It was my first time having food here. I ordered for pick up and when I arrived parking was a hassle. There is parking in the back but it was very packed so I can't fully blame this spot since it's shared parking, but it was still wasting my time going around in circles, made me feel some kind of way. I ordered pork and chicken tamales. The man on the front seemed unpleasant and didn't bother greeting me, just gave me a blank stare and waited for me to talk. I picked up my order and when I got to my destination I opened my order and there were no utensils no napkins and no salsa. Me hungry and annoyed I looked past that to finally have what I've been craving for. I unwrapped my tamale to find a sad little masa with little bits of stuffing. Now I'm hangry. Nope not going back. Hands down the best pupusas in LA. I've been coming here for years and I love it, especially for breakfast. I'll still eat here. However, today I have to say... do NOT order the tamales. They used to be great but "shrinkflation" really got to it. These tamales were so small, I didn't even see the chicken in one of them. I get ingredients are expensive right now. So this place is right in the middle of Atwater on the main drag on the corner and I basically went in there cuz I wanted to know if they had a restroom and they were very kind and accommodating and then as it turns out my wife was leaving the business we were frequenting. She was at the bookstore across the street and I was thrifting at the out of the closet. We both wanted to get some Mexican. So we went into El Buen gusto and everything was pleasant, the ambience was I don't know kind of old world Mexican charm. The staff was very courteous and accommodating. The food came and everything was really good that's really just the best way to describe it the food was really good was kind of Mexican food without being overly spicy which is big for me because I just don't like spicy food. And these days that's kind of hard to find sometimes I mean go to Chipotle... everything on their menu to put into their burritos or their bowls, almost all of it is spicy. Yuck. LOL. El Buen gusto gave us options and I had the yuca and the pork Colorado I don't remember what my wife had but both of us really liked our dishes. The cabbage salad was fresh and it was a nice surprise. Did I mention how reasonable the prices were? Well I am now ! I remember paying $10 for my pork dish and then because it was so reasonable I decided I wanted a tamale too because anybody who knows salvadoreño food knows that Salvadorean tamales are something you want to sleep with... lol... the masa so soft and moist and filled with goodness like a particular meat maybe some green olives maybe some potato bits maybe some Garbanzo beans just good stuff. Unfortunately, our overall experience here was not pleasant. The issues ranged from the quality of the food to the service, which was especially disappointing. We tried to be patient, but there were too many mistakes and no effort made to improve our experience. From the moment we arrived, no one attended our table for at least 30 minutes--not even to offer water. When someone finally came to take our order, we were ready right away to avoid further delays. During that entire wait, no one checked in on us, asked if we needed anything, or apologized for the slow service. Our food took another 35-45 minutes to arrive. During that time, I had to get up and request my 4-year-old's food because he was tired and hungry. The sopa de pata had a strong curry flavor rather than the traditional Salvadoran taste my wife and I are used to, so after a few sips we stopped eating it . When the waiter asked what was wrong, my wife explained it wasn't to her liking because of the seasoning, and he simply took it back without further comment. They also got one of my son's pupusas wrong, but at that point we just let it go. I wasn't informed they were out of horchata until everyone else was already halfway through their drinks, and I had been waiting for mine. Throughout the meal, we never felt checked in on or genuinely attended to. When I asked about the delays, the woman who appeared to be the owner had a very dismissive, almost pompous attitude. We always try to support small businesses but this experience was extremely disappointing. I rarely write negative reviews, but the service, quality, and overall ambiance were far below what my family and I expect. To add to everything, the restaurant briefly lost power for about five minutes, and no one made any announcements or checked on guests. We had just arrived, so we waited it out, but the lack of communication was surprising. The fastest service they had was bringing the check. Overall, I would not return. They need more staff and significantly better service. The food's flavor may come down to personal preference, but the service alone was enough to make this a one-time visit for us. read more

I stopped by for a takeout order today and while the food was good, my experience with the cashier (an older lady) was disappointing. When I chose not to leave a tip for a simple pickup order, the cashier's attitude noticeably changed and came across as rude and unprofessional. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened and after being treated this way multiple times I will no longer be supporting this small business. Tipping is optional, not mandatory, and no customer should be guilt-tripped or disrespected for it. If the staff can't handle basic professionalism, maybe they're in the wrong job. I hope the staff receives training on customer service and professionalism. read more

We are deeply disappointed with the service and food. We been coming here for years and not regularly but were a customer since years ago. I'm saddened of how much the food has downgraded and the portions. We waited an hour for our food at the table. When the plates were received the portions were basically "kid" size plates. We received a tamale that was the tiniest tamale ever! My apologies to the owner but what you guys had before don't eliminate it. The horchata, pupusas, everything tastes so different and not in a good way. I did note to him the "sales tax" shouldn't be 10.75% but 9.75% their location is Atwater Village LA County not Glendale. What a delightful and delicious little El Salvadoran restaurant! We met up with some old jr. high/high school friends (John Marshall High 82') for lunch. They were able to accommodate us and the waiter was as sweet as he could be. The food was so good!! They have parking in the back but good luck with that! This restaurant is terrible! It has gone done downhill on food quality and service. The servers are kind but the cashier lady who happens to be the owners' daughter was extremely rude. My family and I ordered Carne guisada, pupusas, tamale, yucca con chicharron and for dessert Nuegados y platano con miel. The only good thing was the pupusas. The rest was mediocre quality. the worst was the nuegados y platano con miel. The sliced platanos looked and tasted old and the nuegados were soggy. We brought it up to the server and to the owner's daughter ( the cashier) and she said you touched it I'm not taking it off the bill in a very rude and disrespectful way!!!
