I recently visited this cake and pastry shop and was pleasantly surprised. Pretty decent selection. A little something for everyone. There's a decent variety of cakes, pastries, and smaller treats, ranging from classic options to more unique/traditional flavors (I'm assuming filipino). The display cases were well organized with price tags clearly visible and the counters and seating areas were clean and tidy. The presentation of the pastries were also pretty neat and organized. As a matter of fact, the entire time I was eating my meal, my server was going around cleaning up various areas and restocking. I always appreciate a good worker and a clean environment. My server was also very helpful in describing the menu to me, and had greeted me with a smile upon entering. Thanks Kathleen! As for the bathroom, it was alright, but not exceptional. It was functional and had the essentials aka soap and a hand dryer, but it could benefit from some improvements. Urinal was completely out of order and toilet was a bit weak. I suggest implementing a paper towel system instead of the hand dryer. Much more sanitary that way. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by my visit. I left thinking I'd found a great "hole-in-the-wall" bakeshop, only to later find out that it's actually a fairly popular asian bakery chain! Wild. Definitely try it out. read more

The warmer weather today had us craving halo-halo! So, we decided a quick stop into Red Ribbon was what we needed. The Bakeshop is always clean and organized. I was tempted to pick up some packaged bakery treats, but held firm and only ordered the 2 halo-halo's for me and my husband. It wasn't a day to share. Lol. I liked how Red Ribbon had a Fresh Free Sample display for Choco Mousse for you to try! Nice! The cashier was friendly and served me with a smile. The halo- halo was not as sweet as I prefer, but it was still a tasty Filipino treat with the traditional fixings. My husband enjoyed his halo-halo but did mention it could have been creamier. We wandered in with no idea what we were going into... This is a small Filipino bakery with some unique pastries inside I had never heard of and a small menu with other items. They have an entree and cake option you can purchase and a limited menu. It was spotless inside, lots of seating and very clean tables. No one else was inside while we were here for about 5 minutes so it was dead and we just sort-of browsed for a bit. They have some cakes and desserts in a display case and you can order specialty and personalized cakes with pictures on them as well as combos with dinner and cakes. So excited that this location is just off highway 64. This gave us the opportunity to pickup some yummy food on our way home from the beach. I used the preorder feature on their website. I love the customer service of this location. I was running late for my 9am pickup time and Leslie phoned me to tell me my order was ready and empanadas were getting cool. I was so grateful for their call. The location has ample parking. My food was still hot. They had a sample box of fresh and hot empanadas. I enjoyed a sample of the spicy chicken. It was so good that I bought a couple more. The location is spacious and clean. Lots of inventory of sweet and savory ensaymadas, empanadas and sandwiches. The Bake Shop is located at Kemp's River Crossing which is an extensive shopping center occupying the northeast side of the intersection of Kempsville & Indian River Roads. It's easily accessible by both the surface streets & the I-64 Indian River Road exit. The center is modern, well maintained & contains an extensive mix of shops and eateries. The store included more than just its extensive baked goods section. There are prepared meals available including family size meals. Chicken Empanadas are a special deal, buy 6 get one free. It was difficult to decide between the choices available for a new Ube Bakery Good to try. My choice was Ube Mamons, which were also buy 6 & get a Butter Mamon free. They are a light sponge cake style delight that suits my taste buds well. One major temptation was the Ube Overload Cake, which looked absolutely yummy. My favorite go to for cakes. I'm so happy they are doing well and is still here. The place is just enough size but noticeably clean. We came almost close to the end of the day so the offering is meager. But the cashier lady is sweat and patient with me. I have ordered a birthday cake and she did great with the writing. I have been a longtime customer for years now and this is my absolute go to place for when I vacation in VB! Mango Supreme is delicious, but their new Tiramisu is even better! I got to try the new 6-piece chicken ensaimada promo for 19$, which is such a great deal! Normally, they are nearly 30$ a box. My server my past few visits has been Kathleen and she is so kind polite and softspoken which is such a refreshing change from the usual rude or robotic service I often get from teenagers these days.. Bad management and service. Manager can't even decide to replace one of the bread missing from their Christmas gift pack deal going on. All of the breads are available except for one but refused to let us buy it. We even offered to just replace it with a brownie but she said they can't make it. *PLEASE NOTE: This review is strictly for the mamons and the mamons only. My first experience at Red Ribbon Bakeshop (RRB) was when we were stationed in Hawaii. I first got hooked on their mamons at the RRB kiosque located inside the Seafood City Supermarket, a Filipino grocery store in Waipahu. When we moved back here, I was so happy to see that there was a RRB here and I believe it's the only one in the area and the only one in the state. I honestly haven't tried anything else here, but I LOVE their mamons. Mamons are basically sponge cakes, light and fluffy, in the shape of a small tart, individually wrapped. They remind me of the Korean castella sponge cakes. I have tried all of their flavors except for the cheese. My fave is definitely the butter, but mocha is my second fave (very subtle coffee flavor but perfect) and ube comes in third. To be honest, the ube doesn't really taste like ube, but the bright purple color is just fun to eat. Pro tip: buy any six mamons, get one free. Parking - center lot, spaces are tight though. Note: There is a door to enter and a door to exit. Don't try to do the opposite. I guess it's probably more evident when it's busy, but I tried to go out through the entrance and learned the long way. Service has always been courteous. They have other Filipino goods like other breads, empanadas and full sized cakes for special occasions. Again, the ube anything is so intriguing because it's SO purple. I just stick to the mamons because I love them so much. They are the perfect little snack or morning cake with your coffee. There are tables to sit and enjoy your treats there if you'd like! I thought it would just be a small bakery but when I parked, I saw that it looked huge with places to eat inside almost like a McDonald's! The line was long but clearly the staff were working hard, letting us to know to order the empanadas in advance. Perfect treat for a hot summer day. Nice size portions of halo-halo and the flavors just meld together so nicely. They have other snacks and breads and deserts (I'd recommend the mango cake if you're in the mood to splurge a little). The seating was sufficient for a small bakery/restaurant shop. My husband and I were in Virginia Beach for the weekend. I certainly did not know that there was a Res Ribbon Bakeshop in the city-but my friend had commented on Facebook that she and her family make it a point to stop by here to stock up on some delicious Filipino pastries, and encouraged me to visit while I was in the city. They also offer palabok and empanada, as well as halo halo to choose from. Like I said-wish we knew because we would have eaten here instead! As far as baked good go-their selections looked amazing!
