My wife chose this French restaurant, it's very small inside but cozy. Had dinner here with my Family, not hard to find the restaurant but it's hard to find a parking spot. We had our Appetizer, main course , and dessert but I'm just gonna review what we had for our main entree since my wife already did a full review of what we had here. So I had the Cassoulet, I always enjoyed this dish because it has Variety of meats on it, taste-wise it's the same as the other Cassoulets I had in French restaurants we've been to, just like ordering this because of the Duck, Sausage and Pork Belly. My Son had a Pork Chop and it's a big one, it has a delicious mushroom sauce. My wife had the Duck Confit, the duck has a nice crispy skin and juicy inside, with delicious creamy sauce. Brought my girlfriend here in order to celebrate Valentine's Day (though it wasn't exactly on Valentine's Day, neither her nor I are fans of pre-set menus). It's a very small, but intimate restaurant with only a handful of tables. I would definitely recommend making reservations ahead of time. The intimate vibes are definitely heightened by the dim lighting, which as perfect for a Valentine's Day dinner. Overall the waitstaff was attentive but service was on the slower slide. With such a restricted table count one would hope that they would be a little more prompt getting food out. I didn't mind too much since I had the most wonderful company, but with the pace of service we were there for quite a while. It was a celebration so cocktails were in order. My girlfriend got a Kir Royale and I opted for The Saint. Both cocktails subscribed to the less is more philosophy of mixology and were thoroughly enjoyed. No smokes in mirrors needed, just crisp, refreshing and deliciously clean flavors. Now for the food. 1.) We decided on Escargot as our appetizer and they offered very balanced yet rich, garlicky, buttery flavors with some nice texture contrast provided by the puff pastry. This was definitely a 4/5 dish for me. Though it was delicious we did find ourselves wishing for a little more crisp coming from the pastry. 2.) I chose the Confit de Canard for my main. It was my favorite dish of the evening. The duck was perfectly cooked and full of that rich flavor one expects. The brussel sprouts were nicely cooked and made for a fine side dish. I did find that the mustard cream sauce its served with was unnecessary and in my opinion created a sort of disconnect in the dish. I think I would've preferred something a little more subtle to pair with duck so that it would supplement the dish. Instead I felt like the flavors were competing, which may be a positive to some, but I found I could've gone without it. 3.) My girlfriend went with the Cote de Porc and did not enjoy her dish as much as the rest of our meal. I tasted a bit of it and it seemed like the pork got a bit lost between the mushroom cream sauce and the potato gratin. The gratin itself was my favorite component from her dish. All in all we were treated to a good dinner here at La Bonne Table. It's a relatively small table and small restaurant so its something I'd be open to trying in another occasion, for another celebration, but it's not a place I think I would come to with a higher frequency. We had dinner here last night for our last night here in Hillcrest. We started with the escargot, and it was absolutely delicious. So good, we ordered the French baguette, to sop up the remaining warm butter and garlic. The next course, we shared the salad and it was light and perfectly dressed. I ordered the grilled pork chop with scalloped potatoes and it tasted better than I imagined possible. Also the rainbow trout with grilled asparagus, was prepared to perfection. I had been wanting to try La Bonne Table for some time now, but each time I had attempted, there were no available reservations. The reason for that is that they are a very small restaurant, and seem to have a regular following in the community. On weekends, reservations fill up quickly, Anyway, I I was able to secure reservations at last and met up with two of my friends on a Friday night in December. It was quite the rainy night. Luckily, I found free parking easily nearby, as perhaps, the rain was keeping the crowds away. Once I stepped inside, the restaurant had a cozy European and vintage feel. The walls had black an white photographs of France, and the bar looks like it was straight out of an old movie. I absolutely loved the decor. I was greeted quickly as I walked in. I was the first or our party to arrive. I was given water and a menu, and the server checked to see if I needed anything else. Once my friends arrived, they were met with the same level of attentive service. With this particular group of friends, we generally share each dish so that we can taste a variety. Here the menu is small. I can appreciate a small menu, as it became apparent that each dish is treated with attention. However, it was a bit challenging to find dishes that we would all enjoy off of the small menu, due to our variety of preferences. We decided to start with the pâte and the rillettes de saumon ( an indulgent salmon spread). Both were served with baguette and butter. For our entrees, we had the truite amandine (almond trout) and the short rib. Honestly, all of the food had so much flavor and was perfectly cooked. I cannot comment on the pâte, as I did not try it. However, it was all I could do not to fill up on the salmon and baguette while trying to save room for the entrees. The trout was delicate and flavorful. The short rib was bold and melted in our mouths. For drinks, I chose the rose petal martini followed by a Cote de Rhone with my dinner. The rose petal martini was good and had fresh pomegranate, but I wish it had a stronger rose water/ rose petal flavor. My friend had a passion fruit spritz. I tasted it and appreciated the abundant fresh passion fruit. I really enjoyed the Cote de Rhone with my dinner. All throughout, the service was excellent. We were always checked upon, but never rushed. Even when we requested our leftovers to go, they held the bag in the kitchen, and gave it to us when we were ready to leave. What a lively little french bistro! Yes it's pricey but the ambiance is so cozy and romantic and the service is absolutely top notch! The menu is quite limited and I wish they had a chicks. dish but they prepare their menu items very well and portions are quite generous. We ordered the endive salad to share. This was a fresh and well dressed salad. For our main courses we ordered the steak frites and the mussels. We probably could have shared just one entree. The steak was perfectly cooked, the sauce was to die for and the fries were perfectly crisp and well seasoned. I had asparagus instead of fries and they were delicious as well. The mussels came in a delicious broth and there were plenty of fries to share. Hubby could not finish the mussels. He probably left at least ten mussels in the bowl. We popped in without a reservation on Friday evening, they were getting busy and stated they had reserved tables, but they made room for two at the bar. I ordered the salad pictured, and the creme brulee. The salad was delicious and the vinaigrette was just tart enough. The creme brulee was good but was lukewarm, and would have been tastier if it came out hot. This restaurant is wholesome, like you're sitting in someone's living room - however it was very warm inside so it was uncomfortable adjusting to the temperature when we first sat down. The staff were kind and helpful when we ordered. Parking in this area is tough so I recommend arriving early. read more

Finally remembered to visit La Bonne Table in Hillcrest! Traditional French vibes. From the size of the restaurant and the white table cloths, to the waiters dressed in white collar button down shirts to the various photos on the wall. Our waiter was great and patient as we took our time ordering our dinner. We were enjoying the ambiance too much. When we finally made up our minds we had: Cote de Pore- served with potato gratin; absolutely mouth watering. Potato heaven. Moules a la bisque de Homard- Mussels! served with lobster bisque broth and fries. Finger licking good. Both of these entrees were delicious. Be warned, service is extremely slow! Even though we put our order in fairly quickly, we were there for just under 2 hours and ended up missing the movie we had planned for after. My guy took me here for Valentine's Day and it is such a lovely, intimate little place. I loved looking at all the decor on the walls. There was plenty, but it wasn't overwhelming. I absolutely adored how simple their cocktails were. Most places nowadays pack in a million ingredients trying to be innovative and "insta-worthy," but it's not necessary. My guy got The Saint and I got Kir Royal. Both were refreshing, simple and delicious! We started with the Escargots (delicious! had a nice amount of garlic butter on each piece, but I wish the puff pastries were crispier). For dinner, my guy got the Confit de Canard (the duck itself was delicious! I didn't like the mustard cream sauce at all. The brussell sprouts were cooked nicely, but I would've preferred a different vegetable that's not as bitter) and I got the Cote de Pore (the best part was the potato gratin. The pork chop was dry and lacked any real flavor. I know you're supposed to use the mushroom cream sauce, but it wasn't good). We always take turns to choose which restaurant to dine at and it was my Son's turn and he chose to dine at this French Restaurant called "THE BONNE TABLE". There wasn't that much space inside, pretty small with an extra outdoor seating. All of the tables were full, so my first impression was that it must be good, and it was actually pretty good. Ordered the following: *PORK CHOP *CASSOULET *CONFIT DUCK *PATE MAISON *DAISY COCKTAIL *DESSERTS , CREME BRULEE & MOUSSE. We had our complimentary bread followed by this delicious appetizer, the PATE MAISON , its a Pork Pate with pistachios and this was delicious, I used my extra bread that I got on the PATE and it was very satisfying, like I felt full already and I hadn't gotten to my main meal yet. My DAISY cocktail was delicious. Our main course came all at the same time and I knew my Son would enjoy his PORK CHOP 'coz he loves pork chop, this PORK CHOP is a Bone-in Pork chop with Mushroom cream sauce, I got a slice of it right away from his plate to taste and it was so tender and juicy, it tasted perfect. My son enjoyed his Pork chop. I got the CONFIT DUCK, it has crispy and tender duck thighs, it's lightly seasoned, and has good portions. Whenever we eat at a French restaurant my husband always gets the CASSOULET, it's a french Casserole with Duck confit, sausage, and pork belly, and as always he liked this dish. For dessert I ordered the MOUSSE CHOCOLAT and CREME BRULEE, the Mousse au chocolat was pretty good and big, so I let my husband and son have it and I secure my favorite dessert, the Creme brulle, just for myself, it was delicious and had a nice crisp caramelized sugar on top. Ended up at La Bonne as a walk-in on a first date after our original plan (Devo Diva) was closed. The restaurant appeared mostly empty, but all tables were reserved. The staff accommodated us at the bar with two seats after someone kindly scooted over. Food:The salmon was genuinely delicious - perfectly crispy skin, juicy flavorful tomatoes, and great execution overall. My date enjoyed her salad as well. For dessert, we both had the crème brûlée, which was good but smaller than expected and caramelized almost all the way through, leaving less of the creamy custard I was hoping for. The decaf coffee was excellent. My main complaint is portion size - I left still feeling a bit hungry after a $100+ meal (salmon, salad, two desserts, drinks). Service: The bartender was respectful and patient, clearly trying not to interrupt our conversation. However, this went a bit too far - I had to flag him down each time we needed something, which slowed our meal considerably when I was focused on my date. Atmosphere: Cozy and intimate with a living room vibe that actually worked well for a first date. The downside? It was uncomfortably warm despite the rainy evening outside, and the space is tight enough that you can hear neighboring conversations clearly. Value: At $100 for two people (no alcohol, one salad), it's priced at a premium level. While the food quality was there, the service and portions didn't quite match the price point for me. Would I return? Probably not - there are other restaurants in this price range that deliver more complete experiences. Visited this adorable little restaurant with the sweetest staff on a slow Sunday afternoon for lunch. The restaurant itself is so beautiful decorated and designed. The outdoor patio offers comfortable seating with a nice view of the buzzing community surrounding it. And the food!! Wow! What a gem! It is the coziest restaurant with great decor and a cute little bar in the back of the restaurant. The staff are super friendly. Our server was very nice and attentive. We went with our friends and decided to bring our own wine. Their corkage fee is very reasonable- I think $25. Their menu items are as well. I forgot to take a pic of our appetizers but remembered our entrees and desserts! Below is what we ordered. Frisée salad- fresh with a light vinaigrette. French onion soup- holy cow it was so good and such a generous portion. I was satisfied with just this! Pork chop- huge and so moist. Perfectly cooked and seasoned nicely. I enjoyed a wonderful early dinner here at La Bonne Table during a business trip. The easily accessible restaurant reminded me of home cooking and I waxed nostalgic for the quaint house restaurant combination of Jean's in Colton, CA. The elements for the nostalgia were all present: well made classic recipes, friendly and accommodating service, and a clean and quaint ambiance. The weather and outdoor seating made La Bonne Table a better dining option. Also, Jean's closed when Jean passed away in his 80s. A true American immigrant success story. PROS: The deliciously decadent homestyle portions of homemade pate, tart cornichons, and sour mustard smeared across freshly warmed crusty baguette. The piping hot cassoulet with duck confit, talousse sausage, garlic sausage, and thick cut bacon with white beans filled me with beautiful memories from my 20s at Jean's and became a part of small Francophile gastronomic community in the Inland Empire. It tasted like home. Everything homemade and tasty. Dining next to me were old friends celebrating their birthdays, a family enjoying a reunion dinner, a couple on a date, and friends taking a meal on the terrace. The friendly and attentive servers worked as a team to help me feel welcomed in their home. The prices were extremely reasonable. I highly recommend. CONS: The only con is the local neighborhood being so close to the restaurant. It worked great until some random car alarm disrupted the quiet of the sonic landscape for over 15 to 20 minutes. Just to put it in context, wormwood is actually my favorite restaurant in San Diego. However after coming to La Bonne Table I think I have a new go-to. First, the ambiance is PERFECT. It's quiet, small, unassuming, dimly lit, so romantic. Service was kind and attentive, very warm. Mains are my favorite French mains I've ever had at a San Diego French restaurant !! I really enjoyed my entire experience at La Bonne Table. I went early and got a seat at the bar no problem. I was promptly helped and when I said that I wasn't sure between the trout and the mussels I was told that a rainy evening might call for something hearty like mussels in a lobster bisque. I had dinner here last night with a friend, and I have to start by saying--this place is tiny but in the best way possible. The intimate, cozy atmosphere truly transports you to Paris. It's perfect for a date night, and I loved how warm and charming the space felt. We started with the bread and butter. As a baker, I tend to be very critical of baked goods, and while the bread had great flavor, it was a bit too tough for my liking--especially since no slicing knife was provided. Still, we enjoyed it, especially once we started dipping it in the sauce from our escargot. Speaking of which, the escargot was absolutely delicious! The sauce was so flavorful and vibrant, easily one of the highlights of the meal. For mains, I had the trout dinner, and my friend had the duck. We both loved our dishes--they were light yet satisfying. My fish was incredibly fresh, and the asparagus with almonds was cooked perfectly. The flavors were balanced and well-executed. To finish, we shared the crème brûlée. Personally, I didn't care for it, but I also don't think I'm a crème brûlée person in general. My friend, who has had it in Paris, enjoyed it but said she's had better. For drinks, I ordered a French 75, which was absolutely delicious--bright, refreshing, and well-made. A little coffee and desert go a long way. We had finished dinner across the street and were actually going elsewhere for a sweet and an espresso when we happened on La Bonne Table. I had not been here in years and my dining partner had never been here, so in we went. We ordered the house made crepe auzette and the chocolate mouse. My dining partner had espresso. The crepes were a 9 out of 10 and the mouse was a 10 out of 10. Both were a delight, reasonably priced for the quality and the serving size was also spot on. Our server was great. He kept us plied with cold water and made sure we were taken care of. The six-top next to us had all manner of dinners brought and every one of them looked marvelous. It seems they all enjoyed every bite. If there was one qualm, the espresso was not served in a warm cup which brought the temp of thee drink down to tepid. A small detail, but a warm cup for any coffee drink makes the drink so much better. We both loves this place and will be back for a proper meal soon. I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. 5/5! We loved everything about this seemingly old house turned restaurant. The food, the drinks, the service, all wonderful. Located on a hot little food corner on 5th Ave in Banker's Hill, across from the likes of Cocina de Barrio, Nola on 5th, and Huapongos, lies the quaint and cozy La Bonne Table. I've heard this is an excellent spot for restaurant week, however we just missed SDRW by a few days. However, I was not going to let that stop from trying out the French fair at LBT. We started out with the cheese of the day, $15, which included a nice sheep's milk cheese (I could not get the actual name of it for the life of me), poached pear, bread, and a balsamic vinaigrette or reduction. The cheese was a perfect starter for what was to come. We also had several cocktails, the Kir Royale, $13, and the Sidecar, $15, and both were strong, yet perfectly balanced. My lady doesn't even drink but she finished her Kir Royale before I finished my beverage, so I know she enjoyed it. We followed up with the Steak Frites, $44, and the Cote de Porc (16 oz. double cut Duroc pork chop), $36,- YES PLEASE! Both dishes were fantastic, well-seasoned, and perfectly prepared. The steak was incredibly tender, and the pork chop was juicy, both being benchmarks for their particular proteins. For dessert we had the Crepes Suzette and the Dessert of the Day, hazelnut cake, both $9 each. I expected a bit more from the Suzette, fresh fruit perhaps, and the hazelnut cake was rather small; however, both were tasty, and we really only needed one dessert to begin with- but hey Víva right!?!? And might I say, you could have paid quite a bit more for a meal of this caliber, so the $150 for two, including drinks and desserts wasn't bad at all. Parking can be challenging, but that's to be said about any place in this area; be aware that you may have to walk a bit, but I can promise you it will be well worth it. I can't wait to return, and knowing me, we'll probably just run it back with what we got last time. The restaurant is nice and open allowing for proper ventilation, and an abundance of fresh air. I came here years ago for restaurant week with my parents and husband and had a good experience. I remember it being very intimate wirh excellent French fare. I wanted to come back and share the experience with our child, and did not review the "not good for kids" feature. We have taken her to some places like Huntress and Steak 48 and I had thought it would be ok, but I felt like we ended up causing so much trouble we should have just not bothered. First, I could only book for 4 through opentable. I figured it would be good to hold the spot and call to see if they could change it to 5, but it turns out they were booked solid and didn't have the space. They, impressively, said they called the other patrons to see if they would be willing to accommodate/change to somehow help accommodate which I thought was excessively hospitable, but no one was willing. We were fine leaving my husband home but when we actually got there my child refused to sit in her own chair and proceeded to...act like a child. I had him come join us after all since there was an open seat now and I thought he could help wrangle the kid, but I'm sure we were annoying other patrons and the staff. There was one staff member who was very kind and brought out some books and crayons that he said he always carries around for his own daughter. That was so thoughtful, and we were grateful. But it was clear to me early on I had made a mistake and we just kind of had to power through.... That said the restaurant week menu is great and a good value. The crab rillettes and lobster bisque were probably my favorite part of the meal. I got the steak frites and the frites were excellent, but the flavor of the steak and sauce weren't my cup of tea. The duck confit was more up my alley and the Brussels sprouts were divine. I must say the portions were very generous, especially the pork shank! The crepes Suzette were appropriately boozy and not overly sweet. The chocolate mousse was a large portion and extremely dark and decadent. My kid loved the food and ate a bit of everything, so at least she had a good time..? That said, do NOT bring your kid(s). Big mistake. Most of the clientele were older, but maybe that's because we were there for early dinner as we were dining with my parents who are seniors. As my daughter said "dinner?? It's not even dark yet!" Easily one of the best meals I've ever had in San Diego. First off, the service was impeccable. Great recommendations by our server and attentive service from the entire staff as far as making sure that our water or iced teas or wines were topped off. The pate was delicious, but the snails were out of this world great. I would eat 47,000 of those escargots. The pork chop may have been the best pork chop that I've ever eaten in a restaurant in the last 20 years. The duck was really good, but definitely to me was second to the pork chop. The french fries were delicious as were the potatoes au gratin. Lastly, the crème brûlée was on point. But if you go, you have to get the escargot. The crepes suzette was just ok, with the sauce nice but the actual crepes a bit thick. My chair got uncomfortable by the end. The seating was close and I would not recommend for children. I've been to France twice, and La Bonne really feels like French neighborhood restaurant...small but elegant, quaint, and cozy! Service was friendly all around from the staff, and our waiter even brought out complimentary champagne for our anniversary! C'est Bon! Course 1(me): Pate...delicious! I love this stuff! And it was a huge portion for 1 person, but I ate it all. Definitely shareable Course 1(wife): Lobster Bisque...sweet, buttery, creamy, deliciousness! Course 1(me): Braised Pork Shank...amazing! This huge chunk of meat was so rich, juicy, and flavorful. Fall off the bone tender! The tomato sauce added a nice zest and robust flavor. The accompanying mashed potatoes were a perfect match. Course 2(wife): Trout Almondine...amazing! A generous whole trout full of moist, flaky, citrus infused white meat. Course 2(me): Crepes Suzette...love! The orange liquor sauce was delightful! Course 3(wife) Hazelnut Chocolate...EPIC! So rich, so decadent, so chocolately! Better than my Crepes Suzutte! Delicious and delightful. The restaurant is small and seating is very intimate. But the food is absolutely fantastic!!! After reading several mediocre reviews about the duck, I decided to go for it anyway. Am I glad I did! The canard de confit was so well prepared. The mustard sauce was light and luscious, and the brussels sprouts paired beautifully. And that cosmo was a nice stiff drink. We came back for restaurant week and I felt like I fell in love with them again. Gone for couple times over the years and I really appreciate the update to the menu. For starters we got the lobster bisque and the crab rillettes which were both new to us, and WOW they were both so so good. Steak frites (the fries are amazing) and the duck confit (also a favorite of ours) for entree. And for desert we got the dark chocolate hazelnut (I think) cake along with the crepe. I don't personally care for the crepe but the chocolate cake was probably one of the best I've had - and within one piece of cake you can taste so many variations of chocolate. Another highlight was the butter that came with their bread. We had such a good time and we're so full afterwards. Definitely a must try during restaurant week but we will be back much sooner than the next restaurant week! Service is always lovely and the atmosphere is very intimate. Cute little place, attentive staff, decent food, but they charge for bread and butter, and that for me is just so offputting. They can easily roll those expenses into the main courses. It's petty and it sets the wrong tone for the meal. The endive and frisée salad was excellent, the duck was pretty bland, and the chocolate mousse was delicious. read more

Celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary at La Bonne Table and it was such a great experience. I don't think we've ever had French cuisine before but after this meal, I can't wait to come back for more. They even gave us a complimentary glass of champagne each to celebrate our love! For starters we had the French Onion soup which was the best I've tasted! Then we had a slice of Formage with bread, followed by escargo. It was my first time I tried escargot and this was so good. It was flavored with garlic butter and a puff pastry hat on top. We ended up getting one more appetizer which was the Pate and that was one of the best I've had as well! For the main dish, my wife had some mussels in lobster sauce that included chunks of lobster and I had the pork chop with a creamy mushroom sauce and over Gratin potato's. Hands down one of the best French restaurants in San Diego. Tucked in the outskirts of Hillcrest, la bonne table serves authentic French cuisine but with American sizes. Everything is absolutely delicious, beautifully seasoned, and the experience took me back to Paris. You must call in for reservation or make a reservation online. The restaurant it self is small and the space was converted from a private home to a restaurant. Which in itself offers a very unique, intimate, and cozy dining experience. The servers were wonderful. Expect to spend around $60-70 per person for a full experience but I promise you will walk out super full and satisfied! This is an intimate dining experience so unless you plan to rent the whole space out, this is not a place for big parties. Parking can be tricky with street parking (meter parking). read more

We tried La Bonne Table for the first time during San Diego restaurant week. We had a great time and really commend the restaurant and staff efforts for making sure all their guests have a wonderful time while dining! We brought our baby with us during dinner. She was in a stroller and I checked with the restaurant ahead of time to see if the stroller would fit at the table. The staff checked in with me and made sure the accommodations they could provide were fitting - they didn't have a high chair but could accommodate our stroller. We were immediately sat down when we entered and immediately waited on upon sitting down. Best service ever. We ordered: 1.) Starters: Salad d Endives and Rilletes de Saumon 3.) Entree: Steak Frites and Confit de Canard 5.) Dessert: Crepes Suzette and Chocolate Mousse The food was delicious! Our favorites were the salad and confit de canard (duck). If you are looking for a boozy dessert, crepes suzette is your pick. Also, the drinks here looked amazing! Pretty much every customer ordered a cocktail.
