While traveling in West Texas we stopped in to La Casita for lunch. What a charmer. It was exactly what I wanted. Good ole Tex-Mex. The salsa was so fresh and yummy. I ordered a kids plate that was one cheese enchilada and a taco. It was plenty of food for me. My husband had the adult size. We licked the plates clean!! It is one of the few places open at night. The food was good and so is the service. Don't recommend the Chile con queso. I really believe it's just salsa heating up with little amount of shredded cheese. It was not good but everything else not bad. read more

This is a great family run little restaurant in a small town. Because of their good food and happy service, they are generally very busy. Plan on waiting at least 10 minutes. But it will be worth your weight. As their enchiladas and their tacos are wonderful! Also I love their salsas. read more

If a restaurant has been open over 20 years and is still recommended by the locals, it's worth checking out. We drove up to an unassuming little place in a mostly residential neighbourhood. We almost missed it, as we were looking at the house across the street while were driving by. After walking through a spotlessly clean patio, we entered the restaurant and seated ourselves. Service was prompt. Enormous glasses of water, chips and red salsa were brought out quickly. Their salsa is spicy, with chunks of green chili. We inhaled four tasty bowls of it. My green chicken enchilada platter was delicious. Green sauce is not my usual thing, but since our server said the chicken is actually cooked in the sauce, I tried it. Yum-o. Perfect. Not too tart, as some green sauces can be. Flavourful chicken, too. And tasty refried beans. Other dishes ordered: cheese enchiladas, beef enchiladas, asada platter. My children really liked their enchiladas. The asada (in red sauce) was tender enough but definitely lacked something -- a little salt or other seasoning, perhaps -- that could make it a five-star dish. La Casita did a roaring dinner trade while we were there, some of it for take-out orders. It's easy to see why. We'll definitely be back the next time we are in Alpine. read more

Sitting on the patio outside, waiting for my table. We'll wait for 20 minutes, and that's fine by me! We are locals and come here about once a month. Awesome Mexican food. Try the deluxe campechanos. Like deluxe nachos. The half order is more than I can eat. My hubby loves the enchiladas and the deluxe plate with everything. The building is old Mexican stucco, and it's not too fancy, but I don't plan on eating the building. The food's great! Authentic and delicious! I'm not sure there's a sign out front, but you can't miss it with all the cars in the lot. Very popular with locals and a great find when you're passing through. Tasty nachos with lots of meat and guac. Tasty flour tortillas. Beans are made perfectly! Only ding is the use of pre-made taco shells which always take away from a good taco. Pleasantly surprised by the food here. The place is very divey and I only saw two waitresses. Seemed like a lot locals were eating here. Free salsa was homemade and had a nice kick to it. Tried the Mexican platter, Southwestern quesadilla and the Fajita salad. The fajita meat in the salad was really good, but slightly salty. Cooked over a high flame. The Mexican platter (we chose 1 beef, 1 chicken and 1 cheese) enchiladas were pretty good. The chicken enchilada had a yummy green sauce over it. Southwestern quesadilla was only ok. It did come with a large side of guacamole which was good. We're in town for a few days and we are considering coming back as the other restaurants in the area don't seem as promising. Cash only! The owner of the Highland Hotel recommended this. Great recommendation. We got there about 7:15 and they close at 8:00 PM, even on a Friday. The food/service was outstanding. For an authentic environment and food, go to La Casita. One thing caught us off guard. They don't accept any credit cards, only cash, and checks. They do state this on a whiteboard outside the restaurant as you enter; however, my son blocked that view on the way in. And, they did not mention it during the order taking or meal. We almost left without paying, but I thought: "Oh, I need to tip the server and then realized I had not paid and then found out they did not accept a debit/credit card. No issue, there was an ATM about a block away and just got some cash while I left my kids hostage :) It's a great place to really get a unique feel of Alpine, TX. read more

I can't believe that I'm the first to review la Casita. What an honor! This is the kind of place that is the Mexican restaurant in heaven. My wife and I had a blissful dinner here on Valentine's Day. The iced teas were big, the chips (tostadas) were fresh, and the salsa (chile, very New Mexican) was spicy. The queso was thick and hearty, more like a cheese soup with lots of distinct flavors and one order was enough for at least four people. My wife got an a la carte combo of a verde chicken enchilada, a crispy taco, and a guadalajera (flat crispy corn tortilla with beans, cheese, lettuce). I got a Combination plate that included two tacos and three cheese enchiladas. The taco beef was the highlight, very flavorful and juicy. This was the kind of place that soothes your soul into that blissful food coma. read more

This is great mexican food. Quick and happy service. Eaten here hundreds of times and have never had a bad meal. Very consistent and good food. The presentation is not fancy, nor is the building. But it is literally a converted house as the name suggests (La Casita = the little house). This place has been written about in Texas monthly, it's that good. Salsa is flavorful and is warm/hot. The red sauce is just right for spices and the green sauce is very flavorful. Some of the best refried beans I've had. The tea is fresh and glasses large. The selection of beer is surprisingly large for such a small place. Take quarters for the kidos, my daughters always buy the "fruit" candy from the quarter vending machine. read more

I ordered their version of nachos and was grateful for all the lettuce, tomatoes, and guacamole that covered the chicken which seems very salty. I'm not sure where the rave reviews are coming from: the food is above average but nothing to write home about. Still, La Casita is clearly popular with the local crowd, despite being so out-of-the way you need a divining rod and a basset hound to find it. (OK, maybe it's not that bad but it would be nice if the restaurant's signage were a little more prominent so you could at least tell you'd found the right place.) The exterior is cute and cozy in a "neighborhood joint" sort of way, but the interior is dark, run-down, and gaudy. Everything you touch (the tables, the chairs, the high chairs) has that sticky, needs-a-wipedown feel to it. Still, no one else wolfing down their food seems to mind. The size of the place means you can hear your food hit the grill and smell it just around the corner from the kitchen. Service is perfunctory and not exactly friendly, but adequate, especially since it seems to be understaffed. Don't wait for your waitress to bring you a check -the standard operating procedure seems to be to walk up to the register when you're ready to depart. When the food arrives it does so on piping hot plates with the standard accoutrements - transparent iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, the occasional dollop of guacamole. My cheese enchiladas were unexceptional but the Mexican rice was a standout. It was colorful, moist, and flavorful:much better than the bland light orange stuff such places usually foist off on you. The kids liked their beef tacos though our 5-yr old pointed out that the tortilla on her taco was a bit oily. My wife's steak ranchero was a fairly cheap cut of meat but it was excellently prepared and at a reasonable $11 for the plate, it highlights the fact that La Casita's menu defies the embarrassingly high prices that seem to plague Alpine's other eateries. I don't think we'll be back this trip but if you're in the neighborhood and need a cheap, good meal, La Casita should be on your short list. read more

I ordered the beef burrito- it was just steak fajitas rolled into a tortilla with some cooked onions. The guacamole was big, but tasted packed with sour cream or something.
