no we got just plain white . I had no choice but to go home with the cake my wife was very upset. Also the cake was nothing special in taste, over $200.00 garbage.Never again. read more

I'm so disappointed. The store always had a great system during the holidays. I've ordered Easter pies (sweet ricotta and pizza rustica) for the past few years. In previous years, you'd place your order by phone and there was always a separate line for pick-ups when you get to the store (as there should be!). Last holiday, they did away with the pick up line and I was forced to wait on a line that was practically out the door. I could literally see the package with my name waiting for me behind the counter! If I hadn't already paid by credit card I would have left. I waited almost 30 minutes on line and It took the girl behind the counter one minute to give me my purchase. Very bad business Labon... I will not be placing my order with you this year and I imagine numerous holiday customers feel the same. I know because we were all furious together while waiting on that horrible line... read more

Over the years, the quality has improved. However, it's still not a bakery I frequent or would recommend. Goods aren't always fresh. The deliciousness is missing in some items. If you are nearby and want to pick up a quick dessert, it's fine. But if you're looking for something to serve guests or be a real treat, I'd pass. As an obsessive compulsive dessert eater, I have visited La Bon many many times, and anything I have ever ordered has always been incredible. Truly. Every single thing they make is made very, very welI. Some of my favorite things: Cream puffs - Made with the tears of real life unicorns. A little pricey at about $1.30 each, but heavenly and worth it. Dulce de leche mini cheesecake Carrot cake cupcakes - These are so moist and have the perfect amount of cream cheese frosting that's not too sweet. If you love carrot cake, get these! Pineapple/Cherry cheese strips Chocolate dipped strawberry cupcake St. Joseph's Pastries - Usually available in March. These are otherworldly and a special treat once per year Brown Derby Cake - The best $36 you'll ever spend. It's a dome shaped chocolate/vanilla cake filled with fresh fruit (usually strawberries, bananas, peaches and pineapple, with whipped cream, and then covered in whipped cream and chocolate cake crumbs. (They have a yellow derby cake too but I've never tried it) Danish Rings Blueberry open cake - These are $8.75 each and the perfect thing to bring when you're stopping at someone's house and don't want to come empty handed. The apple open cake is really delicious too. Every time I have brought one of these to someone's house everyone has raved about them. Chocolate covered waffles -Caramel filled Belgian waffle triangles covered in chocolate and rolled in Oreos **drools over keyboard** Cherry/Apple turnovers King Cake- The original recipe from Paul's Pastry Shop of Picayune, Mississippi. La Bon is the only bakery besides Paul's that makes it and it's delicious. Not sure when they have it but it's very rare. Italian/Rye bread (seeded and unseeded) - They will slice it for you if needed They also make sandwiches on their fresh baked bread. During the winter they have soup specials daily and you can purchase a half sandwich with a cup of soup for $8. My coworkers and I always love going there for lunch because it's delicious and so filling. During the holidays they make fresh pies. Pumpkin, coconut custard, pecan pie, blueberry, apple, etc. and they are the BEST you'll ever have. You can't go wrong picking one up for a holiday dinner and they are reasonably priced too. I used to visit the La Bonbonniere location in South Plainfield, NJ and moved so I now visit their Somerset, NJ bakery. La Bonbonniere's buttercream frosting is so unique because it is light and it is whipped. It's sweet without being overly sweet and because it's so light you just want to eat every bit of it. I love it. The cake is also light and fluffy and moist so I'm not sure how they manage that but whatever their secret is it keeps us all coming back for more! Also when it comes to brownies I always get them at La Bonbonniere Bake Shoppe. They ice them with this amazing chocolate frosting so the brownies are just amazing (and worth every stinking calorie)! The Napoleons are great, too. Their Brownies and Napoleons are a bit larger but the girls are so sweet there they always take the time to cut them in half for me and box them up beautifully. I honestly cannot tell you what each item costs because as good as everything is at La Bonbonniere I really do not care but I usually spend about $20-30 for either a cake or 2-3 boxes of Brownies and Pastries depending on the occasion. The smiles they bring and the yummy sounds I hear when people enjoy them are worth every penny. I highly recommend the La Bonbonniere Bake Shoppe. read more

I had a groupon and had to use up $15 ( original value paid). I stopped by and they were pretty bare, they had some specialty cakes but they were over $25 so I was only allowed to get cupcakes and cakes with the groupon. It was entirely my fault, I should have read the fine print on the coupon but still a bummer. It does seem rather silly for a business to limit customers to only a few items. But I was already in Edison, so I ordered two red velvet cupcakes and the rest spring cupcakes hoping they would be worth the drive..Well I should have hoped harder because both the red velvet and the mixed spring cupcakes ( vanilla and chocolate) were pretty bland to put it nicely, they didn't taste fresh.They were "ok", as in Shoprite or A&P bakery "ok"..not at all what I was expecting..bleh! Even my cupcake loving 6 year old did not attempt to sneak one off my kitchen countertop..where 4 sad little cupcakes are still sitting 2 days later...and that says a lot in a household where my husband and daughter would not hesitate to sell me (their own wife and beloved mother) for a good cupcake..Looks like I will have to toss them when I get home tonight but it is a real shame. Parking is a bit difficult, it's a small narrow parking lot. However, its croissant is quite a good surprise, not comparable to home baked from scratch, yet the best I could find so far around central NJ. Multigrain loaf, apple strudel and muffin were nice too, it's not fake-taste like some other bakery (claimed to have french influence!) close by. If you can get their key lime pie ( they only make it when the limes are in season - no bottled juice used) I highly recommend it. I love the frosting on their cakes and cupcakes, but it is very different from other places; it is very light,and tasted halfway between whipped cream and buttercream ( it is not heavy and sugary with the grit of regular frosting but is not whipped cream). The cake is very light too. I like that, but other people want more traditional frosting/cake, so check what the frosting is on each cake you get from them, because different cakes may have different frostings. They also have wonderful sandwiches. Everything is very expensive, so it is a special occasion or just for a treat kind of place, but I still would recommend it to everyone, and I find myself trying to invent special occasions just to justify bringing home cupcakes ( my favorite are the chocolate cupcakes with white frosting). They also make a green velvet cake that is a unique hit for St Patrick's day! read more

This used to be my favorite bakery, but no more. One time I was in the shop and the owners were just about to leave and I heard them tell the girls push the foccacia, push other items. Pastry are not good tasting, danish are often stale. Cakes are nothing spectacular either. One time I went in and the floor was filthy. By the way, the day I was in the shop when the owners were leaving, they almost hit us in the parking lot they flew out of there so fast. This bakery is to be avoided.
