    Delicious desserts
    Kristine L.

Third time I have been here for brunch in the last year..I love love the ambience and set up. Great food choices and service..But.. when I went last Sunday at about 11am or so the Asian food was pretty old and hard..maybe I got the last before the refills.. although it was two entrees the noodles and shumai. The gentlemen at the omelette station was the best! The desserts were fabulous as well.. I was impressed because most desserts at a buffet type brunch are usually just OK.

Sunday Champagne Brunch: Friends making a toast
    Faye L.

This review is for their Sunday Champagne Brunch... One of the most memorable things a friend once told me was that being a friend (in his circle) meant that I was in their 'flock'. That the way a shepherd takes care of their sheep, his friends take care of each other. I thought that was one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Well two of those friends are leaving SD soon so I wanted to plan something nice. So a group of 5 sheep got together last rainy Sunday for one last possible get together. I was sold about their Sunday Champagne Brunch by the menu they have online. - $45/pp - includes ts traditional champagne, Mimosas, Bloody Marys (!!) and Margaritas (!!) - array of artisan cheeses will be offered on table side - new Juice Bar composed of locally grown freshly squeezed fruits and vegetables - caviar, oysters, crab claws, prime rib, sushi: did I mention CAVIAR?! - Chocolate fountain!!! Crepe and waffle station I figured each one of us could easily get our $45 worth with the menu that I repeatedly studied last week. For example, friend#1 doesn't like brunch stuff per se but she loves drinks so I calculated that she would need to drink 'x' amount of drinks and eat 'x' amount of oysters in order to get her $45 worth. Or friend#2 would need to eat two orders of prime rib, drink 8 fresh juices, and make 3 trips to chocolate fountain in order to get HIS $45 worth. Something like that. I had it ALL calculated in my head. To summarize: (go to their online menu to see list of items served that day) - Bloody Mary tasted a bit too clamato for me but the others at the table loved it. Nice presentation and they don't skimp on the booze - Margarita : A.W.E.S.O.M.E!! Our server even asked me if I wanted a double shot of tequila in this drink (which my overly protective friend said 'no she does not'). There's fresh lime, tequila, orange juice, sweet & sour mix (I think) in this beautifully presented drink. Even the salt lined rim of the glass tasted good! - I thought someone would be squeezing fresh veggies and fruits for the Juice Bar but that's not the case. There's 3 juices to choose from in that department : I believe they're 1) carrot & ginger; 2) kale, spinach, green apple; and 3) pineapple and acai berry. - most of their hot food items weren't very good. Wellington of Salmon with lobster sauce, chicken breast with mushrooms, scallop/shrimp pot pie, and both eggs benedict were all pretty bad - I've never been a caviar person because it always tasted a bit strange to me. But when it's included in a Champagne Brunch, you betcha I'm gonna try it and try LOADS of it (I figured it was the most expensive item that day so this would be the item I would make them go broke on... that was *my* smart stupid thinking). I topped my little blini with creme fraiche, chives, and a big ol' dollop of black caviar (the name of the caviar wasn't displayed). It looked pretty but just tasted too fishy for me. Maybe this is the way it's supposed to taste and I, for lack of better judgement, don't really know my caviar. So perhaps there are those out there that would really love this dish. But all I can say is that no one at the table went back for seconds for this caviar. - Jonah crab claws: the version here is semi cracked and there's a crab claw cracker on each table. But dang man, these were a pain in the buttocks to crack. The shell is super hard and even though they partially crack it, it still takes some intense work to get to the crab meat. And not sure if you've cracked a crab claw recently, but it isn't exactly a non-messy type of chore. Needless to say, I had a few crab pieces in my hair and dress - oysters were fresh but not the meatiest of oysters - Sashimi: It's not that this wasn't good. It's just that it wasn't amazing for what you think you'd be getting at The Westgate Hotel for a Champagne Brunch. My second serving of the hamachi sashimi was questionable : the slice of fish looked unhealthy - my 2 favorite items: Prosciutto (perfect amount of salt and fat) and Duck breast with walnut truffle vinaigrette sauce - crepe and waffle station: VERY GOOD. Everyone said this was the highlight of their meal - Chocolate fountain: they have strawberries, mini donuts, marshmallows for you to run through the chocolate waterfall ! - valet is $3 for first two hours, $4/hour thereafter The restaurant and 2nd floor felt eerily quiet, old, and haunted house-ish to me (I don't mean this in a negative way - I'm just a scared-y mouse when it comes to this type of stuff). Service was attentive and we never felt rush. It was a fun meal : not b/c the food was all that great but b/c of my flock that beautiful, rainy March afternoon...

My mission is to try every brunch place in San Diego so this one was on the list. This place is obviously on the upper scale (no flip flops allowed) type of place. It is located on the second floor of The Westgate Hotel. I feel as though the set-up is weird because once the elevator door opens, you are standing right in front of the buffet area. You have to make a left turn to go to the hostess stand to check in. They offer green juice and two other juices. The selections aren't big so for the price - I was expecting more. I can't tell you what my favorite item was because none of it really stood out... maybe some sushi items? But just don't get Unagi (Eel) there because it's cold and taste like rubber (GROSS) Overall, probably a one visit type thing. It wasn't impressive....

We've been to the Sunday brunch buffet more times than I can count. This is one of our favorite places to celebrate special occasions and to take our out of town visitors. At $45 per person, it's the best brunch deal in town *and* you get to feel fancy while you stuff your face to live piano music in a rococo inspired dining room. Having said that--please dress appropriately! There's always a handful of ragamuffins that taint the frou frou ambiance. (As far as the price is concerned, it should be noted that for special occasions, such as their Mother's Day brunch which we attended recently, the price usually shoots up to $65; the food offerings remain mostly the same except its way more crowded and the service is worse). Over the years, the food selection has been consistently impressive. The spread ranges from salads, seafood, hot dishes (which, given its a buffet, are actually lukewarm), made to order breakfast items (i.e. omelets, crepes, waffles), carving stations, and an array of little desserts and a chocolate fountain with strawberries, marshmallows, biscotti, and mini donuts for dipping. As with any buffet, quality and creativity are sometimes limited and compromised because the food needs to sit for long periods of time and be continuously refilled, but they do their best. My go-to favorites include the crab cakes, fried shrimp plate, the ceviches, scalloped potatoes, and gnocchi. I always order a crepe with berries, as well as a waffle, and I try one of every dessert--except for the brioche chocolate chip bread pudding, of which I have at least two servings even if I've already stuffed myself to the point of nausea. Bottomless mimosas are a must for us, but they also offer margaritas, bloody marys, and champagne. There's also coffee and tea if you don't feel like getting sloshed at 11am on a Sunday. While this may be the best brunch in town for the money, I have been irked by the level of service we've received over the past year or so. For instance, I *always* have to ask our server(s)--usually repeatedly--for crab crackers, for their table-side cheese service, for the table-side pastry/muffin/bread service, for mimosa refills, and for plate clearing. Its incredibly annoying and disappointing, but I try to eat and drink my feelings instead of giving the staff major "tude." So, if this is your first visit, just keep in mind that they do offer these table-side services & they are not to be missed! You might have to ask your server multiple times, but the gouda and croissants are worth the uncomfortable nagging. Though there is certainly room for improvement, this brunch is definitely secured as one of our favorite places to celebrate with the people we love.

I ate ramen for a week so I can try Le Fontainebleu's Sunday Brunch Buffet. Seriously. Self-supporting College Student here.. At $42 a person, it's not a meal you can have very often but it's definitely worth it! I liked most of the things I tried but a few were a little disappointing. For example, I was really looking forward to the lamb but it was so dry! I didn't even finish it and I loveee lamb! And the salmon didn't have much flavor, even with the lobster sauce. However, everything else was really good. I had so much caviar. I must have finished half the bowl myself. You have to try it with the blinis! One week later and I'm still dreaming of caviar. Also, the prime rib, zaru soba, crab cakes, and cocktail shrimp were so good. They didn't have a ton of selections but most of them were really good. The dessert station had everything I could ever want (Crepes! Creme Brulee! Chocolate Fountain!). Did I also mention that you get mimosas with your meal? Also, everything about this buffet was so pretty. The food (check my pictures), the decor, and they even had a pianist! Anyway, I'd definitely come back here again when I feel like rewarding myself. I love buffets, especially good ones. And now I don't have to wait to go to Vegas to get my grub on.

I must have eaten almost a dozen oysters :P

You pay for what you get. So fresh. Such great quality. Unlimited drinks. What more can you ask for? I came for Easter brunch but it seems that this is the standard for all Sunday's. I will definitely be back again. The only thing I'll change for next time is to make my reservation for some time around Noon. There was only a 2:30 left, we were seated with about a 15 minute wait, and then they started packing up the buffet at 4 pm. We were full and satisfied but it would have been nice to pace ourselves a little more and enjoy company instead of being rushed out.

    Christmas Dinner Buffet
    Yilian P.

Buffets these days can get quite expensive, and with this place charging $52 for a dinner buffet, it was still definitely worth it! Le Fontainebleau is in the beautiful Westgate hotel and when I went there for a office Christmas dinner, the place went all out with the Christmas decorations. Complete with a live pianist, ice sculpture, chocolate fountain, and a make your own crepe station, I was in heaven. The best part of the buffet has to be the lobsters, it's declawed for you!! All you can eat sashimi was awesome, all you have to do is to ask the sushi chef to cut you some salmon or tuna instead of making you a roll. While the buffet is expensive, I think it's still a great deal compared to San Diego's restaurant week where each person goes for $40 a head and sometimes you leave still feeling empty. Nothing beats all you can eat, especially at this seafood buffet, so save up and splurge a little! Oh and go with a date, the dinner ambiance is so romantic, and the lights are so dimmed that if you go with a bunch of guys, you might feel a little bit weird. Well... who cares, the food will make up for it!!

Had a great time with my family during Le Fountainbleau's Christmas dinner! Decor was superb. Food was good. I couldn't get enough of the Lamb Cheeks and smoked brisket. The dessert room was pretty awesome- ice cream was so yummy! They had a little of everything- from sushi to carving stations. The service was friendly and attentive. We'll be back! Thank you to the staff who worked through the holiday.

My friends and I had a wonderful brunch at The Westgate. Our service was excellent. There were seafood, pastries, crepe station. I was sad because I was hoping for crab legs. The eggs Benedict is good. The sushi station is okay too. Will come back again. Maybe they'll have crab legs.

Table setting that your oh-so-proper grandmother would approve of
    Katie W.

My internal thoughts when I read that there was a dress code: Dang it...you mean I can't wear something with elastic? I have to try to look cute while stuffing my face and then sucking in my stomach afterward? Ugh... When you arrive, you understand why there is a dress code. The inside of the hotel is very old-school classy with large chandeliers and an old-money feel to it. There is also a live piano player while you eat and the lobby has a harpist. More importantly though, is the food worth it? Yes! The quality itself is very good for a buffet. For example, they don't serve regular ol' previously frozen giant crab legs that you see at normal buffets. Their crab claws looked like they were stone crab claws that high end seafood restaurants serve. The desserts really wowed me too, and I have a huge sweet tooth. They didn't just serve regular creme brulee. Their creme brulee was lavender Tahitian vanilla bean creme brulee that was so good it made my eyeballs roll to the back of my head. The service was fantastic! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Did every item blow me away? No. The cheese board selection was very small (about 3 cheeses), and I didn't think some items were even worth it (wedge salad, cheese tortellini, etc.). I also wanted a latte, but the waiter said espresso drinks weren't included. For $50, it would've been nice if they had brought me a latte since they have an espresso bar. I feel like this is one of those dining experiences that you should try in San Diego. Yes, it's pricey, but if you do some research you'll see that it's not much more than some other high-end hotel buffets.

    Happy Birthday!!

This place is super fancy. Came here with my fiance and her friends for her birthday. I was very satisfied with the food and the services. I highly recommend trying out this place for your Sunday brunch. I would definitely come here again.

The beef was rendered down beautifully and had great color and was very tender to the touch. The beef offered exceptional preparation and was an absolute pleasure to eat with the Cabernet sauce. Well done chef. I was treated to a house soufflé which was excellent. It hit all the notes: light, soft, and airy, but packed with flavor. The sauce that came along with it was very good. Ive been here twice now and heres my honest review on this place:…read more Ambiance: More formal than casual but definitely leaning more towards casual-formal than formal-formal -- the place itself has a nice vibe with an island bar in the center surrounded by high tops, tables, and booth + table seating. If I had to describe it in one word I would say "aesthetic". Service: Great, the servers check in a decent amount of the time and you can usually flag them down if you need anything Food: This is where my review goes downhill. The only thing I would say is worth getting at this restaurant is the baguette with butter (no add-ons, caviar or whatever they have going on at the time -- its just not worth it -- when I got the black truffle on my butter the shavings were so thin they might as well have not been there since it made no difference in flavor) The tamarind wings are one dimensional -- the wings are fried well, but lack in flavor, its straight *overwhelming* tamarind with no other notes. House made egg noodles lack any sort of noticeable flavor, most of it stemming from the Lap Cheong but most definitely not worth the price tag that it holds ($36) The dry aged duck is where I feel the most "scammed out of". Ive gotten this both times i've been here. Both times its been overly salty. I understand its dry-aged, but the saltiness overtakes any other flavor of the duck. The sauces try to make up for the lack of flavor but they just cant carry the entire dish on their own -- especially not for a $100 price tag. The first time I ordered this dish (Jan 2026) the duck came out cold-warm, and the second time I came here (July 2026) it came out warmer.

The environment and ambience provides the sort of cozy, intimate experience that is REALLY tough to find these days- there are a limited number of tables and I felt unusually cared for. A seamless part of this environment- and a central reason for my enthusiasm- is the exceptional quality of service I've consistently received (from both Victor and Yo- I hope I am spelling their names correctly). Both servers were warm, welcoming, charming, and perfectly attentive. And finally, of course I need to mention the meal- in my view, simply flawless (including, during this last meal, an appetizer [escargots], two mains [duck and pork chop], and a dessert [chocolate mousse] among the two of us). I'll certainly be returning in the future and I feel really grateful for the experience. Thank you!!

We had our Appetizer, main course , and dessert but I'm just gonna review what we had for our main entree since my wife already did a full review of what we had here. So I had the Cassoulet, I always enjoyed this dish because it has Variety of meats on it, taste-wise it's the same as the other Cassoulets I had in French restaurants we've been to, just like ordering this because of the Duck, Sausage and Pork Belly. My Son had a Pork Chop and it's a big one, it has a delicious mushroom sauce. My wife had the Duck Confit, the duck has a nice crispy skin and juicy inside, with delicious creamy sauce. Nice French restaurants to come back to.

This is probably the longest overdue review I have ever written, but at this point, not writing it…read morealmost feels selfish because I would very much like to always be able to get a table here. But alas, Carbon Angela's Kitchen deserves every flower, every reservation, every "you have to try this place" text thread, and every bit of love. This place has become one of my absolute favorite hidden gems in San Diego. Easily top five for me, and as someone who dines out a lot for a living, that is not a casual statement. There are places you like, places you recommend, and then there are places that start to feel woven into your actual life. Carbon Angela's Kitchen is that for me. Angela is truly the heart of this place. She has this way of making you feel like you are not just coming in for dinner, but being welcomed into something she deeply cares about. And Emanuele is absolutely part of that magic too. Together, they have built something that feels warm, generous, soulful, and so special. They feel like long-lost friends and family now, and I am honestly just so proud of them and all they are creating. The food is the kind that makes you want to order with the whole table in mind. The griglia mista is hands down one of the best investments you can make if you are dining with a group. It is the meat platter, it is the moment, and it is absolutely worth ordering. Four to five people can split it, especially if you are also doing appetizers, salad, wine, and a few extra things for the table. It is such a perfect nod to what Carbon was before Angela took over, when the space leaned more BBQ, but now it feels beautifully married with Angela's warmth, Italian influence, and the kind of hospitality that makes the whole meal feel like an experience. And please do not sleep on the rest of the menu. The short rib is fire. The arancino trio is always a yes. The eggplant croquette? Obsessed. The crespelle? So good. The Everything Salad is my favorite salad on the menu, and the street corn should never, under any circumstances, be skipped. I said what I said. The wine selection is top tier, the appetizers are memorable, and the whole place has that rare magic of feeling cozy, intentional, and completely unpretentious. You can come for a low-key dinner, a girls' night, a celebration, or one of those "we just need a really good meal and a really good glass of wine" kind of evenings. And the back patio? Perfect for an evening under twinkling lights. It is one of those spaces that just begs for a long table, good conversation, clinking glasses, and the kind of night that accidentally turns into a core memory. They also have catering menus available, which is very important information to keep in your back pocket if you are hosting anything soon. What Angela has built is honestly something to behold. One of the hardest-working restaurateurs doing the dang thing in a city like San Diego, and now opening Bedda across the way too? I am in awe and wonder watching it all unfold. It takes so much courage, grit, taste, excellence, and heart to build what they are building, and you can feel all of it in the room. Carbon Angela's Kitchen is a true labor of love, a hidden gem, and one of those places I will keep cheering for again and again. Go hungry. Order the griglia mista. Get the Everything Salad. Do not skip the street corn. Share Share Share, so you can try a little bit of everything and do a tried and true family style meal, you won't regret it.

It's served Family-Style and is enough for 3-4 people which was only $60. The restaurant is small and charming with a window into the kitchen. They make their pasta fresh (be sure to include your pasta texture preference when ordering (Al Dente or Softer, etc.) We were greeted by Angela (the owner) and she made us feel welcome (as if we were dining over a friend's home which I absolutely loved). She started us off with some fresh baked Focaccia which had herb + cheese baked into the top (of course it was delicious). We added an appetizer called Crespelle which was a really yummy spin on a Manicotti made the right way (with a Crespelle). The salad was fresh and tasty. We order the Rigatoni Sugo which has a Tomato based sauce and assorted meats (Meatballs, Sausage, Cubes of meat) and was delicious along with the meats as well. We also added the Picanha Steak Entree with the Brie Fondue and that was so different while being soooo yummy. We enjoyed some wine with our meal and we finished with this really delicious Bavarian Cream Filled Napoleon with a Berry Coulis (desserts do change so check with restaurant to see what they have available the day you want to visit).. We can't wait to come back and try their Grigliata Mista (Meat Feast for 3-4 people).

This place exceeded every one of them. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Wolf in the Woods feels like a hidden European café you'd stumble upon while traveling. Sitting outside beneath the umbrellas with a cocktail, watching the neighborhood stroll by. It felt like a little corner cafe in Paris. Then the food arrived. Every plate was beautifully presented, but the real magic was in the creativity of the flavors. The combinations were unexpected, yet every one worked. Every dish had me wondering how on earth someone came up with these pairings in the first place. The Sweet Corn & Piñon Soup deserves a standing ovation. We literally stopped talking after the first spoonful. Rich, savory, slightly sweet, comforting and completely unexpected all at the same time. Both of our eyes rolled back in our heads. The Beef Tataki completely surprised me. The outside had a delicate seared crust, the inside cut like butter, and the citrus pairing made me rethink what flavors belong together. And the mushroom and polenta dish? The mushrooms had an incredible texture--like savory little pieces of mushroom jerky. I would have happily bought a pound of them just to snack on. Every dish felt like it was taking me somewhere I'd never been before, yet somehow felt familiar at the same time. Wolf in the Woods creates an unforgettable experience.
