This place is tiny with only 3 tables to sit, so take out is a good option. We decided to dine in. The waitress came to us immediately and was so friendly! The complimentary chips and salsa were fresh, and the chips were still warm. We ordered Quesatacos, which is basically birria tacos with your choice of meat; we chose steak. The meat was so well seasoned and had the perfect char. The consomme was equally flavorful and more rich than I've experienced in other places. Someone came in and ordered Mexican chocolate milk. It was served in a bag and I was curious about it, so our waitress let us try it for free. It was really good even though I'm not a milk drinker. I'm so glad that this place is close to home because I will definitely be back!

The food was amazing ordered to go great portion size loved that it was made with shredded beef instead of goat. The person taking order was really nice and they were pretty quick.

I guess when you come from the city (South side) you're used to good tasting food. It's when you move out that you realize it's not just good tasting, it's the best authentic Mexican food out there. Living here for over 5 years we're still in the search for a good tasting Mexican local restaurant... I had hopes for this restaurant, crushed when aside from the total being a little over $40 the rice was by far the worse tasting rice didn't bother trying the beans. The enchiladas were so thin & hard it almost felt like it was just a folded tortilla with sauce. Tacos de asada had no flavor. And tortas well pretty much flat.

In town to catch a few ball games. Decided to look for some Mexican food and they popped up on google. Definitely worth the drive out of our way. The food is great, the staff very nice, and the place is extremely clean. Would recommend to people in the area or passing through.

There's no way the portion sizes are this small for a $20 plate. Usually Mexican restaurant are really good with the portions, but this is not it at all. Small piece of meat, 3 tortillas, refried beans from a can and not homemade. What else is there to this spot? Never ordering here again. To top all off, they gave me some old potato wedges that I've never seen in a carne asada dish. I won't be coming back ..!

Authentic and Delicious!…read more I was in the area with my family, and we decided to stop in for a bite. We walked in late one Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. Our waiter was a polite gentleman who was pleasant and affable. I ordered a mango margarita and my sister had a Paloma. The margarita appeared to have been dispensed from a pre-made container. It wasn't something that was freshly blended. It was decent but a little too sweet. I didn't finish it and ended up ordering a Coke later. My sister enjoyed her Paloma though. My mom had a ground beef taco and a chicken tinga taco. She didn't like the chicken but enjoyed the beef. My sister and I both had the rice and beans. For tacos, we ordered chicken tinga, Carne asada, and al pastor. The tacos were phenomenal. They were flavorful, tender, and authentic. The tacos are small, like street tacos, but it was more than enough. The rice and beans were also tasty. My sister didn't care for the rice, but I enjoyed it. We all agreed that we'd visit Maiz & Barrio again. The restaurant vibe was lively and comfortable. The restaurant decor is tasteful with vibrant colors and beautiful wall art. The restaurant is a decent size, so the tables aren't too close together. The bill was $116 for the three of us, which included a 22% tip.

None of the previous businesses were able to hit the mark, or last for any significant amount of time. Maiz & Barro have seemingly figured it out. There are so many Mexican restaurants in the south side ... both of the fast food variety and also the ones offering full service. However, most of the ones actually in Oak Forest don't offer table service, so it's nice to have this spot in the neighborhood. The food is a bit pricey, but the atmosphere is lively, and the service was great. We've been here a few times in the past and the food has always been good. We stopped in for lunch during this visit and we did not leave disappointed. The tacos are very good and the complementary salsa they serve is delicious. Not my favorite Mexican food in the area, but definitely good enough to warrant repeated visits.

It has a pretty simple menu of a few items or so. At least it makes it easier to choose anything. The prices are okay and the food is better than it looks. Bad thing is there's no alcohol. It's not a place for margaritas, but rather Jarritos. That's why they have to make good on the food, so you can at least get something. For meat eaters the menu is mostly for them with things like beef and chicken. There's also crazier things like tongue. It's about $8 for guacamole. Pretty much the only vegetarian thing on the menu it seems. Had a chunkiness with a light spiciness to it. The tortilla chips were crispy and simple without being burnt like at many places. For sure it's one of the many places to get Mexican food. It's located on Cicero Avenue at 137th Street. They're open until late at night so you can go when getting the munchies or something.

Fresh made chips and salsa choices were brought to the table with napkins and utensils. Rhodes chips were just right. They were made from good tortillas, crisp fried in clean oil. I could have just had that for breakfast. I needed proteins, so I chose the Chilaquiles con Huevo in green salsa. I was told the red was not spicy but can be adjusted to my liking. My eggs (2) were over easy (well executed), served over cheesy corn fried tortilla strips with sour cream, tomatoes, refried beans, rice and guacamole. I make it through half the dish. The rest was taken home and eaten the next day. Just as tasty. I have more s dishes to try and a Summer month to do it.
