I visited Havana about 20 years ago. I loved the beans and rice. So, we had to try an authentic Cuban meal. I had their famous chicken, which is roasted in a special gravy sauce. My first time in Miami, kicking off a birthday week, and the first place we landed after a quick and predictably rough Spirit Airlines flight from NYC, RIP to whatever dignity that airline has left. Wanted a Cubano sandwich immediately upon arrival, so we came straight to Havana 1957. This spot has been recreating 1950s Havana since 2010, right down to the vintage memorabilia and the whole "Un Dia En La Habana" concept, and it's since grown into a small chain across Miami and even Vegas. The Ocean Drive location does it right: great service, very friendly and fast, food that was amazing across the board. Loved my first taste of a traditional, genuine Cuban sandwich, ham, roast pork, Swiss, pickles, mustard, all pressed together and served with a mountain of shoestring fries, as close to the source as I could ask for stateside. Ordered a rum and coke and they hand it to you in a genuinely giant glass, perfect for getting the party started, even though it was a random Monday afternoon. It was before 7 so we were able to enjoy drinks and apps off of the happy hour menu. Mojitos w were so good, I had a guava and coconut one and both were delicious. As others have stated, Havana 1957 is a small chain of Cuban eateries located throughout Miami, with I think 3 restaurants on Miami Beach alone. We stopped here at this one on Espanola Way for dinner on a Sunday, primarily because we had somewhere else in this area to be afterward, and while most every place on this touristy street was packed with a wait list, this restaurant could seat us right away. Service was good all evening from an outgoing waiter, this place was great for people watching (we were seated at a high top on the sidewalk in front), the food was good and the prices were reasonable, especially considering that Espanola Way is one of the most touristy areas on already touristy Miami Beach. I had the signature roasted chicken ($28) and my husband the Cuban churrasco steak ($42) and both included sides. We also had a glass of wine each and again, wine prices were reasonable. While we don't tend to eat in this general area often as it is so touristy which usually equals lackluster food and service at high prices, Havana 1957 was just fine. We LOVE Havana 1957! Hands down one of my favorite restaurants. With several locations across South Florida, it makes it easy and convenient to enjoy whenever the craving hits. Whenever we're in South Beach, it's always on our must-visit list! This was our first time at the Española Way location, and it's definitely the smallest of them all. That said, we still had a great experience. We only ordered drinks and appetizers, and the table space worked fine for that. However, if everyone at the table had ordered full plated meals, it would have felt pretty tight. The service was friendly, the vibes were perfect, and as always, the food and drinks were a solid 10/10. There are restrooms inside along with a small bar area, which is a nice touch. If you're debating whether to eat at Havana 1957, let me save you some time: go hungry and wear stretchy pants. We ordered the Cuban sandwich and the Cuban burger, and honestly both were dangerously good. The Cuban sandwich was exactly what you hope for -- crispy bread, perfectly pressed, packed with flavor, and the kind of sandwich that makes you pause mid-bite and just nod at the person across from you like "yep... this was the right decision." The Cuban burger was also fantastic -- juicy, flavorful, and big enough that you start questioning whether you should have skipped breakfast. The area around the restaurant was great too. Nice vibe, good energy, and perfect for walking around before or after eating... which you will probably need to do after finishing that burger. The servers were good -- friendly, attentive, and thankfully didn't judge us for attacking the food like we hadn't eaten in three business days. Overall the place has a fun atmosphere, great Cuban comfort food, and the kind of menu that makes you want to come back just to try the things you didn't order the first time. When in Miami you gotta try Cuban. Was in South Beach area with co-workers in from Europe so hit the Espanola Way & Ocean Dr. We sat outside to people watch at the Espanola location. We started with the steak empanadas and pork bites for appetizers. The sauce that came with the pork was awesome but was a little let down with the amount of meat in the empanada - they tasted fantastic so don't pass on these. I had their traditional roasted chicken dish - that sauce was the star! Of course the rice and beans were good too. If you like beer, get the Hatuey - nice balance and an easy drink. We asked for sparkling water but it wasn't kept chilled after opening the bottle so hence it got hot. The chicken fajitas didn't have flavor. I had carnitas tacos and the pork was dry. Our waiter took a long time to come by. When we were served our food, the waiter dropped a glass off the platter that broke by my feet and he did make an effort to call for clean up - no one came. Another customer told me to be careful because there was broken glass by my foot. My husband and I came to celebrate our pre-anniversary and everything was an experience. Our server had great recommendations for drinks and food but we only decided with the Cuban appetizer combo and a few drinks. Due to the humidity we weren't very hungry but getting the combo was able to introduce us to more Cuban food and it didn't disappoint. The mojitos were a highlight especially with the sugar cane stick. As for the location, it has a high influx of tourists due to it being on española way but there is definitely not a lack of flavor to try and just be another location. As expected he has a thick accent that takes us NY'ers more concentration to understand but he did educate us on the menu and the most popular meals on it. This restaurant was right on the corner of our hotel so my friends & I decided to check it out! The place was completely packed full but we were able to get a table in about 20 min. The appetizers we ordered to share were the flank steak empanadas, tropical ceviche, & fried sweet plantains. The waiter also brought a plate of croquettes (might have been an error?) but we didn't get charged for it so we dug in! My favorite apps were definitely the empanadas & plantains!! Highly recommend! The pineapple sauce that came with the empanadas was delicious!! The croquettes were also really good! It came with an aioli type sauce that really elevated the dish. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the ceviche. It was definitely too "limey" & that overpowered the whole dish. For entree, we ordered ropa viejas (flank steak stew), vaca frita (braised flank steak), camarones al ajillo (garlic shrimp), & masitas del cerdo (cuban fried pork). I personally had the ropa viejas. I did enjoy the overall flavor of the dish but it came out lukewarm, which was disappointing. I did also try the vaca frita. Again, flavor was decent but it was on the dry side & definitely needed a sauce. The garlic shrimp & fried pork were good though! Overall, it's a decent restaurant with some hidden gems. I was minding my business as I was leaving the restaurant after a decent experience, when I looked to my right at one of the tables where this girl was screaming, "Help!" Another win for us with a great restaurant. We started with the appetizer for two. It had so many different things on it. Empanadas, black bean hummus, bacon wrapped shrimp, croquettes, Yuka fries and pork chunks. The dipping sauces were perfect for the appetizer. We then ordered the sampler plate.
