My favorite meal during my time in Miami! My husband thankfully had the tip from a local to go to La Carreta and drive right on by its more famous counterpart Versailles. We walked in around 7 and were seated immediately. Water arrived promptly and we placed our order for guava mojitos, again a recommendation from a local. I've never had a mojito like this and I'm dying to find a copy cat recipe. I have a feeling I won't be able to replicate this one. Guess I'll just have to come back. Our croquetas appetizer arrived very hot and crispy. Not long after, the entrees arrived. My husband was a little disappointed in his fried fish chunks order, only a few pieces about the size of a walnut were on the plate. Luckily he had lots of rice and sweet plantains on his plate. I was thrilled with my order of vaca frita. Crispy pieces of pork with sautéed onion covered about 1/3 of my plate. The sides of sweet plantains and rice/beans were also delicious. I was (for once in my life) hesitant to share my entree with my husband because I selfishly wanted it all. The check came and proved this place is a great value for great food. Wanting a Cubano, we strolled here. It was a Sunday, it was busy, but tables were available! Although everyone was ordering breakfast, we wanted sandwiches, and there was no problem, those were served all day. Service was good - our waitress got a little confused on our order, (got 1 coffee not 2) but nothing earth shattering - but immediately brought the 2nd cup. Our sandwiches came, the Cubano and the media noche. Both were fantastic. I'm allergic to mustard, so I opted for the media niche sans mustard - and the hubby tasted my sandwich, said it needed acidity, but I thought it was great. He loved his Cubano, and the flavors of the media noche - even without the acidity that it lacked - due to my own choosing. The food was average. The ice tea did not taste like ice tea. The drinks came to the table with no ice almost. The waitress Aliane A kept bringing things on her tray but would never serve them on our table. I ordered a Coke, brought it with her, but never served the coke ... she walked away with it! Be forewarned, service is notoriously slow at this location but it was fine for us since we weren't in a hurry. The place feels like an old-school diner in a lot of ways but I love it. We like the atmosphere, the food, and above all, we have always received excellent service there, until last night. From the moment my husband and I walked in, they seated us at a table I didn't like, and when I mentioned it, the hostess refused to move us to a different table; she simply left us there, ignoring me.Then, the waitress, completely lacking in professional ethics, was not courteous and didn't even introduce herself. When ordering the drinks, I requested extra lemon or lime, and after insisting several times, she finally brought it to me.After ordering our meal, which was excellent as always, we decided to order dessert. I asked the waitress what desserts they had, and she told me to look at the menu, as they were all listed there. Meh, just ok. It's been ages that we don't go to La Carreta. I guess it's a good thing, because typically that's where we go after a service at the funeral home. We went in the other day, on a weekend, for a late lunch/ early dinner. It was fairly full, but we were seated right away. We got water right away, then the server came to take our order. She seemed a bit frustrated that we were not all ready to order at that exact moment. So I guess she figured that she would make us wait longer than necessary once we were ready. While taking our order, she would not even look at us. she was constantly scanning the room. The food came out fairly quick though, but she was busy chatting with other servers to even bother checking on satisfaction. On to the food. Not much to say really. Everything was pretty bland. I ordered Vaca Frita which pretty much didn't taste like anything. My husband's pork chunks were dry, but did have a bit of flavor. One day, I will figure out the difference between Moros & Congri. Dining at La Carreta in Miami's Little Havana is such a treat. My bf and I went at nighttime at around 9 pm on a weekday and service was still impeccable and fast! The ambiance was better than a diner (made it seem like it was a night out) but there was a homey and casual vibe thanks to the helpful Spanish speaking employees, unique decorations, and fun salsa music. My husband was craving some authentic Cuban food. So, we stopped by La Carreta. It was not a busy time and we were seated quickly. Unfortunately, they didn't serve what my husband wanted, which was a liver steak. He ordered masitas, and I ordered lechon asado. Hot butter Cuban bread came quickly and we were patiently waiting for our food. Once our food came, I noticed that my food was lukewarm. Some of the pieces of pork were not hot enough to be soft, and I noticed some grease started to get hardened. I had to ask our waiter to heat the food. He took my plate and came back with warm food. However, it was still not hot. But I was hungry and I ate it like it. I guess they make food ahead and don't bother to heat up? I was a bit disappointed. I'm guessing the pork had been on dry heat for hours as it was barely edible, tough, and quite dry. Definitely, not delicious. Also, the bread seemed old and hard. Barely any onions and no mayo to be seen. Asking for some onions, seemed like a great bother. Other than that the waiter was accommodating and was tipped properly. My guests enjoyed the churrasco, but I believe it was subpar. There are too many good places on Calle Ocho to go here. Over $100 for a sandwich, 2 churrasco, and 3 beer.
