This is a very sad review to write. I drove from Tamarac to Miami to meet up with a friend for dinner, and since it was Miami, I wanted to have Cuban food. Lord knows Miami is the right place for it. Well, Havana would be better, but I don't swim very well. Any way, we talked about the different choices and settled on La Carreta. What a mistake. First, they don't have papa rellenos. How can you be a Cuban restaurant and not have papa rellenos? That's the best Cuban food there is, and they don't have it. That's just not acceptable. I ordered the camarones enchiladas, which was not terrible, except that the shrimp (that's what camarones means) were over-cooked. I don't find that to be the worst thing because I always over-cook my shrimp. Not because I like it that way, just because I screw up shrimp every time I cook it. But back to the restaurant where they should know better. They over-cooked the shrimp. The sauce was good. My sides were a) fried plantains, and b) a side salad. The salad was just a plate of shredded lettuce with some shredded carrots on top, then two slices of tomato, two slices of cucumber and five onion rings. The dressing was oil and vinegar. No other choice. The salad was pretty lousy. The plantains were good. My friend ordered the vaca fritz de pollo and he was appalled. It's a chicken dish but he had me try it and it appeared to be yesterday's chicken cooked up again. I gave him the sauce from my over-cooked camarones and that at least put some moisture back into the chicken. He got a side of vegetables and they were the sorriest looking things I've ever seen. The broccoli wasn't even the color of broccoli. It was green, but more of an olive green. I don't even know how you can accomplish that. I'm going to try it the next time I cook broccoli. We also split the tostones rellenos, which were these little pastry cups with shrimp and pineapple. They were okay. Nothing to write home about, so I didn't. I way over tipped, because the waitress was nice and the food isn't her fault. She also told us, (well, told my friend. They were speaking in Spanish and all I can do at that point is sit there and look pretty.) that she doesn't eat there because she doesn't like the food. Found this place while researching places to eat while visiting Miami area. I've done research before coming here so I kind of knew what to get, but reviewed the menu just to confirm. We got the following: - calamari - the Cuban sampler - Grilled Palomilla Steak - Our Famous Cuban sandwich The food came out in about 5 minutes after we placed the order. The feeling we got was that it was more of quick service, then your typical restaurant. Now, we would have expected the calamari to come out first, since that was the appetizer, but our main courses came out first. Then five minutes later, the waiter came with the calamari and started to take it back, but I told him that we wanted it. Then as we were finishing up our food, I had asked about the cuban sandwich. Instead of walking to the kitchen, the server went to the other dining room area and brought it, this lead me to believe that it was sent to the wrong table. The Sampler was decent, the pulled pork was bit tough to eat, others were good. The steak was bit bland, but cooked to what we ordered. The Cuban sandwich was just ok, not something that we would order again. Looks like a lot of locals come here. My wonderful wife confirmed that, instead of a 5am to Miami and then a mid-day to St. Kitts, for a long tired day, we could spend a 1/4 (25%) of the airline points, BOOKING as soon as flights were available, take a mid-day flight, sightsee in Miami, then get to St. Kitts the next day... great idea! We found another establishment, which looks to be good, but which had a wait for a table, so we decided to walk around a bit. We quickly found La Carreta and went in. We were waited on by the gracious and helpful Maidelys. My wife and I travelled to Miami from the Daytona to attend an interview at the Miami Airport. Since we had a few hours to burn prior to our 3:00 pm interview we decided to go to Little Havana, (Calle Ocho) for lunch. We went to the popular La Carreta Restaurant and glad we did. First the service was excellent. My wife ordered the Roasted Pork with rice and plantains and I had the Churrasco with white rice and black beans. Both plates were great. For dessert we had Cafe con Leche and Philly Cheese pastries. Prices for everything including tip was under $50.00, which was a little high due to the cost of the Churrasco. On our final day in Miami before our seven day cruise, we decided to get some more Cuban food by having breakfast at La Carreta. My family is originally from Miami and we would eat often in La Carreta prior to moving, although we frequented the one in Hialeah. The service was excellent. We were seated in a few minutes and our waiter was quick to take our order and bring us our food. One thing I love about La Carreta is that you can have your Cafe con Leche (Cuban Coffee with Milk) either made with regular milk or evaporated milk. The taste is very different, and I love the evaporated milk version. My family ordered that version with our meals. We all had eggs, grits and cuban toast, though we all had our own spin on the type of eggs we ordered. Food was absolutely delicious! We finished our meal with some Cuban coffee, because thats the proper way to finish a meal of Cuban food. I would also say we loved the giant rooster decoration they had outside lol. I had a very unpleasant experience with an employee named Haydee. Her attitude was extremely rude, she had a sour expression the entire time, and instead of handing my change politely, she slammed the money onto the counter. There was no courtesy, no "thank you," and no wish for a nice day. Customer service matters, and interactions like this are exactly how you lose a loyal customer. It was only right I order "The Cuban" sandwich and pair it with fries. Their prices are reasonable considering you are in Miami, FL. My sandwich was $10 without a side or drink. OK, I love Cuban food. I eat it every chance I get in my hometown of Austin TX. And, here I was - finally in Little Havana in Miami - at the Valhalla of Cuban food. I was expecting it to be amazing. The vaca frita was dried out. The congris was somehow tasteless. The camarones al ajillo had some gloppy sauce, and even the Cuban sandwich was boring / sub-par to one I'd gotten in the Austin *airport.*. What the actual heck?? The only standouts in the entire meal were the maduros and the meat-filled croquetas appetizers. Also, they had some nice cocktails, including a particularly good spicy margarita and guava mojito. Had a great experience here on a Saturday afternoon. It's huge so we were able to be sat right away. The Special Cuban sandwich is gigantic! I got the Carreta Sandwich which is a Cuban with chorizo. 2.5 stars because of the horrible bathrooms, but since yelp doesn't let us give half stars for reviews, I'm rounding up for the food & service. My visit to La Carreta on Calle Ocho was an experience of all sorts, to say the least. I was likely drawn by the big restaurant sign, advertising "CUBAN CUISINE" and the colorful rooster statue at the foot of the stairs to the entrance. The venue, itself, is a good size, giving the impression that it welcomes plenty of patrons at a time. With its wood fixtures and clay-like roofing, guests are immersed in a diner with a hacienda-style setting. The eatery can house many with its plenty tables, booths, and bar seating, each set with paper placemats. Think Denny's in Havana. To add to the setting, the warm and friendly staff is mostly Spanish-speaking and their menus are also fully written in Spanish. No worries, though - gringos can request for an English version. The extensive menu offers classic Cuban fare at bargain prices. Expect large portions on the plates. For a fast, inexpensive dinner or lunch, it's pretty decent [diner] food and your tummy will agree...as long as you avoid the restroom. So yeah, the food and service are good, but the bathrooms are FILTHY & DISGUSTING. Who wants to see unflushed toilets of dung in bathrooms of eateries?! I nearly vomited the lunch I had just eaten...and I'm getting nauseous now from writing about this memory, GROSS! Seriously, I left the restaurant traumatized and with a queasy stomach. One thing I will never get tired of eating is Cuban food. Being in Miami, it's the perfect city to get authentic cuben food, and La carreta is just that. I was pretty surprised at just how big the restaurant was when I went inside. It's huge! As for the food, wow the food was really good I really enjoyed my meal. The chicken was really juicy and the beans were really good as well. My girlfriend ordered the carne asada and she thought it was good but had definitely had better. She did however, think the croquetas were amazing.
