I made the arguably unwise decision to stop here late in the day on an Easter holiday when pastries were clearly on people's minds and the theme was chocolate eggs. It was a long wait in line. Towards the end of their limited hours, I was pleased that they still had a pretty good selection. They sold out of some things, but I found a robust selection of pastries and a loaf of bread as well, albeit one too big for their slices. With macarons and chocolate on sale as well, they had a lot worth coming for. The cake slices were as rich and smooth as one hopes for a French bakery, but several other pastries met with aplomb as well. We went on Mother's Day, got these two, a coffee eclair and a regular croissant. Spouse said the croissant was better than he expected. My tarts were really good, not overly sweet. My only feedback would be that the chocolate one would be better with strawberries on it (which I added when I got home) my daughter said her croissant was flaky and delicious. My last visit I got a lemon meringue tart and a rhubarb pastry. I can safely recommend all the tarts but rhubarb pastry wasn't my favorite. The staff there are really nice and service was good. Located in the historic Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, La Brioche is in the old Colley Pharmacy location. This location gives them ample seating inside as well as patio seating along Colley Avenue. The service is friendly and efficient. I popped in on a Friday at lunch time and enjoyed a ham and cheese croissant while my Dad had chicken salad on a baguette. Both were delicious. Drinks are available in a refrigerated case include an assortment of sodas and Pellegrino. The cases that hold the sandwiches and pastries look amazing. I ended up with the Apricot cream danish and a blueberry cake with a caramel cappuccino. I know I don't need all these calorie. I had every intention of eating 1/2 and taking the rest home. I ate it all. Americans are doing it all wrong. This is the way sweet treats should be made. Perfectly moist with a hint of sweetness. The coffee was the same. We are so lucky that La Brioche moved to Ghent! The previous location was warm and welcoming, and that has carried over to this one. Located at the former location of the Colley Pharmacy, the wonderful folks at La Brioche have refitted the spot with a full scale bakery churning out the best almond croissants I've had - even in Paris or Nice. The staff is friendly, the large windows allow you to take in the views of Colley Ave even in the winter, and I couldn't imagine a better bakery to take this place. During a group trip to W. Virginia, my SIL and I went out to try to find a place for brekkie for everyone. I found this little bakery and it was so cute inside! Parking can be tight outside and make sure you check the signs. They are all things French and while it's tiny at the county, they are quite organized. You order on the left and make your way around. They have some outdoor seating and seating right inside, but they also gave an upstairs with more seating. The bakery is owned by a husband and wife team. They have a passion for their craft. You can see into the kitchen and view their huge oven. It's pretty cool to see all of the workings. They have countless French pastries, croissant and baguette sandwiches, desserts and coffees/teas. I picked up a could of baguette sandos for the fellas, and of course, some breakfast pastries. We bought many macarons as well. The place is so special, we went back on the day we left to pick up some more. They had these amazing housemate rocher truffle balls! I bought every single one they had. The owner was so happy that I liked them and said that they don't sell that well in Northfolk. I told her she'd be welcome in NY with them any day! They are sooooo good and better than the store version. I also picked up a couple of baguettes for my mother because she appreciates good, crusty French bread. It was the Friday before Christmas, a party to attend and no cake in sight. Got in town on Monday and everyone wanted at least a week to order a cake. I waked into La Brioche hoping to find something I could take to a small family gathering. Well, what gorgeous pastries, cakes, quiches, croissants and more than I can mention were laid out before me. They offered me several choices. I chose a raspberry layered elegant, stunning confection that I picked up the following afternoon. Everyone oohed and aaahhed at the very sight of the colorful, scrumptious sweet. It disappeared quickly. Just as delicious as it looked. I have another event this weekend, I know where I'll be heading! Not sure I've ever had anything mediocre from La Brioche. We have tried several sandwiches, many pastries, the baguettes, loaves of bread.... it's all wonderful. The Italian Baguette sandwich is one of my favorites: filling, but still not too heavy, fresh, filled with flavor. The almond chocolate croissant is my favorite pastry. Very French (although I've never been, so what do I know?!). The ambiance was so nice and quaint. I honestly felt like I was in a Parisian cafe down the street from the Eiffel Tower. It was seriously adorable upstairs & downstairs. My girlfriend and I went for breakfast, and I chose to get just an Apple turnover, as they didn't have oat milk for a coffee (I wanted a full on breakfast, but also really wanted coffee to go with it). I liked it, but I would've liked it slightly heated. My girlfriend got the quiche Lorraine, and the person at the counter said they were still warm, but they weren't, and my girlfriend said they would've also liked it better warm, so that was disappointing. It's like a pilgrimage for those who patronize this bakery: I met wonderful folks shuttled in from nearby senior living in VB. My son and I came to this café for a quick early lunch and we were very disappointed. We ordered chicken salad in a baguette and what we received was thick bread with hardly any filling. The chicken salad was watery, overloaded with onion, and had barely any chicken. It was truly shameful. We also ordered large coffees for seven dollars each, but the size was smaller than a medium. Charge me more if needed, but do not serve a portion so small that even a baby would need more. We will never return and will not recommend this place. read more

My roommate decided to take me to this local bakery she really admires French delicacies such as this where for me I'll be satisfied with eating a Little Debbie Cake so let the critique begin: I chose the cinnamon turnover I think that's what it's called and I went in with having no expectations to avoid disappointment but thoroughly surprised by its taste and for the portion and quality of what you pay for it's a good deal. Definitely not lacking in the cinnamon flavor but not too sweet and has some kind of finish on top to make it appear shiny. They offer more traditional French desserts and SUPER FRESH bread the baguettes are exquisite not to mention huge, if you are a fan of them don't pass up the opportunity. The inside has a very aesthetic display case everything separated by category so if you are in for a more sweet or savory mood it's very easy to navigate. I love that there's an upstairs dining area gives off some pleasant vibes could spend hours in there. Being located in the Neon District, the color is also very fitting. - Vibe - Not sure if they recently renovated, but it's very clean and super bright in the shop, with the delicious treats just glistening behind the glass showcase. La Brioche offers a variety of pastries, macarons, chocolate and other decadent desserts like tarts, cakes and eclairs. They also offer a variety of beverages and sandwiches on their fresh made baguettes. The café has two floors. The main floor has a more modern decor and the upstairs has more of the antique-y furniture and more of the Parisian café vibes. - Service - It's been a hot minute since I've spoken French. I don't get to speak it very often since I left home, but the woman who was helping me was very patient and kind while I conversed and ordered in French. Whew! Merci pour votre patience, Madame! - Noms - To dine in, I had the Pain au chocolat and a Hot Chocolate to wash it down. Yes, yes, I know. I really love chocolate though. Pain au chocolat is my go-to at any bakery if they have it, that and a plain croissant. These items usually sets the standard. The Pain au chocolat had a crispy, yet delicate exterior (I heard this delicate crunch as I bit in...music to my ears) and the inside had the characteristics of a croissant with all those layers! The chocolate was divine and it was actually still melted from the morning bake. It was delicious and I should have gotten more to take home. Merde! (Shit!) The Hot Chocolate was made with milk (such a pet peeve of mine when it is not done with milk) and it was as delightful as the Pain au chocolat. Nice balance of chocolate, milk and sweetness. Of course, I couldn't go home empty handed so I took the following items to go: Plain croissant - perfect! The same thin crispy exterior, yet delicate and interior had all the layers as the Pain au chocolat, but crescent shape obviously! Real croissants should have layers and layers so you can see all the dough that has been folded with butter over and over and over. 2 strawberry tarts - Again, perfect! It had this nice crust with the custard and strawberries. Simple and so delicious! Chocolate tart - Ok, so I saved the best for last. I am kicking myself for not getting a few of these. It was so decadent and creamy. Ugh, I am still thinking about the last bite and how I almost cried that there was none left. I'll just have to go back this week. I've been here several times I really think they are one of the best French bakeries in the area! The almond croissants are so divine. Lots of layers you can taste the butter and almond throughout the croissant. The chocolate croissant is tasty as well. I've tried a few of the desserts all have been exceptional! The chocolate caramel tart is really good luscious golden caramel topped with rich chocolate and a chocolate tart a must have. The meringue is very good as well. There has not been a dessert that I have not liked from here. Let's talk about the fresh bread so good another must have. There's something about warm fresh bread!! The brioche bread is really good as well. I even recommend going here for lunch and getting a chicken salad sandwich you will not be sorry. I've never been to Paris however when I do go I hope it's exactly like this restaurant! If this place was located in Norfolk I would have thought I was in Paris! The atmosphere is so cute and quaint. There are two floors where you can sit and dine at. Upstairs is my favorite because there's a huge window that gets lots or natural lighting and overlooks some of downtown Norfolk. I get freshly baked French baguettes from here as well as a regular cappuccinos. They also bake all types of different breads and treats you can buy as well. My recent visit I decided to try the Italian baguette sandwich and some macaroons which were both fresh and yummy. The owners and staff are incredibly nice and just sweet. So, I was waiting for my tires to get done at Firestone but was hungry and decided to walk to the nearest open food establishment. Tried The High Cup but wasn't my cup of tea. Then I walked to La Brioche. I'm sooo glad I did! A woman walked in right behind me and I let her go first because she knew what she wanted. She told me that EVERYTHING was delicious, so pick anything. The lady behind the counter was French and I told her I'd like a sandwich and asked if the Macarons were French? She said yes... I'm skeptical because it's hard to find REAL French Macarons. Anyone who has had REAL French macarons know how hard it is to get them in the US. I decided to get three (blueberry lavender, citrus, and Hazelnut). I paid for my sandwich, Macarons, and walked out. I took a bit of my sandwich while walking back to Firestone... I was so HAPPY, the bread alone was exactly what you want from a baguette. Flavorful, crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside. Mmmm mmmm mmm. The inside ingredients was soooo fresh and tasty. Italian meets and cheese, including prosciutto, tomato, and lettuce. You could taste each item on their own but also amazing together. I got back to the Firestone, sat down, and finished my sandwich. I pulled out one Macaron at a time, ready to be disappointed. Instead I was wonderfully surprised! REAL French Macarons that would even give Ladurée a run for their money. The flavor comes from the cookie AND the filling instead of blah cookie with the same weird cream in all the middles of every Macaron. Each Macaron had a different vibrant flavor and there was no weird cream in the middle. Instead it was a burst of flavor that was true to name! Blueberry and lavender was bright with berry and mellow with lavender. The citrus was an explosion of bright sunny citrus flavor, what I imagine a bit out of the sun would taste like. The hazelnut nut was exactly what you expect, nutty and creamy without the American Nutella twist of chocolate. This stands all on its own! Would recommend 10 out of 10. I didn't even try any of the other delicacies but will definitely be going back!!! read more

This was a solid win and a good first experience. Authentic French bakery in the Neon district with some great seasonal (it was just after Christmas) and standard items to choose from. All made daily and fresh. Reminded me of the pastries and yummies I got when in Paris! It's simple and cute outside - with tons of street parking around the corner and a few spots in front. Minimal decor but a great view of the huge industrial baking oven through a glass window where you can watch the magic happening either before, or after you order. A small staircase leads up to a beautiful open-air loft-style eating area with floor to ceiling windows with a view. Lovely. It was a very charming spot to sit and catch up with my best friend over tea and goodies. They sell loaves and have sandwiches and tons of daily pastry specials as well as very good coffee and hot earl grey tea. I chose a warm tea, a chicken salad baguette, and a coffee flavored treat. All were very good and the ladies brought them upstairs for us when they were ready. I live deep in Virginia Beach so I don't think I'll drive this far always - but if I'm in the area or need to meet my friend for lunch again, I wouldn't hesitate to come back! The hubs and I stopped by to have a little snack, and we ordered: the Pain aux Raisins, a slice of Quiche Lorraine, and an Oranais aux Abricots. The quiche was okay - a little runny and too eggy, but I liked that they had individual tartlet sizes. The pain aux raisins was wonderfully glazed and had a generous amount of raisins - a little tad too sweet, but still tasty! My most favorite was the oranais aux abricots - the apricot on both ends were so fresh and were such a treat to bite into. The pastry was flaky and light. The staff here are friendly and kind, and there are plenty of sweats both on the main floor and upstairs. I'd love to check out their other pastries and their baguette sandwiches the next time. Just WOW and unexpected how awesome this super cute new French bakery in Norfolk would be. Word of mouth has spread rapidly in just six weeks open. The loud hot pink on the exterior seems a perfect fit for the Neon District. The interior is small on the first level with kitchen and cases. A viewing area to watch the goods come out of the oven will be a kid favorite. Upstairs more roomy with tables to enjoy a latte and pastry. My early Sunday morning visit found them brisk with customers. Parking is off street, or in the newer Plot lot across the street. There was minor debris on the walk up to their door. The husband/wife duo that own are French transplants, most recently from Paris. The investment of one of the best commercial ovens speaks volumes to their commitment. The menu on the wall has the basics and other items can be rotated in such as sandwich specials. The prices tilt up, so be prepared to pay more. It it worth it, absolutely! I had the opportunity to try a few things as they were just coming out of the oven. I found the tarts to be the best I've ever had and this comes from a huge tart guy. The buttery croissants are heaven and had a ham & cheese sandwich. Go early for best selection, they sell out. Next visit will include a cup of coffee. Friends have told me the baguettes are a must! Not happy with service-- they were busy and I felt rushed. I chose a chocolate mousse cake--too sweet. They did not have anything that was non sugar. They serve coffee and I ordered a cappuccino they did not offer other cream to add and ONLY had SUGAR to use for the coffee. I asked for an alternative ( sweetener or honey or stevia). Everything is top quality. The baked goods are fresh and delicious. I love the pan au chocolat - it is crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and stuffed with rich chocolate. The baguette sandwiches are also fantastic. Get the salami sandwich - it comes with salami, pepperoni, thinly sliced cured ham, red onion, tomato, and lettuce on fresh baguette. It's seasoned really nicely with dill. You can tell how fresh the baguette by the perfect texture of the bread. The coffee is also very good and goes perfect with any item here.
