Finally found some authentic Dominican food here in Houston. My wife who is Dominican was craving some home cooked food and this was the next best thing. The service has always been good every time we have went and the food is pretty authentic. There is no alcohol on location but you can go and buy it at the liquor store next and they will open for you. Pastel- skip, as a Puerto Rican you know when the pastel is fresh and no reheated. The pastel does not go with ground beef. The alcapurria - get, it is a humongous size, like pastel size, a little bit too salty and burn but good. Carne frita con tostones - a go, good size portion of meat, but only 2 pieces of tostones. Tomorrow will mark 3 years since my mom passed away. On her anniversary I like to do things that remind me of her. This restaurant has all the classic Puerto Rican dishes that my mom would cook for me growing up so I had to come try it out. This place took me down memory Lane. We started the meal with some appetizers; unfortunately they did not have empanadas, which were my moms favorite so we settled for the Arepa con queso and the chicken one. The chicken arepa was wayyy better than the cheese. The dishes we ordered had very authentic Dominican and Puerto Rican flavors. We ordered three dishes: La Bandeja Paisa, Bistec Encebollado, and Locrio de pollo. My favorite part of each dish were the red beans; so full of flavor! Some dishes don't come with beans so be sure to add. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was for three reasons. The lady forgot our arepa with cheese, they did not have desert, and they were out of empanadas. Otherwise, this place met my expectations and was able to help with remembering my mom! read more

This place is about as authentic as it gets for South American food. My wife is from Puerto Rico and it has her approval as well as mine! The UN battered fried chicken with rice and maduros with a malta beverage is my favorite dish. The service is great but just be prepared it is authentic so knowing a little Spanish helps. Never in my life have I tried something so salty and horrible. The alcapurrias here were HORRIBLE! I'm from Chicago and alcapurrias are made fresh daily and left under heat lamp to stay hot. Here you can tell it's frozen because some parts were hot and some were cold. Customer service sucked also (the woman was beautiful) lol but wasn't friendly at all. We went to celebrate our 44th. anniversary. We have NO regrets and we will return. The menu is bi-lingual but the co-owner Julio Caesar will help you with your choices and explains what you are ordering. We shared an order of mofungo which was excellent and heavy in garlic which came with 2 large pieces of fried pork. My wife had the rice with gandulues with pastele. She wasn't pleased with the pastele. I had the same rice and we both enjoyed it. I had a very tasty portion of stewed beef. The portions were very large which is a good thing when the food was so good and tasty. Beware that everything comes out hot and don't be in a rush as they are cooking it fresh. I was excited to find this place because I love Spanish food. The prices were reasonable but I was disappointed with the customer service. The young waitress assigned to our table got very offended when I asked her to speak in English. She had an attitude the entire time after that. Beautiful but rude. I went a few weeks ago and dined in. At the end of lunch, in addition to the cost of the meals, I paid about 18% in fees (15% the owner charges for "having to change the menu" and 3% for using my debit to pay). Although the 15% was listed at the very bottom and in small letters of the menu, this is not something that I have ever been charged for at a restaurant before so I did not look, nor even consider it a possibility. Doesn't matter that this is a hole in the wall, if you're planning to charge your customers for "a new menu", up-charge the individual meals (reasonably), don't charge an additional 15% to every customer. For my tab, that was a whole meal. I paid close to $77. And given the total of my meal, how is it that I still paid 3% just to use my debit? Definitely not going back. Food is good. Portions are always satisfying. I have eaten in and had take out from this place. I would say take out is our preference. But the wait is always longer than they tell you. Just be prepared. The team in the kitchen is the mom and grandma so be patient because this is a family restaurant. Great way to get some home cooking at reasonable prices! It's not the best food you'll have but it's definitely home cooking that will satisfy your Caribbean food craving. Had never had Puerto Rican food so i decided to give this place a try. Since i didn't know what to order, the waiter recommended alcapurrias and they were pretty big and good. The toston was even bigger and way better, the pork meat was very well marinated and the avocado gave it a wonderful flavor. The guava with milk drink was fantastic. The food was authentic and amazing! My husband ordered the fried pork with the skin (don't remember the actual name of the dish) and I had the Tostonazo Carne Desmechada. We also ordered empanadas, and got two more to-go after realizing how good they were. For drinks we both got the agua Jamaica which tasted so freaking good. The service was great, though some of the employees did not speak English we still were able to communicate really well. Everything seasoned very well and the food was priced perfectly. Being from PR is hard to find places that have our favorites in out side of town. Heard about La Casa Del Mofongo, and gave it a try on Sunday afternoon. It was completely empty when we arrived, service was good, and they cooked everything from scratch. Everything came to our table at the same time. We had mofongo with creole shrimp, with garlic shrimp and with fried pork. The consistency of the plantain in the mofongo was authentic. Soft, and well seasoned. For alimony it felt we were home. Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, I have had many chances to eat Mofongo. This place is as original as it could be with very good flavor. Portions are almost too large but manageable and price is very reasonable. I expected to pay over $15 dollars per plate but was pleasantly surprised when I saw the menu. If you care for mofongo with garlic and pork grind mashed together, you can order plain for much less than $10 or you can get your choice of meats included next to the mofongo for about $10. There are pros and cons to this review. The cons: Small restaurant with no showing off what kind of restaurant it is. Dark doors (and windows?) and a sign-up above. I feel pictures of their dishes in the window should be presented and the restaurant to look more festive outside. The parking lot is small and you'd have to squeeze into some parking areas and watch out for cars passing by. Also, it's not in the greatest area either. That's the reason why it has 4 stars instead of 5 stars. The pros: I'm Puerto Rican from Long Island, N.Y., and have been to PLENTY of Spanish restaurants in my life, and let me tell you; the dish we bought took me home. We had pernil with sweet plantains and Spanish rice which was DELICIOUS! Everything was sooo good. I wish the portions were bigger, but that's me. Horrible experience! Beware! They stole my money! I went with my family (a total of four people) to experience the food from my country of origin PR. The mofongo was pretty good but the sancocho was subpar and the rest of the food was ok. This wasn't the big problem. The big problem came when it was time to pay and they charged me a total of $116! When I saw the receipt, I noticed that they had taken a $31 tip. I asked why they took that much out for a tip and they said that they automatically add a 15% tip to a group of four or more and that it was written on the menu. When I looked at the menu, it was in very small print at the very bottom. I told them that I had no idea of they were going to take that much for a tip (30%), specially when the service wasn't all that good and that nobody would really notice that 15% tip disclaimer at the bottom of the menu. I asked for my money back and they said they couldn't reverse or cancel the transaction, so I said no problem, just give me my money back in cash and they said they couldn't do that either. I asked for the manager and they said the manager was unavailable. So that, my friends, is how I got my money stolen from this mediocre restaurant. They gave me no recourse and/or options. They should be ashamed of themselves for stealing money from people, that is not the way to do business. read more
