I hate to say this but I would NOT suggest this place at all. Everything was dirty, they wouldn't let me take my salsa or curtido with me (maybe wanted to be reused idkkk) they charged me for water bottle even though I didn't order it? And I'm pretty sure pupusas gave me food poisoning. Services was very meh. I feel so horrible saying this but I would never return or recommend place to anyone :( read more

The food was good the only thing that they should try to improve would be the encurtido ( the topping of the pupusas) it's nothing like the real Salvadorian one. It had no flavor, no taste and this is a big part of eating the pupusas. read more

This is my favorite and I mean favorite Salvi spot in all of Ventura county. I will drive from Oxnard just to eat here. This is the closest you can get to authentic Salvi food. Next closest is the valley. The location is small, but it's never crowded. Food does take some time to make because it's all fresh. The casamiento & horchata are my go to. They even have quesadillas and other Salvi pastries/goodies. I really recommend this location and it's a huge staple in the community. read more

We were here with 6 other friends for the first time, and shared the Salvadorian dishes, family style. None of us were familiar with Salvadorian dishes, so anxious to try it. We could not call ahead for a reservation, nor could we get a takeout menu ahead of coming in so we could figure out what we wanted. Food was good, but the wait seemed very long, as they make the Pupusa fresh. And the restaurant was very busy, with a lot of takeouts. Our group liked the various dishes. However, we tried to order a beef dish on the menu, and we were told they didn't have any beef! We wanted tap water, and they don't have any (HUH?!!!) - only bottled water at a charge! Also, when we tried to pay by credit card, there was a 3% surcharge. Restaurant is a bit small. I'd recommend phoning in the order ahead of time for takeouts if you do not wish to wait. read more

This restaurant is a true gem for authentic Salvadoran food. Everything tasted homemade and full of traditional flavor. The pupusas were especially good--fresh, perfectly cooked, and clearly made with care. The plantains were also excellent, sweet and perfectly caramelized, and paired really well with the rest of the meal. You can tell a lot of pride goes into the food here. THEY CHANGED THE COOK! - The only good true Salvadoran cuisine around. Both my parents are from El Salvador so finding this place was incredible. It takes me back to my childhood dinners. If you want a true salvi experience get 2 pupusa's, 1 revuelta and 1 loroco. Then get platanos fritos with breans and cream. I love this place, hope it sticks around. read more

This was my first experience in a Salvadorian restaurant and trying pupusas. The pupusas were delicious! I got the one with pork, beans and cheese and one that was cheese with flowers. Both were excellent. I also got chicken and pork tamales. They were very good as well. The service was quick. I got my food in 15 minutes! The young lady who took my order to go was very polite and helpful in deciding what I should order. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

My absolute favorite go to when I need my yummy Salvadoran foos fix! Authentic and reasonably priced! Only complaint, is that they do take some time. So make sure you go when you're not in a hurry. But I promised it's worth it!! All this coming from a native Salvadoran! :) read more

First time trying Pupusas and they are delicious at La Carreta! I got the rice meat and bean and just pork pupusas. I would say the all pork one is better because it's more tasty meat! I thought the hot sauces were great too! I'm taking a star off the rating because the service was slow as they were understaffed. Extremely disappointed in every aspect. I had to wait close to an hour for 1 "Desayuno Típico" The food was mediocre, tasteless, overcooked & dry. May I add EXTREMELY overpriced. Place was really dirty, there were dirty dishes all on the counter, menus were disgusting, just two sheets of paper stapled together with food residue on them. The tamales is the most tender, microwaves we'll even after taking off the leaves enveloped with. Most tamales get dry after the leaves gets taken off to eat. Best Papusas Ever home made. If you go to Pizza Hut pickup, stop by the Salvadorian place. It's unfortunate that this gem is hidden between Arby's and Pizza Hut. read more

Meh, I had higher expectations for this place. As you walk in the decor makes you feel that it's very authentic and cozy however the food was just ok. Nothing special. It didn't taste bad but I've had better. Prices are too expensive for the slow service and time it takes for them to bring out your food. They don't even offer a cup of water. Horrible customer service!! I placed an order over the phone, when I went to pick it up I was so hungry so I told the lady I'm going to eat in the restaurant , she said I'm not allow to seat and stay and also she said I have to leave because my order was over the phone , so rude ! I prefer Salvadorian tamales to Mexican tamales. I came here and there was a large order before me so I've learned that it's best to call your order in ahead of time. I enjoyed the chicken tamale and the pupusa. I would return for sure. read more

Delicious Pupusas at this hidden little gem. Tucked away in a shopping center I've easily missed it for years. So happy to have found them on Yelp because this spot satisfies my Pupusas cravings without having to drive all the way to LA. Cozy little no frills restaurant. Order at the counter, large menu displayed. Plenty of tables and bar seating despite it being a smaller establishment. Now back to the Pupusas I highly recommend the revueltas which is pork, cheese, and beans. Also they are extremely well priced, a cheap delicious meal. this place is HORRIBLE. Horrible service. the food was at most a 2/10 And that's Being generou. AND THEY HAVE RATS. There was food on the table and floors which means not even the rats like the food. The owner is a sad excuse of a human. the staff is all rude and they don't even look like they wanted to show up to work. worst place to eat in Thousand Oaks you might as well go to mcdonalds. coming from a salvadorian w the BEST taste in food, this place has the best pupusas and ensalada drink ive everrrr tried in the valley. I love the Revueltas de Arroz, SOO GOOD. I wish the customer service was better, alot of the older women have really nasty attitudes but i was raised with a salvadorian woman so i know its not personal and i just ignore it but alot of the time theyll be in a bad mood so keep that in mind. Tbh the restaurant itself is pretty outdated but that doesnt matter when the food is good read more

Came in here for my lunch hour with my co workers. Service was horrible. We waited so long for our food that it took the whole hour and we had to take our food to go. They were definitely short staffed and could've said so to begin with but didn't. On top of that everyone looked pissed off at each other and were arguing at one point. We had to scarf down our food on the way back to work. As for the pupusas itself....they had good filling and weren't full of masa. They were okay but not amazing. Yuca con chicharron was better and their pastelito had more veggies then chicken and flavor was okay. I Wouldn't come back here. read more

Service was nice, hands off mostly. Outdoor tables were open on Friday night around 7. A little loud from highway traffic. read more

Can someone tell why in the hell this place has even 3 stars ???? Horrible environment & the worst customer service I have experienced in my life . -as soon as I got there I was impressed that all tables were empty but haven't been cleaned after customers used them . Dirty napkins all over , I was like wtf ???? Then I asked the lady if she could please clean one of the tables for me & she was very rude . Also we waited about 1 hour to get our food & ordered some to go right away & waited another hour . Then as I was seated I experienced a lot of angry customers waiting in line @ nobody was paying attention to them . Just a horrible place . Don't even bother to come here guys . I had found this place by total accident while skimming through Yelp. I'm so happy I found this little gem! The pupusas were absolutely on point and a good size as well. I couldn't stop eating even when I was full, it was just all so delicious! I'm definitely returning again to eat here again. Service is a little slow, but the restaurant did receive large orders that they try to fill quickly as everything is almost made to order. A perfect spot for me to engage in conversation with friends/family while eating. Be sure to leave a tip, those ladies are working hard! read more

My name is Leydy and proudly own this establishment. I have been cooking ever since I was a little girl. I was born and raised in El Salvador and growing up there I always helped my grandmother cook and always paid close attention to what she was doing. I quickly learned and developed my own style of cooking. I have own and operated many types of businesses but never did what I passion the most.......cooking! After many years I finally did it; I opened up my own place, serving the type of food I know the most. Salvadorean is very different from Mexican and I have made it my mission to show everyone the differences. Everything I make in my kitchen is fresh and made from scratch. It's a family restaurant so only family works here. We're all Salvadorean so we know what we are talking about when it comes to Salvadorean food. My wife got a pepsi and I got a jamaica. Joseline the waitress immediately brought us chips and salsa and was very attentive and friendly throughout the entire encounter. She offered us more chips, our food came out fast and the music and the vibe all in all was relaxing, accomodating and enjoyable. Big portions and the food was delicious. The pupusas were freshly made, the pan con pollo was suculent. We will be returning soon. Perfect ambiance to eat peacefully and enjoy salvadorean cuisine. The decor was definitely on point. I have the privilege of growing up with a huge Salvadorean influence in my life since my step-mother is from El Salvador and her and her family embraced me as one of their own so I have been totally engulfed by their culture. I am of Mexican decent with a huge Central American influence and so grateful for it. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this place a few year ago, but ate here for the first time with reservations and low expectations on authenticity. Boy was I wrong. The food here is great! Only to be beat by one of the aunts in the family, but compared to all the other Salvadorean restaurants I have been to, this place a a tough competitor. If you have never had pupusas, I would start with the revuelta. It's a mixture of beans, cheese, and shredded pork. you get it all and will be glad for it. Insider tip: I would ask to add loroco to the cheese. It's a flavorful flower that is added to the cheese which really adds a distinct and delicious flavor to the pupusa. When you eat the pupusa you must add curtido (fermented, shredded cabbage) to really get the full enjoyment of what you are about to eat, but if you are not big on spicy food, I would add a little at a time since it tends to be a little spicy at times. It depends on the batch you get. You definitely want to come to this place and try more things off the menu. The fried plantains are a must and salvadoreans eat them with sour cream. Yum! It's a nice contrast between the sweetness of the plantain and the flavor of the cream. The salvadorean tamales are great as well, but nothing like the Mexican ones except for the fact that it is wrapped masa. I am a big fan of those as well, but they are not for everyone. I no longer have to drive to San Fernando to eat pupusas when the cravings kick in. FYI- They don't sell alcohol, but you can buy a bottle of what you want at the liquor store next door and enjoy it with your meal. They will happily provide you with a glass for your wine if you need one. The music is a bit louder here than most restaurants, but personally, I like it. It brings a sense of happiness and party-like atmosphere and you know us Latinos, we are always up for a party and good times. read more

This is a great place to come for some authentic El Salvadorian cuisine. Here's my take on the food we ordered: 1. Sopa de Mariscos (Seafood soup): They do not lie when they say mariscos! That soup was huge and was LOADED with crab legs, clams, shrimp, and fish. The broth was really good too. I've never seen a restaurant put as much seafood in their soup as they do. Definitely worth the money. 2. Pupusa sampler: We got the pork and chicken pupusa sampler. It was excellent and there was definitely enough food for 2 people. It came out fresh and was delicious. The only downside is that it took quite a while to get the food. We waited approx. 45 min (during lunch hour) to get the food so we are ordering take-out in the future. This is the only place that I know has Salvadorean cousin! But I'm telling you their pupusas are the best in town! I always ordered the tamales and yucca frita, YUMMY!!! Is not a place to go in seat down with your family and have a nice dinner... I will recommend them to get a place where they can place more tables and they need to hire more personnel too! Disrespectful ownership…read more I was at Pupuseria La Estrella yesterday and personally witnessed what happened with a family. I normally don't write reviews about situations that don't involve me directly, but after seeing how this family was treated, I feel compelled to speak up. The father calmly brought a price discrepancy to the employee's attention. He was not rude or disrespectful. He simply explained that the menu clearly showed one price for what he ordered and he was over charged and that he expected the advertised price to be honored. The employee explained that the menu was outdated and what he was charged was the new price. The customer again calmly explained his position. Another woman came out and repeated that the posted menu on their wall had the wrong price and the price he was charged was the correct amount. Then things took a very disappointing turn. After the customer mentioned that the advertised price should be honored and that he could report the pricing discrepancy to the Better Business Bureau, a woman who appeared to be the owner became involved. From what I witnessed, instead of trying to resolve the situation professionally, she instructed the staff to refund the customer and kick his entire family out of the restaurant. I was sitting there and witnessed this unfold firsthand. What bothered me most was that the customer wasn't screaming, threatening anyone, or causing a scene. He was simply standing up for what he believed was right after seeing an advertised price that didn't match what he was being charged. And all of this happened over a couple of bucks. As another customer sitting there, it was uncomfortable and honestly shocking to watch. Businesses are going to make mistakes. Prices change. Menus don't always get updated. But when that happens, the appropriate response is to apologize, acknowledge the mistake, and make the customer feel respected. The lady who kicked them out just showed no interest in doing the right thing. Very disrespectful to the man and his family. After witnessing what happened I don't think I will ever come back. Small business that treats paying customers this way don't deserve to be supported by our C-Town community. I hope ownership takes a serious look at how this situation was handled because the food may be docent, but good customer service means nothing if customers aren't treated with basic respect when there is a disagreement. I witnessed it firsthand, and in my opinion, the way this family was treated was completely unnecessary and unprofessional by the trashy talk of that lady.

People play their phones on open speakers, all while a soccer game is going on a tv high on the wall. There's one restroom, albeit immaculately clean, but still just one so you better be quick. This is not a quick serve restaurant. Wait service, such as it is, is slow and unobservant. I.e. we had to ask for chips, and when they arrived, no napkins, so we had to wait for the rest of our order to be able to wipe our hands. Our burning question from the menu was WTH are "glass" drinks? We asked and the waiter gestured towards the refrigerator with bottled drinks. Ok? So how are they different from "bottled" drinks on the menu? I'll post a photo so you can maybe decipher its meaning. We never got a straight answer. But what was crystal clear is, they don't offer fountain drinks. And no iced tea. If there was water, we weren't offered any. We arrived 10 minutes before a table next to us, with three guys. Within just a few minutes they were enjoying their lunches while we sat there. Finally when ours arrived, yeah it was fine, but nothing to do two huzzahs and a backflip over. And definitely not something I'd go out of my way for. I ordered the "regular" (as opposed to Oaxacan) enchilada plate with green sauce. I have a pretty good tolerance for "hot spicy", but this one made me sweat. Luckily, with their apposite of drink offerings, I had horchata, which helped to put out the fire. My husband ordered the chile relleno plate. He enjoyed it and said the sauce atop it was uniquely good. Their rice and beans were pretty good; needed a little salt on the beans. Maybe we'd return for takeout, but if you're considering this establishment for date night... don't.
