During my trip to West Texas, I ended up eating here because of the great reviews. Maybe it was the reviews or maybe it was something else, but I left this place sadly disappointed. First of all, they charge for refilling the tortilla bowl; I find that weird since they give you the first one free. Second of all, my food tasted like they went to Taco Cabana bought it and then added more salt to it. There was nothing authentic about their enchiladas! My mother made better enchiladas using American cheese and the microwave. Actually, that's not a fair comparison because the cheese tasted worse than American Cheese. This has been the best Mexican place I've been to in years, and I've lived in Texas for three quarters of my life. First, the service. Needs a bit of work, since we were seated at a dirty table that was quickly cleaned after we sat down. No Michelin stars anytime soon, unfortunately. I can forgive that, however, as they were seemingly short on waitstaff. Still, our waiter was very friendly and accommodating to our gringo tastes. She was even very helpful when it came to our vegetarian requests! Overall, this place is well off in service given how small it is. Next, the menu. My mom and I are vegetarian, so at typical Mexican restaurants, we tend to mindlessly gnaw on chips and salsa until whatever neutered cheese-and-refried-beans concoction they whip up for us pops out of the kitchen. However, this restaurant had a lot to offer for our taste! We had our choice of many traditional (and Tex-Mex) meals with vegetarian twists. Even the Spanish Rice was made without chicken stock! Always a refreshing change of pace. Finally, the food. I had a plate of cheese enchiladas while my mom had a vegetable quesadilla (I don't remember what it was called specifically, but it typically has chicken so we asked for it without chicken). My enchiladas seemed like standard fare. They could have used some sautéed diced vegetables for a bit of an added flavor, but that wasn't what I asked for so I'd be greedy to expect it. The cheese was fresh and not oily as I'd find at chain Mexican restaurants. The tortillas were also top notch. However, the true delight in the enchiladas came from the amazing sauce. It had such a rich flavor profile, and much more powerful taste-wise than anything I have eaten in a long time. It was as if the taco bell fire sauce decided it wanted to be taken seriously so went and got that degree from UT Austin it had wanted for years and now works as an actuary at a life insurance company with a wife, three kids and a dog. This simply cannot be missed. Meanwhile, my mom's quesadilla was also seemingly standard fare. She gave me a small slice to sample. The vegetables were fresh, cooked right, and seasoned well. The tortilla was a bit drier than I'd have hoped but otherwise was pretty solid. There wasn't much cheese; this is good for my mom who is trying to keep track of what she eats, but for anyone who wants to order it, bear that in mind going forward. However, like the enchiladas, the kicker was the sauce, in this case some guacamole. It was a unique recipe and, as someone who is generally reluctant to adulterate his food with guac, I found myself regretting only receiving a sample. Definitely worth a try. In conclusion, la casita is certainly a restaurant worth visiting. Bear in mind, this is through the tinted lenses of a vegetarian, but it was a rewarding experience nonetheless. read more

We went here after a week of hiking at Big Bend. No doubt some of the best mexican food i've had, and it wasn't just because I was hungry. Huge portions and nice folks working there, we had no problems with service. Some woman sat down at a table in the back corner and wasn't waited on right away, as there was only one server. She got up in a huff, told the poor girl off then stormed out. Way to have patience people, i'll be back next time i'm in the area. read more

Stopped in during a road trip. Very tasty food and quick service, in spite of the fact that the place was PACKED. We were so impressed by the waitress - she was hauling ass around the joint and getting everyone everything they needed. Neat little local dive with great service. The Beef Fajitas, though, were tough as boot leather. I love eating at small, out of the way places, and this certainly fit the bill. I may have enjoyed the meal more if I had eaten something different. We were driving back from Big Bend National Park, and stopped in Alpine to eat. This place is definitely off the main roads, but it is so worth it. The food is amazing! I had the fajita burrito, and it was delicious. The wait isn't long, even if it's crowded, and it usually is crowded with locals. Prices are pretty good too, so I highly recommend! One thing to be aware of, though--no credit cards; only cash or checks. Also, no liquor, so don't come here looking for margaritas. read more

If you want good Mexican food drive on to Marfa Burrito where the food is fabulous. Here, it is average. NO Mexicans = a bad sign for a Mexican restaurant. The asada I could tell was going to be bad just by the color. They could also clean the bathroom - surely a little elbow grease is possible and Zep, Clorox, Lysol are probably available at Porters. read more

The Lacasita Mexican restaurant is the place to go in Alpine Texas, if you are disabled with a service dog. Get out your service vest, enter, get thrown out because they are in business to discriminate. They have been in operation for decades, they should know what rights the Federal law provides disabled people and their service animals. So if you have one, you might stop in and Sue these idiots for discrimination. I have eaten there many times before I became disabled. The food is not good quality, the service has never been great. It's just limited in Alpine when you are tired and hungry. They need to be sued and educated. Anyone can Google up what is required by law, maybe they are to stupid to read. People like them should not be in the business of serving the public. read more

It's alright when Alicia's, El Patio, La Calavera, and Magoo's are closed. Enchilada sauces are bland and far too watery. Rice is kind... sticky? Beans are either way too watery, or so thick you'd think it came out of those microwavable bags. It's as if nothing has much, if any, authentic flavor, or any heat to it. Pretty certain they're still using canned sauces for most entrees. When I was younger, and still unversed on good authentic Mexican food, I thought this place was the bees knees. And then I learned better. If you're looking for decent food, without any razzle-dazzle flavor, check it out. Just don't expect astronomical greatness. Their Dr. Pepper and soda options are okay, but then again, they come out of cans too. read more

La Casita can be very difficult to get into at lunchtime. They also are not taking Credit Cards again, so be aware of that. As far as the food, it is the best Mexican food in Alpine. The quantities are not huge, but not too small either. It is always fresh and the service is usually fast and efficient. The enchiladas have been mentioned in other reviews, but also the Chicken Fajitas are very good. Try the Chicken Fajita Burrito. This is the kind of place that would have never been found in times past. It's off the beaten path and clearly not marketed toward the waves of tourists that roll over Alpine each year. It looks very much like a cozy little house. When compared with the tourist-oriented establishments, La Casita is inexpensive and its offerings modest. It was packed on a Friday night with what appeared to be a good crowd of regulars. The salsa is like a spicy pico. It's watery and inevitably gets on the menus, which are not exactly clean. The chili con queso is peculiar. It's at once stringy and also watery and so messy. We were hungry and didn't mind, but I can see how the lack of homogeneity would be a problem for those who care about texture. It's like a chili con queso that didn't turn out, and I'm not sure why they wouldn't correct it. The cheese enchiladas were just fine. The dish fills the plate in one continuous but heterogeneous mess that you come to know and love in down-home Tex-Mex. read more

Super delicious food.Only thing that I didn't like were the torillas,you can tell they were store bought. It looks small on the outside, but has quite a good space Inside. Our waitress was super nice and tentative. You can tell a lot of locals come to this place also,everyone seemed to know each other. It was a super friendly atmosphere as well. The service was great. Beyond that I'm afraid it was a kind of a bust. I had beef fajita quesadillas and my wife had a beaf fajita salad. The fajitas were probably the toughest either of us have ever had. No wine (which was understandable) no margaritas (amazing for a Mexican food place) only beer and wine coolers. But I later found out Alpine hasn't has hard liquor licenses very long. We decided it might have been just fine if we had orders something other than the beef fajitas. read more
