We were excited to visit Grand Castor, especially after hearing about their brunch menu, only to be disappointed to learn they no longer offer it. The decor, however, is undeniably Instagram-worthy, and we were amused to discover that their lawyer has ensured a quirky homage to Ron Jeremy prominently displayed in the restaurant--a fun and unexpected touch! He wrote it into their contract. LOL. The service was quick and friendly, but the food didn't live up to expectations. My tortilla soup was essentially broth-less, and the tuna on my salad didn't seem fresh--I left half of it behind. The beef tacos, which should be renamed "hamburger tacos with unmelted cheese," fell flat even with the kid, who didn't finish one. I came here about a month ago, so excited since it's been months since last coming here. I was craving nachos + trying their new brunch menu. I arrived on a Sunday morning near 11:30 and was the second table to sit down. There was no more brunch menu, the service was super slow (it took 15+ minutes just to get water and another 20 for the server to come back and take orders), and the nachos were subpar to say the least. I was planning to order tacos, but our waiter recommended trying the pizza since that's their specialty. I created my own, and it was good. And one of the people in my party order this spicy burrito but when I said it was hot it was so hot that you couldn't even enjoy it and then the server had the nerve to give a her a hard and said they couldn't take it off the bill and give her something different even though she only took 1 bite. We enjoyed it! Only complaint the times are not served as indicated on the menu. Example: menu says lime and cilantro rice; it's lime rice and tastes like white rice. Very basic. The donuts indicate Mexican chocolate and caramel as dipping sauces but it only came with caramel. The caramel was cold too; that's a no no with a warm donut. I wasn't told these things before ordering and had to ask once they came to table. The chocolate chip cookie was nothing special. Crispellis's has theeee best chocolate chip cookies ever; always ask for them to be served warm or heat it up at home! Delicious! The elote pizza was so delicious! Had been waiting to try this one out and turns out they hold a family feud (opinionated) style sporcle event every Tuesday 6-8pm so went there with a team.. just for the ambience I will go there again, it is so cool out there. Service was pretty good too, they end their happy hour around 6 so the staff was on top of collecting last minute orders before they go back normal price.. Our waitress was very helpful too in terms of suggesting her recommendations which i definitely liked for someone being confused all the time between different items. The main items at Gran Caster are kind of weird. Some of them are really delicious like the rib appetizer. Some of them are a little bit strange. I don't really understand the theme of the restaurant. The service is usually pretty good. People seem to love the mac & cheese, but I have a big fan. Very cute and trendy place in Troy! Went this past weekend but they were understaffed and the 3 people working there were very sweet and kept us updated if anything was going to be delayed. I got the shrimp and chicken tacos which were flavorful! Unfortunately the tea latte was a little cold but I think it's because our waiter also had to make all of ours and just got delayed since it was busy so definitely not her fault. I stopped in with an out of town co-worker for an early dinner. First, the ambiance has a very cool vibe with a large round fireplace in the center, couches and armchairs. We sat at a little two top not far from the fireplace. We started with margaritas, ancho chile blood orange for me, thyme pear for my co-worker. Mine was delicious. I loved the hint of spice and sweet of the blood orange. I could also taste both the thyme and pear of the other, neither flavor was overpowering, I'd like more pear. Co-worker ordered tacos, I ordered the burrito with carnitas because it had cactus in it! We both enjoyed our meal. Server was attentive. Unique ambiance. I wish the flavor profiles of the items were stronger so I could taste cactus, etc. Overall, I would not hesitate to return. read more

The first time I came here years ago this place was really great. We love Union Joints and go to Honcho regularly, in fact we were at Honcho a couple months ago and it was like a party. So many people on both sides of the building, really festive atmosphere. We came here on a Saturday night. Typical Saturday nights, restaurants are packed and you cannot get in without an hour or more wait. We arrived during prime time, and maybe two other tables were occupied and a couple people were at the bar. We called ahead that we were arriving and put in for a reservation, but no one was manning the host station and we waited about ten minutes before someone had a chance to seat us. I do love the look of this place, big fire place in the middle, fun decor. But when I went to the restroom most of the stalls were unoccupied but were locked. One stall had toilet paper and one did not. The sinks did not work well. One had hand soap, and one barely had any left. Our waitress was kind but did not check in on us enough, but it was so understaffed perhaps she had too many responsibilities. The prices have gone up so much, you barely get anything for your money, I believe it is even more expensive than Honcho by a few cents, but that makes a difference. The quality of the food has gone down, which is super disappointing since Honcho was sooo good last time. I got a side of rice. It was basically three spoon worths of rice which was flavorful but did not taste fresh, it was a bit hard. I got a side of the famous mac and cheese, that was pretty solid, thank goodness. I had my usual not hot chicken taco. The chicken was tiny and burnt to a black crispness on the outside, not edible. One of the shells was also burnt and there was barely any sauce or pickles. I could not eat it after one bite. It was charred. We also ordered a taco night taco which looked good, but was miniscule. The winner of the night was the meat pizza. It was large, had plenty of toppings, tasted fresh, had great crust, the only item that was worth the price and was leftover. The portions were so small, it would have been better to have stayed home and made my own dinner. The waitress was accommodating but the bill was too expensive for us to return to this location. We will go back to the other restaurants they own next time. read more

I really wanted to like Gran Castor. The menu seemed interesting enough on my pre-trip read, but I found myself sorely disappointed by their lack of dairy-free options. The Lychee tea mocktail was alright and reasonably priced, but I felt the rest of the menu was a bit overpriced. The Sweet Pea guacamole was good, albeit lacking in salt and acid. The peas added an interesting flavor and made it very filling, though. The Bahn Mi taco was poorly named, as it barely resembled Bahn Mi flavors. It was pretty much solid pork with Korean barbecue sauce, but it was the best dairy-free taco option as it required no modification. I ordered the Taco Party platter, which I couldn't modify despite the other two tacos needing significant changes to be dairy-free. Ordering three tacos plus rice and beans without the platter would have cost almost $30. The rice and beans were good, but the salsa verde they provided to replace the dairy on the chicken and beef tacos wasn't enough to give them depth of flavor. The service was a mixed bag. The waitress was patient and made sure my dairy allergy was communicated, which I appreciated. However, she was inattentive despite the restaurant not being busy. She didn't check on how the food was or offer boxes despite us having nearly full plates. I understand customer service is hard, but I found it lacking. The vibes in the restaurant were fun. I liked their cactus art and the fire pit was pretty, but (wo)man cannot feed on vibes alone. For vibes and better tacos, hit up Imperial in Ferndale. read more

It's American Mexican fusion food. I always get the elote pizza. It has the perfect amount of toppings and the sauce on top is tangy with a little spice to it. They have hot sauce available to make it spicier. The crust is soft but with a crunchy outside. The other dish I got was the queso. It was rich and full of flavor. The menu has many options like burritos and tacos as well. Lastly the service is always great! The hostess try their best to seat you quickly. The wait staff is always kind and helpful. The sweet pea guacamole came with an abundance of crispy corn tortilla chips. Both were tasty. The chicken tortilla soup had a spicy kick to it and has a tomatoe-y base vs a liquid broth. Other entrees ordered were Taco night (Dorado style), Pollo Asado (House style) and kids mac & cheese (came with apple slices, black beans & rice). My daughter requested chocolate milk--it was a cinnamon chocolate milk and she seemed to enjoy it--she actually requested seconds! Waitress was attentive and friendly and even assisted in our selections. We came on a Monday during dinner rush--and there was a handful of tables and people seated by the fire. The chips are sourced from somewhere but still made fresh, our waiter told us. The donuts were small but melt in your mouth! Wow! They gave us caramel and chocolate sauce to dip into it. Overall, this place is really cool. The vibe is outstanding. You can see from my picture, they have an awesome fireplace type area in the middle and tables around along with a bar. In the back, there's more seating (not pictured). I'd recommend a reservation since they got busy, even on a Wednesday. The food was good. Best ever? No. But, it's good. We started with the chips and salsa. 3 different types of salsa, all were great. The downfall here was the chips. They tasted like chips you could buy at Kroger. So many opportunities to partner with a local tortilla shop or make their own in house. Next, we got the Elote Special Pizza. This was good - a super unique mix of sauce and corn. Crust was wonderful. The tacos, we got a variety. They were good -- not the best ever, but good. Margaritas were good too! Highly recommend the blood orange and habanero, if they have it. If you love Honcho, but also are looking for something a bit more new, located more centrally in the metro Detroit area in Troy, maybe craving tacos and pizza equally, some happy hour drinks perhaps, then Gran Castor is your PLACE! This place is delicious through and through and if we're being completely honest, I was totally devastated that they remained closed throughout the majority of the pandemic and definitely shed a happy tear when they finally reopened earlier this year. The elote pizza at Gran Castor is the stuff of my dreams and while I'm at it, I want a taco or two as well because they carry all my favorite tacos from Honcho too. The interior space at Gran Castor is so fricken cute and I'm kind of obsessed with the fact that they took over this space after Hooter's closed haha! I love that they have kept the original Hooter's palm trees up outside on their patio space too! :) This building is LONG and as you walk through the entire inside of the restaurant, it's just cute decor after cute decor everywhere you look. My husband and I came back here for dinner. I was excited to see that dinner service was bustling. We put our name in for a two top and we did just a short period of time by the fireplace for our table. The hostess took us to our table in the back room that had zero vibe, a very cold draft and flimsy bar stools. While we waited two spots opened up at the bar so we decided we move up there until they called our name. Waited about 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and say he would be with us as soon as he could. About another 10 minutes goes by and he finally comes back to take our drink order. Bartender takes our drink order and our order for the house salsas (our app while we wait for our table). Drinks came back another 10 minutes later, no chips and salsa. We waited. Mind you still no one has texted us about our table being ready. We decided at this point we should just order our room meals. We ordered our meals which came out in a fairly reasonable time, but still no chips and salsa. Bartender stops by another time to take our food order, food comes out in about 15 minutes and still no sign of the chips and salsa or a text for our table. Food prices have gone up significantly here, with Tacos being around 6 dollars EACH! They are still really tasty but $6 is A LOT for this size of taco with pork shoulder and some pickled veg, c'mon now. Overall, food is still pretty good but the service here is HORRIBLE! We never did get called for our table, never got our chips and salsa, and after I asked him to cancel them, it OF COURSE was still on the bill so I had to wait some more time to have it corrected.
