The amatriciana was also good. The fried tripe was pretty good and not super chewy. The fried Jewish artichoke was also very good and fried well with salt and garlic. The place was very easy to walk in and get seats and the staff was very attentive and nice. Kel and I woke up and decided to walk over and check it out. We showed up 10 minutes before it actually opened, so we got a table. Early bird gets the worm. We got lucky because the place packed up quickly. Reservation is recommended. They served us homemade bread, it was heavy and dense but light at the same time. I know it doesn't make sense so if you ever get a change to bite into a piece you'll understand the words coming out of my mouth. Lol. Of course we ordered the buffalo mozzarella salad with tomatoes. I think for the price (our meal cost $105) and the large sterile restaurant feel, there are many other places I would go first. Great local pasta and drinks! I would highly recommend planning in advance if you want to visit. Make a reservation, because the restaurant is small and fills up fast, and check the menu in advance because some items are only available on certain days or during certain seasons. We walked by and decided to stop in for dinner. We waited about 30 mins for a table and hung out at the bar. The bartender was phenomenal and made us the best whiskey sours we've ever had! While in Rome we asked our driver to bring us to a place locals would frequent. He quickly recommended La Carbonara. The place apparently is a favorite of the local police. This was one of our favorite eateries that we went to on our entire European vacation. Service was friendly and efficient. Our table of six noticed that our server took orders from another table of four then took our orders all without writing anything down. We said a prayer and hoped for the best. Astonishingly everything came out almost perfect. The "almost" part comes from my order of steak with rosemary and thyme. The flavor was good but a little salt was needed and when I asked for a medium when I got towards the center it was medium rare. One highlight was the burrata appetizer. My kids who apparently have mice genes love cheese but had never had burrata. They are now upset at me for being a bad parent and "holding out" on them. What...doesn't the 50 count cheese sticks from Costco count? Anyways they went through that like a chainsaw through paper. My daughter absolutely loved her pasta carbonara. Not too creamy. The red wine the waiter suggested was excellent. The restaurant itself has a family feel to it. Old lady behind the cash register. Maybe the daughter tending the bar. The taste of the artichoke is almost like a soft pork fat. It is fried and then tossed with a little salt for taste. Nothing out of this world but a cultural experience. We ordered our own pasta dishes. My fiance ordered the carbonara, her favorite dish on the planet. She was so excited and loved the dish so much. Salty crispy panchetta crumbled over the top and al dente pasta. Hard to beat a really good carbonara. I ordered the pistachio spaghetti which was creamy and light. The pistachio flavor gives the dish a nice earthy taste. We shared the steak with rosemary and thyme. We ordered it medium and that's exactly how it came out. Meh. Eh. This is how I would describe my experience -- meh. We were walking around looking for a place for dinner. We looked on tripadvisor, google, yelp and came across several places. We walked to each place and looked at the menu. The thing that stood out for this place is the long wait. It opens at 7pm for dinner and there was already a wait outside the door around 06:30PM. However, the wait looked like people from a tour group. There was a bunch of asian people waiting outside, so it wasn't locals. As time went on, I noticed bunch of different groups standing around/waiting in line for this place before it opens. It opens at 7pm but they weren't ready to open the door at 7pm. Once the door opened, they took reservations first and handful of people did make reservations then the people without reservations were offered an opportunity to come in. The hostess said he can sit us and we have 1.5 hour to eat (weird, they gave us a time limit but probably due to the reservations and how busy it got). We ordered the carbonara, spaghetti ajo e ojo and another dish (bucatini with bacon or something?). Honestly, the food wasn't that great. I wasn't impressed. I just thought it was over hyped. I didn't really care for my experience, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone else. In the decor of the restaurant, it seemed pretty popular - lots of photos and there's drawings/signatures everywhere on the wall. It may be popular but it's not really good. We were recommended this spot by many people all throughout Rome and just had to see what the hype was all about. So we decided to get to this spot around 630 pm and there was already a bit of a line outside the restaurant (we didn't have reservations). So a lot of locals did recommend this spot but did also say it's became a huge tourist trap which became apparent because around 7, the line tripled in size, we were lucky to get right in. We had a great waiter (forgot his name but originally from the Philippines) who gave us a bit of a history behind the restaurant before we went right into ordering. We started with burrata as an appetizer which was super super fresh. We then got rigatoni carbonara which was amazing and some American pasta that the server recommended which was also delicious. We also wanted to try their steak with rosemary which we said screw it let's order it and pig out and boy were we glad we did. It was cooked perfectly and extremely juicy. Overall an amazing spot. The reason it's 4 stars is because you have a time limit on how long you can be seated and they only give 1 person a WiFi code per table for only 20 minutes. Location: Monti, a totally groovin' neighborhood. So don't regret picking this hood as my home away from home. The place: Teeny tiny! As in, they have exactly nine tables (I think one was doubled up so make it ten). They also have a few spots at the bar. Reservations are necessary. Like most places I've been to, this place had an old-school decor with wood accents. But the best part? Most walls are covered with love notes to the chef, from the restaurant's patrons. It's very cozy but if you dislike practically sitting at the same table as your neighbors, this may not be place for you. Service: Great. I stopped by the night before to book a table for the next day. My waiter was super friendly and happily recommended a great Sicilian wine and one of the house specialties - lasagna blanca. This was layered with Gorgonzola, radicchio and (I think) mushrooms. When my waiter saw that the lasagna was served without Bechamel sauce he confiscated my plate and returned it with sauce. Personally. I'm not a big fan of white sauce but this worked well with these ingredients. The lasagna was quite good and surprisingly, the Gorgonzola didn't overpower the dish at all. I would have liked a bit more flavor but at the end if the end of the day, this was solid. Came here for my last meal of Rome. The first thing I would recommend is having a reservation before hand because we had to wait an hour before we got seated (we did sit in the bar area and wait and they did give a bowl of pork belly bites to eat while we wait along with a few Italian beers). I needed more cheese? The wife had fettuccine with a tomato sauce. I had a bite and it was better than mine. It was actually really reasonably priced despite it being so packed. It is not the typical restaurant ready for the tourists, in fact the menú is in italian so we didn't understood few words on it. I can't remember the name of the pasta we chose, but it was delicius and different From the typical types of pasta you find in the restaurants for tourists. Being first time visitors to Rome, we've been relying on Yelp to find the best places to dine and this is definitely a winner. We walked in and had a seat at the bar, the owner happened to be there and started talking to us. He was super friendly and hospitable. We ordered a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and it was great. Having mostly stuck to California wines, we told the sommelier what we liked and this one of the 5 options he presented us. After being seated, we ordered dinner with a very friendly and helpful waiter. He recommended the mozzarella and prosciutto appetizer which we ordered. I found the prosciutto to be a bit salty and fatty for my taste, but my husband enjoyed it a lot. Pros: The steak was literally the best steal I've had and I've eaten a lot of steak. It was the perfect cut and quality of meat. My wife had the cheese and pepper pasta. It may sound boring but the savory sauce and fresh pasta was totally the opposite. It tasted as if they had just hand rolled the pasta right before they served it. Cons: Most places in Rome ( like many parts of Europe) close between around 3:00-7:00 pm. We rolled around in 7:30 pm and were told they were fully booked. We reserved a time for 9:30, their first availability of dinner reservation. Keep in mind this is not the best for kids or large parties. My wife and I went here from a recommendation from our private guide. The food was good, but no better then most restaurants in Italy. BUT, the service was the WORST that we have ever had. The waiter was too busty with everyone else and totally ignored us. We were seated at our outside table (there were only nine tables) after a brief 15 minute wait inside, then waited close to 45 minutes before the waiter bothered to even acknowledge that we were there. We discussed some options and he made some recommendations that we agreed to. Then another 45 minute wait for our appetizer. Then, he dropped off some bread and we asked for olive oil. It took 15 minutes for him to bring us olive oil after going past us multiple times and totally ignoring us. When they finally brought our main course, they brought out 2 correct dishes, one incorrect dis and totally forgot our other two dishes. When he finally circled back 15 minutes later, he said he thought we only ordered two dishes and did not remember the other 2 dishes that we ordered, even though HE recommended them. To top it all off, when we were finished, we waited 20+ minutes for the check and ended up going inside to pay, because the waiter continued to ignore us. My wife paid the bill and when I looked at it, I saw that they charged us for one of the items we did not receive. I went back in to point it out to the owner and she did not believe me and asked the worthless waiter if he served it to us. She reluctantly refunded us the money for that one dish. Not once did anyone apologize or offer anything. On my way out, the waiter confronted me and told me that I was the problem. The restaurant itself is a complete TOURIST TRAP. We asked our waitress for a wine recommendation, but instead she pushed a crappy cheap wine on us which isn't what we wanted. She also recommended the fettuccine with porcini mushrooms and the lamb, both of which we ordered. The pasta we got was NOT fettuccine (it was spaghetti) and looking around at other tables, we realized most of the pastas were being passed off with spaghetti or penne as opposed to what was advertised on the menu. The porcinis in the pasta were OK at best, and the sauce was literally just olive oil (you've probably made better pasta at home, even if you're not a cook). La Carbonara serves the freshest and best pasta I've ever had. Period. Again, we went twice to this awesome eatery, which was a lot considering it wasn't exactly close to where we were staying. On our first visit, I got the Fettuccini casareccie alla zi tere (Pomodoro ciliegino, peperoncino, aglio, parmigiano e basilico. What this means is that I got fresh, handmade fettucini noodles with a sauce of cherry tomatoes, peppers, oil, parmesan cheese and basil. The portion was significant, and the flavours were delicious. Sauce is nice, slightly spicy, cherry tomatoes are halved and perfectly cooked. The star is the pasta noodles. Hand cut so it's not perfect, a little dense, but in such an amazing dreamy way. Chris ordered the Strozzapreti (small tubular pasta) cacio e pepe. Talk about creamy, cheesy, peppery deliciousness. We traded a bit of each, and though my dish was amazing, his was exquisite. We thought about the cacio e pepe until we were able to get back and have more. On our second visit, we ordered a local specialty, Carciofi alla Giudia. This is a whole artichoke fried in olive oil. It was hard to know whether to eat whole top, but we decided to and they were so nice like artichoke chips, seasoned to perfection. We both loved it. At €4, it was a bargain. We both had the Strozzapreti Cacio e Pepe, and were thrilled we did. They do drop off bread on the table and charge €2 for it, but that's not bad in my opinion.
