I've had this place bookmarked forever, but was to busy to ever have a chance to come check this place out. It's not that far from where I work, so I finally stopped in to check it out. Walking in, the place is small, but very colorfully decorated. Mexican music was playing and there were a few tables to sit at. I talked to a nice man who showed me the lunch orders, and I went with the two beef tacos, rice and refried beans. I was hungry, but not dinner plate hungry. When I got home to eat, the food was good! I wasn't a huge fan of their soft taco shells, but they were good none the less. Refried beans were a bit runny, but tasty, and the rice was good as well. My bill was about $7 and change, and worth a nice quick stop if needed. I'm glad I checked this place out. Not the biggest but delicious none the less. The botanas were great, well seasoned ground beef but the steak tacos were flavorless. Chicken in the enchiladas was so so but the sauce was good. The prices were high - especially given the hole in the wall feel of the place. Also, they don't serve tap water. Started with the asada fries with shredded chicken, medium sized guacamole, chips and salsa comes with our meal. 3 grilled chicken tacos on soft corn, 1 red shredded chicken tostada, 1 shredded chicken enchilada Rojas, 1 shredded chicken soft corn taco. A mango and mandarin Jarrito Mexican soda. They have a few different flavored Cholula hot sauces. The asada fries are cheesy and good, nice riff on the Botana, replaced the beef with chicken, think shredded chicken would be even better. Lots of jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole and goodness. Their medium guacamole is tasty and has a nice flavor and slight heat. Es muy sabrosa! The two salsas that come with the chips both seem pretty mild, the one is made with roasted tomatoes, looks more green. The roasted tomato salsa seems to be hotter and may have some jalapeños in there, see traces of seeds in it. The grilled chicken tacos were so tasty. My shredded chicken taco was good as well. The tostada was yummy but my favorite was the shredded chicken enchilada Rojas best. Loving their Roja sauce, could put that on everything. I put the lettuce, cheese and sour cream but I think all of my a la carte items would have been even better with lettuce, sour cream, cheese, onions and cilantro on it, next time. The one thing I would say that kept it from 5 for us, the chips weren't bad, neither the salsa, all could have been better and the chicken, grilled or shredded were all too salty for me. The service was friendly and attentive and we felt very cosy here. They brought the food out to us as it finished. They even cleaned up after us before we left. I get why this place is so well liked. My husband said their chicken tacos are as good her as his favorite place in Warren, that's quite a compliment. I liked all of my a la carte items here better. It doesn't even feel like you are at a fast food counter order Mexican here, it's small, but you will quickly forget as the hum of Latino canciones playing in the background. It feels like Cinco de Mayo here suddenly. A Margarita sounds good right about now. We will no doubt be back here soon enough. They do offer some beer options too. read more

It's simply outstanding in its own quiet way. Not fancy, not splashy, but so, so good. I love being able to get grilled vegetables tacos and customize them with avocado slices thanks to their killer web app. I love the Fideo soup (vegetarian!) as the cold weather comes. The refried beans are smooth and creamy and the rice is piquant. I just can't say enough about this modest storefront. I'm so lucky to have them near. read more

Well, I'm not one to write many reviews, so you know this has to be an issue with me. I usually get nachos when I go to Mexican restaurants, as I did here last Friday (large Mexican nachos). My wife got the Barria dinner, which was fine. I love to go to Poncho Villa (15 and Ryan) for their nachos, as they are my favorite, but we got a carry out from here because we were on that side of town. I would go here once in a while based on convenience... but absolutely not any more. The nachos I ordered were actually more expensive than Poncho Villa, where I consistently have leftovers enough for at least another meal... loaded with toppings. I don't expect every Mexican restaurant to be the same way, but this was by far the biggest rip off of nachos I ever ordered. Well, my nachos were a bowl of chips for $18 (which was $3 more than their online menu on their website indicated BTW), not even enough for 1 meal, let alone leftovers. I couldn't believe it.. I thought there was a mistake. There was a sprinkling of meat and cheese on top, and just a bunch of plain chips underneath. I called the restaurant to explain the issue, and they said I'd get a call back by the following Monday. Monday came and went, and no call, so I called on Tuesday. I spoke with a gentleman who said he remembered my order, and that they always have problems when someone has a special order... all I did was minus some toppings, going with just meat, cheese, and onions. Funny, no other Mexican restaurant I order nachos from has a problem when cusomers minus topping off their nachos, so why do they? Well, the guy I spoke with said something about someone being out of town or something, and proceeded to tell me that they don't plan on making things right with me. I explained that I have gone to the restaurant on occasion (never had a problem previously) and that I wouldn't be back if they thought that what they provided me was acceptable. He said "Thank you" and hung up on me. Mind you, I wasn't abrasive in any way... no cursing or yelling, etc. I have owned a couple businesses throughout my career, and understand the concept of customer service. Obviously these people don't, and it is my wish that they suffer the consequences of their actions. I would never consider stepping foot in this place again, and I hope this review encourages people to do the same. read more

The first time I went to La Botana I said this isn't authentic that was about 4 years ago. My brother told me the food is amazing a few months ago and I said no I tried this place and it was trash! He said go back and give it another try it's good good! So being curious because it's close to my home I went and gave it another chance. Man, am I glad I did! The carne asada burrito made me feel like I was back in california! The berria tacos were so fire! The salsa was flaming hot with a great flavor! The Al pastor quesadilla was unreal! The guacamole made me feel like I was in Acapulco. The prices were kind of high but inflation is not our friend these days! The food is amazing and you must give second chances in life and this is the place I'm glad I have given a second chance. Since I have given them the second chance I now go there 1-2 times a week and they haven't disappointed me at all. They are very friendly and accommodating. Had dinner there for the first time the other day. I chose the large nacho, which was average - nothing special. The cheese tasted like the kind you might squirt out of a can. I was also disappointed at the price ($18) and that the nacho was served in an aluminum foil pan, which seemed kind of tacky. Oddly, all of the other diners around me had regular plates. Seeing the super high Yelp ratings, I suggested to my coworkers that we try this place next in our Troy restaurant tour. We got there a little past noon, and thankfully there was a table available for the four of us. It's a pretty small place, so it would not be good for big groups. At this place, you order at the counter and they bring chips and drinks to your table after you order, and also bring your entrees. Service was prompt. I ordered the tamales lunch special with pork inside and only rice, no beans. The tamales were really good with the sour cream and salsa they provided. They're not very large, but it was a good portion for lunch. I was not a fan of the rice. While I like the fact that there were vegetables in it (like carrots, peas, and green beans), it looked to be minute rice and it smelled/tasted kind of funky. A couple of my coworkers ordered crunchy tacos, but they were disappointed because they used store bought, packaged shells rather than making them fresh. The chips and salsa that came before the meals were solid - not too salty or greasy. While we all said we liked our meals overall, there are much better Mexican options in the area. Don't waste your money!! CRIMINALLY overpriced on their tamales!!!! Total extortion!! My wife bought some just to have at Christmas. I can see $20-25/dozen for a good quality tamale. These are NOT them!! The chicken ones were VERY dry and had an odd flavor. They weren't very appetizing. The pork ones were fatty. Not much meat inside and almost half of the meat was fat. They weren't very flavorful or appetizing either. The cheese and jalapeño ones had a good flavor, just not enough. The ratio was off. Too much masa on all of them. More masa than filling. If you're going to charge that much money for tamales, they should be spectacular. These fell way short of that. You can buy tamales that are twice as good with a lot more filling in them down south. Skip this place. Find somewhere else for tamales!!! read more

Was looking for a Mexican restaurant for some birrias since my regular place closes early on Sunday's and we came across this place. We ordered a variety of things as this was our first time here and wanted to try a little of everything. We got chorizo tacos, shrimp tacos, flautas, fajitas and asada fries. Nothing we ordered had the wow factor would make me want to come back. Everything was heavy and overly greasy, even the fajitas - which I got a combination of chicken, steak and shrimp (all of 4 pieces). The chicken was rubbery, steak was overly chewy and shrimp was under seasoned. The flautas were chip your teeth hard and significantly lacked flavor. Their asada fries, were Americanized - fries were soggy, steak was hard - just not pleasant. I've had birrias at many different authentic Mexican restaurants from California and La Botanas were nothing like that. Theirs were soggy, not crispy and fried - which caused corn tortilla to basically fall apart in your hand when dipping in the sauce. Definitely underwhelmed across the board. I asked for extra limes and was told that there were some in the tacos, I opened it and there was literally 1 like wedge for all 3 tacos! So I reiterated that I'd like some more, which I don't believe she was happy to accommodate based on her change of attitude. Next, each taco cost $3plus - for your regular traditional taco (corn tortilla, cilantro, onion, choice of protein) - which was also underwhelming in the flavor department. Chorizo was hard and dry and again shrimp were flavorless. I was even charged $3 for a Jarrito, which any where I've gone before is usually $1-$1.50. I definitely won't come back and will stick to my regular restaurant that tastes like authentic California Mexican cuisine and can get double the food for the price I paid here. I'm all about supporting local small businesses, especially during these times but overall, this wasn't a pleasant experience. read more

I have heard great things about La Botana, so I was excited to try it. However, the experience left me wishing I had gone to Grand Azteca. We ordered chicken soft tacos, enchilada rojo, and an order of hard shell beef tacos. Everything came with beans and rice. The enchilada was good, though the sauce was underseasoned. The beef taco was fine- nothing notable. The chicken tacos were not good, the chicken was dry and didn't taste very good. The beans with all three meals were runny and had a strange aftertaste. The rice was dry, and clearly not fresh. It was disappointing for sure after hearing so many positive things about them. Maybe it is because of COVID, that they are cutting corners, but we will not go back. read more

It's been a few years since we've been here, and man, we have been missing out. After a long day of housework, we didn't want to cook, and we didn't didn't want to sit at a restaurant. Take out was the way to go. We found their menu online, and made the call. 15-20 minutes later and our order was ready. We order 2 taco salads- one without beans, the birria dinner, and a small queso with chips. I was nervous ordering the 2 taco salads, because somehow the small detail of 'no beans' seems to get lost at many restaurants-- not here though! Not only was the order perfect, they wrote 'no beans' on the box. I really appreciate those little details. Portions sizes are pretty good. After some chips and delicious queso, I couldn't even finish the entire taco salad. You are definitely getting your money's worth here. The service here is great- fast and friendly. Fine with that if the food is very good. It was like I said, better than average. Ambiance very plain. You actually go up to the register to order. Great pics of the food to choose from. Not $$$. Very friendly, efficient staff though I must say. We started with nachos. I thought they were ok. Had queso as well with warm tortillas. Was good. Queso was funny. Fresh warm chips and salsa was given. It was good. Dinner had fajitas, were not that pleasing to the eye. But ok tasting. Quesadilla was a bit dry. The chimichanga was excellent though. Obviously, fried. But tasted of fresh oil. So that was nice. Accompaniments of the lettuce, cheese, and sour cream was good. So were the rice and beans. For dessert, we had Mexican Fried ice cream.
