My friend found this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try, so we decided to stop by. It's an Oaxacan restaurant known for their mole negro, which is one of their specialties. I ordered the enchiladas de mole negro. I'm Peruvian, and the flavor wasn't quite my personal preference, but I took the leftovers home and my husband who is Mexican and a big fan of mole absolutely loved it. So if you enjoy traditional mole, you'll probably appreciate it. My friend ordered the mole negro with rice and completely devoured her plate. She said she really enjoyed the flavor. I also ordered the Oaxacan horchata, and that was a highlight for me. I loved it so much very refreshing and delicious. The customer service was alright, a bit slow, but understandable since there was only one girl working the register and serving tables at the same time. The restaurant itself is cozy, and the bathroom was clean, which I always appreciate. Overall, it was a nice experience trying a traditional Oaxacan spot. read more

For once, the Yelpers are not being their usual, brutal selves. So I'm going to bring down some reality here. The food is pretty good. I go out frequently and I cook at home a lot so I think I have pretty good perspective. We consume a fair amount of "authentic" Mexican food, and we travel to Mexico frequently. Recently we went to La Katrina and Manny's. Each has their own style but I wouldn't say one is hands down better in terms of food quality. But where this place sucks is atmosphere. Yelpers are being kind when they say it's a "hole in the wall". People, it's a dive. It's hot and stuffy. It can accommodate maybe 20 guests. 90% of the male patrons wear baseball caps. Parents entertain children by blowing up balloons then releasing them to make buzzy noises. Hahaha funny, NOT. People play their phones on open speakers, all while a soccer game is going on a tv high on the wall. There's one restroom, albeit immaculately clean, but still just one so you better be quick. This is not a quick serve restaurant. Wait service, such as it is, is slow and unobservant. I.e. we had to ask for chips, and when they arrived, no napkins, so we had to wait for the rest of our order to be able to wipe our hands. Our burning question from the menu was WTH are "glass" drinks? We asked and the waiter gestured towards the refrigerator with bottled drinks. Ok? So how are they different from "bottled" drinks on the menu? I'll post a photo so you can maybe decipher its meaning. We never got a straight answer. But what was crystal clear is, they don't offer fountain drinks. And no iced tea. If there was water, we weren't offered any. We arrived 10 minutes before a table next to us, with three guys. Within just a few minutes they were enjoying their lunches while we sat there. Finally when ours arrived, yeah it was fine, but nothing to do two huzzahs and a backflip over. And definitely not something I'd go out of my way for. I ordered the "regular" (as opposed to Oaxacan) enchilada plate with green sauce. I have a pretty good tolerance for "hot spicy", but this one made me sweat. Luckily, with their apposite of drink offerings, I had horchata, which helped to put out the fire. My husband ordered the chile relleno plate. He enjoyed it and said the sauce atop it was uniquely good. Their rice and beans were pretty good; needed a little salt on the beans. Maybe we'd return for takeout, but if you're considering this establishment for date night... don't. read more

This is a homey and cozy place near Moorpark town center. The Horchata comes with real cantaloupe and walnuts. The staff is kind and courteous, and they treat you like old schoolmates or family. There is a giant TV with Mexican shows on, which interested me for their exotic content. There are home made snacks for sale and the tacos use decent meat, at least medium quality. The food was amazing as you can tell I ate some before taking the picture. The salsa, which came with the burrito, had a nice kick. We ordered 4 burritos and two tacos. My friend had us try a New Mexican restaurant in Moorpark and I'd rate it a solid 3.75 but we round up here so they get a lovely 4 stars. Nice to try something new and to support a local, mom and pop business. The restaurant is tucked away in a busy but small shopping center so it's easy to miss. This isn't off the main drag in Moorpark but wasn't far off the main road. Makes sense though why we hadn't seen it before. The parking is a little tight and parking fills up fast but coming on a weekday night there were some spots available. The restaurant itself didn't have much in terms of decor and design. I would definitely say this is a very causal spot and not one where you'd dress up or that it really had the ambiance of a busier Mexican restaurant in town. This is definitely a hole in the wall, local spot. Nothing wrong with this, we were just unaware until we got here. This spot could use a little decorating and adding some warmth to the place so it feels more like a place people would want to sit down to dine vs focus on to go orders. Otherwise though the inside was clean and spacious. We also liked the tv they had above where we sat as they played some unique music videos in Spanish which we enjoyed watching and commenting on while we waited. The pricing was very reasonable for how much food they gave and the quality seemed there. Most dishes were under $16 and they were plentiful. The menu is in Spanish but it was easy to translate and understand the majority of this dishes. The menu wasn't too big but had some unique and well throughout options. Lots of traditional Mexican fair and classic combinations. The staff here were very nice, there was actually one girl who seemed to be running the place and she did a really good job. While you can order at the counter, they do have menus and when we noted dining in she helped us grab a table and gave us the physical menus to look over. It's nice that despite being a casual place they do provide food service and take your order at your table if you request. This girl was very friendly and sweet. She took orders, brought our drinks, and managed the front alone from what I could see. It wasn't busy inside so it all worked out. The food was pretty darn tasty. I had the red Oaxaca enchiladas and they were really fabulous. I'm not normally a fan of chicken enchiladas but these were cooked well and the chicken didn't overshadow the dish. The red chipotle sauce all over the plate was tasty, surprised how saucy they made the dish but I always like that. I loved the little touches like fresh onion on top, totally gave the dish a nice crunch and broke up the flavors in a classic but tasty way. The red rice was good, nothing crazy and also tasty refried beans. In the city of Moorpark it's really nice that they have a local no frills mexican restaurant nearby. While I don't know if I'll be craving this spot again soon it was for sure tasty and the staff were friendly here, they deserve your business. read more

When you park in their parking lot there's a funky smell. It almost made me turn around and leave, this is definitely and little hole in the wall but do not be afraid to walk in and order. My large party all ordered different options and I got to try many different things... every single item was DELICIOUS. from the entrees to things as simple as the chips, salsa and guac everything was amazingly good. I usually order food by phone and pick up the food. This last time I came in to eat for the first time. The ambience is your typical hole-in-the-wall place with that quintessential Mexican vibe. I've been to many places that look like this so it feels like home to me. I've tried their tacos, burritos, tortas, mole negro, and chile relleno. Everything I've had is delicious and it is very consistent every time I come in here. And that's coming from someone who is a bit of a food snob too. I always do research of where I'm going to eat on trips and I don't mind paying up for good food. That said, I love hole-in-the-wall type places as long as they have good flavor. This place hasn't disappointed yet. To give you a comparison, there's other Mexican spots nearby that can be good at times like Gutierrez. But these other places really suffer from consistency. Give this place a shot! This place is really good. There aren't that many people inside most times I come. I think people just drive by this place and judge it by the outside. This area in particular has either really old or really ugly looking business structures. I just moved to Moorpark and being the foodie that I am, I went out to look for something yummy. I had no idea that I would end up eating Oaxacan. I hesitated a little at first but glad I had the courage to try something new. The food was delicious. Very generous portion and authentic flavor. I ordered a Huarache with chicken. The chicken had that street taco flavor and texture. Very good seasoning. There was a green tomatillo sauce that accompanied the dish. The sauce was a little tangy for my taste. After I ordered a side of black beans and the Cotija cheese off set it a little. The Huarache was thin and had a pinto bean filling inside. This reminded me of the Mexican gorditas. The service was good and the restaurant was descent. They had Rock en Español playing on the background which lighten up the place. Very humble and kind people. The service was excellent. The drink was made of passion fruit and it was refreshing and just the right amount of sweet. I'm definitely coming back and highly recommend this place. I found La Zapoteca on Yelp and I've had two great lunches after playing golf. Really good food with authentic non-Americanized fare. Had a tasty, freshly made beef burrito that was 5 star. Also had a red sauced chicken dish that one of the owners brought from Mexico that was awesome. The people are so nice. The best part of the meal were the beans. The rice was mushy and slimy and had no flavor whatsoever. The taco meat was basic at best. The tortillas were warm but extremely undercooked, they till had that straight out of the fridge taste. The green salsa was ok the red had no heat to it basically water. The service was good. The cashier was friendly and attentive while I was there and assured me my order was coming up after a few minutes. Finally the ambiance. It was like being in Mexico. Great family owned restaurant! Their decor is simple, pleasant,and indicative of the Olmec/Mayan area and is welcoming. Their enmoladas are delicious, but can be a bit spicy for kids. HOWEVER, their mole negro enmoladas and their tlayuda (cecina, tasajo, and chorizo) are delicious and are our favorite! The spread (chicharrón and lard with the blended black refried beans) they use on the tlayuda, along with the crisp tlayuda shell make the perfect combination, then topped with tasajo (marinated pork strips)...DELICIOUS! The horchata Oaxaqueña (horchata with prickly pear sorbet, diced cantaloupe, and walnuts) is deliciously refreshing and a treat! The food is served rather quick, considering it is prepared as you order. The young girl (cashier, server) and her parents (cooks) always has a smile on her face and is very polite! The owner gave us great customer service on our first visit, we placed an order on a food item that had sold out and to make up for the inconvenience she threw in some freebies. We gave this place a second shot and I'm so glad we did. Since then the food has been a 5 star experience. We've tried several food options from their menu: guacamole, salsas, mole, queso birria tacos, chile relleno, tortas, burritos and a fish dish. The portions were generous, ensuring that I had enough to enjoy later. The ambiance is casual, small for large parties with a few tables for parties of 4.
