AWESOME place! Best authentic mexican food in town, in my opinion. I've been to El Amigo, El Salto, and some other places but the food at this place blows all the others out of the water. I ordered a a vegetarian plate combo that came with one cheese enchilada, a bean and cheese burrito, and rice/beans. The beans were amazing, and the red sauce atop the enchilada was perfection. Their plate combos range from $8-12 dollars. They bring out chips & salsa which was pretty good. I liked the salsa (and you HAVE to enjoy the salsa or else you shouldn't go back, in my opinion)! Great place. Sat inside, outside. Service as great in both. I only do the taco salad, but it's basically a major amount of good food. My co-workers always want to go there. Yes, we sat on the patio and there were bees...a few ended up in one of our margaritas (we were happy to share, lol), but they had signs warning of the bees and it wasn't a big deal. Great restaurant. We eat there on a regular basis and had our rehearsal dinner there as well; they accommodated 25 people on the back room, no problem. They also brought out all our orders at the same time, and they were all hot! I usually get the shrimp cocktail or the ceviche-both are delicious. My son is a freshman at Valparaiso University. On Family Weekend, we asked where he wanted to eat and he said he had heard good things about La Cabana. We were not disappointed. Everything was great and fresh-tasting. I often complain about the salsa served with the chips tasting like ketchup to me, but not at La Cabana. It was excellent! My husband had a house lime margarita which was great, not watered-down like at most other places. We'll be back! read more

As someone who frequented this dollar store El Salto in the past, I have to say, I must've been out of my absolute noggin to give this god-forsaken place a chance to begin with. Before La cabana, there was Casa Del Mar, another Mexican restaurant that was far superior in every way imaginable. The service was serviceable, the food was edible, and the bathrooms weren't smeared in liquid dookie every 4 seconds. It was a beloved restaurant, indeed, so it only made sense that it went out of business. But fret not, because La Cabana, which just a block ahead of what was Casa Del Mar, still exists. Surely their food doesn't taste like it's been squished between a coal miner's toes for 8 years, right? Right? Oh, my dear friend, that is where you'd be sorely mistaken. Their burritos locos have the taste, smell, and consistency of an enema bag. Their Texas fajitas are so boiling hot they almost gave me a heat stroke just by looking at them. If the beans and rice are fresh, then I'm the prince of Bel Air. The only thing nastier than the food are the attitudes of some of the staff. They didn't get bit by the mean spider, the mean spider got bit by them. I'm not naming any names, but that's only because I never cared to remember them in the first place, so y'all got lucky. La Cabana certainly sets the Latino community back a good 200 years. By the mere virtue of the inability to give zero stars, it gets 1 star from me. Don't spend it all in one place. This place used to be so good. Has gone seriously downhill over the past couple years. It's so disgusting on the inside. Holes in the wall , food stuck in walls and seats , flies and other insects all over , dust etc. I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like .... Hells Kitchen I'm assuming. Have eaten here three times, pretty good mexican food. Beans and rice are authentic, decent sized menu. They are really lacking in customer service though. Some come off rude or curt. Can be waiting sometimes for refills and or check. Not sure if they dont have enough employees working but the wait is less to be desired. Great food but its not going to blow you away. read more

I was disappointed with my first visit this past weekend. My husband and I went for Cinco De Mayo- we knew it was probably going to be busy- which it was.. However, it took over an hour for our two meals to come out! I really think she forgot to put it in, because when we waved our sever down (she hadn't checked on us for at least 30 min) she said "let me go look..." Our food came out less than 10 min later. Service was kinda slow. Took awhile to order and for plates to be removed and get my drinks and refills. Wife said steak tacos were great. I had beef enchiladas and they were great except the sauce could be better. The large queso dip was good size and very tasty. Chips and salsa are above average. Came here with a large group of friends a few weeks ago. We were told we couldn't make a reservation which made it difficult to plan, but it worked out fine and we didn't have to wait too long. Everyone raved about how great the food was but I wasn't impressed. I'm from Southern California so my standards for Mexican food are pretty high. Everyone said this is the best there is in Valpo. To me, everything was mushy and soggy. I got a combination plate with a burrito and enchilada. I couldn't even tell the two apart and they just melted together in a big soggy pile of cheese and beans and soggy tortilla. My daughter got a quesadilla and the cheese was really weird inside. It was very creamy and wet instead of like real melted cheese. I'm not sure if they are using an imitation or processed cheese for the quesadilla, but it was weird. The guacamole and salsa were both pretty good and everyone else enjoyed their meals, but I wouldn't recommend this place if you want flavorful or authentic Mexican food. read more

My wife and I dined in here once before and it was good food and margaritas. Today we had carry out. I ordered the Carne Asada NO ONIONS and guacamole NO ONIONS and guess what was in my food?!?! ONIONS it was as if they gave me extra onions on top my steak smh! The Carne Asada was also bland! No seasoning whatsoever on it and no hot salsa! I chose La Cabana because the parking lot was always full each time I passed. That's usually a good sign... but not this time. The disappointment started with our drink order. I ordered a frozen margarita and a shot of high end anejo tequila for sipping. I received a rocks margarita with my anejo tequila in the margarita. Service after taking our dinner order was nonexistent. I had to ask for hot salsa 3 times, before it came. My one and only water refill came after the 1st request for the check. Then there was the 2nd check request, before we finally got up and asked for it from another staff member. Food was below average IMO. read more

I was on hold 15 minutes previously. My wife is about there to pick up the order I'm about to place!! Put me on hold again. Came back on placed the order, wife was told 30 minute wait time. I'm thinking some call offs? Not sure what's been happening there but have been hearing from more and more that place has been slipping. Maybe opening too many restaurants too quickly. I was definitely disappointed. I have had the nachos there before and they were good, while last night I got just some tacos with a side of rice and beans. The tacos had so much grease the tortilla wouldn't even stay together while the rice and beans were blah with nothing to them. The service was kinda lacking but the prices weren't too bad. My wife and I were eagerly awaiting the grand opening of this place. It looked like they took the time and effort to convert a dismal looking restaurant into an aesthetically pleasing, fun place to go. When the restaurant did open, we were impressed by the crowds; what we thought was a sure signal that this is a good restaurant. Blech. The dining room is lit with fluorescent bulbs, which gives it an awful hospital feel. The floor, tables, and construction make it feel like you are eating in the 1990s. Our waiter was awkward, and confusing. My wife and I had to repeat our orders a couple of times, not because of a language barrier, but because he was unsure of the meals on the menu and what comes with them. Wait time was about what you'd expect for a crowded place at peak dining hours. We munched on the complimentary ships and salsa which, if you've been to any Mexican restaurant, were about what you'd expect. I ordered a 32 oz. Dos Equis at $5.99, which is an incredible deal. My wife ordered a peach margarita, which tasted like the pre-made ones you can buy at Walmart. It cost $7.99. I ordered the Las Carnitas Tacos, which the menu claimed was a house specialty. It came with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. The meat, which was supposed to be Mexican shredded pork, turned out to be giant chunks of unseasoned (literally no seasoning), dry, crock-pot pork roast. Even with the cheese, tomato, and lettuce, this taco had zero flavor. I couldn't even finish. The rice tasted of cinnamon; almost like a dessert rice. The re-fried beans were the consistency of soup. My wife ordered the Double Chimichanga, in the chicken and shredded beef varieties. Chimichangas, in case you're unaware, are basically deep fried burritos. If her chimichanga was deep fried, it wasn't done nearly long enough. They tasted and looked like rolled up tacos. Again, next to no flavor and the meat was dry. My wife also disliked the rice and her re-fried beans had the consistency of water. Each meal is around $10-12. Our bill, including tip, came to $40.00. We left completely disappointed and lamenting the wasted money. I awarded two stars for decent service and very low alcohol prices. Do yourself a favor and head down the street to Margaritas. Better atmosphere and location (in the heart of downtown Valparaiso), considerably better food, and tastier margaritas. read more

This place is ok. I'm writing this review, because I don't appreciate the manager. Abel ( the manager) trying to rip us off. Went with my party of five for some drinks and appetizers. Everything was fine until we receive our bill. It was 25 dollars over then what it was supposed to be. Maybe Abel thought we were drunk and stupid and didn't notice, but we caught it right away. After approaching the manager about the situation he was upset about us questioning the bill. He proceeded to ask us for ID's, although he knew who we were since we were frequent customers. He told us because of "credit card fraud" then he proceeded to question us if "we were ID for our drinks". We told him "that's on you". Then he proceeded to yell at our waitress. Fairly typical "Mexican" food that has little to do with Mexico. I think nearly all of the so-called Mexican restaurants in NW Indiana have the same food service contracts since all of their food taste the same. Fish comes from China and the ingredients are ho-hum with lots of fat and salt. It's as good as any of the others to tank-up your weekly calories so you can waddle out feeling satiated. This location started as a Burger-King many years ago and has had several "Mexican" food forays. To be fair, its food bears as much resemblance to Mexican food as the local "Chinese" food does to real Chinese. The locals expect shovels full of fat, salt, and meat, and that's what they get. They're happy, I am not. Don Quixote is more authentic as Spanish food, except when they are serving meat from old zoo animals. read more
