I'm so happy that I found this place! I love Melys down the street for pupusas but we wanted to try something new out. I loved this place just the same! Parking: I think they have some spots behind their restaurant but for the two times we've been here, we have parked on the street in front of the restaurant When we first went here, we ordered way too much food for just two people. We got the pupusa sampler thinking that they were tiny pupusas. Not at all. They were regular sized and damn delicious. We tried all the flavors but pepperoni haha. We had to take some home because we were so full. Btw the price is sooo cheap for an entire platter. Well since we thought the pupusas were tiny, we had ordered seafood soup and pollo asado. Those plates were also really big. I thought the seafood soup was alright, I've had better at other places but they did give a bunch of huge pieces of fish. My bf loved the pollo asado. I also got a horchata, and let me make this clear, Salvadoran horchata is definitely different than Mexican. There's a strong sesame flavor and I was not a fan but this is typical of Salvadoran horchata. On this trip, it was very crowded and the staff was pretty slow I must admit. The second time I went, I invited a bigger party to go with me (altogether 6) and we ordered 2 pupusa platters and 2 pastelitos and that was enough for all 6 of us. So affordable! Someone got the pepperoni pupusa and really enjoyed it. I got the ensalada drink this time, which I loved. The service was also much better this time, but it was also not crowded. We stumbled across La Caravana one night on our way to Altadena to visit Christmas Tree Lane. We weren't sure what to expect because the neighborhood was a little ghetto. To our surprise the inside was decorated so nicely for Christmas! You could really tell that the owner took great care in decorating. We decided on this please because the reviews were great for their pupusas! Our party of three was adventurous enough to try the pupusa platter, which consisted of 10 mini pupusas, one of each from the menu. They weren't full size, but they weren't exactly mini ones either! We also tried the enchilada plate, which the El Salvadorian is more like a sope (shell with beans, cabbage/lettuce, and choice of meat topping). Their recommended chef entrées included a fried fish, which was kind of plain. The rice wasn't bad though! The tamarindo is my go to drink and it didn't disappoint here either. I used to come here all the time and get large portions of meat. Now the asada chunks are 1/3 of what they used to be. I understand that the minimum wage increase and other business operational costs are higher, but the menu prices for the food are higher too. So why are the meat portion sizes smaller? I've only had pupusas two other times before, and I found these to be less dry and tastier. We came in kinda late, but they were nice enough to wait for our friend to come later. I ordered the platter that had 1 pupusa, fried banana, fried yucca and casamiento. I dislike elote, so I got extra yucca. Everything was freshly made and tasty, especially the queso sauce and the slice of queso fresco. CONS: 1) DON'T get the aguacate -- it's small, hard, and cut into slices, when we were expecting it mashed up. 3.5 stars Mini Pupusa Sampler ($12.95): I was thoroughly surprised the mini wasn't so mini! The pupusas were accompanied with cup of red salsa and mild cabbage - both great accompaniments. We ordered one of each pupusa and split it among the three of us so we could all try the various ones. After about the third one, we couldn't figure out which was which! The zucchini was definitely one of my favorites. Otherwise, they were filled with too much cheese and not much of anything else. Steak Plate ($11.95): Steak, grilled onions & bell peppers, salvadorian rice, beans. The only thing i really enjoyed on the plate was sadly the grilled veggies. The rice was too salty, beans were bland and the steak was OVER cooked and chewy. Overall, I would only come for the pupusas (and do want to try the plantains) but not any of the other entrees. I have been wanting to try this place, because I heard the food is really good. The place is self seating which I don't mind. However, we waited for our food for 45 minutes. We tried grabbing their attention to ask how much longer, and they avoided making eye contact. Not one waitress came up to us to make sure we're ok or to apologize for the delay in our order. No chips and salsa while waiting. We had to go up to the register to let them know we we're leaving. We asked how much we owed for the coffee and soft drink. Service was awful my pupusa was undercooked the dough was so raw that it was literally getting stuck to the roof of my mouth and i could feel the grainy stuff from the dough when i brought it to the server's attention she took my plate .... They put my pupusa and put it back on the grill then brought it back to me thats so nasty and unsanitary how are u gonna heat up food thats been bitten and put it on the grill where your preparing other peoples food! Best breakfast ever! Seriously, everything is so fresh, it takes a while to prepare. There's a little bit of parking in the back, and some street parking is available too (1hour) This cozy little spot is nice, clean, and friendly. I'm sure everything tastes good but the "Desayuno de la casa" is my all time favorite. I can only come once, maaaayybe 2x a month because it's pretty high in calories. The plate comes with pupusa with a filling of your choice, fried cassava (yuca), plantains, mixed rice and beans, corn tamale, cheese and sour cream. This place has some good authentic food, food does take time if you are ordering pick up/carry out so don't order in a rush...plus you can't rush quality! Their prices are decent and I don't know of any other local spots with the same great taste and pricing. Customer service is so so nothing special at all and some of the staff are just not amused if you don't speak Spanish, but I don't care I just go for food. Went here on Sunday 1/8/2023 with my daughter. We ordered a bunch of pupusas to take home: cheese & jalapeno cheese and loroco spinach and cheese shrimp and cheese & chorizo and cheese chicharron and I forgot which others. Most were $3.50 and the shrimp was $3.95. I would recommend going here, the pupusas were pretty good size for the price and with all that we bought we had 3 meals out of them. I personally did not care for the chicarron but my daughter liked just not for me. Everything else was really good. I would definitely go back. You order the pupusas at the back of the restaurant just an fyi. Our order took 35 minutes so we left and did a quick errand and came back. We live in the IE and they traveled well.
